The AP complains about the country becoming more "polarized" due to population sorting.

STAR, Idaho (AP) -- Once he and his wife, Jennifer, moved to a Boise suburb last year, Tim Kohl could finally express himself.
Kohl did what the couple never dared at their previous house outside Los Angeles -- the newly-retired Los Angeles police officer flew a U.S. flag and a Thin Blue Line banner representing law enforcement outside his house.
"We were scared to put it up," Jennifer Kohl acknowledged. But the Kohls knew they had moved to the right place when neighbors complimented him on the display.

Around the time the Kohls were house-hunting in Idaho, she and her partner found a place in Denver, where their LGBTQ+ pride flag flies above the banner in front of their house that proclaims "Abortion access is a community responsibility."
"One thing we have really found is a place to feel comfortable being ourselves," Dean said.

Wow, I'm completely surprised that the AP chooses to focus entirely on the hardships and feelings of their fellow travelers on the Marxist left.

The split has sent states careening to the political left or right, adopting diametrically opposed laws on some of the hottest issues of the day. In Idaho, abortion is illegal once a heartbeat can be detected in a fetus -- as early as five or six weeks -- and a new law passed this year makes it a crime to help a minor travel out of state to obtain one. In Colorado, state law prevents any restrictions on abortion. In Idaho, a new law prevents minors from accessing gender-affirming care, while Colorado allows youths to come from other states to access the procedures.
Federalism -- allowing each state to chart its own course within boundaries set by Congress and the Constitution -- is at the core of the U.S. system. It lets the states, in the words of former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, be "laboratories of democracy."
Now, some wonder whether that's driving Americans apart.
"Does that work as well in a time when we are so politically divided, or does it just become an accelerant for people who want to re-segregate?" asked Rob Witwer, a former Republican Colorado state lawmaker.

When Americans move, politics is not typically the explicit reason. But the lifestyle choices they make place them in communities dominated by their preferred party.

But something may have changed as the country has become even more polarized. Businesses catering to conservatives fleeing blue states have sprouted, such as Blue Line Moving, which markets to families fleeing from blue states to Florida. In Texas, a "rainbow underground railroad" run by a Dallas realtor helps LGBTQ+ families flee the state's increased restrictions targeting that population.

The economically important sort of immigration involves where the producers are fleeing to, so that they are allowed to produce, and where the non-productive consumers are infesting, because the state will give them the most welfare.

And that kind of sorting is making the south the economic heart of the country.

Another part is that there were no barriers. Huge numbers of people were working from home anyway, and so could pull up stakes. As more businesses started with, "we may never return to the office" or "the future of work is location flexibility," a lot more people took the plunge. There were fairly unique conditions that primed the pump, and it wasn't entirely political (though without the political shit shows at home, a lot of those people wouldn't have left).

Some of those people will regret their decisions - namely those with large structural debts that demand high salaries that are hard to achieve in the regions to which they've relocated where costs of living (and thus pay scales) are lower.

But it's been a tremendous change and the target states (mainly in the South) are become engines of capital and employment generation now, which will cause continued growth barring a catastrophic policy fuckup (like, for example, an energy crisis that halts industrial development).

Like I said, this is an epoch-making period.

Memphis is kind of a shitty old river city. And it is right on the Mississippi, and it is humid all the time. It must be awful there in the summer.
My sister and BiL live in Nashville. He grew up there, and has moved back to stay. A lot of the entertainment business is moving there, has already moved there. My Bil remarks on how much is has changed since he left (about 50 years ago). It will be interesting to see what it looks like in 10 years.

Second - I live in a 'Los Angeles suburb' and I see plenty of American flags flying - sometimes right next door to houses with 'In this house...' signs. Nobody says 'boo'. Stay away from West Tennessee in general and far, far away from Memphis in particular.
Be suspect if you're looking in the Gatlinburg/Sevierville area in East Tennessee: lots of liberal/hippy types, like a low-rent version of Asheville.

In the short run, you have a Northeast, West Coast, possibly a Midwest, and then everything else more likely in one bucket. Possible that Florida and Texas lead competing groups initially as well. Medium-run the big group is likely to have an easy time eating the Midwest, and long-run is likely to eat the Northeast and West Coast.

If your 14 year old (because abortion) has the medical authority to go around parents, the State HAS to step in in favor of parental rights and authority.

It's a mess, but the whole point of social justice is to force these ideologies via the State and end people's individual rights to make these decisions in their own homes for their own families.

The Soviet Union was composed of many countries with natural geographic boundaries. Russia + satellites as a single country, and most of those states are still satellites of one power or another today. The CONUS is not particularly well suited to long-run peaceful division.

That's a better example than most may realize - because what happened was that the National Government simply collapsed, and the various pieces reconstituted themselves into several successor states, with of course Russia being the most powerful.

That's about the only realistic option I see for something happening here. You don't have to fight about who pays Social Security, for example, if the body responsible for it simply collapses.

Another is military. Fort Benning (BENNING FOREVER, ME AND DAD BOTH GRAD OCS THERE) is a hugely expensive proposition, as are Bragg, etc. Not to mention the air bases.
Not mentioned is that military retirees like to live near bases--cost of living usually low--and spend their money--which they "took"--in red areas around bases. Sort of like Soc Sec redistribution. But some of them get jobs...on base. Laundry, post engineer, various other items. Used to be chow was a military issue but now it's frequently locally contracted mess halls, or so I hear. So more money "given" to red states.
