Beavering Away Cafe

Nusfjord, Norway by @88.optics

The Great Debate.

Blue whale having fun with some dolphins.

Lizard wants to snuggle with the dog.

Terrified shelter dog just hides her face in the corner, but is eventually coaxed out.

Rescuing a wolfdog puppy.

Donkey wants breakfast.

Elephant decides he wants breakfast, too.

Corgi puppy's gawn kick your butt!

Encounter with a couple of elephants in a bad mood.

Holding hands with a lion.

What a great job.

Are elephants too OP for the game?

Cat is fed up with your foolishness.

More scenes from Switzerland here.

I know I've linked that before, but I think this clip is longer, and shows the otter helping with two cones, not just one.

7 Sorry to intrude on a happy thread, but as you probably know, the Fifth Circuit stayed the injunction prohibiting government censorship (pending expedited oral arguments).

Here is the crazy thing: The fix was in!

Of the 25 judges on the court, 5 are Demofascist appointees and, somehow, the panel that issued the stay was 2 Democrats plus Greg Abbott's former General Counsel, so GOPe (probably).

Most estimates say there were close to 100,000,000 buffalo in North America before the white guys showed up. I just did a quick bing search and it said there are about 93 million cattle in the US.

We have a whole lot of room left for cow farts to even out from 200 years ago.

68 Those baby buffaloes are so darned cute!

We were at Teddy Roosevelt NP some years ago ( in ND) and we were driving along, minding our own business when we came upon a giant herd of buffaloes just standing in the middle of the road. So we stopped.

And we sat.

And there were no other cars, no rangers around, not nobody, not no how. After about 15 minutes my husband started to inch forward and I yelled at him to stop. The last thing I wanted was to anger those animals and have them charge our Suburban and hurt our kids.

This was in the early aughts, and at that time there was precisely zero cell service out there, so if something had happened to us we would have been there for probably hours until someone saw us. Presuming that the rangers do some sort of patrol.

Luckily, after a while they finally started to meander off. But that was a long agonizing wait.

My wife was going to a brain doctor for some issues a couple of years ago. We always asked for the first appointment because this guy was overbooked and would get behind because he was the best in the business in our area and had contracts with both local hospitals. One morning we had an 8 am appointment and the wife didn't get seen until almost 9.

Once we were done and paying the co pay I asked what emergency had prevented him from showing up for the appointment. The payment lady said....oh he wasn't at the hospital for an emergency he just shows up when he feels like it and today he was almost an hour late. I lost it and let everyone there know in an extremely loud voice what I thought about him and his disrespectful attitude towards his patients.

We never went back to him after that day.

No one should eat meat, it is a prestige that a modern society cannot afford. The only proper way for a modern, wealthy society is to live is to live like a 13th Century peasant, giving homage to the Headman of his hamlet, his Lord, his King and giving tithes as demanded lest they go to Hell for sacrilegious defiance of authority.
This is of course temporary, until the rest of the world catches up.

The evolutionary position is that traits stay stable when alterations of them cause deficits in reproduction or reduces the ability to thrive without increasing the ability to survive.
It is hard to say what jellyfish looked like a 100 million years ago since they don't seem to have fossilize, though the Burgess shale at 50 million or so didn't have jellyfish as such though they had weirder things. Like tunicates and archaic sea cucumbers.

It may be that wobbly free floating goo that tastes bad and eats prey that wanders into it's stinging tentacles can't use much modification to thrive and survive.

* two siblings, female orange tabby cats, one with a diminished front paw. The diminished flew 1st class to Houston, died later that year at 22 -- punkin former was named biscuit and she went in deep winter in MA
* chuckie, MA, sleek vertical jump, amazing marbled tabby, short mostly black and grey, and orange. This was someone's cat.

Dunno about bison but with yaks and Longhorns, the horns are part of their system to regulate their body temperatures. They aren't shed and it will kill the animal to remove them.

Because changes that allow some offspring to survive better and have offspring better give it an advantage that is passed on to their offspring.
The real argument is "why doesn't every offspring have a mutation?"
(The answer is, "because if the offspring have an asshole in the middle of their foreheads, they will only be suitable for politics and newscasting, and thus will screw their constituents and audience and so fail to have viable offspring of their own")

Posted by: polynikes. at July 14, 2023 08:43 PM (/WQyy)

there have been several colonizations of land, but only one by tetrapods. Sipunculids like spiders, mollusc like slugs and snails, insects and ray fishes.
They may have had adaptions for other things that could be leveraged on to allow them to go further on to land than other species and individuals. Jay Gould called it "Pre-adaption" and hated the term, I think they call it Ex-adaption now, which I hate - but no one seems to ask my opinion on these things - but for example, a float bladder that has rich blood vessels to allow the exchange O2 when gulping at the surface can both help a fish survive in stagnant, drying water holes, as well as survive dried up in the mud. It also could be a step towards a true lung and amphibianhood. Especially for species with stout oar-like fins with bones instead of just rays for stiffening.

