When my business partner from Australia was here in April we had some meetings down around VA and MD. We ended up having a free afternoon and he wanted to see the monuments in DC. This was just a random Thursday afternoon in April and the place was packed with tourists and lots and lots of school kids from all over judging by the buses they arrived in. Given what we are spoon fed by the media I was pleasantly surprised how many people where there taking in the sights, even the Jefferson Memorial. Okay, this is an effective painting. The mood is somber, the situation in the colonies is dark, time may be running out (that grandfather clock on the right). And one man is struggling to put it in perspective so that all can understand. The complete emphasis on Jefferson, the writer, and what he wrote points to what Pyle thought of him and his work. The hint of the shadow merging with the dark grandfather clock is, to me, another indication of one man's influence.
I've seen a number of Pyle's paintings and illustrations but hadn't seen this one. I also didn't know he taught Maxfield Parrish and, to some extent, NC Wyeth. You can see how he might have influenced today's premier historical artists like Kuntsler and Troiani. Off the wall comment. Reading by candle light is very different from electric lighting. In the right circumstances, and with the right material (think Hound of the Baskervilles), it can add to the experience. Partly atmosphere and partly because you can only see the writing forcing you to concentrate on the words. It's a different focus.

I don't think the founders actually gave much thought to what the future would hold. In my opinion they were mostly concerned with their "hear and now." And crafted documentation that they thought would give them some sort of validity as it pertained to the desire for self rule.
Their concepts have evolved over time, but what was originally written was fairly eloquent, but simple. TL;DR "leave us the fuck alone to govern ourselves or we'll curb stomp your limey heads." So did their understanding that the only way they could achieve their desired state was through independence. Many years and constant debate and rejected ideas. It's not like they all woke up in 1776 and said "Hey, maybe we should go to war with the most powerful country the world has ever known!". Jefferson was an idealist to the end, writing about the "thought" of why the Founders had accomplished. The pragmatists , like Franklin, who knew this was a short term affair, were already gone by TJ's end (1826). None would have been surprised by the war between the states and would have correctly noted the end of the first Republic at that juncture.

I can tell you Worcestershire and mesquite (not fruit wood, I know) clash quite hard and I don't recommend the 2 flavors at the same time. A family, all dressed in red, white and blue, with seven very small children put a parade on this morning for the immediate neighborhood. Seven children from 3 weeks to 7 years old in strollers, on bikes, pulled by wagon, all decorated with flags, ribbons, signs. Two sets of parents, one set of grandparents, carrying a CD player playing 'God Bless the USA' sung by Lee Greenwood and other appropriate music, and all of those little ones scurrying about.
