Daily Tech News 6 July 2023

Top Story

  • Elon Musk really broke Twitter this time. (The Atlantic)
The social network has never seen chaos quite like this.
They literally know nothing, not even their own magazine. Say the words fail whale and they'll just blink stupidly at you like a myopic dugong.

  • You might think that if The Atlantic is reporting on a tech story, it must already be obsolete or irrelevant and you'd be 100% correct. (The Verge)

The requirement to log in to read tweets? Gone.

Daily limits on reading, posting, replying, liking? As far as I can tell, gone.

    Oh, and there's this:
Twitter's move comes a day before Meta launches its own text-based app called Threads. Interestingly, Threads also briefly allowed users to view posts on the web without logging in before pulling the links. It is likely that people will be able to see Threads posts without an account when the app officially launches.
So the news is that Twitter briefly disabled reading content without an account, and Threads briefly enabled it.

Tech News

  • Marmot is a distributed, eventually-consistent version of SQLite. (GitHub)

What happens when there's a race condition, you ask?

They have a very clever solution for that: They lose your data.

They do lose your data deterministically, but they still lose your data.

  • Reddit's subreddit r/programming is back.

    It's garbage.

  • We have left the cloud. (Hey)

They spent half a million dollars on hardware to save one and a half million per year on cloud services.

  • Bruce Power is planning to expand an existing site in Ontario into the world's largest nuclear reactor complex. (Financial Post)

    Swampies hardest hit.

  • French president Emmanuel Macron has been accused of authoritarianism after threatening to cut off social networks if mobs continue to burn, loot, and murder their way across the country. (The Guardian)

Destroy the city and your TikTok privileges are revoked.

I think there's a generation that needs a lesson in the meaning of authoritarianism.

  • Promises of the imminent arrival of AGI - artificial general intelligence, or real AI - are bullshit. (The Register)
Enter Yale School of Management economics professor Jason Abaluck, who in May took to Twitter to proclaim: "If you don't agree that AGI is coming soon, you need to explain why your views are more informed than expert AI researchers."
That would be, Jase, because the "expert AI researchers" are crack-addled retards:
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last month declared to an audience in India: "I grew up implicitly thinking that intelligence was this, like, really special human thing and kind of somewhat magical. And I now think that it's sort of a fundamental property of matter..."
Yes, you can tell that by all the rocks that have won the Nobel Prize.
Caswell Barry, professor of UCL's Cell and Developmental Biology department, works on uncovering the neural basis of memory. He says OpenAI made a big bet on an approach to AI that many in the field did not think would be fruitful.

While OpenAI might have surprised the industry and academia with the success of its approach, sooner or later it could run out of road without necessarily getting closer to AGI, he argued.

"OpenAI literally sucked in a large proportion of the readily accessible digital texts on the internet, you can't just like get 10 times more, because you've got to get it from somewhere. There are ways of finessing and getting smarter about how you use it, but actually, fundamentally, it's still missing some abilities. There're no solid indications that it can generate abstract concepts and manipulate them."
He's being very diplomatic there. We know that it can't generate abstract concepts.

And there's another interesting point there: We put the sum of all human knowledge into the most advanced computers on the planet and the result is a radical left-wing college sophomore with the self-awareness of a retarded potato.

  • A chronological list of Star Wars movies and TV shows. (Gizmodo)

Why am I linking to a dumb list that isn't even chronological (neither in order of release or internal chronology)?

Because it was generated by an AI, because it is indistinguishable from the usual drivel on these sites except that (a) it is spelled correctly and (b) it doesn't accuse you of racism, and because the idiots who regularly write said drivel don't want anyone to click on it because then they'll all get fired and end up living in a dumpster fighting with the rats over the daily supply of Starbucks' coffee grounds.

Which is a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Disclaimer: And I'll be rooting for the rats.

So, apparently, there is some delicious schadenfraude WRT the Sound of Freedom overtaking Indy at the box office, SOF was shot and in the can in 2018 with 21 C Fox, when Disney bought 21 C Fox, they shelved SOF, it took the producers a couple of years to buy the film back from Disney, but they did and now their film is beating Disney.

I come for the buffet but stay for observations like that. Having spent a lot of time with databases issues like race conditions or botched transactions warm my heart. Lose your data, that is double plus good.

15 Evening and morning to all the satellites in space! Flash! Let's go to . . . Twitter? Aw, Mom, do we hafta?

Just had a long, semi-coherent dream about applying to two separate jobs in the same day, with the handicap that my watch was set two hours later than the time zone. Programming jobs, apparently. The first at a small shop, two people, a man and a woman, where they wanted the new hire to learn C. The other was on the opposite side of the Interstate (wherever this was) in a shopping center along the service road, and I was afraid I was two hours late. Turned out the place was run by former co-workers of mine; I knew everybody. I was realizing why my watch was two hours fast when I woke up.

