Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Racism at Elite Universities - Is it Time to Establish “Historically Asian Colleges”?In 2018, Hunter Biden tapped his father and a number of Biden family connections to help get his daughter into the University of Pennsylvania. Text messages and emails from Hunter Biden's laptop, reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon, show how Joe and Hunter Biden worked behind the scenes to get a subpar family member into one of the most selective schools in the country.Right now, I already assume that any white student at an Ivy is a privileged mediocrity who is there only because of connections and/or generous financial support to the school from his parents, and I would genuinely be embarrassed to have my name associated with schools such as Harvard or Penn. What would an Historically Asian College look like? I don’t know, but it doesn’t need the big leafy campus with resort-style dorms, or intercollegiate athletics, or a thriving campus-adjacent bar scene. It needs classrooms and instructors who have excelled at the disciplines being taught. High-end STEM learning is accelerated by being surrounded with those possessing similar intelligence. There should not be a restriction on the number of elite STEM students, nor should there be any restrictions on who can get into an Historically Asian College. The number of academically-elite HACs and classrooms need only be limited by the number of qualified applicants. Keeping the structure simple would allow the classroom capacity to scale up with qualified applicants. The race or socio-economic status of HAC applicants wouldn’t matter, only their intellectual capacity to study math and science at an elevated level. HACs would instantly become “elite” simply because of the critical mass of intelligence of those attending and graduating. That would be much more impressive than the current system, which allows just a trickle of academically brilliant undesirables to share an Ivy League campus with affirmative action admits and the mediocre children of the well-connected. A lot of us on the right have been cheering for the 20th century university model to collapse, especially since classic liberal education was replaced by political indoctrination and woke pseudo-science. A four-year college degree is not necessary for success in life, but there will always be a need for post-secondary education in certain skills, especially STEM. That is also true for specialized disciplines such as architecture, nursing, accounting, etc. (And let’s be honest, as much as we mock degrees in the humanities, journalism, and the various “grievance studies,” even many business majors such as Management or Marketing provide little more than a degree in the “the college experience” with a sheepskin at the end.) Historically Asian Colleges might be better thought of as conservatories of science, technology, engineering, and math. Elite musical talent often come out of conservatories rather than colleges. Why not use a similar model to develop elite STEM talent? Also, and it’s a discussion for another day, but conservatories in lieu of universities for other fields requiring post-secondary education is a discussion that should be had. Expecting that the Supreme Court would abolish affirmative action, some universities have recently eliminated testing requirements that reveal the scholastic aptitude of incoming students.
--------------------------- Aptitude has nothing to do with SAT. Its measures achievement and can deduce IQ. No college wants kids with aptitude they want students that are easy to teach and will pay the freight to get an extremely overpriced certificate. We are a vampire nation. We feed off our young. Harvard is obviously distraught about the abolition of affirmative action and how that will affect what had been legal racial discrimination. In response the school is seeking to maintain a separate-but-equal-to-affirmative-action mechanism to perpetuate their “good kind” of racial discrimination, so it now wants certain applicants (e.g. non-white, non-Asian) to include in their admissions application a "discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise.”
++++ I assume that a white person's essay on the corrosive nature of Affirmative Action policies, "reparations" policies, race-based welfare programs, etc. would not contribute to his admissions score. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 17, 2023 11:05 AM (t0OGg) 20

With the college tuition pricing crisis out of control, it's time for state run universities to ban the enrollment of foreign students.
The colleges were created by and operated on taxpayer dollars for centuries, and now they fill them up full of every slant-eye, towel-head and punjab hadji because they can get more tuition dollars out of a foreigner than they can from an American. And then those foreigners take all of their learning back to China or India and build technology and bombs and diseases to use against America. And then you wind up with some mush-mouth Hindu saying hambla-bimbla-bee-bee-bop-bop bullshit that you can't understand as your grad assistant professor. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 17, 2023 11:10 AM (GzDfN) ++++ Two general meanings: 1. A specialty school, usually associated with art (music, dance, painting, etc.). The idea of an "engineering conservatory" is a bit outside that definition, but would fall under "specialty school" as a concept. These are not colleges or universities, which have larger academic programs. A conservatory does the one thing, and seeks to do it at an extremely high standard. 2. A conservatory is a building or room having glass or other transparent roofing and walls, used as a greenhouse or a sunroom. Usually it refers to a space attached to a conventional building such as a house, especially in the United Kingdom. Elsewhere, especially in America, it can often refer to a large freestanding glass-walled building in a botanic garden or park, sometimes also called a palm house if tall enough for trees. Municipal conservatories became popular in the early 19th century.

