Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Lefties Are Immigrating to Blue States While Real Americans Are Immigrating to Red States, and the Economic Center of the Country Moves Decidedly SouthwardThe AP complains about the country becoming more "polarized" due to population sorting. I just see it as easing the way for the National Divorce.Wow, I'm completely surprised that the AP chooses to focus entirely on the hardships and feelings of their fellow travelers on the Marxist left. We have both kinds of Americans represented in this article: Democrats and Former Republicans! ... When Americans move, politics is not typically the explicit reason. But the lifestyle choices they make place them in communities dominated by their preferred party. "Democrats want to live in places with artistic culture and craft breweries, and Republicans want to move to places where they can have a big yard," said Ryan Strickler, a political scientist at Colorado State University-Pueblo. But something may have changed as the country has become even more polarized. Businesses catering to conservatives fleeing blue states have sprouted, such as Blue Line Moving, which markets to families fleeing from blue states to Florida. In Texas, a "rainbow underground railroad" run by a Dallas realtor helps LGBTQ+ families flee the state's increased restrictions targeting that population. And on and on and on. The economically important sort of immigration involves where the producers are fleeing to, so that they are allowed to produce, and where the non-productive consumers are infesting, because the state will give them the most welfare. And that kind of sorting is making the south the economic heart of the country. Heart of US economy moves SOUTH: Six states in the sunbelt now contribute more to the national GDP than perennial powerhouse the Northeast after $100b 'wealth migration' during COVID Florida, Texas, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Tennessee are now outperforming the Washington-New-York-Boston corridor The switch took place during the pandemic and shows no signs of reversing Two-thirds of all job growth in the country is now concentrated in the Southeast, and it is home to 10 of the 15 fastest-growing cities By Alice Wright For Dailymail.Com Six of the fastest growing SunBelt states in the South now contribute more to the United States' national GDP than the Northeast for the first time. Can't say I'm surprised. I commented the other day that the most dysfunctional and least productive people are moving to be with other dysfunctional and unproductive people.
Meanwhile, creative, industrious, and productive folks who just want to get on with their lives are finding common cause with others who feel the same way. One group will prosper and grow. The other will stagnate and decline. If this keeps up for an entire generation, all of the wealth in this country will be vastly redistributed along very different state lines. Yes. People got a face-full of tyrannical leftist rule and decided they never want to live under leftist control again.
++++ Another part is that there were no barriers. Huge numbers of people were working from home anyway, and so could pull up stakes. As more businesses started with, "we may never return to the office" or "the future of work is location flexibility," a lot more people took the plunge. There were fairly unique conditions that primed the pump, and it wasn't entirely political (though without the political shit shows at home, a lot of those people wouldn't have left). Some of those people will regret their decisions - namely those with large structural debts that demand high salaries that are hard to achieve in the regions to which they've relocated where costs of living (and thus pay scales) are lower. But it's been a tremendous change and the target states (mainly in the South) are become engines of capital and employment generation now, which will cause continued growth barring a catastrophic policy fuckup (like, for example, an energy crisis that halts industrial development). Like I said, this is an epoch-making period. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 07, 2023 02:05 PM (t0OGg) 87

FWIW: Sometimes the drama in these 'news' articles is a little much. First: you don't need a 'rainbow Underground Railroad' to move. That right is enshrined in the constitution. Second - I live in a 'Los Angeles suburb' and I see plenty of American flags flying - sometimes right next door to houses with 'In this house...' signs. Nobody says 'boo'. We're all too busy working and living and raising families to worry about what the other guy thinks or says or does.... I think the writer of the article is just trying to gin up controversy and drama where there is none or giving overly dramatic self-absorbed people a forum..., Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan at July 07, 2023 02:16 PM (pOE3q) 158

Almost all of that comes from one source - Ralph spends his career working in New York, and paying Social Security and Medicare taxes in New York. When he retires, Ralph moves to Florida, and starts collecting Social Security and has Medicare pay his medical expenses in Florida. I guess that we could forbid people from moving after they retire, but the idea that New York is "subsidizing" Florida because Ralph chose to retire there is ludicrous. Because the way I look at it, the progress we’re making is good for all Americans, all of America." Wherever the need is most huh? Inner cities with abysmal school test scores? Nah. Six of the fastest growing states in the South now contribute more to the United States' national GDP than the Northeast for the first time.

I'd always assumed a big portion of that "subsidy" is current and former military member pay and benefits.
Not entirely one-way - Hawaii, California, and Washington have substantial amounts of military. Almost no one retires from a red state to a blue state, so the interstate Social Security and Medicare flows only one way. Posted by: Oregon! at July 07, 2023 02:32 PM (2tUFv) 251

As with all government facts and figures, they're wrong...
The Northeast has always benefitted from numbers that show a large GDP based on corporate income. A good portion is attributable to Delaware being the state a lot of large companies are registered in because of their tax laws. The vast majority of the actual income is generated across the country in the operational plants. Posted by: jwest at July 07, 2023 02:33 PM (VP9ao) 256
“Memphis is nice.” Absolutely. Well, if you like recurring blackouts, potholes every three feet, failed schools that function more like gladiator academies, carjackings, aggravated robberies, murders, aggravated assaults, racial tension, and rampant property crime. I lived there for about five years from 2016-2020 and I lived in Iraq for 14 months in 2006-2007. I’d rather go back to Iraq than Memphis.

