Supreme Court Rules That Biden Cannot Unilaterally Cancel Student Debt;
Also Rules That Colorado Cannot Force a Website Maker to Design Wedding Sites for Same Sex Couples

The low-paid producers at NBC "News" cry in unison as the realize they're going to have to pay back the loans for their Women's Studies degrees.

In the student debt case, the justices struck down Biden's long-delayed program, which would have allowed eligible borrowers to cancel up to $20,000 in debt and was estimated to cost more than $400 billion. The program has been blocked since the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary hold in October. About 43 million people were eligible to participate.

The Supreme Court anticipated being attacked (as usual) by the Democrats and their Regime Media comms office, so they snarkily cited no lesser authority than Nancy Pelosi for the proposition that canceling student debt requires an act of Congress.

Colorado once again put a Christian through the hell of endless state process, attempting to force her to violate her religious beliefs and render services for something she opposes on religious grounds (gay marriage).

The Supreme Court said "enough:"

The court also ruled in favor of the web designer, Lorie Smith, who opposes same-sex marriage on religious grounds. She sued the state of Colorado in 2016 saying she would accept customers planning opposite-sex weddings but reject requests made by same-sex couples wanting the same service. Smith argued that, as a creative professional, she has a free speech right to refuse to undertake work that conflicts with her views.

Will the Masterpiece Bakeshop owner finally be freed of trans tyranny thanks to this rulng?

Here is the system we have now...

If you don't want to sell something to NAZIs, or hell, conservatives...you don't have to.

If you don't want to sell something to gays, pedos, or any other member of the left...you do.

114 The student debt ruling was ultimately the correct legal decision.

However, I’d caution those crowing about baristas with $100,000 gender studies degrees to remember that every degree is prohibitively expensive now. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, professionals of all stripes have little recourse than to become debt slaves. Doubt me? Look at the average cost of an undergrad degree-heck, 1 semester tuition alone, forget incidentals. And a professional degree is another story altogether. It’s impossible to “work a part time job to pay for school” anymore. If you have a job that pays the necessary $40,000 a year you don’t need college.

If we want to break the power structure that rewards incompetent legacy admissions and punishes us lessers, we have to break the college system as it stands today. Gloating over professionals who weren’t from wealthy families that had no choice but to take on debt in order to provide you with the professional services you require is in bad taste.

I don't know about the Before Times, but the standard student loan repayment schedule when I was in school was a 15 year timeline. If you made your minimums each month, you're paid off at 15 years. If you graduate at 22, start repaying at 6 months after graduation, and then make the minimums, you're looking at 37-38 years old before you're repaid.

If you can't make the payment and go into forbearance or make another accommodation, the interest continues to recapitalize (not counting the COVID pause) and the principal will grow which can quickly add years to the repayment schedule.

Hitting 30 should be pretty hard, but hitting 20 isn't very difficult if forbearance is involved.

240 The Lorie Smith case is a no-brainer. I'm a free-lance writer, and the notion that I have to work for anyone who walks through the door - be they Nazis or Communists or Democrats (BIRM) - is grotesquely wrong. My conscience is mine, period, and my reasons are mine, period, and why I choose to accept one client and reject another is my prerogative, period. That Smith had to go all the way to the Supreme Court to find someone who agrees with this fundamental truth just shows how far down the road to tyranny we've traveled.

250 Gloating over professionals who weren’t from wealthy families that had no choice but to take on debt in order to provide you with the professional services you require is in bad taste.

No sympathy from me. I didn't sign the student loan contract, and I sure as hell don't need to have my earnings stolen from me to pay off something that is theirs.

This overcredentialization crap needs to stop. Most careers don't need a degree and almost all can be done through apprenticeships. The problems aren't colleges that forgot their mission and now teaching is a side-line to all of their Club Med hospitality features.

Also, paying off school debt, not only being a magnet for corruption and abuse, it also demeans doing what it takes to obtain a scholarship. Why excel at anything for a scholarship if Uncle Sugar can stick a gun to my head and force me to pay for someone else's worthless education?

