Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Interesting Theory: Hollywood Won't Pay Residuals for Streaming Shows, Because That Would Require They Open the Books for the Ratings for Streaming, and That Would Let Out the Secret That Streaming's Ratings Are LowMaking this theory more plausible is the fact that stock prices, particularly for tech stocks, are based chiefly on speculative value -- how much you think you can sell the stock for later -- and barely at all on actual revenues the stocks yield through dividend payments to owners. For decades, tech companies have been valuated not upon their present market value but for their potential future value. This is based on the huge increases in value for the tech companies that ultimately made money-- FaceBook, Amazon, etc. No one ever seems to think about the hundreds of tech plays that were money-losing disasters, like PetsDotCom. And for some reason Wall Street has been treating legacy media companies as hot new tech companies with massive possible future growth. Now, I know stocks in media companies are not "tech stocks." Trouble is, Wall Street and investors don't seem to know that. They've been treating sad old yesterday's-news media companies as "tech" companies merely because part of their programming is offered through streaming, which feels "kinda techie" to these midwits. Ford cars have minicomputers in them. Is Ford a tech company too? Book publishers offer books for electronic download on ebooks like Kindle. Is Random House a tech company now? So with the values of companies, particularly the non-tech "tech companies" of the media dependent so heavily on speculated, imaginary value, rather than on verifiable deliverables such as dividend payments, it becomes even more crucial to hide any evidence that the speculated, phantasmal "value" of these companies isn't real. Ratings must he sealed in a Black Box so that the bubble of over-puffed imaginary value is never punctured by the sharp sting of hard numbers. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

++++ This is not a hot take. This has been the assumption of a lot of people - including me - for a long time. The way streaming residuals work right now is grossly unfair and extremely expensive for the streaming company, but also delightfully opaque. To pay residuals fairly - that is, to pay actors, writers, etc. based on viewership - would require disclosure of what's being viewed. Pick any standard you'd like - number of viewers, total minutes watched, etc. - but you have to disclose real data in order to do that. It's that disclosure that I think they are trying to avoid because those numbers probably suck pretty generally, especially for most of the monstrously expensive original content. Investors might lose their credulity if those data come out. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 25, 2023 01:19 PM (B2vkr) 24

I've been assuming this for a while.
There's a quote from Damon Lindeloff where he was talking about being in the writer's room for his show. He and his writers played a game where they would name a show and the star, and they had to guess if it was real or not. The joke was that they were all real, but no one had heard of them. Meh - something is wrong here.
Who gives a shit how many views a show has? What matters with streaming is how many subscribers you get. That is the only metric that matters. That is where the money comes from, not the number of views. Views used to matter when the show was tied to advertising - each time the show was shown, the viewer saw an ad, and money was generated. Same with DVD sales - each sale was a finite amount of money. With subscriber-based series - how do you determine what caused the viewer to subscribe? I know people who subscribe to all the services yet watch very little. Posted by: Mr. Winnefred T Pooh. at July 25, 2023 01:21 PM (nJ1bF) 38

Returning to the dot-com crash. Wired Magazine tried to do an IPO back in the late '90s. They pay their executives with stock options. They get it low, they want to sell it high. And they fund their lifestyle not on money they earn, but on borrowing with the stock as collateral. If the stock crashes, they lose their shirts.

