The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy compared President Joe Biden's alleged weaponization of government to that of President Richard Nixon, and the California Republican said he believes the Congressional investigation will rise to an impeachment inquiry. McCarthy said Monday on Fox News' "Hannity" that Biden falsely claimed he never received money from China, when in reality numerous payments were made by foreign nationals to his family and shell companies while he was vice president. Simultaneously, multiple credible whistleblowers have said the Biden family has been treated differently by federal investigatory agencies, he also said. "We would know none of this if Republicans hadn't taken the majority," McCarthy said.
Nixon was a liberal Republican who was a mediocre president, but the idea that he weaponized the federal government on nearly the scale that the Democrat/progressive state has is laughable. Nixon tried to use the IRS against his enemies, and George Schultz (The treasury secretary) told him to pound sand. Compare that to the Obama/Biden/Kalorama regime! As for him taking credit for exposing the 50 year record of the Biden crime family dipping its beak into every transaction and selling its influence to the highest bidder? That is a pathetic attempt to co-opt the yeoman's work that has been done by dozens of dedicated journalists and bloggers in investigating and exposing the unbelievably craven and treasonous conduct of the current administration and its figurehead, the drooling, shambling wreck that pretends to be a president. And the Republican party, in which McCarthy is an important cog, carefully sabotaged the 2022 mid-term elections because of their psychotic and anti-American desire to cleanse the party of all Trumpian influences. Had they simply done their jobs, the United States Senate would be controlled by Republicans, the House of Representatives would have a solid majority, and Joseph Robinette Biden could be impeached and convicted for his obvious crimes. As he should be. But we are going to be subjected to another round of Republican failure theater, in which the starring roles will be played by career apparatchiks without any philosophical dedication to conservatism and the rule of law. But they are dedicated to something, and that is money, so expect another barrage of fundraising appeals piggybacked on IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT! Good luck with that. I will never donate to the Republican party apparatus, and I will never donate to any politician who has embraced their politics of failure. It is long past the time when business-as-usual is a rational idea, and the H.L. Mencken quotation at the top of this page is all the direction the Republican party needs to get back on track...which they will never do.

I guess if you look at it from the political perspective, and not the "crime" itself, if they make this a spectacle like they did the Nixon impeachment hearings, that's worth him calling it equivalent.
That being said, Watergate was a CIA plot to remove Nixon. This one is just... a petty crime family getting their comeuppance. I'd say the Nixon op was worse on some very significant levels.

I think every 20 years there should be a short session where every existing law except those impacting treasury, property management (interior) and defense need to be affirmatively continued by majority vote, and every presidential executive order as well.

Gold itself isn't the point, tying the dollar to something with fixed quantities is. That was the entire point of cryptocurrency - the math means there's a fixed amount and you can't just print more. (I'm assuming the upcoming BidenCoin won't have that property).

Keynesianism was just the fig leave of an excuse big spending governments used to do what they wanted to do anyway. It's the same reason they latched onto Modern Monetary Theory. The next thing could be called, "I love to knife puppies for economic growth," and they'll latch onto it while spending like crazy just like they always do.

The number one goal for the rest of the year is to maintain the stock markets prices and prevent a Bear Market. My money is on a real Bear Market - like a 30% hit to today's indexes. LBJ lit the inflation dumpster fire and it took 14 years to bring it under control. That's what we are looking at.

Gold itself isn't the point, tying the dollar to something with fixed quantities is. That was the entire point of cryptocurrency - the math means there's a fixed amount and you can't just print more. (I'm assuming the upcoming BidenCoin won't have that property).

You do realize that money and the ability to absorb it has nothing to do with what you fix it to, but the productivity of the economy that is utilizing it. A fixed asset - like gold - restrains all sorts of growth - and when we were completely tied to it, was responsible for all sorts of economic woes. Tying your economy to gold is like shackling your hands behind your back.
Currency is a marker for economic productivity. Full stop. Why did inflation accelerate under Biden and not Trump? It's not like Trump was a budget/spending hawk. It was because Biden in his first week torpedoed the productivity of the US economy. And we could no longer support the dollars in circulation. You do realize that money and the ability to absorb it has nothing to do with what you fix it to, but the productivity of the economy that is utilizing it. A fixed asset - like gold - restrains all sorts of growth - and when we were completely tied to it, was responsible for all sorts of economic woes. Tying your economy to gold is like shackling your hands behind your back.
Currency is a marker for economic productivity. Full stop. Why did inflation accelerate under Biden and not Trump? It's not like Trump was a budget/spending hawk. It was because Biden in his first week torpedoed the productivity of the US economy. And we could no longer support the dollars in circulation. Powell finally started fixing it, which is why it is slowing a bit.

