2nd from the top looks like one I inherited from my grandfather, who died long ago. It has the deep seasoned color in the wood, from being held many many times.

I have one the same as the third from the top. The rubber handle cover matches. Not the first of that type - the original handle cover came loose and the metal handle tube would slide out - the incredible lengthening hammer, or perhaps there is a sexual inuendo there. They have driven many a nail of many sorts in 43 years of home ownership and renovation.

At my table, there was a line of 40 hopeful jobseekers, mostly seasonal agricultural workees, not skilled machists. I had to separate them quickly. I called out down the line: " If you don't own more than two types of hammers, this job is probably not for you." The line disappeared and I hired one of the two remaining prospects.

nurse ratched, our cats destroyed all of our upholstery too. What can you do? Cats gotta cat. So when they had finally shredded everything to the point of having to buy new, we went with high end patio furniture that has rattan legs, sides and backs.
They still tried, but were not able to inflict the same kind of damage. Stuff still looks fine (if a bit odd, in one's living room) after 10 years of multiple cats. Posted by: cfo mom at July 16, 2023 03:16 PM (Q8bDL) 198

One day, he gets a call asking if he can repair one of their machines they haven't been able to repair. He says it will cost $10,000 and the company agrees. So he goes up to the machine, feels around, takes out a hammer, and hits it; it starts working right away. A company man says, "We paid $10,000 for you to hit it with a hammer?" "No", the man says, "that was only $100. The remainder was for knowing WHERE to hit it." Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at July 16, 2023 03:28 PM (ynpvh) 233

When the estwing framing hammers first came out, several other carpenter friends bragged on them, I picked one up, 1st day on the job, toe nailing rafters to topplates, glanced off the rafter, hit my finger with that bladed shaft, broke my finger clean in half....threw the hammer as far as I could, never went to look for it. I eventually ended up w a "California Framer", hand made at that time, got it at the Whole Earth Store in SF, still use it as my "Daily Driver".
BEST hammer ever? Original True Temper Rocket, 20oz, straight claw, 16" steel Handle. Online now they are selling for $150 or more, I'm looking for one at every estate sale. Found one with the fiber handle the guy had marked for $3.00...told him those were selling on ebay for $65-85, he might want to sell it that way. He looked it up, took it off the table...as I was leaving, I turned back, asked him if he'd take $20 for it, He said "Oh Hell yes, I thought you were gonna demand it for $3" ...Not me. As I was leaving again he said... "that mahogany sailing dinghy you were looking at....(Nutshell pram, with mast, sail, oars, trailer and elect trolling motor)...You can take it, for $400"(ask was $800). I did. Little known secret. I have a magic hammer.
Miner Ted. He found me in the deserts of Nevada about 12 years ago. He's a single jack from a remote mine dating around the 1880's. Head is piened over like a MF, half cracked, now welded and handled with a piece of pipe I found in the same area. Built it while bored waiting for parts on a job site. Moves pins like a dream. Doesn't damage what you hit with it. Almost like a steel dead blow hammer. Can only be magic. And of course I made it. Posted by: Reforger at July 16, 2023 03:33 PM (B705c) 243

At one time, I had a very "ergonomic" hammer, that had a slight tilt of the handle to the hammer head. I found that using it made it almost impossible to drive a nail crooked. You could almost always drive a straight nail.
My son was working for a guy that was gutting and remodeling houses some years ago, and he was using my tools. And that's where I think it disappeared. And I have never been able to find another one in conventional tool stores. Between me and my wife (who has her father's tools) we have about a dozen hammers of different types. They are all over the house. And screw drivers. We have about 50 of them. Really. I got a new tool yesterday, that I am using to strip the paint off the deck. It is a diamond-bladed grinding wheel that goes on an angle grinder. About $58, but it works like a charm. Posted by: Barnacle Bill the sailor at July 16, 2023 03:48 PM (tjZg/) 267

263 I still have a couple of things I made in HS wood shop. This was shortly after wood was invented.

I can still drive a16d coated sinker in treated wood with two whacks (ok maybe three) one of which is the set. 22oz Estwing.

