The Sound of Freedom Breaks $150 Million Domestically, and Prepares, Finally, for a Global Release

The Sound of Freedom has made $150,000,000 so far, and that is only domestically. It is still pulling in over $4 million a day without a single overseas screen showing the film.

But it's about to go global:

The faith-based political thriller Sound of Freedom is headed for cinemas overseas.

Angel Studios on Wednesday announced release dates for 21 markets, including the U.K., Australia, Spain, South Africa and a host of countries in Latin America. It begins its foreign run next month. At the U.S. box office, the movie crossed the $100 million mark July 19, a little over two weeks after its release July 4. And it finished Tuesday of this week with a cume north of $130 million.

It opens in Mexico August 31.

It was written and directed by Latinos, takes place in Mexico and Colombia, and about half of the dialogue is in Spanish, so it should make a good sum in Latin American countries.

On the other hand, there's Disney.

Yesterday I wrote up the allegations made by WDW_Pro's Disney whistleblower that Disney's advertising sales employees were no longer earning bonuses based just on ad sales, but also on "Championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion," getting bonuses for just attending ever biweekly woke diversity lecture.

Today WDW_Pro reports that his whistleblower says that Disney's ad sales for Disney+ and ESPN+ are in the toilet, coincidentally enough.

His whistleblower tells him that "one of Disney's biggest ad partners" has exited its agreement with Disney. They feel that Disney overstated the "impact" that advertising on Disney would have (which may refer to Disney's less-than-stellar ratings, or viewers' lack of response to ads).

Further, ratings, and ad rates, for Disney+ and ESPN+ are so bad that Disney is trying to hide that by bundling it in packages with other Disney offerings like ABC and Hulu.

He also mentions that the co-president of Disney Entertainment (which overseas all Disney studios), Dana Walden, wanted to purge Disney of all "non-diverse" programming (anything starring a man or especially a white man). I guess that's not super-working-out for them.

Iger's in a big enough hole that he's hired back former Disney executives to help dig him out.

The executives will help him figure out how to return his struggling TV properties to profitability or near-profitability -- so they can be sold.

Disney CEO Bob Iger is reaching into his past, reportedly bringing back two former executives to help guide the media giant, according to multiple sources.

Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs have been rehired to advise Iger on how to deal with Disney's legacy television businesses, including the ESPN sports network, according to multiple news sources. Iger, in a recent interview with CNBC, confirmed he was mulling a potential sale of the assets.

Bob Iger will face the wrath of his shareholders at an earnings call next week.

One more thing: The nonsense lawsuit that Bob Iger filed against Ron DeSantis and Florida -- a lawsuit that essentially argued that Florida was required to give Disney special breaks and powers in perpetuity -- has seen a setback.

The new oversight board of the Reedy Creek development district is suing the outgoing board, which purported to grant Disney perpetual rights to control the area as they were being tossed out the door. The new oversight board wants to prove that this grant is null and void, because it was obtained by "backroom dealing" between Disney and the Disney owned-and-operated former board.

Disney moved to dismiss that lawsuit, and a judge has now dismissed Disney's motion.

A Florida judge on Friday rejected a Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) request to dismiss a lawsuit by an oversight district, a move that could make it harder for the entertainment giant to pursue its own case against Governor Ron DeSantis as part of a yearlong feud.

The ruling allows the oversight district to pursue its case that seeks to void "backroom deals" favorable to Disney that were struck with a prior district board earlier this year. If those deals were voided, the district has said it would nearly wipe out Disney's federal case against DeSantis.

Oh well!

By the way, the whole reason the Reedy Creek Improvement District even exists is because Walt Disney planned to build there an actual city, a planned community, which would be his sci-fi-meets-nostalgia notion of the ideal place to live for workers and families.

The government of Florida granted a special right to build this district, granting Disney unheard-of rights to basically run a corporation-owned city.

But Disney abandoned this idea when he realized he couldn't actually control the people living in that community like he controlled his employees. In a planned city, there would be alcoholism, prostitution, infidelity, divorces, etc. -- things that aren't ideal and aren't part of the Disney brand.

So he took the land he owned there and just build Walt Disney World, the theme park. The only vestige of the old "city of tomorrow" idea is Epcot Center.

So that's how Disney wound up being granted, for 70 years or so, an unprecedented degree of corporate control over the government of a big piece of land people both work and live on.

DeSantis cancelled that. He had every right to. It's highly dubious the grant should ever have been made in the first place.

And it is *still* a special district, it just isn't a special special district anymore. The new district works like all the other special districts in the state. Fascinating story of how Disney tried to ELIMINATE them about ten years back. Their original company developed software to censor movies. Parents could select language, nudity, etc. to remove before showing their kids. Disney objected on copyright grounds ( although there is an exception, which the courts ignored).