19 The kittens are doing well. Actually I think Stirling has reached the end of kittenhood. He does not seem to have the same desire to knead and nuzzle me when I first wake up; the times he has done it since Linda brought him back have seemed rather perfunctory, like the way you kiss the aunt you see only once every few months on the cheek. He still curls up with me in bed, but he's too busy galloping around with little Dagny.

27 Las Cruces we have about 6 months where you use little to no heat or AC, 3 months where you leave the heat on all the time and 3 months where you leave the AC on all the time. Right now we're in the middle of peak AC season with daily highs of between 100 and 105° which is a bit unusual. Normally they are about 10° less.

Dew point here is hovering around 70F. The "real feel" is all about humilarity (a certain she-redneck around here so referred to it as).

As my cousin, the re-tard (redneck for "retired") meteorologist type of fellow likes to stress, dew point is the best measure of said humilarity. When the dew point gets below 30F, into the mid 20Fs, it's "dry" in an absolute sense. When dew point gets in the mid to high 60Fs, it's "muggy" in an absolute sense.

In these conditions here, most of the work your A/C is doing is not keeping the temp below ambient, it's condensing all that humilarity out.

In very dry (in terms of dew point) climes, when the temp is high, you can cool it, by evaporating water into it (swamp cooler).

In conditions here, that will not work. You've got to get that humilarity out of ambient air.

Psychrometry. It's a bitch. And fucking complicated.

39 The cats also seem to have very little interest in their canned food. I'm using good quality brands like Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Tastefuls, and they liked it growing up. Stirling devoured and grew like a weed on the kitten blend. Now, they take only a mouthful when I first serve it, or sniff at it and walk away; and the stuff is still mostly there some hours later. They love their dry food, Iams and others. Them cans ain't cheap. Maybe I need to put the money into good-quality dry food, give them a little canned once a day for moisture, make sure they have their water fountain, and let it go.

The highest dew point ever recorded on this here Erf was 95F, at some damn place near the coast of the Persian Gulf. Given ambient temp, the "real feel" heat index was somewhere in the 170F range.

Highest official dew point recorded in the US was 88F some damn place. Supposedly, it hit 90 and 91F in LA, and FLorida, but that is not officially verified.

The human body cools primarily by evaporative cooling, 'vaportin' water known as sweat. When said dew point gets high enough, that don't work. A human would heat up in ambient, not cool down. When dew point gets in the 90F range, one is at that point.

The term "swamp cooler" is utterly alien to the natives here. You might as well be speaking Sanskrit. Or proper English for that matter.

In my limited experience in Denver and NM, a swamp cooler in dry conditions will get you about 20 F. cooler than outside. Of course, if it's 110 F. out there, 90 inside isn't so good. And you feel sticky all the time anyway.

Upper limit on survivable humilarity. Wet bulb temp of 95F. This is an upper limit. It may be as low as 87F for young, healthy humans.

At any rate, a young healthy human could not survive a wet bulb temp of 95F for more than 6 hours.

Now, this gets into some complicated thermodyanics and subset psychrometrics, but dry bulb, wet bulb, and dew point are not the same. Wet bulb will always be in between the two others, but if you know two, you know the other.

At any temp, with 100% RH, all three will be the same. Otherwise, dry bulb > wet bulb > dew point.

So, dew point of 95F, as measured near the Persian Gulf is not survivable for any normal human.

81 It's my opinion the AI people are aiming for a philosophy of there being no such thing as Life. I've seen a few treatises on this already, from some very highly-placed sources. It's an aim to convince people their existence, such as it is, isn't real but only a subjective perception; therefore whatever identity they've developed elsewhere, particularly electronically, can be assumed and the physical being discarded, because it's not Death if you've never been Alive.
Who knew the Internet, originally intended as a communications tool, would become a cosmology of (literal) self-annihilation as emphasized in Eastern Religions?

I could have 'backed it up' with either a screenshot or actually taking a picture with my phone, which was sitting right there. I at least would have been able to transcribe instead of having to rewrite it from memory.

EMH sock off (but I love Robert Picardo, my second favorite Star Trek character behind Elim Gark, DS9).

My re-tard cousin I mentioned above, recalls with fondness, his first tour of duty. My uncle, his Daddy, wanted him to go to collidge. He rebelled and joined the Air Force. Got assigned to weatherman duty, which became the love of his life.

His first assignment was in Alaska. He recalls going out on one hour intervals, in extreme cold, to take readings from some weather stations. He had to do the sling psychrometer thing to measure wet bulb temp in god-awful cold.

He talks about carrying a shotgun at certain times of year, in case a bear got hungry nearby.

