The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Although I love a good PR story, this isn’t one of them. Circa Resort & Casino is cooperating with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in this investigation. We greatly appreciate their efforts to date and cannot comment further due to an ongoing investigation.”
Derek Stevens, CEO of Circa, said in a statement.

Quote II

“No one else in the establishment did anything. And so, once he saw his mother get severely hit, he took action,” community activist Ja’Mal Green.

Quote III

“There are many, many men who are interested in and better at sports than the best women,” Yenor said in a statement to Campus Reform. “This is why we have women's sports. Men being able to compete in women's sports will allow men to win in women's sports." Boise State professor Scott Yenor

US Coast Guard appears to have recovered debris with human remains from the Titan vessel.

Missing Titanic sub: Coast Guard says 'presumed human remains' found in debris field of Titan submersible

One week after the Titanic-bound Titan submersible imploded, the Coast Guard says “presumed human remains” were recovered “within the wreckage” of the vessel.

“The evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy,” Marine Board of Investigation Chairman Jason Neubaue said in a statement. “There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the TITAN and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again.”

If my former tax-exemptions are reading, this maybe cheaper than cremation and the Waste Management dumpster plan of mine.

You Can Bury Your Dead at Sea (Because It’s Free, Eco-Friendly, and Totally Legal)
There's no law that says you can't drop corpses into the ocean.

The American death industry is a racket. Everything is overpriced. The average coffin will cost between $2,000–$5,000, and according to some sources, the cost of a cremation averages between $4,000 and $7,000 per body—and that’s not including the memorial service. But you don’t have to settle for an overpriced burial or immolation. Instead, you can have your loved one buried at sea.

I’m serious. Over 2,500 people chose this funerary option in 2020 alone (mostly in Florida—go figure.) There are companies that offer full service sea burials of both intact bodies and cremains, but their prices seem fairly steep, and it’s nothing you can’t do yourself if you have access to a boat and a DIY spirit, because the process is totally legal to carry out yourself. All you need is a free permit and the wherewithal to get yourself and your dearly departed cargo three miles off the coast.

US Patent and Trademark Office notifies filers of years-long data leak

The federal government agency responsible for granting patents and trademarks has confirmed it inadvertently exposed about 61,000 filers’ private addresses in a years-long data spill.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) said in a notice sent to affected trademark applicants that their private domicile address — often their home address — inadvertently appeared in public records between February 2020 and March 2023.

U.S. law requires applicants to include their private address when submitting a trademark application in efforts to crack down on fraudulent trademark filings.

All good things must come to an end. National Geographic magazine to slim down substantially.

Pivots to Video: National Geographic Cuts Staff Writers
The company, which has 280 million Instagram followers, plans to focus more on social media and short-form content.

National Geographic is laying off all of its staff writers, according to reports from senior writers Douglas Main and Craig Welch posted on Twitter today (June 2. Staff were informed “a while ago,” according to Main, who worked at the publication for “a wonderful five years,” reporting on animals and wildlife.

“It’s been an honor and a joy,” Main said. “Very proud of the work that my colleagues and I have done here.”

Change is a constant. From a prosperous neighborhood and business to the challenge of a lifetime.

The Butchers Are in Trouble G. Esposito is gone, and now Staubitz is struggling.

“We were a bunch of idiots from the city,” says John McFadden Jr., pointing to a time-faded photograph mounted on the back wall at Staubitz Market, the city’s oldest butcher shop. It opened in 1917. The photograph was taken in 1987. Six men in a rubber raft, paddles in hand and wearing bright-orange wet suits, careen geekily through Class V rapids on the Lehigh River. McFadden Jr. points to a grimacing man in a blue beanie: “See, there’s Dad.” His father, John McFadden Sr., who took over the butcher shop in 1967, died last October. “It was freezing cold, and we thought the wet suits would keep us warm and dry,” recalls his son. At some point after the photo was taken, the elder McFadden toppled into the white water, caroming backward downriver while his son frantically yelled for him to turn around so as to better see any hazards approaching — boulders, downed branches, holes. “It was terrible,” McFadden Jr. says. Then he points to an adjacent photo, same setup, slightly calmer water. “But we went the next year too.”

There are other photos in the shop. Behind the counter, various large pictures of the butchers — from 1920, 1980, 1990, and 2007 — testify to the longevity of the institution. A wooden booth in the back corner is as old as the store itself. Once, a cashier sat inside, ringing up a steady stream of customers. Now, it’s mostly used by one of the shop’s six employees as a place to eat lunch in solitude. Although its history is long, the butcher shop’s future might be short. A few weeks ago, McFadden Jr. started a GoFundMe campaign titled, simply, “Save Staubitz Market.” He wrote, “I’m the son of John McFadden Sr., the former owner of Staubitz Market. Working side-by-side with my father since I was 11 years old, we have served the community and its families for almost 3 decades. Sadly, my father passed suddenly and unexpectedly leaving the state of the business in shambles.”

