Forbes: Indiana Jones 5 Could Make a Mere $300 Million Worldwide, Less Than Its Production Budget

Less than the $322+ million it cost to make the film. And this ignores the $100+ million spent on marketing, whatever Harrison Ford's back-end is, etc.

Disney faces it's fourth theatrical misfire of 2023, after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny topped a mere $248 million in total global receipts from two weekends of theatrical release. This disastrous outcome means the film is likely destined for a franchise-worst $300+/- million worldwide gross.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny took $26.5 million in North America over its second weekend, bringing the domestic total to $121 million. International figures are roughly tracking even with stateside numbers, and at the current expected rate we'll see somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million for both domestic and foreign final tallies.

Unless Dial of Destiny can push its receipts high enough to top $333 million, it will fail to beat the box office of 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, despite having a budget at least ten times that of the earlier picture.

Unfortunately, I don't expect that to happen, as it appears the high end of probable outcomes for Dial of Destiny is somewhere around perhaps $320 million if it miraculously manages to slow its inevitable weekly slide despite the arrival of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One this Wednesday. So it looks like it's Indiana Jones who faces the impossible mission this week.

Bob Iger undermined Bob Chapek until his allies could convince the board to fire him.

But his appointment as CEO was supposed to last for only eighteen months.

He's driven Disney into the ground and now demands to remain CEO so he can turn Disney around using the magic that's bringing Disney such success lately.

And the board of directors -- all hand-picked Iger supporters -- just renewed his contract through 2026.

Did I say 2026? Valliant Renegade says this Disaster Artist has really been renewed... through 2031. His "advisory contract" -- which he used to act as a stealth CEO while Bob Chapek was nominally in charge -- has been extended through 2031 as well.

So he'll be CEO through 2026, and then Shadow CEO through 2031.

And it was in his position as Shadow CEO that he contradicted Chapek's decision to stay out of the transgender-indoctrination-in-school-fight with DeSantis, and forced Disney to take the full Groomer position.

So when he's an "advisor," he's actually still running the show.

Amusingly, when Chapek came in as CEO, Iger kept the CEO's office. He reasoned that it was his office when he was CEO, and he was still on Disney's payroll, so why shouldn't he keep his old CEO office?

Failing to crack $350 million will be a complete disaster. I suspect it will get there, but perhaps only barely. Mission: Impossible is going to skull-fuck it, though, and that started this week. It's going to be hard for it to climb up there, and the international box office isn't loving it...

My larger point is that she won't be fired, she'll choose to leave, and another major studio will scoop her up to give her control because of her great stream of successes.

It would entertain me greatly if she got WB, kicking out Zaslav, and then all the woke idiots who think the Book of Boba Fett is the greatest thing in cinema history can cheer as she brings that same golden touch to DC.

This is a shame for Disney. Iger was a huge improvement over his predecessor, Michael Eisner. He bought Pixar to revive the fading animation area (over Eisner's reticence to do so), and he bought Lucasfilm to bolster the film and amusement park sector. Both moves made sense at the time and DIS was able to outperform the market spectacularly because of it.

His time had passed, however. He should have walked away completely the first time.

That's a bad way to look at it, too. Movie tickets have different inflation.

1984 ticket price average: $3.36
"Temple of Doom" domestic Box Office: $179,880,271
1984 tickets sold: 53,535,795

2022 (latest available) ticket price average: $10.53
"Dial of Destiny" domestic Box Office: $200,000,000 (optimistic est)
2023 tickets sold: 18,993,352

The reality will be worse, since 2023 is more expensive than 2022. But using that close substitute, the new movie sold only 35.4% as many tickets as "Temple of Doom."

I think their first campaigns were Poopourii and the squatty pottie. They also were involved with a few other ventures, one was a system that would censor prurient scenes and language for parents who would like to watch cable with their kids and not have to explain "new" words to them, and a comedy channel called Dry Bar where there is no blue content.
Then they did The Chosen, and they are branching out to films. This does not appear to be doctrinal mormonism, but they are very christian conservative.

There's only one little detail wrong about their hit piece: the author conflated the 2006 arrest of p3do-trafficker Earl Buchanan with the later Colombian op that is the basis of the SoF movie.
I guess it's hard to get one's facts all lined up when one is diligently focussed on snarking Ballard's religion.

That article claims Mel Gibson disavoed Ballard, when Gibson is out there promoting the movie and I believe he's working with Ballard to produce another film about that sordid subject called: Triple Take.

What's really funny about it is that if Disney had just released it 2018 when they acquired Fox, it wouldn't have mattered.

In 2018, we had a good economy and things were looking healthy and the left hadn't started openly gunning for everyone's kids at all times. This movie would have been a notable drama that critics liked and most people didn't even hear about. It might have broken even, and then that would have been the end of it.

By locking it in the vault with the rest of the Fox properties and refusing to release it until Chapek screwed up and sold it to Angel, the world changed enough to make it *extremely* relevant.

How many Spiderman movies alone in the last 20 years? At some point, we have to acknowledge that, like politics and government, it's not just the studios screwing the pooch. Look, the sappy love story movie still works after being redone a thousand times. The war movie, the action movie can be repeated over and over. Even cheezy ones like Fast N Furious make money.

The problem now is that they can't write even a copy of a winning movie that passes muster because they have a mission to force moviegoers to swallow their views. And if people don't go see it, they have no alternative but to give the customers a tongue-lashing over it.

Their other problem is that they are so bloated that they waste massive amounts of money producing these shows. There's nothing in there that costs 350 million. There is just waste and delays.

