THE MORNING RANT: Checking Out the Business Pages
For this morning’s Rant, let’s take a look at some of the interesting stories going on in the Business section of whatever constitutes “the paper” these days.
Hiring slowed but remained sturdy in June as U.S. employers added 209,000 jobs despite inflation, high interest rates and nagging recession fears. Still, that's the weakest showing since employers shed jobs in December 2020.The only problem is that those numbers released by the Labor Department are intentionally fraudulent. There is a 100% chance that they are going to be revised downward in upcoming months. In fact, included with the June jobs report was another huge negative revision to recent months’ employment figures.
The unemployment rate fell from 3.7% to 3.6%, the Labor Department said Friday.
Payroll gains for April and May were revised down by a total of 110,000, depicting somewhat weaker hiring in the spring than believed.The negative revision to April alone was 77,000 jobs. Let’s take a look at headlines from two months ago when April’s jobs report was released: April Hiring Gains Reflect a Still-Resilient US Job Market [AP – 5/05/2023]
America’s employers added a healthy 253,000 jobs in April, evidence of a labor market that still shows surprising resilience…With April’s jobs report retroactively adjusted down to 176,000 jobs, that “resilient” jobs report was overstated by 30%! At the Department of Labor, publishing disinformation isn’t a problem, it’s policy. Your government is lying to you. You know they’re lying to you. They know that you know they’re lying to you. Yet they continue to lie. And the credulous, obedient media continues to publish each new lie as if it’s the truth.
Because consumers live in the real world – not in the world of dishonest bureaucrats who produce falsified statistics – those consumers are having to tap into retirement savings at record levels. It’s ‘More Expensive to Live,’ and Workers Are Tapping 401ks for Help [NY Times – 5/27/2023]
More Americans are raiding their retirement accounts as the cost of living climbs, and experts predict that the number of workers drawing on their 401(k)s to pay for financial emergencies may increase due to a confluence of factors, like new provisions that make withdrawals easier and high inflation that is straining household budgets.Paying rent and buying food should not be “financial emergencies” that “strain household budgets.” There are so many more households that are struggling now than there were during the Trump administration, but a lot of people (including “polite Republicans”
determined that it was preferable to destroy the economy if that’s what it took to replace the mean tweeter in the White House with a “respectable” person like Joe Biden.
Omidyar, who is primarily holed up these days in New Zealand, has recently been sending word to the network of organizations that depend on his support that he is planning to scale back his political and philanthropic giving, perhaps dramatically. Without their largesse, these nonprofit and for-profit companies, each of which have received hundreds of millions of dollars from the Omidyars over the last decade or two, will possibly be forced to scramble to find alternate funding to remain operational. “The folks I have heard from in several of the orgs are worried, some freaked,” said one person close with leaders at multiple Omidyar groups.Are any of these worried and freaked folks former writers from The Weekly Standard and National Review, who received funding from Omidyar for their upstart NeverTrump webzines?
The fallout could be a major storyline over the next year.The whole journalistic gimmick of “conservatives who, with a heavy heart, have no choice but to advocate for the election of left-wing Democrats” has a short shelf life. After more than one election cycle it became pretty clear that they were not “principled conservatives” at all. Instead, they were revealed to be either politically flexible grifters, or partisans operating under a false political flag for the purpose of electing Democrats. Neither was a good look, but since these charlatans are now exposed and no longer have any political influence, why would Omidyar waste any more money on them? Omidyar is apparently inviting his benefactors to “collaborate” with new funders.
Describing the pivot as “a necessary step in our evolution,” the statement went on to say that “collaboration can take many forms” and that some Omidyar teams will indeed need to partner with new funders to continue their work.
NeverTrumpers became NeverRepublicans and now they may be getting cut off from their left-wing sugar daddy. Is that a “blessing of liberty?”
In an SEC filing Friday, the company said that on May 26, 2023, it removed “certain produced content” from its direct-to-consumer streaming services. As a result, Disney will record a $1.5 billion impairment charge in its fiscal third quarter financial statements “to adjust the carrying value of these content assets to fair value.”Based on everything Ace has been writing about the Mouse House, it sounds like this may be the first of many, much larger impairment charges. I am very eager to read Disney’s next 10-K.
Levi Strauss on Thursday reported a swing to a loss in the latest quarter amid a major drop in sales in the Americas region and wholesale revenue. The San Francisco-based jeans maker posted a net loss for the fiscal second quarter ended May 28 of $2 million, or 0 cents a share, compared with a profit of $50 million, or 12 cents a share, for the same period a year earlier.Sales were down globally, but most especially at home in America.
Levi Strauss reported a 22% drop in sales in its core market, the Americas region…We consumers have always had the power to punish corporations for their left-wing political activism, but we now have the motivation and communication to make it happen. Levi’s is joining Gillette (P&G), Anheuser Busch, and Target in learning the lesson that going woke can lead to a meaningful loss in revenue.
He’s taking a lead role in advancing bipartisan proposals that would penalize bank executives when their companies fail, make it harder for giant lenders to get bigger by acquiring other banks and rein in credit card fees. There are two possibilities: they're inaccurate because the data are wrong and it takes time to get better data, or they're inaccurate because they don't want to be accurate.

The entire jobs and unemployment data is bullshit. It’s all estimates based on sample data and shit. The unemployment rate is the biggest garbage metric out there since it measures people “in the labor force” looking for work. So someone who is on welfare their entire life and has never looked for a job is not unemployed by the government definition. It’s like how schools who have shitty math test scores improve those scores by no longer giving tests to certain people.