I am not sure what I think about the whole admissions thing.
Fairfax County has Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Top ranked high school in the whole country. Then things happened. Like not enough people of color there. Except for Asians (which would be what we used to call Orientals PLUS subcontinent Asians, mostly Indians). The entering class in 2018 I think was 73% Asian. This caused Fairfax administrators to reconsider the whole concept of having the top ranked HS in the country, and destroyed its admissions testing regime. You know, to be more equitable. Clearly at 73% Asians are "over represented" in the student body as compared the national and local demographics. Is that necessarily bad? No, I don't think so. But it is also possible that they could arrange the selection process such that the makeup is 100% Asian (they can arrange it any way they want - but just based on "merit" - who has the best test scores and grades - they could do that.) Is that a bad thing? I think it might be. Posted by: blaster at July 17, 2023 11:18 AM (Jk9SN) 88

This is going to take a couple of decades to work out. The Ivy League, just like all other major institutions, is dead insofar as it's ability to turn out anything but halfwits interspersed with a few glorified mediocrities. Organizations, such as Government and Major Corporations, which hire based on only who's "in the club" and don't care even the slightest bit about quality or intelligence. But the companies that *do* care about such things will know where to look to hire actual qualified people - and over time, they will eventually end up in control.

The capture of the Urban School districts by the Teachers Union/Democrat Party apparatus is the root of the problem. The Urban school districts do not exist to educate the kids but to provide a jobs program for Democrat constituents connected to massive political fundraising. A reviewer for Quillette magazine reviewed Martin Peretz's autobiography. Peretz owned the New Republic magazine for years, back when liberals supported free speech and democracy.
Peretz (and the reviewer) also worked for Harvard's Social Studies program, which was Harvard's version of a Great Books program, only using 19th and 20th authors (like Freud), rather than Greek classics. The reviewer talked about some of the illustrious graduates of Harvard's Social Students program, and managed to come out with the most clueless, unaware statement I've ever seen: [printed in my next comment] Posted by: A Provocative Parade Of Perverts! at July 17, 2023 11:23 AM (2tUFv) 107

The crucial point is that majors in Social Studies graduated from Harvard having read classic works in defense of the market economy, liberal democracy, the importance of ideological as well as economic factors in politics and, with Tocqueville and Freud, a serious dose of sober and anti-utopian liberalism and skepticism about communism. Today, when I observe the passionate support for Ukraine joined to a sober assessment of American national interests expressed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Attorney General Merrick Garland’s defense of the rule of law, or Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer’s pushback against threats to our democracy from the American Right, I hear echoes of Tocqueville, Weber, and Freud that were central to Social Studies seminars when they were all students in the program.

If admissions were based strictly on merit and the school had outstanding teachers, only the brightest students would be accepted. The admissions team would be reviewing students who are smarter than they are, choosing that team would be difficult. Teachers would work with students who are smarter than they are, teachers would compete for jobs at such a school. Administrators would be working with students, teachers, and other staff who are very bright. Hiring administrators would be tough. Such a school should successfully compete for research grants. The research coming from such a school would be first-class. The school should generate significant revenue from licensing patent rights. It's not like Thor: The Dark World was some sort of masterpiece, and yet it didn't kill the momentum of the MCU at the time. It's not everything, but so much content made the brands much less special while filling the space with so much information that you had to pay attention to all of it in order to keep up at all. In olden times, an engineering degree took five years, because students had to take the same core curriculum as the human race did. In the wake of Sputnik that all changed. The crowds chanting "Hey-ho, Western Civ has got to go" were not radicals; they were Junior Science Assistants, dreading that one Gentleman's C on their transcript might delay the employment permit that would slide them into a nameless faceless back bench in the bowels of some megacorp or government department. They got their way, and now can communicate only with each other. Once in a while some big outfit cleans house, and then you have to hear the turned-out apprentices whine about those damned English majors who ruined their lives. This is all just a sideshow anyways. The brief resurgence in US manufacturing under PDT has been mostly pissed away again, and state DOTs/federal DOT are teeing up a generation's worth of, uh, "diversely engineered" public projects. It's not like we have much use for STEM grads anymore. Tech is getting the Central American landscaper crew treatment, but from India. An interesting window into this is hitting up discussions among the 20-something crowd comparing notes on which degrees are resulting in jobs, and for how much. It's not that there isn't STEM money to be made - it's that the degrees aren't worth it *at all*, in most cases.
Even the prog project to convince Russia that it's a good idea to Leroy Jenkins into WW3 is only spinning up a sad ghost of our pre-91 production and design capacity. We make good weapons - but only when we actually bother to make them. Posted by: somedood at July 17, 2023 12:08 PM (BW9UA) 307
"DailyMail: Democrats launch creepy attack ad showing an elderly GOP congressman WATCHING young couple have sex to stop them using a condom ahead of state elections focused on reproductive rights"
Saw that posted up on twatter. Based on a complete and total lie, but still a sharp and clever ad once you pushed the titanic untruth out of the way. And sad to say, effective if the dopes screaming in the twattie comments were any indication. Posted by: Boxx Culvert, 2023 pronouns: Shad/dap at July 17, 2023 12:09 PM (HACXu) 308
The only reason I would not consider Asian testing and GPA on same level for admittance as maybe others is that testing and grades are their single focus. I need to see something that goes with that Something natural and innate. I would look for that in all candidates.

