2 An 'aggressive sea otter' is scaring surfers and stealing their boards
Otter 841, a five-year-old female, has prompted police in Santa Cruz to issue a warning

Police in Santa Cru, are warning surfers of an unusual threat in the waters of the California community. An “aggressive sea otter” is approaching, biting and scratching surfboards – and in some cases climbing aboard and making off with them.

A widely shared video shows one hapless surfer trying to fight off the creature, which hangs onto the board and at one point seems to rush the man, forcing him to let go. When the man flips the board, it briefly dislodges the animal, but moments later it’s back and chewing on the side of the board.

Well Ike is 2-0 versus Rommel (beat him in Tunisia and Normandy). Rommel had flair, and Brits just love Generals who thump them and don't win the war, but in the big picture all the Africa Korps did was provide training for both the US and UK armies in combat and they surrendered 250000 men to them in the end.

I'll allow it.

Even Kasserine Pass, where Rommel gave the front echelon a good thumping, was a failure for the Germans. See, after defeating them, he moved forward into a valley where our Tank Destroyer artillery was deployed on the far side ridge line and our regular guns were there too. They put out a blizzard of fire that pinned the Germans down stopped them cold. The Germans retreated away from even that green army and the rest was just a matter of time before the Germans surrendered there.

They are a serious country, unlike the US. They kept all the 'obsolete' stuff in warehouses like old style artillery. Yeah, its not precision, but you don't need precision to shell a small town or trench over weeks and months and bleed the guys there. You don't need a high class tank to back up the infantry in blasting a pillbox. Russia has been pulling out old T55s from storage because for a lot of jobs the 100 mm shell does the same work as a 120 mm shell in the modern tanks and there's enough for everyone to have fire support.

Being able to deploy your strength and materials IS generalship. Warfare isn't a sport, you don't get style points in real life.

Russia in WWII survived to win in the end, but they never had to solve the problem about how to even get their troops across oceans and continents to even get to the field. To the credit of the few officers we had pre-war, they DID think about the problems and were able to put a large army in Africa within a year and another one across the Pacific to the Solomons in the same time. While at the same time shipping a good portion of war material to Britain and Russia.

Concur. Most American generals, outside of Patton, are 4 to 1 leather asses who would have blown their brains out faced with Rommel’s supply tether and would have made Marshal Graziani look like a tiger in comparison.

Rommel would have dusted Monty if he had 10% of what Ike worked with on a cloudy day.

That's the entire issue. He could NEVER have 10 percent of what Ike had. Because even though the Germans had plenty of panzer divisions cooling their heels in Poland in 1941 before Barbarossa, the Germans and Italians couldn't supply what they had, so Rommel had to go idle and wait for resupply, water, more tanks. Meanwhile, the US re-armed 8th army shipping tanks AROUND Africa or even sliding a convoy right past Rommel through the Med. Germans never were serious about logistics. There was no sense in Germany going into Africa in the first place given the constraints they put on themselves.

UK and USA had to maintain overseas trade and territories, so they already knew how to plan for moving men and material great distances, and got better at it. yes, Germany had no business going to North Africa, but Axis politics necessitated pulling Mussolini out of the Lybian and Somalian holes his 1940 offenses fell into.

The Sovs got lucky and that doesn't even consider our materiale aid.

Your are correct that modern warfare is beans and then bullets, which the Allies dominated.
Germany was at a disadvantage and was going to lose after 1942, with a 3.5 to 1 advantage to the Allies.

And it still was almost an end run by 1944-1945 due to Germany’s officers and enlisted men doing the most with less.

151 "even though the Germans had plenty of panzer divisions cooling their heels in Poland in 1941 before Barbarossa"

Actually, they really didn't. Because of panzer underproduction, the # of panzer divisions was increased by reducing the number of panzer regiments from 2/division to 1/division. This was generally augmented by additional motorized infantry, but that's mostly infantry in trucks with maybe some machine guns mounted. (In East Africa, they call those "technicals".) Also, per my earlier comment, the panzers were severely undergunned. Interestingly, Herman Hoth (Col. General commanding Panzer Group 3 in Barbarossa) said that Hitler actually wanted a more powerful gun on the panzers but his industrialist sycophants undercut him. Not that I wish they hadn't....

156 The Germans also encouraged competition in industry while on a war footing rather than settling on one good design and giving everybody a contract. Worse than that, they were always looking for the best of the best rather than something adequate that could be turned out in huge numbers (see M4 Sherman, P40 series aircraft).

157 I forgot to mention the Greek hole of 1940 that Mussolini also lost an army into, requiring Wehrmacht lifeline to escape. The Balkans Campaign of Spring 1941 delayed Barbarossa by six crucial weeks, weather wise, in order to help Mussolini out, and left the Third Reich saddled with Greece and Yugoslavia, two turbulent conquests which required abundant force needed elsewhere to keep subdued. The Italians did their best to keep Rommel and their own army supplied, but since Hitler couldn't be bothered to allocate resources to neutralize Gibraltar and Malta, they had a hot time of it, and never could deliver enough for a decisive strike. El Alamein & Operation Torch shoved Allied logistical and strategic supremacy into Rommel's face.

Sovs had plenty of bad luck, but had been intelligent enough to have a serious industrial program backing up their military, training from Germany in armor, and production lines and a tank design from America that would let them outproduce Germany if they held out long enough to survive the first rush. Their moving entire factories east ahead of the Panzers was something no other country even thought of, and they did it. And then they were smart enough to put the Commie ideology aside and fight for Russia for the duration.