Drug smugglers are supposed to be unseen and quiet. Genius Award Winner.

The pilot of a private plane released packages of drugs over the Ardèche region, France, while being chased by a Rafale fighter jet on June 24, 2024.

The sequence of events began when the passenger plane coming from Germany into France was detected over the restricted airspace near the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in Alsace. Despite repeated warnings from the air operations command, the pilot chose not to respond and continued the flight.

Good friend of mine was a Bexar County, TX (San Antonio), Deputy Sheriff, and photographer at the County Morgue, where such a corpse attained bouyancy, bringing the cylinder head up for the ride. Yep, that's how much gas a decaying gut can produce.

Worse part though? The inflated corpse chose that moment on the autopsy table to "give up the ghost", if you will. Explosded, spewing hot rot juices all over my friend.

He wore a paper bunny-suit home, the kind you see CSI wearing so as to not contaminate a crime scene. That uniform of his went into the incinerator, as did the leather gunbelt, holster, shoes, socks, underwear, the works.

78 48 The senior center down the street from our house sponsors pickle ball. We listen to incessant thwownk noise from 8:00 A.M. until 9:30 P.M. Then these old geezers speed down the street, unable to see and wreak havoc in the neighborhood. The kids from the nearby university are far less noisy and reckless than the seniors.

Ignoring all the obvious balderdash in there, He told Moses to call Him "I Am" in Exodus, which isn't very plural.

Posted by: Tonypete at June 28, 2023 10:39 PM (qoGsy)

I'd check to see if you can get them, I'd think those would be removed in advance. If you go that route, you might have signed over the rights to the body and whatever's inside.

151 For a while, they made "non-handed" putters, that the player swung between his/her legs. Very accurate, they were. They were banned.

152 139 And, while we are on the subject - when I was given my late wife's ashes, they filled the container to the very tippy top.

So, one has to ask, what are the odds of my wife's body, when reduced to ashes, fitting the container exactly?

Or, did she not quite fill it and someone else was added in to complete the amount or, there was just a bit too much of her and it was saved for the next smaller person's container.

I tried not to think too much on the whole thing.

Before 1914, there was a general faith in the ability of science to remake the world, and in the innate goodness and perfectability of mankind. Without the chastening experiences of two world wars, would some of our current problems, like technocratic oppression and the trend toward one-world government, be even *worse* than they are now?

Just something I ponder occasionally.

Across the creek from us was what looked like a small stone shrine fashioned from flat rocks. We scrabbled across and it was indeed a small shrine and placed inside was a small ceramic box. Inside the box was a note and granular bone. The note showed that it was the cremated remains of a stillborn child 1986. We found it in 1998.

The Oregon State Hospital was rumored to tip the extra out so they could close the lid. Dad, who had old time connections there thought they flushed it, another guy I know with different connections thought they used it to sand the sidewalks or spread on the lawns and claimed the grounds smelled faintly like vanilla.

Went for Wing Night at the Elnora Hotel.

In that case, the Germans defeat France and then Russia. The Germans help the Austro-Hungarian Empire stomp the Balkan nations into Balkan-paste, during or immediately after the war against Russia. Then the Germans incorporate the Austro-Hungarian Empire into the German Empire. And the British are worried, very worried, wishing they had gotten in in 1914.

Most people would agree with you on the likelihood of a Franco-German war happening eventually, though not everyone. Besides France's reliance on a Russian alliance, the French Left in 1914 was actually interested in some kind of rapprochement with Germany (which was after all the birthplace of socialism as an organized political force), and might have actively pursued it had peace lasted a bit longer.

Then again, Alsace-Lorraine blah blah blah.

There is a lot of arguments and theorizing in the Austrian school about self organization in free societies. You are lucky, we are getting another smoke bomb from Canada. If anything, the media is underplaying it. The sky is legit scary and some are wearing masks for legit reasons.

As per languages, I have spent an hour a day for the last seven months learning French. It was a fantastic waste of time because I encounter the need to speak Spanish every day, and never French in this A.O.

The dirty little secret is the French don’t move here. And they teach their kids English so well in school now, you will likely not encounter a native French speaker here without at least passable English.