i perversely agree with the underlying point. Every ordered society will have some degree of corruption at the top. it's like weeds in a garden. eliminating 100% of weed pressure from your garlic bed is gonna be nigh on impossible without wrecking your garlic harvest in the process. But the key is for the weeds to be there, but not overly so. If you let the weeds outnumber the crops, you got yourself a problem.
And if you start fertilizing the weeds and deadheading your garlic bulbs, you're.... not here for the gardening, are you?

The overpriced chicken in my crock pot is starting to smell real good. And here's one reason it's overpriced. Local poultry operations have help wanted bill boards around town, production help starting at $20 an hour. Doubled over the last year or two. Hard work but it's getting to be a stretch paying $20 an hour for generally unskilled labor.

Just got a call. Seems my stepmom thinks my dad's bag is now infected because he wasn't assisting and she wasn't getting the bag taken care of correctly. The bag won't stay on, so there's shit everywhere and she can't get him in the car to go to the ER because he's being an obnoxious asshole. I talked to him and he said he'll go, but she'll have to call the EMT's if he doesn't.

What LIVs don't seem to understand is that it isn't just inflation, but the effective $15+ minimum wage that has cranked up prices, too. The meth head criminal burning fries at McDonalds being paid $17 an hour? That's your money disappearing.
Add both of them together and you've lost half or 3/4s of your savings.

Just got back from tractor supply store buying dog food. Black Dog Three has to have purina proplan salmon and rice because of skin and digestive issues. She is less than three years old so I have a base for what I paid for a 40 pound bag of $47 when we put her on this food about 24 months ago. It jumped to $61 a bag in the spring of 2022, today I paid $91 for the same bag of dog food that we have been buying for two years.
This is not sustainable.
Add both of them together and you've lost half or 3/4s of your savings.

I have to agree w/ Ciampino. Gold used for contacts and boards all the time. Doesn't corrode like other metals (silver tarnishes). It's also a function of availability; iron is extremely useful, but much, much more common.

A huge push over the last few decades was in coming up with conductors to use in place of gold, to save money.
Turns out anything that's a viable replacement is wayyyyyy more expensive and a pain in the asshole to make than gold, so i think everyone just said "well screw it, then, let's go back to pissing about with Cu/Sn solders again i guess".

Leslie Groves needed a *lot* electrical conductor for the Oak Ridge operations. He couldn't get it - copper was rationed and primary need was arms.
So he went to the Treasury and asked for many tons of silver bullion to use instead. He promised to give it all back within five years. He got it. He borrowed thousands of tons of the US Treasury's silver and had it melted down and spun into wire, busbars, etc. These were then installed in production complexes in Oak Ridge.
After the war (though longer than 5 years - the process ended in 1970, since the equipment was still being used), it was torn out and returned to the Treasury. Losses were a mere 0.0036%.

Gold is durable, rare and marginally useful. That's a great basis for storing value - so long, of course, as people actually want the stuff. Gold fits that condition.

Exactly - it has value because people think it does. The American dollar also has value because people think it does. It is the only global reserve currency. The difference? The dollar can move with productivity gains and losses. Gold cannot. The dollar is a store of value of generated productivity. Gold (which isn't quite as rare as we think, but is still not all that abundant) cannot fulfill that purpose. It's like bitcoin, except it cannot evaporate from your strongbox.

I think every 20 years there should be a short session where every existing law except those impacting treasury, property management (interior) and defense need to be affirmatively continued by majority vote, and every presidential executive order as well.

It will be interesting to watch. This however will impact the fed somewhat. We do get some juice having the dollar used everywhere, and to the extent this decreases - and I don't think it will very much - makes it a bit more uncomfortable to float our debt.