Posted by: TheJamesMadison

As I understand public accommodation, its reach is limited, that enterprises may not discriminate on the basis of "race, color, religion, or national origin." The left is trying to nullify this by unilaterally and without legislation to expand it to whatever they want, currently the LGBTETC by eradicating religious liberty and implicitly the freedom of expression to not be compelled to adopt others speech. There is a natural tension between these two perspectives and this SCOTUS has scribed out an ever increasing bright line here. My take is the screeching here is the Left is mightily upset that this SCOTUS is stopping it from nullifying the US Constitution.

I read a review of the new season and the reviewer stated that they corrected an obvious failing which was that there was no gay sex so apparently the bard is going to get lucky and that some characters were going to get upgrades to their roles.
I started watching the first episode in the new season last night and they have pretty much sidelined Cavill's role in favor of the two female characters. They have actually made him mute! The main female character writes him letters and pins them on his door(heterosexual sex is apparently off the table) and a narrator reads them out loud but dCavill doesn't speak.
I gave up about half way through the episode.

Posted by: Montec at June 30, 2023 12:36 PM (PNCaq)

The minimum payments are often set below maintaining the interest payments in order to give students a chance to find employment and progress a bit. Most people assume that the payment is the payment and don't pay that much attention.

When I started paying loans after graduation a few years ago I constantly got offers to reduce those payments if I was in financial hardship. I always refused, but the offers were there and from the company servicing the loan, not weird third parties, so legit, right?

You just have to jump through a bunch of paperwork hoops, and navigate a federal bureaucracy that loses your records every five years or so with Congress changing the eligibility rules in the background.

Of course, that was also after she'd made enough payments to pay off the original principal, but not the recapitalized interest balance which managed to be about half again what the original principal was.

411 >>> 250 Gloating over professionals who weren't from wealthy families that had no choice but to take on debt in order to provide you with the professional services you require is in bad taste.

I agree completely. If the challenge is successful and comes with a powerful rebuke that guts the administrative state from effectively acting as an unelected 4th branch of the government, both Congress and the Executive branches will be compelled to enforce proper separation of powers. Congress will be forced to actually legislate and given that nature of Congress to spin in circles a lot of the Left's agenda stalls out. Such a ruling would also reign in the Execrative, Biden as a prime example, from acting as an ever expansive dictatorship. All this is a direct threat to the Leftist insurgency that is hell bent to nullify the Constitution and reinvent the nation as a socialist-Marxist state.

427 I'm pretty sure the guy who is going after Masterpiece is a troll. IIRC he kept asking until he got something they wouldn't do, then reported them to the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

Interestingly, although this decision touched on compelled speech, it depended more on the religious beliefs of the website designer. I don't know if it would have come out the same way if someone had objected on ethical or even practical grounds. I'm pretty sure Colorado will have no problem distinguishing it in cases where the defendant doesn't have a demonstrable history of religious belief.

429 I'm not hopeful for Chevron to be overruled. This decision was an opportunity to delineate the major questions doctrine and, although it got reference, this opinion depended more on a textual interpretation of the HEROES Act. I don't think the stomach is there on the Court to do more than nibble around the edges on the separation of powers issues. In other words, I think the Court can be persuaded that Congress could roll back the administrative state anytime it wanted, but it is fine with the situation as it is, so who is the Supreme Court to tell Congress it can't delegate? I think in egregious cases the Court will slap down a specific law (like the CFPB), but I don't think it's going to make a sweeping ruling that invalidates most of modern government.

President Biden knew his plan wouldn't survive a legal challenge. His plan gave the appearance of action, while accomplishing nothing.

This is an issue of grave importance to our country. As President, I will galvanize public support to pressure Congress to put down their partisan positions and legislate meaningful relief to the tens of millions of Americans who are drowning in student debt. #Kennedy24