Disney sued for $62m. The brothers put the company into bankruptcy, and their trustee discovered they could pay the money given time, because some projects were making money. Disney found out they could pay, so they settled, once they realized they could not destroy them.

They became Angel Studios and here we are.

Which isn't derogatory unless you're one of the people who write these articles.

But that aside, it's just a misrepresentation. Angel does faith-based movies. That's their thing. This movie is a special case all around, but "journalists" can't be bothered to research anything they write about. And yeah, the tagline has "God" in it. But the movie isn't a Christian production.

One of the points in the movie though is the US government does not care about sex trafficking minors...because powerful people want to have sex with them.

In the current social climate, I can very well see using what Perfessor described as being prudent behavior for a conservative activist to protect one's livelihood and family, for example.

Again, I invite Perfessor to address this.

89 If you liked Sound of Freedom, I highly recommend "The Abolitionists", the documentary about the sting operations done by Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad. It's compelling because you see the actual footage of the stings, the recorded video and audio of them trapping the baddies. It's tough because you know those are real kids on camera (faces blurred out), not kid actors. But it's compelling footage for those that love true crime stuff.

trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFJCC6wYkP0

That's why I laughed when the left tried to make the trafficking shown in Sound of Freedom as some sort of Qanon conspiracy theory. Dude, the actual stings they based the movie on are ON TAPE!! By their logic, To Catch a Predator is a total Qanon setup.

93 63 Tim Pool had the founders of Angel Studios on last week.

Brothers from Utah (who did the squatty potty unicorn rainbow poop commercial - lol)

Even though some of the later films have moments that sag, or are a little cringe (softening Nick's drinking with milk, some cringe scene of the maid with the new fangled fellytone or playing racial/cultural stereotypes for laughs), they are always a great duo and they mysteries have fun angles. Look forward to a young Jimmy Stewart. Whole series is in my permanent collection and I love going back to them.

Copyright is generally stupid, but America has some of the dumbest. My favorite thing is when people defend extended copyright by wondering if we would ever have a Shakespeare or a Mozart without it. Yes and yes!! Started as Cleanflix. They bought DVDs and edited them for rentals, I used to go to their local rental place. Or you could bring in your own already paid for DVDs and get them edited.

ALL of Hollywood fought against them, using the excuse that they were destroying ART!!!. (Never mind that all the studios edited their films for TV or planes for content.) They fought the censoring art angle and that is what the judges sided with. They rebranded as Pureflix and did edited streaming, you selected how much to edit. (Their editing filters for Star Wars allowed you to actually edit out Jar Jar Binks, haha!)

But now Hollywood's streaming sites and even Criterion are censoring ART!!! themselves, including The French Connection. Oh how history does a 180 sometimes!

Assume that they got the property in 2018 or 2019, put a bit of marketing behind it like any other small movie, and released it. It might have turned a small profit. Few people would have gone to see it and it would have been largely forgotten. Just another adult drama with a small budget that most people never heard of.

Back pre-2020, things were pretty good. The economy was humming along, the groomers weren't marching down the street in full parades at all times, the "Summer of Love" hadn't happened yet, there hadn't been a stolen election, the entire government and industrial systems hadn't been widely exposed as corrupt, etc. Things were *normal* and few people knew about any higher-than-average risks to kids. Had it released back then, it wouldn't have made a single wave.

They suppressed it for long enough for the world to change and for it to become extremely relevant.

Iger was all blather and happy talk last time.
Comcast had their call last week which was positive, so Disney needs to be comparable (they overlap in parks and movies), but they can't, since all their operations are turning to shit, and they need 9b in cash in January for Hulu.

Plus, Iger caused some stir in a CNBC interview about the writer's strike, upsetting the *agents* of major talent.

Now, this weird DEI culty bullshit is surfacing.

Would be fun to have some hard questions put to those fascist Mice.

222 I saw the movie Sunday. 4:30 show in Bethesda MD and the place was full. Aside from the politics, I think it was an incredibly well made movie. They managed to convey all the horrors of the situation without making it graphic. In a wasy it was harder to take because you had to imagine just how awful what those kids were going through. The child actors were almomst too real. I kept thinking they woild need counseling after portrahying those abused children. It just look real. The courage that it took for Ballard, a father of 6, to do what he did was off the charts. Talk about someone who deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor.
The movie had a temendous impact on me. No one left til Ballard's closing message came on.
Go see it.

1 - Latinos head for US border with intent to crash.

2 - Latinos get preyed on by sex traffickers from their own countries.

3 - Lax border policies a) attract ever more prospective border crashers, and b) make penetration by sex traffickers that much easier.

Is that how it's working? I haven't seen the movie and I don't know what the call to action is, but I think the US only has direct control over #3.

