Drunken Bear Style Cafe

sensojtemple.jpg
Sensoji Temple by @wytworks7

Bear seats himself at the pic-i-nic table.

Baby rhino looks for the perfect place to sleep.

It might look like a stuffed animal, but no, it's real. It's just lazy.

Baby chimp greets toddler humans.

Yeah I know, I wouldn't let my kids near a chimp, baby or not. But it all works out!

Sleepy pups.

Dogs playing ball at the beach.

Duck rolls a nat 20 on his Stealth check.

Baby elephant chases birds. Spoiler: He fails to catch them.

Don't you hate it when people take forever to cross a road?

Polar bear mother and cub.

Polar bear having a bath in the Arctic.

Bouncy dog.

Bouncy bull.

No shit, Sherlock.

When you create an explosion in a confined space (like a tunnel), that energy WILL go somewhere. It also finds the path of least resistance, so it will be ejected out the ends of the tunnel.

70 There was a female Black Bear on the ski resort I worked on the lifts at in the early 2000's that was friendly as all hell. I'd be up on a tower working, look down and she'd be rolling around below me. I'd climb down for lunch and she would walk away and wait. I usually brought dog food for her.

One year she came out of hibernation during the season and went to the dumpster at the Lodge. Cops got called, they bounced a few shotgun bean bags off her and the last time I ever saw her she was jumping up a cliff and gone into the forest.

I was so pissed. I was figuring on trying to get her back to her cave with my snowmobile and a 40lb bag of dog food, thinking if she got a full belly she would retreat back inside for the rest of the winter.

Reminds me of another great scene from Donnie Brasco. He's got a recorder taped to his leg and goes to a Japanese restaurant with a bunch of mob buddies. They insist he take his shoes off, and he comes up with a story about how his dad died in Iwo Jima and he cannot stand the idea of this Japanese ritual. Great fast thinking on his part.

Of course the Mob guys get mad at the restaurant owner who insists all shoes come off, haul him off to the restroom and introduce him to mister fist a few dozen times. Donnie has to join in or they'll get suspicious and kicks the crap out of the poor guy.

I don't think the Germans treated US POWs quite as horribly as the Japanese did, although I am not certain. My dad hit Omaha and then was in Berlin until 47, and didn't trust Germans one bit. But he loved schnitzel, sauerkraut and berliners so he certainly didn't hold their food against them.

While in Tokyo many years ago, I was at an authentic, neighborhood sushi boats ("kaiten sushi") restaurant, shoreside (along the conveyor belt, not at a table). Obviously they didn't kick me out, but I wanted some hot sake and the wait staff was plainly ignoring me despite not being crowded. I finally had to go "sumimasen ga, watashi wa hatskan o kudasai." (As best I recall my Japanese at the time.) I had been studying for a few years and while nowhere near conversationally fluent, I had perfectly cromulent restaurant Japanese. After that, the service was quite good. Even had a chat about Japanese counting systems with the cashier at the end.

One of them saw me coming over and quickly backed up into the koban. I spoke with the other in my functional Japanese and got the directions. He turned back to his partner and laughed. Some time after that I began going to Germany regularly and so swapped out German for Japanese. I used to tell people that German grammar was harder than Japanese. The only person who understood was a Belgian woman I met only a flight. She had studied both and completely agreed with me.

Fort Lawton in Seattle had German and Italian POWs. On occasion they would sneak into town for some R&R. This didn't go down well with the black GIs who couldn't do this. Of course this lead to a riot between the black GIs and the Italian POWs. And a lynching of an Italian POW which was blamed on the black Gis. My dad was a Marine on Guam in WW2. He wouldn't have a Japanese car but had no problem buying a VW bug.

193 There were more than 10,000 German POWs in South Carolina. Some Italian, too. Many came back and some of the modern German companies that do big business in SC are due to the POW connection. Bayer, BASF, BMW, etc.

1974 or so, a few months after we'd moved from Thailand to "the states" (inside the Beltway), my State Dept. employed/frugal father bought a Datsun something-or-other to commute into D.C. rather than taking the big Mercury. Made a lot of sense with gas lines and such. I don't ever remember that thing breaking down.

204 Fort Lawton in Seattle had German and Italian POWs. On occasion they would sneak into town for some R&R. This didn't go down well with the black GIs who couldn't do this. Of course this lead to a riot between the black GIs and the Italian POWs. And a lynching of an Italian POW which was blamed on the black Gis. Because sometimes when a Daddy loves his son very very much the kid accidentally leaves his stash at his Daddy's office and they have to evacuate the building and it turns into a whole big thing but you can't be like "relax my dudes it's just my kid's stash" because people are just like soooooo lame man you know and then by the time your kid gets his gear back it's been a minute.

German immigrants had a huge influence on the USA. When I go on my dirt road travels around the Western USA I often stop at rural cemeteries as that gives you a good bead on the history. Lots of Germans, some Scandinavians, and almost uniformly none to a few Italian names are on the headstones. In New Mexico that changes a bit.

214 Many years ago, I prosecuted charges against an elder European national serial auto thief. He stole only German cars to get revenge on the Nazis. How stealing cars from Americans fixed the Nazis I'm not real sure although he explained it for about 20 minutes in broken English (mostly German, I think) while exercising his right of allocution.

215 I have an uncle whose folded flag sits on a shelf in my living room who did the entire pacific theater as a Navy Corpsman. Iwo, Guam, Okinawa, survived the sinking of the USS Wasp (CV-7).

216 I got to know the Forst Meister (Forest Manager) at the Army's training center at Grafenwoehr, back in the late 70's. He was captured in Africa by the Americans and spent his POW time near Ft Sheridan in Chicago. He made a point of learning English and spent the last year of the war as a driver for a general.
He was a nice guy.