The outer 'burbs are mostly OK, but getting crowded. Stay away from West Tennessee in general and far, far away from Memphis in particular. As things begin to accelerate and reinforce each other, yes...this. Economic center of gravity shifts. If there is a national divorce, how does the nation split up?
Rural America goes along as it always has, commies hole up in their city-states. Once commies realize that none of them know how to actually do anything they start staging raids into rural America to capture people who can do stuff. Rural America retaliates, liberates their people, and then isolates city-states. Commies starve and the national divorce goes into the history books as the failed second civil war. Re: National Divorce
This is what the Constitution was supposed to be for. The Bill of Rights is a list of rules that enable us to live right next door to our EX without conflict. No, you may NOT limit my religion, faith, or speech. No, you may NOT render me helpless to defend myself. No, no, no. You may not appropriate my children and teach them to leave my faith or culture. The moment that the tug of war over the children begins there is no living side by side. If the Federal Government and the Public schools are insisting that any child who says they are trans has to be affirmed, then States HAVE to pass laws outlawing (what is increasingly understood to be damaging and irreversible) medical interventions for children. If your 14 year old (because abortion) has the medical authority to go around parents, the State HAS to step in in favor of parental rights and authority. It's a mess, but the whole point of social justice is to force these ideologies via the State and end people's individual rights to make these decisions in their own homes for their own families. The switch began during the pandemic and is only gaining momentum, Bloomberg reported. What utter horseshit. This has been going on for at least 20 years or more, which is why Uhaul has been practically begging people to take trucks from Texas to CA since the early 2000s. Things have probably accelerated since the Wuhan Pangolin Pox, but the migration was already in motion. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at July 07, 2023 02:54 PM (n+4am) 391

89: "I've been to Florida many times, and while there are some nice aspects to it, I would not want to live there, really. Too hot in the summer, too many bugs, too many old people driving around with one turn signal on."
I moved to FL a bit over a year ago, and these were my primary worries. I shouldn't have. "Too hot in the summer" - which means around 3 or 4 months a year you really want to stay inside. Rest of the year is fine. Compare that to NJ/PA, where a good 6-7 months of the year you really want to stay inside. "Too many bugs" - I actually had worse bug issues in Pennsylvania, though I am in Central FL. If you move near the Everglades, that might be an entirely different scenario. "Too many old people driving around with one turn signal on." - Drivers really aren't any worse here than they were up north that I've found. Oh, and for any morons that have already moved to Florida, if your property insurance is too damn high, check out what it costs through AAA, I got better home insurance for about 2/3 the price through them. Everyone on NextDoor around here says the same. Posted by: Qwinn at July 07, 2023 03:23 PM (xu9tO) 429

Please note, vis a vis "polarization" - it is only considered "polarization" by the left/media when it is an issue that the left is losing/may lose. If it is a hotly contested issue that the left wins on 51/49% it is never considered or referred to as "polarized".
For instance, when a dem wins the WH by 2% of the vote - the "nation has spoken". It's not "the nation is polarized". When a republican wins by 2% of the vote - the stories are endless about how polarized the nation is. This is similar to the phenomenon of when a bill passes the house with only 3 republican votes it is considered a "bi partisan bill" by the left/media. When a bill passes the house with 3 dem votes it is a "party line vote" that shows how the republicans are misusing their majority to be mean to the minority. We know how this ends. We may not see it right away. But the blue models are failing, and net migration is favoring the red side. Eventually, the House will not be able to be won by the dems very often, and as these states get more red, attempts to secure the voting process will make it harder for the cheat. This ends badly for the left, just as it ended badly for the Soviets, and as it is ending for the Chinese. Commie leftist marxists can make trouble, and cause great harm, but they cannot survive long term.

Been a long-running discussion as to which states "give" more and which states "take" more. The redistribution of Soc Sec is one reason.
Another is military. Fort Benning (BENNING FOREVER, ME AND DAD BOTH GRAD OCS THERE) is a hugely expensive proposition, as are Bragg, etc. Not to mention the air bases. Not mentioned is that military retirees like to live near bases--cost of living usually low--and spend their money--which they "took"--in red areas around bases. Sort of like Soc Sec redistribution. But some of them get jobs...on base. Laundry, post engineer, various other items. Used to be chow was a military issue but now it's frequently locally contracted mess halls, or so I hear. So more money "given" to red states. Posted by: Richard Aubrey at July 08, 2023 03:51 PM (dSnnl) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0888 seconds. |