Quint,
We get choking wildfire smoke every summer. It's spooky scary. It tells the caveman part of your brain to flee. And when you don't, and continue to breather the smoke and have it sting your eyes and nostrils, well, it makes you crazy. Be careful. People get wonky during this kind of stuff. In 21020 I was under the plume of one of the big fires in the Cascades in Oregon, and the first day was the day without a sunrise, and the first week had me ready to start hunting people in the street out of frustration. The good news was it cooled the summer heat down, and the other good thing is that it taught me to read NOAA satellite shots and the projections from the chem and wind overlays at https://earth.nullschool.net/

Wildfires happen. Wind happens. There's a series of low pressure fronts working to push the smoke south and east towards you. Please look up Cliff Mass. he's a weather guy and had some excellent analysis of how and why the last smoke event happened.

Drink water. Flush your eyes. Use a neti pot to flush out your sinuses. I was blowing brown and orange snot for a week in 2020. It was horrible and scary. The whole region smelled like a campfire.

347 Some of the fires in Canada are the same ones that fumigated you last time, they are in a line across Central Quebec. There are ones further north, that are new and big.
I actually keep an eye on this sort of thing, I use the Nullschool site, the COsc band overlay under Chem to search for fires since they are a big emitter of that as well
The GOES site gives me the last couple hours of where the smoke is going and where it came from.

Generally the biggest driver of forest fires is neglect, the refusal to do thinning and commercial harvest of "wilderness areas" that cause massive fires due to build of of dead, dying wood and understory brush that acts as kindling and fuel to the forests and cause catastrophic wildfires.

Episode of Green Acres on MeTV tonight.

Mr. Douglass and the others were setting out 'maters. But it came a late frost, and they had to "pull 'em up" back in the house.

There was some concern about an accurate weather report. Some said it was going to hail, others said it was going to snow. Oliver calls the USDA crop weather forecasting service in Washington. They tell him it's going to be warm.

Mr. Kimball used the most accurate weather report he knows, which is the Poor Richard's Almanac. It's almost infallible, he said. Well, not almost. And not infallible. It is right every so often. Well, maybe not so often.

That’s what happens when every milkmaid can set herself up as a scripture scholar with the same level of authority as Herr Luther.

400 Anyway, recently there is a movement in North America towards Orthodox Christianity that is based on practices. I'm not okay with that. I'm really not. Recently there was a hit piece from Berkeley I really did not like, a book describing Christianity as 'Orthodox' and its regional support organizations as 'racist'.
I consider that nothing less that a Hit Piece but...

Posted by: LenNeal at June 29, 2023 02:17 AM (/BBNv)

401 Christianity in these very fraught areas isn't practice, as it's generally impossible for any practice to last long. It's belief. Christianity in these very violent areas has never tried to create a peaceful society but rather to mitigate the inevitable.
Hence, my Roman Centurion asking Jesus Christ to heal his servant.
"I know an authority when I meet one."
'Orthodox' doesn't try to create Utopia, it's effort is to mitigate human behavior. The Church is there to try to mitigate, not create. It is not a social movement.
Some may disagree.

Hank Kimball was one of the greatest and most unique comedic characters ever created. Green Acres was very good, and yes sophisticated. I'd guess you'd call "surreal" humor.

I disagree that overpriced is a fake word. It goes back to the 16th century, and there are nuances of meaning vs expensive.

Something can be expensive, but not overpriced. Overpriced means the price is more than it's worth.

It's also a good put down for self-important people, a synonym of overrated.

I had to look up Alvy Moore, (1921 - 1997) who played Hank Kimball. He was a Marine, and fought at Iowa Jima.

He admitted he had to us cue cards a lot for Hank's dialogue. The convoluted, insane rambling was hard to remember exactly.

Fred Ziffel, played by Hank Patterson was also a beloved character. At the time of Green Acres, Patterson was nearly deaf, couldn't hear his cues. So, they had someone lie on the floor with a little stick out of frame to tap him on the ankle when it was time to say his lines.

421
Well. I just learned something about "sirrah". I remember that from Shakespeare, and loved it, and liked the alliteration above, of course.

But this I did not know: It was actually used contemptuously. It was form of address, of "sir", to some *inferior*.

A translation would be "little man". As in, "Look, little man...."

Speaking of contemptuous put-downs, a good one I learned recently, a Frog word, is "chefaillon", somewhat similar to "le petit chef".

It means "small time boss", some times translated as "shit-house boss". The little boss of the shit-house. Some self important "sirrah" who thinks he's all that, but ain't shit.

IOW, someone who thinks he's hot snot on a silver platter, but ain't nuttin' but cold boogers on a paper plate.