177 Florida’s truck drivers’ strike fell short of expectations. Why?
“Not all of us can afford to abandon a day’s work; it would mean less money for our families,” says one trucker.
https://tinyurl.com/3mayau5n

The word got out on social media about the planned suspension of deliveries to and from the state on July 1. Many, including Latino truck drivers from different states, started sharing messages and videos, threatening to boycott Florida in response to the new immigration law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

But when the day arrived, the boycott didn’t materialize.

Alix Miller, president and CEO of the Florida Trucking Association, said in an email to the Tampa Bay Times that she doesn’t have any information on the subject.
Arturo Dominguez, a freelance reporter and one of those who have closely followed the truckers’ protest on social media, said that while they can agree that the boycott may not have had the economic impact truckers had hoped for, it was successful in bringing awareness to a national audience.

Puzzled, we stopped, backed up several car lengths, and at that moment 12 to 16 adult elephants thundered across at a gallop.
Had we not stopped and had we not backed up then we could have been interred all in one two-dimensional matchbox.

Snap Quiz: Elephant grass is named thusly because (a) elephant dinner; (b) portion size on the menu; (c) better sounding than green long things with sharp and serrated edges; (d) None of the above; (e) All of the above.

A biosphere has more than one niche?

Think about businesses and enterpreneurs: If there is a single controlling authority like GOSPLAN, then there are only one or two ideal solutions.
In a true market economy there are millions of business starts, many of which fail, and some become successful, because they hit the sweet spot in needs and supplies. The ones that are ideal survive, the rest get eaten or taken over.

Evolution is an-cap with Schumpeterian tendencies.

US 48-State June 2023 Climate Report

The contiguous U.S. average temperature during June was 69.0°F, 0.5°F above average, ranking in the middle third of the 129-year record.

Generally, temperatures were below average from California to the central Plains and across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Temperatures were above average from the Northwest to the northern Plains, as well as in the southern Plains and Florida Peninsula."

And the NOAA June 2023 Global Summary, written to terrify the LIVs, but not indicating all life on Earth will burn-up tomorrow:

The June global surface temperature was 1.89°F (1.05°C) above the 20th-century average of 59.9°F (15.5°C), making it the warmest June on record. This marked the first time a June temperature exceeded 1.8°F (1°C) above the long-term average. June 2023 was 0.23°F (0.13°C) warmer than the previous June record from 2020, but 0.52°F (0.29°C) cooler than the all-time highest monthly temperature anomaly on record (March 2016).

In my opinion, although I'm not Science like Dr. Fauci, is that guided evolution is the mechanism by which God creates us and all flora and fauna. Evolution hasn't stopped but it works so incredibly slowly that we can't see it. It works only when needed. That is, if an animal is well adapted to its environment and that environment does not change (as is apparently the case with sharks), no evolution is necessary, although, like athletes and capitalists, they are always trying to do better. Why is there so much diversity from a common ancestor? Because guided evolution and different species try different things. How are complex organs, such as eyes created? I've got to go with guided evolution.

A better idea than evolution, for sure. Although I chaff at the idea of even a God, putting a multi-generational plan in place for his ant farm. Mostly because being an ant sucks.

If you believe in free will ? Then how guided can it be ? Yet - this is not all random.

"Average" temperatures mean diddly-squat, when most thermometers are located where people are. And when some are located where waste heat from human activity is exhausted. And when temperature records are adjusted in order to make them conform to some nutball theory about Gerbil Worming.

240 Polynikes-I don't think evolution ever stops. It just moves too slowly for us to realize it.

Some things change faster than others. Shorter life cycles, or more susceptibility to mutation. Things with DNA generally have DNA repair mechanisms, viruses full of RNA just kind of go with the flow.

I'm pretty sure the argument here for the past few years has been "It is beneficial for a respiratory virus to spread easily and not kill its host, so Covid will become another version of the common cold since those are the mutations that are the 'best,' in the Darwinian sense." And that seems to have happened.

There's also "directed evolution," which is how we had a couple kinds of wolf 40,000 years ago and 1000 kinds of dog now. Take Darwin out of the picture and just intelligently design the dog you want. Need a retriever? Breed the ones that play fetch the best. Need a guard dog? Breed the biggest ones. Need one that won't think for itself? Breed the ones that vote for socialism.