. . . I want a dumpster container dropped in our driveway that we will fill with stuff that's gotta go. My son did this very thing last month and it is the best idea that I have heard in a long time.
Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at July 16, 2023 03:27 PM (pNxlR) ***** I did that last year when I downsized to a smaller home and had to get rid of all the junk I had accumulated and inherited over my (ahem) 29 years. It seemed impossible until then. Filled it up twice. Posted by: Elinor, who usually looks lurkily at July 16, 2023 04:08 PM (kF2jL) 291

Waahhh ... my favorite hammer, with the so-smooth wooden handle, is still missing. I could begin an all-out search for it. But I don't need it now. *resumes refreshing and scrolling* Posted by: Weak Geek at July 16, 2023 04:09 PM (p/isN) 292

Another former professional nail-beater here. Back in the day I went through 50 pounds of Cement Coated 16d Sinkers during a standard day of framing. Then the Green Vinyl Sinkers came out and did not get one's hands as black. I worked with another carpenter who told me he helped an old rancher build a shed and they used nails the old guy had straightened and saved for years. He also said the old guy was so cheap that he used a rock for a hammer... I have a "thing" for hammers and, although, I have a lot of hammers I cannot stop myself from checking out the hammer display anytime I am in a hardware store. My favorite hammer is my 10 ounce Warrington by Record. I even have a 13 pound post hammer that better men than I must have used to pound in tent stakes at a circus. Wooden-handled hammers are good. So is the forged-shank Estwing on the bottom. The tube-shank at #3? Not so much.

Square drive screws or Robertson screws, are also a fine instrument to have. They stay on your bit without the need for a third hand or a magnetized bit. Fucking Canadians finally got something right.
Posted by: Dr. Bone at July 16, 2023 02:32 PM (KVGVf) Robertson screws used to wedge tightly onto the driver bit, but the quality of mass-market driver bits and Robertson-head screws has gotten poor. I found I had to hammer the screws onto the driver bit. Maybe Lee Valley Tools still has the good ones, but those you get at Home Despot are crap. Put this Canuck in the Torx camp, for wood screws, at least. I have used a metric fuckton of Torx wood screws in my AZ house reno. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 16, 2023 05:02 PM (ZPLkc) 296
The first thing I do is strip that off and redo the finish with BLO.

Pro-tip:
Straight claw framing hammers as defensive tools: Use the claws. The round hole in the skull created by the hammer face cause the hammer to get stuck. The claws are tapered and make extraction much easier...or so I have been told. There was that incident where the guy coming up the ladder had his skull cleaved by the carpenter on the roof with a rigging axe. When asked why he had done it the axeman said: "For asking too many questions." The lunch-time conversation kind of dried up after that. Posted by: waepnedmann at July 16, 2023 05:43 PM (iRGPp) 299
An old hammer is an old friend. I have hammers nearly as old as I am. I bought a Stanley when I was filing in on a roofing crew when I was seventeen, which was 1980. That’s my favorite. I think I’d cry if I ever lost it.

The right hammer for the job:
Found one of my guys using a waffle head framing hammer to drive finish nails, leaving it's waffle imprint everywhere. I instructed him to use a small smooth face "tack driver" instead. He curled his nose up at the little sissy hammer. Told him "it's kinda like sex, Kenny, it's not so much the size of the hammer as it is how you swing it". No more waffle head marks after that. It's hard for me to get rid of tools. Hammers? Yeah I probably have that many. Screwdrivers? Fuggetaboutit! I still have ancient tools I got from my dad. Oh and I used to have three compressor for the two nail guns. I did cut down to one compressor, however.

Amateur. I got a tool drawer with 12 hammers, a separate one for mallets and sledge, and my 3 foot wide screwdriver drawer is not big enough. That’s what is not placed strategically in multiple tool bags and drawers, two vehicles and an outdoor shed. Of course it helps to have been sole surviving descendant of three handymen. Wait a minute, that sounds not right the way things go these days. Sigh.
