Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: No, the Bud Light Debacle Will Not Be a Business School Case Study; It Was Elite MBA Indoctrination Put Into Practice“I had this super clear mandate. It’s like we need to evolve and elevate this incredibly iconic brand. What does evolve and elevate mean? It means inclusivity… it means having a campaign that’s truly inclusive and feels lighter and brighter and different. And appeals to women and to men. And representation, isn’t it the heart of evolution? We had this hangover. I mean, Bud Light had been kind of a brand of fratty out of touch humor and it was really important that we had another approach.”The great Victor Davis Hanson had an article at American Greatness a few days ago, which included this indictment of the destruction being wrought in corporate America by executives who were maleducated in prominent MBA programs. By absorbing the MBA programs at the major universities, the Left ensures that the new corporate credentialed elite has never gotten its hands grubby or stained in the lower echelons of business, or worked its way up the long, grimy corporate ladder. Instead, unpolluted the new execs transition from their MBA courses in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in environmental, social, and governance to the activist corporate boardroom. No, MBA programs will not be teaching how Anheuser Busch’s woke executives sabotaged the nation’s number one beer, nor how AB turned its once loyal customers into angry former customers. Instead, you can expect that the “lessons” that will be taught at our elite business schools going forward will be that: • Bud Light was a brand with a problematic, non-diverse customer base. • Bud Light’s destiny was decline and obsolescence due to the demographic inevitability of America’s deplorables being replaced by a rainbow of diverse persxns. • Heinerscheid brilliantly and bravely tried to save the doomed brand, but it was just too late. • Heinerscheid was victimized by the patriarchy who blamed her for the unsuccessful effort to save their doomed brand. There have been conflicting reports in recent days about whether or not Blake and Heinerscheid were finally dismissed by AB, or whether they are still employed but “on leave.” None of that matters so long as CEO Brendan Whitworth is still in charge. He is directly responsible for a left-wing 30-something with an elitist education being put in charge of the Bud Light brand. If that wasn’t his vision, his chain of command wouldn’t be hiring people like her. She did exactly what she was hired to do, and now she is taking the fall for doing her job. Mr. Whitworth needs to resign in disgrace for the irreversible damage he has done to the Bud Light and Budweiser brands. Without even discussing regional brands that were once widely popular before suffering a sales implosion (such as Jax, Stroh’s, or Heileman’s) there were several prominent national beer brands that were once the equivalent of today’s largest brands. Falstaff was the 3rd largest brewer in the country in the mid-1960s, with over 5% national market share and 10 breweries scattered among several states. In fact, it was such brewing powerhouse that the state of Rhode Island tried to block its acquisition of Narragansett Brewing Company on antitrust grounds, in a case that reached the Supreme Court. When Falstaff started losing market share in the 1970s, it fell apart rapidly. Schlitz was the 2nd largest brewer in the country as recently as the mid-1970s. As I wrote about recently when comparing Bud Light’s situation to Schlitz’s brand suicide, its management made some calamitous decisions that alienated its customers, after which Schlitz went into a death spiral. Pabst was a major national brand that sold over 18 million barrels of beer in 1977. It went into a tailspin that it could never pull out of, and its annual sales dropped to less than 1 million barrels by the year 2000. Anheuser Busch survived for decades as the nation’s largest brewer while most of its competitors perished, often as the result of awful management decisions. Brendan Whitworth has finally done what none of Budweiser’s competitors could ever do…he knocked his own company out of the top spot. Well done, Mr. Whitworth, your success is a tribute to your Harvard MBA. [buck.throckmorton at protonmail dot com]Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The push for diversity at our large corporations is putting AWFL women onto boards and into the C-suite. They benefit more than Blacks, because of numbers. It's at the expense of white men.
Large companies are also tying senior bonuses to meeting ESG goals, not making money. That's at the expense of all of us. Posted by: Ignoramus at June 30, 2023 11:03 AM (RqMSv) 11
The actions that destroyed Bud Light were the actual implementation of what is being taught at our most prestigious business schools. The Anheuser Busch executives who destroyed Bud Light and caused immense financial damage to the company are all graduates of elite MBA programs.
++++ Yes, but the *next* generation of elite programs might get to that position by paying attention to the abject failures and destruction wrought by the prior generation of elite programs. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 30, 2023 11:03 AM (t0OGg) 12

Companies used to exist to make money, which we're now told is a bad thing. But what "making money" really means is that you found an efficient way to meet people's needs. When you do you create value and wealth, which is the true foundation for progress.
Too many companies now ignore meeting people's needs. Disney is an obvious example, but it's becoming rife, as this thread shows. Posted by: Ignoramus at June 30, 2023 11:05 AM (RqMSv) 18