You just outlined "negative feedback" - the idea that new innovations will be necessarily ground down, meeting opposite forces, until they find an equilibrium that is sustainable. Every engineered system you'll find in the modern world, that self-adjusts in a dependable way, works on negative feedback.

And you also just described Millennials, Modern Liberals, Bush Republicans, and a whole host of new actors. Folks who are pushing "positive feedback". Folks who pretty much want to turn it all up to 11.

I'm just saying, the theory of evolution generally involves a selection process by which through multiple generations, the successful life that thrives reproduces and the the unsuccessful dies off.

But the Scripture is pretty clearly in Romans 5 that through sin, death entered the world.

This means prior to A&E's fall in the garden, there was nothing that died.

249 Again not ruling anything out . My three Biggs problems are again 1. Why does evolution stop 2. The order in which such complex systems are developed 3. The number of different species evolving out of the same environment.

Again I agree the earth is 4 billion years old.
Posted by: polynikes. at July 14, 2023 09:08 PM (/WQ

Evolution probably does not stop, but there are some limits. Eohippus lasted about 20 million years, Mesohippus about 11 million years, these species were fairly stable until they went extinct but also with successors. Species are stable because to alter too much will a) make the animal less likely to have offspring or b) create a new species. However changes do occur. You probably have the ability as an adult to digest milk. It is the most common mutation, and is a type of evolution. My wife is Asian and can't digest milk without issues, she is not a mutant like me. When a change big enough to cause a new species occurs it is response to massive changes in ecology or transformational mutations, like evolving a single toed foot that allows for fast running and access to grasslands instead of forests and bogs

Posted by: Kindltot at July 14, 2023 09:45 PM (xhaym)

250 2) preadaption doesn't care, it is a solution to another problem that applies to a new situation. The ability to keep gills moist on drying mud was not to create a land dwelling animal, but it is absolutely essential for that evolution. It is not pushed, it flows like water, trying all options, and sometimes it works and sometimes the individual has poor or no offsprings
3) Mutations that lead to transformational change are not directed since there is no preconception to be fulfilled. All the options are tried, and if they are survivable, they survive. If they don't they don't. Why did Xenartha produce both Giant Sloths, aquatic sloths and armadillos? because you can't do all of the things, it is impossible. So some specialization is inevitable. Marine sloths were vegetarians like sea cows. Ground sloths may have eaten carrion, and armadillos live on bugs, slugs and dead cows. can't do it all

The thumb is not as important as the ability to see future options. Quite a number of hominins had thumbs and even the elbows required to throw. Only humans seem to be able to face "what if" and tell alternate and equally possible future stories out of it. "I could see it so clearly it was like it was real"
What is interesting is that only humans have schizophrenia too. It happens in humans about the same period that the greatest mathemeticians and physicists are at their most productive. I think that is involved.

Meh. I had to trust my Mom and Dad, back in the days I can still remember. And, get this, sometimes they really fucked up as I recall. They didn't have a plan. They did things, sometimes did not do things, and my ability to mitigate those things waxed and waned through the years.

My interactions aren't part of some great plan either. If that's all part of some "great plan" ? Then it's a shitty plan. Jews in 1930s Germany, I'm sure, also got lectured about "The Great Plan".

259 So the evolutionary theory that most of our land creatures came from the ocean is because it was beneficial but for others not beneficial?

2) you sprout lungs and walk out of the water to breathe on land

A key physical difference between humans (homo) and all other primates is the third metacarpal styloid process. It enables homo species to make and use tools much, much, much better than the primates without it. This homo physical trait first appears in the fossil record about 1.5 billion years ago.

I've heard that from a number of people.

Caviezel's message at the end implores people to see it in the theater did the exact reason people don't want to.

He posits, essentially, that if you want it to impact you permanently and try to wake the world up, you need to be immersed in it.

Death, spiritually, or death, physically? Christians aren't Animists; trees and squirrels don't have souls. If the first human being (with a God-granted soul) born from an almost-a-human (still an animal with no soul) figured out Sin before it died, then it still works, I think.

If God made me, I don't think it matters if he made me from mud in a day or from monkeys in a billion years. His Will was done.

Fortunately everyone was patient enough to let them do their thing and move completely on to the grass.

Yes. I can explicitly remember instances where I made decisions, not based upon what I should do, but rather upon what Mom and Dad would view what I did. So it's a small leap from that doubt to this idea that a "God" is completely to be trusted.

Frankly, you can sell me on a "God". But I don't trust it, just because it's in charge. No more than I trusted those who I was at their mercy. Even though those two were flesh and blood to me. They were out of their minds.