The movie studios are being run by finance departments that need to maximize profits, and if they can follow the trend, get the star, and open on the right weekend to get to $1 billion, they'd rather do that then invest in a series of films that could collectively get to $1 billion.

231 Indiana Jones and the Dropped Pill Organizer'

I've been sharing these with everyone at work after the immortal 'Indiana Jones And The Rearranged Grocery Store'.

Apropos of nothing, I had no idea until just now there were, in various guises and versions, of the Vickers-Armstrong Universal Carrier, 113,000 of them made. The most produced tracked military vehicle in history. It's astounding how few of them are left.

I suspect the vast majority of disney stock is owned by retirement and investment funds and just a small group of people control about 20% of the voting stock, enough to shove their agenda through. After all just a few short years ago owning disney stock was a lock and retirement/investment funds were buying it up like mad.

When studios lost ownership of theaters, the need for B-movies vanished. They were to fill out blocks of films that the theaters booked, or independent theaters had to buy to get anything, and the Paramount Accords ended that.

But, B-movies did do important things for fostering talent. That changed over to television for a while (both Peckinpah and Spielberg started in television).

315 When studios lost ownership of theaters, the need for B-movies vanished. They were to fill out blocks of films that the theaters booked, or independent theaters had to buy to get anything, and the Paramount Accords ended that.

But, B-movies did do important things for fostering talent. That changed over to television for a while (both Peckinpah and Spielberg started in television).

317 > I'd wager that ANY movie made in 1980 is better than any movie made today.

I've been watching the Star Trek original series episodes the last few days. Some of these episodes are so very very dumb.

A Piece of the Action for example. Every three seconds someone from the Enterprise gets captured by some gangster. At one point, Spock and Kirk receive assurances the gangster they're transporting to won't capture them. They go armed, and get immediately captured.

What's the big conclusion? Shatner whips out his best 30s gangster impression and tells everyone the Federation is now the big boss, and he's going to be back every year for his 40% cut. He "unifies" the planet's gangster bosses under this threat.

That's the big conclusion! This is supposed to be the brilliant solution to a planet undergoing constant gang warfare. They're all working for an off planet gangster boss.

This resolution solves nothing. They're still going to be constantly at war for control of the planet, with the understanding that they have to give up 40% to the Federation.

So dumb.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 13, 2023 05:01 PM

Dude...it's the LITERAL definition of "dated", as well as the figurative. I still love the movies, and the effects are "neat" but they sure as hell aren't seamless, and it's obviously fake, so to pretend that it ultimately doesn't take away from the film is silly.

I wouldn't want it "fixed" in the old movies (Lucas!!!), because it's part of the fun of watching those old movies, but I wouldn't want it in a serious, modern movie.

341 That Forbes "review" was breathtaking - basically, the author says that the reason why the movie bombed was because it was made too much for old guys.

Every review of that movie I have ever seen blasts it for being yet another Kathleen Kennedy woke safari, complete with the "Strong Female Character" that does everything better than any man possibly could, including in this case Harrison Ford.

It's precisely because this flick is alienating those "old guys" that explains why it is failing. I've seen some detached-from-reality interpretations of things, but that review deserves note.

It is a decent solution, it's common enough in states where there is one big boss (the king) that a weak or no king causes civil wars and fights over power while a strong king each middle tier boss does his own thing for fear that the big boss will rub him out.

It's a drek episode for sure, driven by the availability of pre made sets and costumes for the budget, but the politics of a strongman producing overall order among the lesser thugs is true thru all history.

But this was a special circumstance. A previous expedition to the planet left some books, including books on 1930s gangsters. The aliens copied the books and that's how the planet became such a mess in the first place. Kirk and Spock decide they have to meddle to fix the planet rather than just leaving because the Federation representatives are responsible.

So non-intervention doesn't explain the ending.

Which is the point. Remember the first Dungeons & Dragons movie...what was it, 23 years ago now? (Holy shit, I'm old.) Jeremy Irons left his teeth marks all over the scenery, and looked like he was the only person actually having fun in that flick. (See also Frank Langella in Masters of the Universe as Skeletor--which he himself said was one of his favorite roles!)

393 > It is a decent solution, it's common enough in states where there is one big boss (the king) that a weak or no king causes civil wars and fights over power while a strong king each middle tier boss does his own thing for fear that the big boss will rub him out.

But in this case, the king is the Federation, and he's an absent king. Kirk names one gangster as the big boss in his absence, but given the gangster ethos of the planet, he won't last long. Kirk has committed the Federation to returning yearly and the gangland kill and be killed wars will continue unabated in his absence.

what else are they going to do? Iain Banks would have identified the element of society that either prevented consolidation or funded splinters and made it kill itself. But that is a fantasy since it is probably impossible to guess things like that.

In a way a divided society is a better one for individual liberty because the feuding clans tend to limit expansion of each other and have to compete for "soldiers". Even if they form a syndicate, they cheat on each other.

Pretty, slender, badass brunette super agent dragging a bumbling white guy farmer around, saving him from multiple issues. She fights, shoots, knows everything, belittled him...and he takes it and is whipped. Towards the end of the bit I saw, he redeems himself once by noticing a plant on a windowsill in a photo is unusual, which is where some secret genetic code is stored. It ticked off every modern girl-boss trope I could imagine.

When they report back there will be a Fed consul coming back to be the big boss for real. The idea was that the boss' cut would be put back into the planet. That might have just been in the novelization, though.

They could always bring bearded Spock from the Mirror Mirror universe to teach them a lesson for real.

I'm pretty sure the "imitative race" idea came from Poul Andersen's Hoka series about a teddy bear race that is similarly imitative and are now all cowboys from westerns and each town is run by the town gambler and the sheriff is the most foolish dude around.