Met an old German general who was a friend of a friend of mine. Near Bad Tolz in Bavaria. Interesting guy. He was in charge of running the trains for the war effort...he had a counterpart who ran the trains for the Jews. My friend wrote his thesis on how they managed this given bombing, blown bridges, etc. Fascinating discussion. Short answer...they argued a lot and he knew the war was lost by mid-43. The logistics just werent there, nor the rail system to support the troops on two fronts.
And...he bought the bier!

So the Germans started to complain after destroying say the 301 rifle division that in a few weeks another 301 rifle division popped up on their intel. How can this be?

169 I forgot to mention the Greek hole of 1940 that Mussolini also lost an army into, requiring Wehrmacht lifeline to escape.

Posted by: exdem13 at July 13, 2023 09:07 PM (W+kMI)

Six weeks is an exaggeration put out by the woulda-coulda-shoulda historian crowd. A few weeks, perhaps, but spring was late in 1941. The extra hundreds of miles of wear and tear on the units deployed into the Balkans, now that was a dead loss on the books. It also got the airborne corps of Germany massacred so much Hitler never risked using them again.

Britain meddling in the Balkans and Greece was no threat to Germany in a practical sense, a fire brigade force would be enough to cover that. Making the Italians embarrassment good is no reason to do anything, good or bad.

Rommel was sure of it, and so were his subordinates who survived to write their memoirs later. I've read some hypothetical studies of it, and some dramatized "what if" scenarios. the thing is though, just about all of those depend on a few factors to work.
1. Hitler approves enough men and material diverted from the East Front to give Rommel and the Italians legs. (Two-thirds of the Axis ground forces in Africa were Italian; Rommel couldn't have won without them.)
2. Malta, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Desert Air Force somehow get nerfed out of being useful.
3. The Eighth Army and other Allied ground units pull a 1940 France style collapse, and fail to defend Egypt properly.
4. the Eighth Army's upgrades and resupply delivered via Lend-Lease don't have an impact on the ground fighting.

Viktor Suvarov, a defector, wrote a good book or two on inner workings of life in the USSR and the army, often very funny.

What the Russians did was when a unit got near to the end of its training, it would split in half. The colonel and half the officers and men would head out, the rest would get reinforced and train again for their new jobs. The unit heading for the front would also get reinforced, and recruits would quickly learn from their fellows. The unit in reserve would train up its new officers and men to work together....and would split again when they were ready.

Sure the unit was weaker heading to the front, but at the crisis a weak unit is better than no unit at all.

He didn't even have equipment to cross the Suez Canal. There was a Royal Navy base at Alexandria. Cairo is a major city. He couldn't take any of them.

When Rommel was stopped the first time at Alamein, he had 14 tanks working. By the second battle, he really had no chance doing a frontal attack on ridges with dug in infantry when he couldn't get the Brits to disperse their armor and be outflanked. By Monty's Battle in November, well the Germans called it "Battle Without Hope" because their wasn't any.

He was enthusiastic about Hitler and knew him enough that it helped him get promoted faster than he would have been. Later he soured on Hitler once he realized Hitler's decisions were going to lead Germany to defeat. He was forced to commit suicide mostly because the plotters approached him to play a large role post coup because he was famous, and although he didn't commit he also didn't tell anyone about the plotters.

I am less familiar with Yugoslavia's situation but they had not joined the allies when the Germans invaded. And if they did, what are the British going to do, invade there? How would they supply a force in Yugoslavia in 1941?

What Big 4 summits? We weren't involved and wouldn't have gotten involved. Our commies still loved Hitler b/c of Molotov-Von Ribbentrop. Germany could not have stayed mobilized until May, 1942 with no war going on. The Soviets were going to invade Germany in 1942 anyway. There's no way Stalin was going to let the status quo continue indefinitely. The whole point of M-VR was to enable Germany to take on Poland, and hence Britain/France which would presumably win (or at least severely weaken Germany). It was then or never.

The ladies responsible for placing the flowers obeyed the rules went home.

And then a wind blew all of the flowers onto the Confederate side.

After that both sides got flowers each year because people back then had sense enough to believe in God.

Germans put 11 inch turrets off Gneisnau in Norway, and the Soviets installed a turret on one of their shores off one of their wrecked pre WW1 battleships.

240 remember reading in a history book that at the first Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at Arlington people asked permission to place flowers, and after a lot of discussion and pushback from D.C. they said fine, flowers could be placed on the graves, but NONE could be placed on the graves of any confederates. The ladies responsible for placing the flowers obeyed the rules went home.

And then a wind blew all of the flowers onto the Confederate side.

After that both sides got flowers each year because people back then had sense enough to believe in God.

Confederate soldiers weren't reburied in Arlington until 1900, 35 years after the war, so I doubt the accuracy. It's a nice story though that fits into a lot of the sentiments after the ACW to put things aside.

I have no idea what the history book was, but I found a reference to it:

"He wrote many other poems and did not consider the poem for which he is remembered one of his best. He preferred "At Arlington", which he wrote after a visit to that cemetery. He saw a group of Confederate women turned away at gunpoint by Federal soldiers as they attempted to put flowers on the graves there. Later that night, the story goes, wind blew flowers from the Union graves onto the graves of the Confederate dead. "

Can't find a date for the poem but I'll admit I didn't look too hard.
