First-World Problems...

Modern windows are amazingly efficient at keeping the heat in and the cold out, and vice versa! But a big part of that is because they use large panes of glass instead of many smaller panes separated by mullions (cool word!). To replace the elegant look of the mullions, modern windows use grilles that are attached to the interior edges of the windows with various things.

And that is the problem! The newest attachments work pretty well, but the older style is a sort of clip that simply doesn't work very well. The wood expands and contracts, the clips slide around or fall out (and are then stepped on!), and they never seem to keep the grilles tight against the glass. Maybe the worst part is that the grilles on my patio doors rattle a bit when I open and close them because they aren't tight against the glass and the perimeter of the windows.

I would think most VPN services allow you to select your server, and don't actually "send" you anywhere.

Mine suggests Phoenix, which, fine, but if it ever starts balking at the connection, I just go in and select a different one.

20 Some years ago our windows were totally annihilated by a huge hail storm. Miraculously, no broken panes, but the frames were a hot mess. Insurance money got us really excellent new windows, built locally and fits our climate. Got another direct hit by a hail storm a year later. No damage.

My first house in Colorado had a large single pane window facing the front of the house (on both floors)... and the houses across the street were built in a way so they framed for me the mountain view to the east.

The builders knew what they were doing. I loved that house. Had to sell it when "that woman" came into our lives.

44 I thought of this thread this week when I finally decided to re-install the 3 remaining casement window stops in various places in the house. My house has 20+ in-swing casement windows imported from England when the house was built in c. 1908, all leaded glass, and wouldn't you know it, someone lost the set-screws for two of the stops.
The threads are nothing I've EVER seen, I've tried everything. I suspect Whitworth or some Limey thread diameter and pitch but they are not standard to anything.
To see what I mean it's a Lid Stay, a brass/steel round bar with a hinge on one end and a threaded stop. Mine are some proprietary thread.

64 Our windows don’t have the grid, except the small ones. The big huge ones are a single piece down the middle, because they are modern! And very tall. The grid is between the glass, though.

When I picked out the windows, I stupidly didn’t get the kind that open in to clean. I actually don’t remember if that was even an option anymore? I just know my insistence on black frames, black grid thingy etc was difficult enough. These windows throughout the house are tall - and there are a lot of them.

You know, in hindsight, as I share these building of our house stories with y’all, I realize I may have been a bit of a pill during the process. Poor J.

My new windows are casement style with one big single pane. Turn a crank and they swing open sideways. Then you just pull down the screen hidden in the top and you're good to go.

CLR - Calcium Lime Rust remover. flush toilet prevent water from refilling the bowl. Lay paper towels over stains, soak towels with CLR. Wait. Give it 30 minutes or so. Wearing gloves removed the paper towels and scrub.

It's a trap! The set-screw housing missing the screw slides on the bar; the bar has two 'bells' on either end pressed on and can't be removed without destroying the entire assembly from 1908. It is impossible to re-tap the threads in the set-screw housing without damaging the bar itself!

109 Unfortunately, builders have been installing windows with mullions inside the glass panes for awhile now to mimic the old wood mullions of the past.

They don't look as charming or elegant.

I have a large half round, palladium looking window
over my front double doors with mullions inside the glass.

To give it a more "beefed" up elegant look I had flexible molding installed over the inside mullions on the inside and out.

They used industrial adhesive and I love the look.

Depends on what you want, and if one partner is aspirational or is jealous of their friends that have nicer houses. If both people just want a reasonably decent place to live and recognize gender boundaries (garage=Man, Kitchen=Woman) things tend to go a lot more smoothly. It's a trap! The set-screw housing missing the screw slides on the bar; the bar has two 'bells' on either end pressed on and can't be removed without destroying the entire assembly from 1908. It is impossible to re-tap the threads in the set-screw housing without damaging the bar itself!

206 Hybrid windows involve probably 4 different warranties? Installation, that was *me*, guaranteed to work/function and not fall out into the street/yard. No negligence in install (like locking them in place with Great Stuff). Then the wood, the glass, and then the vinyl on the outside. The darker colors go weird in the sun VERY fast: the brown turn pink, the greens turn a yellow color, neither of which have anything to do with the install.

Ha. My work installed solar panels on a curved building several years ago, and then people starting having car parts melting if they parked in certain spots. I can't remember the solution, might have been just closing off dangerous part of the parking lot.

I doubt if any of those atmospheric scientists did a study on how super heating the asphalt with the solar panel reflections negated any carbon reductions from the solar panel electricity.

My childhood home was being renovated until I was well into my teens. Mom and Dad worked together on it, but had different tasks. She was fantastic at painting and grout. Pretty handy with a mallet and a saw, too.

I remember her being unable to lift her arms without wincing because she had sanded all the kitchen cupboard doors by herself.

After Dad retired, they renovated the kitchen. The neighbors ribbed him about making his wife work two jobs. He had the tablesaw near the road. They could see her come home and work with him on measuring and cutting . He told me, "I think they're kind of fascinated because their wives just watch TV and go shopping while they work."

I have explained to my better half on more than one occasion that even the simplest seeming improvement project can turn into a multi day adventure... almost have her trained ti understand but the past couple projects went without that secret trap laid by the previous owner that sucks away another six hours and hundreds of dollars... hope she's not getting spoiled.

Last vernier caliper I got was $20 at a flea market. $15 on Amazon that measures to 1/128 inch. Or replace with modern casement stays. Dunno how many that would be if you replaced all to be alike. Prolly more than 1 vernier caliper and fastners, but that's a guess.

Heh. Ask people who have/had Pella aluminum clad wood windows and sliding doors from the 90's/early 2000s about their wonderful engineering. The glass to aluminum seals failed on many of them, trapping water inside the sash causing it to rot out. And the damage is usually invisible until it's too late. Pella did its best to evade responsibility and run out the clock on warranties. I was relatively lucky, when I heard about the issue around 2010 I had just two windows and a patio door that were goners. I was able to stop further damage to the others with a simple bead of silicone around the glass. But a lot of people had to replace all their windows.