We couldn't have gone in 1940 or '45, as I hadn't been born yet. But the next release, I was one year old; and the one after that, I was nine and would have been thrilled by the action scenes, not frightened. Streetcar Named Desire would be PD. Same with Key Largo, The Lady from Shanghai, The Red Shoes, Fort Apache, Red River and so, so many more, including, most importantly, a bunch of smaller stuff that's been forgotten and never touched because of fear that the copyright holders would come and say something.

Ironically, the rise of the Internet has made avoiding copyright holders on lesser known works easier. Just put it on a hosting site, and walk away, But no one should be in fear of the Welles estate for promulgating The Lady from Shanghai. And, because the Soviet Union was so poor, they had to be extremely judicious with how they used expensive film stock, which led to the extreme use of montage in early Soviet films by people like Eisenstein in films like Strike and Battleship Potemkin. 285 Disney, for years, had a reputation as being about family. Not just appealing to, but being affordable for, families. When Disney started losing money, they started jacking prices.

Galaxy's edge didn't fail due to woke shit, it failed because the prices were in the "you gotta be fucking kidding me" bracket. $200 for a light saber ($15 on Amazon). $40 for a kids T-shirt ($20 on Amazon). Porg staffed animal - $45 ($15 on Amazon). How about a $50 cocktail? ($15 at my local bar).

Disney decided it wanted to appeal to rich white wine Aunts. That was not, and never will be, an profitable audience for the company.

At the end of the day, if you're willing to kiss off your customers, you don't care about the shareholder.

If you look at millions of customers walking away because of your policies, but you feel those policies are more important than profits, then disregard for the rights of shareholders is baked into that cake... I'd argue that, at this late date, Disney's C-suite is guilty of breaching their fiduciary duties. You're doing it on purpose at this point.

Of course - this is America, and laws don't apply to Party men like Bob Iger or Sam Bank-Fraud.

Shareholder dyspepsia may lead to Iger departing Disney for some new lucrative gig, or even to retire and wallow in his $690M cash heap.

But nothing will change Disney's course... If you're still investing in them, you're a dumb fuck, and you deserve the haircut you take.

318 >>> Disney decided it wanted to appeal to rich white wine Aunts. That was not, and never will be, and profitable audience for the company.

The big Utah families that I know of with the 4+ kids and 8+ grandkids that went to Disney parks every year, it was usually the grandparents footing the bill who want to create family memories for everyone. Middle class greatest generation or boomers, with retirement money to burn on their family.

For some reason Disney has decided to 1) no longer make family friendly films appealing to this customer, and 2) focus instead on DINKS (double income no kids) who just don't consistently spend the same amount per capita as this customer, and 3) make the parks so expensive no middle class customer can afford to do such trips anymore for the whole family.

It's schadenfreudelicious to see Disney shoot themselves in the foot on every imaginable level.

They will have 6 lands to visit - Great Plains, Bayou Bay, Big Timber Falls, Stony Point Harbor, Liberty Village and Electropolis. They hired a lot of prior Disney Imagineers to design the lands.

Some good things are happening!

I remember a good public library or college library usually had in reference an entire multi volume series on plot lines etc. for writers to reference.

Can't remember the name of it but Wolfus might know due to his dayjob and avocation.

Last movie completed before Walt died. DVD has an interesting interview with some of the child actors in the film and their memories.

Also has a young Kurt Russell in it.

363 I think TBS found a way to renew the copyright on Its a wonderful life.

The film itself is in the public domain. If you had a print of it, you could run it in your theatre 24/7/365 and never pay a cent of royalties to anyone.

The short story it was based on and the music in it are still under copyright. These were never licensed for anything other than film (i.e. not licensed for TV/DVD/streaming/etc). This is how they stopped the free TV showings. One entity holds the short story and music rights. This is who licenses it for its one network showing per year.

First movie I can remember seeing was The African Queen during the drive in movie phase of its theatrical release. Probably late 1952.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at August 01, 2023 05:18 PM (lCaJd)

Remington Steele was a very good show, great writing and acting. It was more about celebrating old films than banter.

Detective Laura Holt invents a fake boss Remington Steele to keep her detective agency going. A mysterious international thief finds out, assumes the identity and she has to go along with it. Steele is a big movie fan and is always trying to relate the current case to old movie plots.

372 Sound of Freedom is not faith-based. They mention God a couple times. They do not claim divine intervention or power of prayer or anything.

It’s not really a thriller either. Just a powerful story with excellent performances by all, especially the kids.

379 Disney and Henry Ford had something in common: an idealistic paternalism. Ford paid his workers more than the other car manufacturers, built nice housing for them, with gardens, but also wanted them to behave nicely.