Speaking of statistical fabrications from the Department of Labor, it continues to release inflation figures that are comically understated. John Williams’ website (www.shadowstats.com) monitors flaws in government economic reporting and data. The chart below shows official inflation as reported by the US government (red line) versus inflation if calculated the same way it was calculated in 1980 (blue line.) The Department of Labor is reporting 4% inflation, when in actuality it exceeds 10%.

Companies are on the razor's edge, too. My company is not handing out raises this year that are going to match inflation. The average raise this cycle is going to be about 4%, but that's the average. Only the lowest performers or those in special circumstances will get zero, but only the highest performers will match or beat inflation. 90%+ of the workforce are going to be net losers this year.
Keep that up for two or three years and you start losing workforce, or losing productivity.

I rarely go grocery shopping. I hate doing it, my wife likes it (fucking weirdo right?). So I’m kind of out of touch with prices. On July 4 I went to the store to buy some items for a bbq. Bought some tomatoes, onions, frozen French fries, potato salad and root beer. It was almost $50. I was like wtf? This is for just the sides? I remember when an entire bbq meal including the beef was $30 and that was not that long ago.

Always the pessimist I have always known that all adminstartions always lie lie lie on inflation. Late 80's my $2000 AT machine was now going for $1000, then $500... That RAM was a $1000 alone... until today it is almost trivial in cost.

They're writing things off as fast as they can this year. Anything that isn't directly profitable that they can take accelerated depreciation on, they're doing it. They want huge impairments for the tax benefits because they are going to take a yuge and luxurious capital hit next year when they're forced to buy out Comcast's stake in Hulu. That will be, at the minimum, a $9 billion cost and I doubt Comcast is going to accept a large percentage of it in DIS stock.
They're rummaging through the sofa cushions for capital, and this is one of the ways they're doing it.

South America has had this model on display for about 2 centuries now, in many different permutations, but always the same result.

I've got another Land Rover beater (2004) with a winch that I love. Bought it at the same repo auction and had a head gasket repair done. This Range Rover sold for $110,000 back in 2011, so it's pretty loaded, but I think the steep depreciation is due to fear about issues like I have now. I have a private mechanic, so it's not too bad. If I had to go to a dealer for repairs it wouldn't be close to worth it.

I figured they'd eventually lose market share for no other reason than that the Boomers are now old and uncool. However, I didn't make the switch myself until I had 3 pairs in a row with abysmal quality.

Throwing timing chains it probably bent the valves so you are looking, at best, a near total teardown of the engine and new heads.
At worst, the valves may have punched through a cylindat and you are looking at a new crate engine (or find same model in junkyard wrecked before the timing chains went).
Had a Kia with ovehead cams slip its timing chain one notch, bent all intake valves on one bank. Tore it down all the way to the block under the oak tree and had to get rebuilt cylindar heads and timing chain kit. Seems to run fine now... A real AOP job, maybe more.

Based on observational experience in my locale, the job numbers are skewed due to so many people, especially service employees, holding multiple jobs. Many stores and restaurants won't put employees on full time, due to having to provide benefits, so they get 15-25 hours per week per employer. I have seen multiple people I recognize working at Walmart and also at a restaurant or dollar store on different days.

Yep. The thread count in a pair of Levi's is probably 10% of what Levi's were when we were teens. Bought a pair a couple of years ago and they literally fell apart within a year.

We can argue about this all day, but would you rather be stranded somewhere with a clogged carburetor or a dead EFI system. The carb I can pull off and repair or replace in very little time. An EFI system has dozens of things that can go wrong, and do. Likewise, a distributor and cap requires no computer, COPs or much of anything else.

EFI rarely goes wrong. Carbs will die if it gets too hot, too cold, too much altitude, too little altitude, or just dirt in the lines. My dad had 2 Chryslers in a row, one with the carb 318 and one with the EFI. The EFI started every time and never stranded us. The carb did repeatedly.

EFI rarely goes wrong. Carbs will die if it gets too hot, too cold, too much altitude, too little altitude, or just dirt in the lines. My dad had 2 Chryslers in a row, one with the carb 318 and one with the EFI. The EFI started every time and never stranded us. The carb did repeatedly.

Think back just 10 years ago - very few were ready then to admit that the situation was hopeless, that collapse was now inevitable, even though I'd argue that become true in November or 2008 (or maybe it was our response to 9/11 that pushed us over the edge.) BLS operates on revisions downward, more negative, under dem administrations, and more revisions upward under GOP ones. At least this is how the last 3 or 4 have worked out.
So, its partly political hatchet jobs on one hand. But the estimates that have always been used seem to be less accurate than before. The gig economy has created some holes they still haven't fixed.

Buck: Excellent post, but you missed the big con! Which was the ADP "jobs report," released just the day before the BLS report.
The ADP report screamed that the faaabulous bidenomic ickonomee had added a *staggering* 497,000 jobs in June, "blowing past" the consensus estimate of economists of either 209,000 or 220,000, depending on the Media liar one read.
That report grabbed EVERY headline in the Media, which positively *slobbered* over duh great biden/Democrat victory--over 2.5 times higher than the economists predicted, eh?
Then the very next day, when BLS trotted out their numbers (209,000), the biden White House bragged about that lower number, not the ADP headline number. Moreover, the BLS said 60,000 of those jobs were in government, which is a net drain on the economy!
I searched the Media for any attempt to explain this staggering difference between ADP and BLS. Not a word. Admittedly ADP has a far larger number of companies in their figures, but if both agencies are honest the difference should be on the order of 5% or so. Anyone have an idea?

In all fairness, the withdrawals from retirement accounts may stem more from the concept that such accounts are vulnerable to government confiscation. That money might be better spent reducing the monthly overhead.
