Gorsuch on the Wide Latina
It is difficult to read the dissent and conclude we are looking at the same case. Much of it focuses on the evolution of public accommodations laws, post, at 7–13, and the strides gay Americans have made towards securing equal justice under law, post, at 14–17. And, no doubt, there is much to applaud here. But none of this answers the question we face today: Can a State force someone who provides her own expressive services to abandon her conscience and speak its preferred message instead? When the dissent finally gets around to that question—more than halfway into its opinion—it reimagines the facts of this case from top to bottom. I find this calming. The first rule of Lorenzo Scupoli's Spiritual Combat is to distrust our own strength. This is why I no longer imagine I know what is happening. I don't.
The second rule is to trust entire in God, who is the origin of love and goodness. This is what I am doing. We must then use our faculties properly, shunning sinful things and surrounding ourselves with holy images and beauty. Hate-watching the TV, arguing pointlessly about politics - these open ourselves to wrath and despair. Finally, we must pray frequently. Taken together this combination assures us the victory in the spiritual combat. I often refer to his book to remind me of these things because it is so easy to get distracted. We've passed the turnoff point. The majority of the ruling class is disconnected from reality, not in little ways like how marginal tax rates effect revenue, but in big ways, like whether people should be allowed to have opinions that differ from their own. - This is where I am as well. When you watch them tell you with clear voices and actions "you will no longer be allowed to own or drive vehicles that work because we don't want you to own or drive vehicles that work," the only thing left to do is wait for what happens next. This week we are going to visit my aunt and uncle who have the fabled "house on a lake in northern Michigan." My cousins (and their kids) will all be there, and it should be quite a crowd.
My kids are really enjoying getting to know extended family. I'm an only child, and my wife's brother died some years ago and her sister lives in Alaska, so extended family is what we've got. My grandkids are getting a kick out of it as well. Two weeks ago they met another branch and now Emma (who is 3), keeps talking about how she wants to see them again. There are so many opportunities for joy if we just stop and think about it. Old friends may be waiting for you call them and not even know it. It's weird how we are the most connected generation in human history and yet we sit alone staring at screens. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. The local police chief is mad, as if the politicians care. After a police chase through the city and into the suburbs, 2 teens crash and are arrested. By the time the patrolman finished up his report, both boys are out and stole another car and crashed it into a house. Both were 13 and 14. Whats the point of even stopping them. Last week a friend dropped in for our monthly-ish cocktail hour. Kind of a remarkable situation - a bunch of us all worked at the same place almost 25 years ago and we still get together and hang out.
Anyhow, he related the sad tale of how one of our mutual friends has gone somewhat around the bend over Trump and such, and he wondered if their friendship could be sustained. I said that if they get along on other topics like classic rock and sports (which they do) then just leave the politics out of it. He agreed, though it can be challenging at times. My solution is that when they do come up, I become visibly irritated and bored, limiting myself to noncommittal statements while checking my watch and/or phone. People get the picture. Even the most ardent liberal who wants to pick a fight falls silent in the face of "yeah, I don't know about that, but if it's what you say, fine, sure." *awkward silence* Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. ========================= Not to pick an internet fight here, but I disagree specifically with that qualitative statement, and also the negative sentiments about Sbux in general. Some people find Sbux overroast their coffee, which may be true, so ask for their blonde roast. I travel a lot, and Sbux can deliver on something covet as much as quality, and that's consistency. From airports to street corner doors, they maintain high standards. Also, their upper management booted all the pride crap, if that info is still current. I don't know their wokeness rating, but they seem to be sane(ish). Their baristas put up with a ton of shit, too, since their stores often have the only public restrooms around. In my working days I'd splurge for a coffee and bagel from Dunkin' Donuts, it was easy to find since my company shared the same office building as the DD corporate headquarters (until they bought the building and moved us on).
Now, it's Cumby's, Wa-Wa, those sort of suppliers. Although the $1 any size seems to have vanished. Posted by: From about that Time at July 01, 2023 10:27 AM (4780s) 202

Not to pick an internet fight here, but I disagree specifically with that qualitative statement, and also the negative sentiments about Sbux in general.
Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at July 01, 2023 10:13 AM (7Fj9P) === Fight! Fight! I rarely drink coffee out because I usually can't get out before I've had a cup of coffee. Also I like light cream in my coffee. Not half and half, light cream. When I gave up sugar in my coffee, light cream was the only substitute.
I buy Trader Joe's medium beans and Starbuck 's Cafe Verona or Sumatra(but only on sale which happens every couple of weeks). I mix the beans 1/2 and 1/2 into a canister. Grind just enough to make two perfect cups very morning. The only glitch in my ritual was when I couldn't get light cream during Covid. I would get half and half and mix it with heavy cream.
