First-World Problems...

Yankeegum1.jpg

Yup! Those are two seats from the old Yankee Stadium...removed when it was renovated in the 1970s. And if you look closely you can see the original chewing gum! And that is the existential question occupying my every waking thought...what to do with these things? Clean them and repaint them? Or just leave them be as a reminder of what baseball used to be before politics intruded?

***

PS. Nothing at all to do with the topic at hand, but damn...I saw Guardians Of The Galaxy III yesterday, and wow...it sucked. Tired dialogue. Mediocre effects. Obvious emotional tugs that were formulaic (Awww...cute animals!). The campy buddy connections were forced and awkward, and the story itself was chaotic and not very much fun. On the other hand, the villain was well done.

Short version: Hollywood can f*ck up a wet dream.

71 There's a famous picture of a forlorn-looking 5 y.o. boy at a Giants game at Candlestick in the late 90's sometime when ownership was strongly considering moving the team to Florida. He was hanging on the railing next to a sign imploring the team not to move. Well, a new (and gorgeous) stadium got built, and the Giants made the World Series in 2003. It also won the W.S. in 2010, 2012, and 2014, and the starting shortstop for the 2012 and 2014 teams was that little boy, Brandon Crawford, one of the best shortstops of his generation. That kind of stuff is what makes (or made) America.

Ryno Sandburg… 1984. I believe he hit .289 with 19 HRs and played a gold glove second base. That was an MVP-type campaign back then. I’m a long-suffering Cubs fan and I had more emotional attachment to their 1984 and 1989 teams than to the team that finally won the WS in 2016. I admit I still can’t talk rationally about Steve Bartman and 2003…. and I didn’t even really follow that 2003 team

That's always a tough question for things like those chairs. If they're for collecting or reselling someday, leave as originals. If you want them to sit on in a covered porch or something, repaint them.

Nice! Don't know any of the players anymore, but unlike when the dude from Toronto (forget his name, another steroid guy) got dropped by the second baseman, this time the hitter got in one good shot to drop the fielder, even though the fielder threw multiple punches before he got his right hand free.

Back in the day I attended a game at new Comiskey, Red Sox v. White Sox, and Albert Belle got a hbp, after a few other players had been hit/brushed back, and Albert charged the mound. Before he got to the pitcher, he got blindsided by Mo Vaughn (I think? Might have been the catcher), and got sent flying.

If it was Vaughn, not the first time Belle got beat by Mo. The '95 MVP race was a travesty.

I saw a game in old Cleveland Municipal, back in the 80s. It was glorious. Indians were leading throughout, then the bullpen failed them. They were playing Toronto, and George (Don't Call Me Albert) Bell was playing for them at the time. Every time he came to bat, someone would start banging on a cowbell, and yelling as loud as possible "who's ringing that bell!"

No way he didn't hear it. Anyhoo, the fog rolled in, the place started to empty out, and somewhere around the 11th or 12th, the Jays scored and won the game.

I was freezing my arse off by the end, but loved every second of it.

Hey now.

One of my favorite Babe Ruth stories, the team was rolling into some away city, as he's getting off the train, fans are gathered round. A comely young lass is standing there, holding a baby, looking at the Babe.

Ruth says to her "lady, if you keep looking at me like that, I'll put another one in the other arm."

I made a firepit by digging in a car rim into a pit in the back ground. I put pavers around the outside to make it look nice and to seal the rim against the dirt, and dug in some clay drainage tiles to bring air into the bottom like a "Dakota fire hole" It cooks stews well, and uses surprisingly little fuel to cook with.
It certainly is not convenient for cooking, just better than cooking over an open fire.

As for Guardians III I have seen it. I have stayed away from comic book films as I never cared for comic books and do not know the characters and have no wish to. Superheroes with super powers make no scientific sense. I’ll keep Catwoman though (Hally Berry and Julie Newmar).

Saw Guardians I and II and liked both; III much less so but I was expecting only to be mildly entertained so it did that but it was way too long.

I go to be entertained and not preached to (church is for that which is quite important).

So much wiggle room there.

One wiggle word is "unfairly." Who determines whether your termination was fair? The judge/jury? If you're in a civil or small claims court, does a finding for the employer mean it was fair after all? What if there's a morality clause in your contract and the employer is entitled to say what's moral and what's not? What if you work with a bunch of dumb lefties who testify that they felt unsafe after they saw your tweet?

How easy would it be for the employer to say "It wasn't the tweet. Bill did not get along well with co-workers and created a toxic environment."

And what does labor law say?

242 There are great people everywhere.

Of course. We need to do our very best to hang with and support those folks at all costs. We cannot succumb to the poison that is around every corner.

The city is a 61 square mile pineapple shaped hellhole.

Plenty of good bbq places all around the county.

246 Welp, just had another microburst here in my AO. Fifth one this summer. Haven't checked yet but I'm sure that I could do laps in my basement right about now. Sigh.

And how was it atypical?

I have heard from people who had been to others showing of RHPS where people talking the entire time and got up and joined the dancing, so the audience participation in a smallish theatre in the South was minimal

250 If your every comment doesn't contain a disclaimer listing every conceivable exception, then you are a bad person who has violated RICO, the Mann Act, and jaywalking statutes.

there's very little I'm completely sure about

252 Fenelon--

Since there were later showings that same evening I think the people who wanted to participate in the rituals were waiting for those.

At the 6:00 showing I think there were maybe 10 of us who were there just out of curiosity and we just watched the movie.

253 Why do baseball pitchers raise one leg before throwing the ball?

Because if they raise both, they fall over.

Thank you. Please tip your waitress.

254 Oh yeah, I later went to some more typical "Rocky" showings at the Highland Park Village theater where it showed on Saturday at midnight for years and that was highly participatory.

But it was also weird in its own way because Highland Park--and especially the Village--is ground zero for Dallas's old money.

257 Nobody expects a disclaimer for every comment and nobody is saying they're bad people . It's just that " I hope they all die horribly". "I don't care if a nuclear bomb hits people in red state is a teensy bit offputting" and it's nice when a disclaimer is occasionally made

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 06, 2023 04:10 PM (obYWF)

259 Yes, I did watch the replay with the grands who love women's soccer. The coach substituting the purple haired wonder for arguably our best player was land war in Asia stupid. I'm glad they lost but coach is an idiot.

They used to sell "Gum Remover" that was basically just R-11 in a can. Spray until gum freezes forck hard then chip off.

Maybe invert a propane tank and stray it with liquid propane.

Off Topic - I've seen guys repair cut lead lead water service lines that way.
Lead pipe cut by excavator. Peen lead pipes close with a couple of hammers to stop the flow. Douse with propane to freeze water in the line. Cut off peened ends with hacksaw. Put in copper splice with compression fittings. Not even ten minutes and done.
We need to bring lead pipes back.

261 Those seats are literally from the House That Ruth Built.

Treasure them. In a perfect world, you could mount them at couch height in your rec room to sit in while you watch baseball.

I’d maintain them in the same way they were when they were in Yankee Stadium, which means repainting them, removing rust and oiling them.

As they are indoors, you’ll probably only have to do them once.