If they have any fiduciary duties this is illegal. SCOTUS will have to weigh in. Prior caselaw seems to req Blacrock to have some Fiduciary duty to someone. time to expand the SC to 15. Biden and the Democratic Senate need to jam it through 13 would have precedent, there were 9 USSC justices because of 9 disctricts in the 1800s now there are 13 districts and we should have 13 justices
I LOVE my POTUS but disappointed to hear him repeat himself a couple times last night that he was not going to expand. Anxious to hear more from him as to why!?!?! We have a Supreme KKKourt! Elections are coming.. The answer is MORE DEMOCRATS. I don’t think we have the numbers to expand the court. Fighting that battle in the run up to 2024, in light of what Joe has said, will only divide Democrats. Sadly Biden is against expansion. We will have to wait for President Whitmer in 2029. By the way, the damage done by Brendan Whitworth and his merry band of toxic MBAs cannot be reversed. There has never been a mass-market beer brand that gave up market share, only to regain it later.
++++ Bud Light's declines are permanent. It takes 30-60 days to change a habit. We're well past that threshold. Even when the root cause of this problem fades from memory, the changed habits will remain. This will feed into reduced shelf and cooler space in stores, which will help reinforce the trend. Contract renewals for sponsorships and exclusivity deals will get harder to negotiate and they will start losing some of them. Bud Light won't vanish, I don't think, and I don't think ABI is going to go bankrupt over this. A mark of the sheer incompetence of the "Biden" administration is that they apparently didn't have a pre-written press release to cover this eventuality. I had this super clear mandate. I mean, Bud Light had been kind of a brand of fratty out of touch humor and it was really important that we had another approach.

As articulated in this Court, respondents’ claim and theory of standing are twofold: First, because the HEROES Act does not sub-stantively authorize the Plan, the Secretary was obligated to followtypical negotiated-rulemaking and notice-and-comment requirements.Second, if the Secretary had observed those procedures, respondents might have used those opportunities to convince him not only that pro-ceeding under the HEROES Act is unlawful, but also that he should instead adopt a different loan-forgiveness program under the HigherEducation Act of 1965 (HEA), and to make that program more gener-ous to respondents than the Plan. Whatever you do in the name of Progressive Ideals can never ever be undone without punishment. Now the core problem there is the open collusion and cartelization of the investment banks. That is illegal and those companies should be mercilessness fined and broken up over their blatant violation of antitrust law. They, of course, will not be. The state-level actions from places like Texas, Florida, West Virginia and Oklahoma are an important front in this war, too, since they can force change extralegally, and least at some of these firms. college is only for rich white kids. Yhen you can open a business and discriminate against anyone you want! Debt forgiveness that helps rich people is okay. Debt forgiveness that might prevent rich people from exploiting poor people is bad. GOP law. Unreal! Biden should put a rule in place that student loan repayments should be 0.01% of a student’s income every ten years for 10,000 years. Make payments $5 a month. Why have all the forward facing Pride Month celebrations kind of faded into the background. Businesses are risk averse, especially the larger they get. A new risk has been introduced, and they are processing what it means to their fortunes. We've been focusing on INBev, but Target is in real trouble probably forcing a reorganization. They managed to piss off one of the most progressive customer bases out there. Kohl's who was in bad shape to start, moved their tranny stuff to hidden corners or totally out of the stores, but it is not going to be enough to save them bankruptcy, and unlike Target, they probably won't survive the process. They are watching. No one wants to be the next one. Posted by: Black JEM at June 30, 2023 11:57 AM (UVyKP) 370

Kagan is the smartest of them, but I would never expect her to turn conservative at any point. She's just going to weakly shake her head at the idiocy of her only compatriots on the court while signing off on opinions with weak reasoning because the only other option is to weaken those dissents with concurring dissents that make the actual dissents look idiotic, or vote against her own opinions.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, perfectly captured in the frame by William Wyler at June 30, 2023 11:55 AM (LvTSG) == She is also the most overtly political of the bunch having served in a democrat administration I believe. There was never any growth for her. The three witches are perhaps the least competent and qualified SCOTUS members in court history. As such, I am guessing they aren't that influential. Kagan probably can work on Robert's and perhaps Kavanaugh or Barrett. The recent voting rights cases perhaps show this. But otherwise, I doubt much. She also is about as healthy as the wise Latina. I've been brewing since the day after it became legal.
As you mess around through the various beer styles, you find out that making extremely light lager is a very difficult thing to do. Any little mistake gets amplified (unlike stout, which pleasantly hides a host of sins), and it goes skunk after it's bottled pretty easily too. Trying to make your own ultra lite quickly convinces you to stop making fun of the volume producers. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at June 30, 2023 12:25 PM (4PZHB) 410
So remember Ham's Stroh's. The thing is you get comfortable with a beer, you tend to drink it. But if something happens to make you uncomfortable, you can try something else, and pretty quickly find something else you like. And the thing is its really really easy to make and make well, and at scale its cheap, after you pay off the investment in materials manufacturing and distribution infrastructure. But if you piss off you customers, all the infrastructure and overhead can kick your ass good. They did a stupid stupid thing. They did it thinking it was smart. They got those ideas from MBA school and elite circles. THis is 100% right. They still think they are right. They wrong because customer service does not mean customer cultural re-education. Its fcuking clown world and its just getting started.

you find out that making extremely light lager is a very difficult thing to do.
== Well, honestly I never had any trouble with lagers, although I did tend to stick to heavier richer styles that I couldn't just go to the store and buy (really high alcohol content ales of various reddish to v. dark hues). You can get a banana like flavor in lighter ales which happens if you don't have a good yeast or there is a problem with the pitch temp, or you don't let it outgas enough, or let it sit on the gunk too long. And if the place were you ferment is a bit warmish you will get more of those fruity esters. Keep it below 70 F in the room and you'll do a lot better. So I guess, now that I typed it out, I agree with you, there is less leeway for error with a light ale. Posted by: Beer is a funny market - very competative at June 30, 2023 12:39 PM (sh1GZ) 413
You can make your own beer, it's not that difficult.
The only drawback is your kitchen may smell like a brewery. Some would call that a bonus. == Indeed. The biggest pain is probably bottling.
