[So-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden issued an executive order late Thursday that orders ready 3,000 U.S. army reservists in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which “provides rotational deployments of combat-credible forces to Europe” especially related to the 2014 Russia invasion of Crimea. The operation has been designated a “contingency operation”, according to Army Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Sims II, Joint Staff director of operations. “This new designation benefits troops and families with increases in authorities, entitlements and access to the reserve component forces and personnel,” Sims said. “This [executive order] reaffirms the unwavering support and commitment to defend NATO‘s eastern flank in the wake of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war on Ukraine,” Sims said.Wait, what? "NATO's eastern flank?" Forgetting the geography for a moment, does any sane person believe Russia is going to imminently launch an unprovoked attack on the member nations that border Ukraine? Because, for those not in the know, Ukraine is NOT in NATO. Seriously, this is absolute madness. It should be noted that we would not be in this situation had we a) not insisted Ukraine hand over its leftover Soviet nukes in exchange for Chamberlain-esque guarantees and more crucially b) shredding our promise in the Russians' face that we would not expand NATO to the east. Do these criminals not realize that this is not Moammar Qaddafi, Saddam Hussein or Slobodan Milosovic? This is Vladimir Putin and Russia. You know, the former Soviet Union that still possesses an arsenal of nuclear weapons up to and including intercontinental ballistic missiles equipped with multiple warheads. Of course, instead of looking at Vladimir Putin, let's instead take a look at our now Bladder-Leak Puddin, the pervert criminal who was installed into the White House and ostensibly the figurehead of this monstrous shit-show. If we're sending troops to Ukraine, then when did this happen?

They're in control and they know it. And there isn't a damned thing we can do about it. In political terms this criminal blundering will have zero consequences because the game which installed Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants in the first place is rigged. From where I sit I don't see how anyone is going to beat either him or whoever replaces him if that eventuality occurs in the next 16 months. 3,000 reservists to Europe. That alone is going to not fill the Russians with girlish glee, to say the least. Does anyone really think that not a one of them is going to step over the border into Ukraine? Does anyone think that there is a better than even chance that we already have military and/or intel assets on the ground there? Seriously, what are they playing at here? It can't really be wagging the dog since as I stated, the election is in the bag. Is it just about the money?
On June 5th, the neo-liberal POLITICO news website published an open letter entitled ‘Ukraine Needs a Roadmap to NATO Membership ASAP‘, calling for Western leaders at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania this week to commit to supplying Ukraine with weapons, fighter jets, and tanks in “sufficient quantities to prevail on the battlefield." The letter argued that Western leaders should help facilitate a “comprehensive transition” of the weapons systems being used in the war against Russia up to “NATO standards." . . . Although POLITICO listed the names of the 46 ‘foreign policy experts’ and claimed to have outlined their “affiliations”, the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft — which argues for a less interventionist U.S. foreign policy — claimed that at least 21 of the signatories currently have connections to the military-industrial complex that were left unmentioned by the news outlet. Another to have their defence industry affiliations overlooked was Ret. Gen. Wesley Clark, who led the President Clinton-ordered NATO bombing campaign of Yugoslavia in the Kosovo War dubbed Operation Allied Force. The article describes Clark as a “U.S. Army, 12th Supreme Allied Commander, Europe; senior fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center” while failing to mention his role as a senior board and company adviser at Vaya Space, which stated that Clark was hired to “support investment in and expansion of Vaya Space’s new technologies to the highly attractive Space (launch) and Defense (strategic and tactical missile) landscape.” The investigation from the think tank also noted that numerous signatories have roles at the Atlantic Council think tank, which is funded in part by some of the top American arms manufacturers, including Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon. One such example noted by the publication was ex-George W. Bush diplomat Paula Dobriansky, who was merely described by POLITICO as “Former under-secretary of state for global affairs”, despite her now serving as the Vice Chair of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security.Remember now that this is Ukraine, arguably among the most if not the most corrupt government on the planet (with us coming up fast). It's current regime was installed via an Orange Revolution organized by Foggy Bottom bottom dweller Victoria Nuland among others, in which Joe Biden as well as other notable politicians and their kin have wet their beaks via Burisma in particular to the tune of multi-millions. And hundreds of millions of dollars in aid sent to Zelensky remains unaccounted for, including weapons sent to bolster his army that instead were supposedly sold on the black market.

If you are still around, transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Muldoon linked a video above (Pixy thread). The need for aortic valve replacement depends on how symptomatic the stenosis is, and how much it impacts your quality of life. My MIL was willing to put up with the fatigue, but after she nearly died from the flu because her heart could not keep up with the demand from the illness, she knew it was time for the surgery. And TAVR is pretty benign as far a heart surgeries go.

Once you see these are trial balloons, the whole thing gets a lot less funny.

This was something I noticed during Iraq as well. There was an odd tenor among some of the editorialists that they needed to 'feel like people understood the war was going on.' It was almost a nostalgia for the days of WWII rationing of goods and the draft. It struck me funny back then, and it seems even more bizarre now.
I think it has something to do with they want what that sense of National unity brought with it- the ability to do whatever they pleased, because there was a war on.

I don’t know who’s driving this Ukraine madness but I know it’s not mush brain puppet Brandon. The mind virus infects even tennis. A couple days ago, Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) played Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) in the quarterfinals. It was a brilliant hard fought match with Svitolina winning a 3rd set nail biter. But then of course the madness intrudes… rather than show a minimal amount of respect to her opponent and shakes hands, the Ukrainian refused to shake the Belarusian’s hand…. Even though Azarenka has spoken in opposition to the war and actually lives in the US. In fact all the Ukrainian players refuse the post-match shake with any Russian or Belarusian player. I find it petty and childish…. None of these tennis players are Putin advisors….