No, do NOT "focus exclusively on STEM disciplines" at your proposed universities. Maybe in the upper classes, but the first couple years absolutely must include the classic Liberal Arts of Literature, and History, and Geography, and Foreign Language, and Philosophy, and so forth. To limit the education to an exclusive STEM focus is to produce a graduate every bit as narrow and blinkered - and as vulnerable to propaganda - as are today's Lefties.
The European model does that kind of focus, and while it produces very talented engineers, those engineers know nothing outside of their discipline. I've worked with them all my life. It is from the broader, more populist type of education that produces the individualism of Americans, our can-do-ism, an expertise in problem solving, and our willingness to take risks. We are losing that in this chronic STEM! STEM! STEM! focus, and it is to our severe detriment. I see it happening all around, and I despair of it. Posted by: polynikes at July 17, 2023 12:04 PM (5e0cQ)" Any parent depending on a traditional degree path to success is delusional and out-of-the-loop unless the kid wants to literally be a neurosurgeon or something. Spouse and I both make an obscene amount of money working in tech. Our degrees don't matter - any degrees are basically worthless for hiring in our field, and in adjacent fields. We know a bunch of different routes into cutting edge, high-paying jobs that are cool as shit and have nothing at all to do with higher-ed credentialism. It's not 1980 or 1990 anymore. Public HS is worthless and degrees don't impress anyone - you need to get the kids pointed in the right direction and support them learning on their own, with skillsets they can take anywhere. I would say it's never been as easy to learn, but now you need to add in "navigating censorship" a bit which throws in a wrench. Posted by: somedood at July 17, 2023 12:16 PM (BW9UA) 316

Here's a thought:
Harvard, and the other "elite's" training schools may be using diversity students as a fig leaf. Thr number of registered freshmen students is irrelevant in contrast to the makeup of the graduating classes. These.are the training grounds for tomorrow's "Mastersof the Universe ", or Klaus Shwabs government boys... what isthe ratio of first year registered vs graduated among minority vs "legacy" students? Could be their fig leaf of choice to cover up some white, oldmoney privileges? Posted by: Augusto Perez at July 17, 2023 02:17 PM (QEDky) 319

Here is my solution to the cut-throat competition for high-school students to get into competitive colleges; since Harvard has only 1600 Freshmen allowed in September, they should make it 10,000 and just squeeze them into their dormrooms in the Yard and the upperclassmen Houses. Students are smaller these days.
Or just name all the colleges in the US "Harvard" or "Yale" and perhaps, like McDonalds and other franchises do with their cookie-cutter buildings, just recreate "Harvard Yards" on every campus with fine Georgian 1720-1880 brick buildings, recreate all the classroom buildings too (except for anything Harvard built after 1945....ugly brutalism hulks of concrete like their Science Center (built to represent an old-timey camera via funds from George Eastman), and recreate the Final Clubs so everyone can be a Porcellian, Owl, A.D., Fox, Spee, Delphic, Fly, Phoenix SPK member and wear tuxes all the time. Heck, the Mayo Clinic has satellite clinics in Jacksonville and Scottsdale, why not "Harvard"??? Posted by: Donovan Nuera at July 17, 2023 07:13 PM (LKMDZ) 322
Have every accredited college have a pre/post general knowledge test of 5000 questions to see which students are the smartest entering college and which students are smartest upon graduation. See also which school has the best improvement. Can break it down into majors as well. Extra credit points for making perfect plate of scrambled eggs, a complicated cocktail, tying a necktie, building a spice rack, setting up a VCR/entertainment system, grooming. Winners get cash prizes too. Also be able to ID different WWII aircraft by flashcards.