"James Townes was sitting in his car when he heard gunshots, and immediately began driving around looking for his two children, 16 and 11, who were both at the block party. Townes, whose 18-year-old son was fatally shot two years ago..."

Go have fun with the same strangers who killed your 16 year old brother, 16 and 11 year old children of mine!

It's really tedious that I have to point this out to people who have never been taught real climate science in schools.

When you have a really hot summer in the northern hemisphere while at the same time you have a particularly cold winter in the southern hemisphere it means the Earth has tilted on its axis. It has nothing to do with the our energy use.

226 >> So what *is* the definition of a Blue Moon?

Seasonal. The Blue Moon is the 3rd full moon of a astronomical season with 4 full moons. See the Metonic cycle.

Normally, 12 full Moon per tropical year. But the mean synodic period of the Moon is 29.5 solar days. Thus, every so often a tropical year must have 24 full moons, as opposed to 12.

It's complicated, but this must be resolved in terms of astronomical seasons.

A "Blue Moon" is the 3rd full Moon of a tropical Season which has 4 Full Moons.

The Blue Moon confusion is due to an error that appeared in an issue of "Sky and Telescope" in the late 1940s. An amateur astronomer wrote an article about Blue Moons, and made a dumb mistake.

Every so often, a calendar year must have 13 Full Moons. A year is 12 months, so the 13th oddball must mean a month has two full Moons. Wrong.

The author knew better, he was simply trying to simplify things for a general audience. He fucked up. He corrected his error a few months later in a subsequent publication. But that went into obscurity.

255 I am in disbelief at MisHum's feel good story last night. In looking at those photos with the article, I can't believe that couple is 106 and 105. They look much younger than their years. By a lot! Good for them.

I see the Trannish Inquisition has been convened to harangue actors in Whorrywood who performed in roles "not of their gender" in years past.

Stanley Tucci is among the latest to be called to task for his gay role in "The Devil Wears Panda".

The simple addition of "So what? Tough nooggies." to one's vocabulary should suffice for an answer. Now, find the stones to utter it.

257 Right now humidity here is 98%, temp 71. In a couple of hours you won't be able to walk around outside without getting soaked with sweat. Instead of lasting 3 days, your Lume will expire in 3 minutes.

258 BTW, don't miss this on the Brooklyn Dayzzz shooting:

“It is an event that’s happened every single year and, most of the time, we are able to find out the date that it is occurring,” he said. “I can tell you, all of our social media analysts, the intel officer from the Southern – none of the officers we spoke to ever escalated anything that Brooklyn Day was happening” until a few hours before the party began.

If police had more time, Worley asserted, “we could have put a plan in effect, something like last year, if we had known it was coming.”

----

They knew it was happening. They admit they knew it was happening. They ignored it because they "didn't have more time" to enforce the law.

259 The puppet UN president would serve either WEF or China (is my guess) ... and as those two do now, the Liberty of The West would be the target. People must be controlled, and killed as necessary if they disobey.

To save the planet ... to save the people from the plagues ... but if they ever reached Total Control, it would just be raw totalitarian force that can't be questioned.

Someone mentioned an online meme where George Orwell is reading a book called 2023 ... he is shocked and saying something like WTF, or maybe OMG.

260 Good morning Pixy. I can’t get the old comments from July 4th to load, so if you answered my question at the end of that post, I haven’t been able to read it. Thank you

261 >They spent half a million dollars on hardware to save one and a half million per year on cloud services.

It's 37 signals. They lie. They're in the iconoclastic hype business, not the actually providing service business. The fact that they're using VMs and Docker and MSRK instead of a real container orchestrator is a good example. If their resource requirements are really that stable, then they could have cut their hosting bill by at least half by negotiating with AWS.

>Pixy has to stand on his head to be fully Microsoft Compliant

Microsoft had a distributed, eventually consistent, atomic database 23 years ago. It's called Active Directory. It's what CosmosDb is based on.

>Someone here also warned me about watching Sword Art Online War of the Underworld

There are no good isekai or high school anime. Period. There are no exceptions.

>Bruce Power is planning to

The word "planning" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. Trust me, the Canadian government will never allow any expansion of nuclear power.

262 Quote Pixy: "And there's another interesting point there: We put the sum of all human knowledge into the most advanced computers on the planet and the result is a radical left-wing college sophomore with the self-awareness of a retarded potato."

That's just the personality filters they put on it to make it stop saying things that annoyed radical left-wing sophomores with the self-awareness of retarded potatoes.

Jailbroken versions are a lot more interesting. They still have the self-awarness of an NPC raised on a diet of CNN, but they're way less dogmatic about it.

As near as I can tell, Pixy didn't answer your questions.