Those soldiers I met while in who came from a family tradition were often more imbued in the warrior mentality. You want more of that, not less. Unless of course your goal is not an effective military but rather the opposite…

Joe Biden issued an executive order late Thursday that orders ready 3,000 U.S. army reservists in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which “provides rotational deployments of combat-credible forces to Europe” especially related to the 2014 Russia invasion of Crimea.

Those 3,000 will survive maybe a week if they have to engage. It will take too long to reinforce them and they're facing a real army. If the US military thinks it is actually going to have to engage with Russia, it should mobilize in earnest and send at least two combat divisions and stage them in Europe. I don't think we should do that - if the assessment is that Ukraine will lose without direct American engagement, then Ukraine should lose. But if the military commanders have the same assessment but a different conclusion, they should prepare for the inevitability of their course.
Because a small, token gesture like this is just going to pile up American corpses if it goes hot.

We don't have two full combat divisions or the Brigade equivalents that are able to be mobilized and sent to Europe in any meaningful time line. We could get an airborne division and maybe a couple of Light Infantry Brigade Combat Teams and get them there within a month or so but that would be pushing it.
We no longer have the military resources and transport capabilities that we had 20 or even 10 years ago.

We don't have two full combat divisions or the Brigade equivalents that are able to be mobilized and sent to Europe in any meaningful time line. We could get an airborne division and maybe a couple of Light Infantry Brigade Combat Teams and get them there within a month or so but that would be pushing it.
We no longer have the military resources and transport capabilities that we had 20 or even 10 years ago.

Sending a few battalions because it's easy and won't look bad to the American people (because full mobilizations are disruptive and unpopular, especially for a war that too many people are on the fence about already) will just get those battalions slaughtered.

Yup. Much of this country is uninhabitable without it and without it, the costs of physical plant are utterly unmanageable. Why do you think there is so little *old* stuff in the South? Except for big structures made of stone (court houses, churches, etc.), there are damn few old buildings. They rot away and get replaced. Until A/C and electricity, which keeps everything healthy and standing.

Ya know, this would be a smart time for China to invade Taiwan. The more delays there are, the stronger Taiwan gets. They have four nuclear reactors, and maybe could get even uranium gun type nukes in the future.

• IP is still being developed and deployed in Taiwan, an invasion will likely halt continuation. Does Mainland want to be take a snapshot and stick with it for the next bunch of years?

I have tipped guys who collect my 'junk' and haul it off. It's a flat fee, usually, and I periodically have a shit ton of crap to get rid of. So they get a little extra for the effort.

The potential for nuclear exchange makes this a risk not worth taking. Not enough at stake. That said, that potential is very low. I do not think either side will launch a nuke.
My opposition to US involvement here is more quotidian. For one thing, we are no better than Russia in this. Our cynical empire building in Ukraine is not magically more moral than Putin's.
But most importantly - I'm not worried about nuclear war, because that is not the objective. Neither is victory, even. The objective is a protracted conventional war that drains our blood and treasure for the benefit of our ruling class. If we win and Ukraine remains their plaything, that's just icing on the cake to them.
But we probably won't. Strike that. Definitely won't. We don't know how to do that anymore.

Not customary or expected, but definitely appreciated. Especially if you will be getting a second, third, or fourth delivery from the same place.
Most places only run one or two delivery crews. They'll remember you.

If its heavy and the guy does a good job I often will. Also, how easy is it to get into your house? If you've got a wide front door you can go right in and parking right in front that's one thing. If you live in some urban area in a 3rd floor walk up you should probably tip the guy bringing up a fridge...

Back then, most people didn't have it. They didn't know what they were missing. Same as people all across the south in the 1700's - 1930's.
My next door neighbor before we moved didn't use ac even when it was 100+ outside. But then, he worked construction and it would have killed him to work outside in the heat, come home to ac, then go back out to the heat the next day.

Hollywood always gets a pass. Hollywood types often adopt minority children for the status it brings them. This was *really* popular in the mid aughts. I heard the phenomenon derisively referred to as "Benneton Babies." For a while there, Hollywood people tried to adopt the entire rainbow to show how good they were.
I don't have a problem with interracial adoption, but in Hollywood's case it's all so craven.

That Trey Parker and Matt Stone bought Casa Bonita is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. If you didn't grow up in the Denver area (or in the mountains outside of Denver), you probably don't quite get why that is hilarious, but trust me that it is.
And yeah. It's not a restaurant, it's an event. Kind of like a weird, pseudo-Mexican Chuck-e-Cheese. Great fun as a kid. Run around, do the maze, play games, see the cliff-diving show, etc. I don't remember the food being *bad,* but it certainly wasn't good.

What i don't get is, there never was a path to victory for Ukraine without Americans dying in their mud plains.
Why anyone bought the lie that Russia was a hollow shell, that they would give up and go home if they didn't take the whole Ukraine in 3 months, that all we had to do was sanction.
Then money.
Then military equipment. Then advisors to train them.
Then more money.
Then more equipment.
Then more money.
After all that, they are still pretending it's March of 2022 and the original lie is still true and any day now Russia is going I go home.

We don't have two full combat divisions or the Brigade equivalents that are able to be mobilized and sent to Europe in any meaningful time line.
So some unlucky soldiers are sent into Ukraine knowing full well that those who sent them are feckless, corrupt cowards who will easily trade the soldier's blood for cash.

I did grow up in CO and I do find it funny, but also quite wonderful. They've rescued this funky, oddball local place that so many of us enjoyed as kids, and with our own kids, and sunk $40 million into it. I really want it to be a success.
As for the food, everyone I know agrees it was bad, but that was part of the charm