I've been saying this for so long I'm blue in the face. The studios killed the golden goose (ads on TV) because they listened to the tech overlords & took everything in-house. So NBC can have Peacock, fine, but what ads are you showing to subscribers? Ads for NBC's other stuff. P&G isn't paying to show ads for Bounty behind a paywall. HBO could get away w/ it same as Showtime because they were dedicated to film/TV on a subscription model for 30+ yrs, while being backed up by WB's other endeavors.
Disney is the only other one who could do that & they've been torching building size piles of money lately. So they can't do that much longer. Cable & network TV works due to ad money, period. But it's a slim margin. Streamers are subscription only but they NEED their investors to believe their bullshit that they're making money. Amazon & Apple have other revenue streams so they can take the loss, but extra money for actors/writers isn't coming out of the Kindle or iPhone division, ever. Posted by: Elric Blade at July 25, 2023 01:20 PM (iFTx/) ======= Essentially, streaming has been "potential" earnings for a long time, and now that the market is saturated, people are beginning to ask serious questions about these promised earnings. Streaming has always been a money pit at the prices people are willing to pay. If you can get 150 million people to pay $30 a month for a service, it should be profitable, but when your average pay is something like $2-3, anchored by the fact that something like a third of your consumer base is in India and paying less than a dollar for access, then you are not making the money necessary to pay for the regular $250-$400 million worth of content put onto a service like Disney+ every month. Posted by: Elric Blade at July 25, 2023 01:30 PM (iFTx/) ======= The argument at the beginning of streaming was that new content brought in subscribers but libraries kept them. The did sort of admit to that in their rebuttle of the SAG talking points.
So right now Actor's feet $X amount upfront instead of steaming residuals. That amount is then deducted from future residuals. What SAG is asking for is that actors should get both the lump sum, and residuals. The AMPTP responded with, to paraphrase: They want to get paid when a show succeeds, but not when a show fails. Actors are getting a larger upfront bonus for shows that don't get viewers, and they get the benefit of money they would have never recieved if based on just residuals, because their show is a failure. You would have never heard this from those companies months ago. Im guessing on most of these streamers they get: 5% hits, 15% mild success, 30% shows they know will fail but they fund because it pushes an agenda, and 50% complete failures. On linear tv failures weren't a big issue because Ad revenue still covered the losses, and shows didn't cost much to make. But every streaming show seems to need to be a $100 mil epic, and subscriber minwu alone doesn't cover it, since ther cost to build and run these standards probably but then in debt for decades. One of the reasons MGM ended up dominating early in the studio days was Irving Thalberg's emphasis on applying the assembly line processes as much as possible to movie making.
Everything was interchangeable from artisans to writers to actors. This is where typecasting originated. They were essentially short form information to audiences about what kinds of movie they were going to get just from the actor's name. This built some incredible efficiencies in the early decade or two of MGM's existence that helped the studio outlast Thalberg's death and Louis B. True, the number of views doesn't itself generate revenue. But streamers use the number of views as a measure of success and a marketing gimmick to try to get new subscribers. They try to hype up the popularity of a show to generate interest and (hopefully) more subscribers. The same way the movie industry does when it hypes how such-and-such piece of shit movie is "The No. 1 Movie In America!"
Posted by: Elric Blade at July 25, 2023 01:30 PM (iFTx/) Here is the thing - Paramount makes star trek. Now, the new star trek shows are shit, BUT. There is a segment of fandom that will consume anything with star trek on it, and that segment will pay for the steaming service. So, you put on show, it gets low viewership (because it is shit) but it drives subscribers. hence a shit show makes money. Posted by: Mr. Winnefred T Pooh. at July 25, 2023 01:42 PM (nJ1bF) 178

A fascinating YT channel is MosFilm. I've studied ComBloc and Non-Aligned Film for decades and the final fact is, the authorities had the power to force people to watch their studio output at gunpoint, but, ultimately, could not make anyone like it. It was out of their hands and the Bolsheviks lost.
The Soviets even under Stalin were forced to make the usual: action movies, musicals, comedies, romances, or literally nobody would voluntarily attend. Yet the writers and actors are striking due to not getting paid enough?
Posted by: Mr. Winnefred T Pooh Writers and actors are two separate things, both in why they are striking, and if it's actually warranted. For writers i think it is. They are fighting to keep studios from getting an AI to write a script, then have a writer do rewrites. Writers make the most when writing the script, and make a small (relative to the overall film cost) fee when doing rewrites. They also have made it harder for tv writers, as they'll now just put them on weekly contracts instead of hiring them for a show. I think their strike is totally valid. SAG is striking for attention. They're striking to make their members think they're fighting for them, in hopes they forget how they took away the healthcare of many of them in the middle of Covid and dismissed their concerns by saying "you can go in the public plan or Medicare" The SAG members are, for the most part (and i say this as one of them) imbeciles who blindly vote yes for whatever contract they're given, hence why they voted to strike. SAGs strike is bs, and they'll screw the little guy to get DeNiro a few more checks Posted by: Rbastid at July 25, 2023 01:46 PM (pt6cR) 211

Right. It's that easy. What's the percentage of ordinary, average people who invested in Apple, Google, etc. back when it was cheap? That's your real odds of picking a winner like that. you will see production moved overseas to less union-friendly jurisdictions. This has already happened in the B-movie sphere. I expect the A-Listers to follow suit.
Posted by: Elric Blade at July 25, 2023 01:53 PM (iFTx/) Moving overseas doesn't do anything. Films shoot all over the world are still subject to SAG jurisdiction depending on who appears in ther films, who the production companies are, what theaters show the films, and even what other unions work on them. They would need to basically upend everything. A film can shoot as non-union, but once it gets released many have to pay backpay at union rates. Like I said, SAG is doing this all for show. The second the WGA signs a contract, SAG will fold and accept the same contract in front of them now, maybe with a minor change, and claim it as a huge victory. They've always folded and accepted minimal gains, for major concessions. No one in SAG is fighting for the actors, they're fighting for attention. Ive seen first hand SAG actually deny their own contract, in order to benefit the production over the actors. There are well know kickback schemes with people in the union. @JCNSeverino Harvard Law School’s Mark Tushnet is urging President Biden to move forward in a direction against the Supreme Court that would bring us to a constitutional crisis. This is a brazen disregard for the rule of law that's becoming far too common on the Left. 7:46 AM · Jul 24, 2023 https://t.co/YC6tcOZYZe Aaron Belkin and I have written the following open letter to the Biden administration urging that it endorse and take steps to implement popular constitutionalism as a response to what the President has described as "not a normal" Supreme Court. We urge President Biden to restrain MAGA justices immediately by announcing that if and when they issue rulings that are based on gravely mistaken interpretations of the Constitution that undermine our most fundamental commitments, the Administration will be guided by its own constitutional interpretations. The threat that MAGA justices pose is so extreme that reforms that do not require Congressional approval are needed at this time, and advocates and experts should encourage President Biden to take immediate action to limit the damage. Why are there any ads for prescription meds anyway?
The serious answer is that BigPharma used to send in sales reps (usually attractive young women) to the doctors offices and push them to sell certain drugs. There were all kinds of free trips and outings and other goodies. Some docs were coopted and put on the payroll to push drugs to other docs at free dinners. But the FDA (which once upon a time in Democratic admins was skeptical of BigPharma) eventually cracked down on this. (There's still sales reps, but almost all of the blatant bribery and payoffs are gone.) So BigPharma had to come up with a new strategy for manipulating the market, and that was the model that patients had to take a proactive role in their own healthcare. Hence, ad campaigns in which potential patients are bombarded and urged to "ask your doctor if Fuckitol AF is right for you!" Except for vaccines, the experts have already decided they're right for you. So be sure to get your 20th booster. Not surprising. Streaming services are pretty close to a zero sum game. People aren't willing to pay for Amazon/HBO/Hulu/Netflix/AppleTV/etc at the same time. Lots of people just do the channel hopping thing where they pick one service for a year, watch everything on it that they're interested in, cancel it and switch. Given the total amount of new content that interests people these days, that seems like a smart move, waiting for for a year or three for each of these services to get new content that you'd be interested in.

Streaming is a stupid revenue source. There's no residual revenue from adding more streaming, your one time monthly or annual payment is all inclusive. Add new content, same revenue. Why would they want to pay residuals for each stream, when they're only getting a single up front check from the consumer? How does this work if 1 person paying the same 12.99 a month watches 100 hrs of tv vs someone who watches 10 hrs? The network owes 1000 of residuals? It doesn't scale. Unless they add commercials, which pisses off customers who are already paying extra for the service

It's part of how "wealth" has been created out of thin air for generations. They rich get richer because they all say so. So MAGA is such an existential threat that we should ditch the Constitution to rule by decree. And you're telling me that stealing an election is a paranoid fantasy? The joke was that they were all real, but no one had heard of them. Professionals in television having no idea shows existed, and the shows were in their 3rd or 4th seasons.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison I have an antenna for some regular TV channels and then Netflix/Hulu for movies, etc. For current TV shows, I don't know the majority of actors as I am flipping channels. I will stop on some show and see such shitty acting, writing, etc. it boggles the mind. Posted by: Cheri at July 25, 2023 02:19 PM (oiNtH) 411
Walter started as an underdog and only gradually morphed into the anti-hero.
--- Hold on a second. What's the actual definition of anti-hero? Is an anti-hero any character with understandable motivations that is doing bad things? Is it a character willing to engage in bad actions to obtain a good goal? Is it a character who strictly adheres to an atypical moral code? I would consider an anti-hero something closest to that second definition, in which case WW is an anti-hero at the beginning of the story who just ends up as a villain at the end because his motivations have ceased to be good. On the other hand, I was not terribly impressed with the BB sequel about Saul Goodman. I never found him compelling, couldn't see why the hot blonde lawyer lady was enamored with him, and did not really care what happened to him.

Also, there were 3 channels.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, watching some more Best Pictures at July 25, 2023 We were spoiled in the NY market, even in the 50's when I was a kid. 7 VHF channels from NYC. And, if one lived in my area, an additional 3 from Philly, channels 2, 6, and 10. The NY channels were 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13. 13, eventually became WNDT, educational, and part of PBS. In the summer, during a "skip", channel 8 from Connecticut could be received. Posted by: thatcrazyjerseyguy now with twice the crazy at July 25, 2023 03:15 PM (Zvtjl) 419
Sorry, you actor weirdos. You're getting $0.03 residual checks because your show isn't profitable, and the studio that produced the show knows it. In order to make a living off residuals the amount of content needs to be massively cut. Like, 1980's level of programming content. That means 90% of actors are permanently out of work.

At the time of collapse, Nortel had a better P/E than google. Also, Amazon makes money, but not by doing what it's known for. They make money off of AWS which EXPLODED in market share through a non contest award by the CIA I think to buy a fuckton of servers. Facebook is still losing money, but it has a fuckton of "revenue" but overall it's a money sink.

Ford cars have minicomputers in them. Is Ford a tech company too?
Funny you should ask that. I work for one of the Big 3 and after the recent merger, the new company states that we are now not an auto company, but rather a "tech mobility company". Whatever the hell that means. I am guessing that because the WEF and Western nations' Deep State organizations are forcing automotive companies to go full EV by 2030 (Agenda 2030), some companies are rebranding and thinking ahead to when they are no longer allowed to sell ICE automobiles. EVs are basically technology on wheels, thus I guess that is the rationale for branding the company a "tech mobility company". Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 25, 2023 06:17 PM (60h0q) 424
That said, the first time I read we were now a "tech mobility company", the first thing that came to mind was mobile phones (cell phones), not automobiles.
