The teachers unions lobbied Rachel Walensky to let teachers give Zoom "classes" from vacation spots so that children could suffer the worst educational decline in history: math and reading scores for 13-year-olds hit lowest levels in decades.

The NYT rats out their teachers union co-conspirators:

The federal standardized test, known as NAEP, was given last fall, and focused on basic skills. The 13-year-olds scored an average of 256 out of 500 in reading, and 271 out of 500 in math, down from average scores of 260 in reading and 280 in math three years ago.

Achievement declined across lines of race, class and geography. But in math, especially, vulnerable children -- including Black, Native American and low-income students -- experienced bigger drops. ...

The last time math performance was this low for 13-year-olds was in 1990. In reading, 2004.

A Democrat witness swore to Congress that it's just not true that any male professional tennis player could beat Serena or Venus Williams -- why, men couldn't even score a point on them!

Riley Gaines, also testifying, then pointed out that both Serena and Venus Williams lost to the 203rd-ranked male tennis player. If I remember right, the man won every single game, except for one. So like 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

But other than that, the Democrat witness and trans cultist was 100% accurate in its sworn Congressional testimony.

David French: I almost joined a cult... for love.

Almost, cvck?

Does a Swingers Club count as a cult or is that just a social thing?

In the summer of 1993, I almost joined a cult. For love.

David French was born in December, 1969. In 1993, he was twenty four years old.

This isn't a high school kid joining a cult "for love." This is a full-grown man, graduated from college, and presumably now in law school.

And this emotional basket-case almost joins a cult for love.

The next time you feel the gales of David French's hurt feelings blowing across the internet, remember, he's admitting to you that he's an emotionally-damaged manbaby.

It was the same cult featured in the current most-watched show on Amazon Prime, a documentary series called "Shiny Happy People."

This is the cult that the Duggers were in. You know, they had that son that committed sex crimes.

I'm going to address the issue of abuse below, but I also want to focus on a different question: Why are otherwise good, solid people attracted to movements like Gothard's? How can they not see its controlling darkness?

My own story isn't uncommon. If you lived in evangelical America in the 1980s and 1990s, you'd often encounter men and women who were deeply influenced by Gothard. When I was 24 years old, I was engaged to a woman I'd been dating for two years. She and her family followed Gothard's teachings and attended events
sponsored by the Institute in Basic Life Principles. She told me that she couldn't marry a man who hadn't attended its introductory course, the Basic Seminar. Just as important, as it happened, her father said he would not allow his daughter to marry anyone who refused to attend the seminar.

So I said yes.

Pastor French uses his New York Times column to bash Christians, as usual, and then offers this incredible observation:

The Apostle Paul stated a universal human truth when he declared that "we see through a glass, darkly." We can know things only "in part." The Gothard movement and movements like it reject that sense of doubt. They purport to reveal all the deepest truths and answer all our most difficult questions. Yet no person possesses such wisdom. And if there is one lesson we should take from "Shiny Happy People," it's this: When people claim to personally light the path and clear away the darkness, you know they are leading you astray.

Pastor French sets himself up as an absolute Moral Authority and indisputable church elder every week.

The Holy Spirit just emailed me: "This guy, huh? Are you kiddin' me with this?"

Finally, morbidly obese satanic pervert Sam Smith "identifies as svelte" for purposes of jumping into the crowd, expecting to crowd surf.

The fact that he apparently identifies as a normal-weight man does not seem to bend physical reality to his will. Turn your sound up!

Clarification: This is allegedly Sam Smith, according to a guy I never heard of. I guess this could just be a fat rando who got up on the stage.

I gotta say I sure did. I am a teeny tiny bit sympathetic to French on this one, mostly because I want to see Gothard and his ilk buried in a used tire landfill that is about to spontaneously combust.

Tons of parenting books in the 90s were from these guys and my wife and I had no clue at the time. We didn't really go for them for some obvious reasons like THEY ADVOCATED SPANKING BABIES but we had plenty of acquaintances and even friends that were way into it.

Fast forward to today and we are friends with someone who was a Gothard intern that he tried unsuccessfully to groom.

I think French hates Gothard so much is because Gothard condemns sexual sin and French enjoys watching from his cuckshed his wife engaging in serial sexual sin.

French isn't even morally or ethically fit to utter Gothard's name. For that matter French isn't worthy to mention any Christian man's name.

So after losing the Williams' said they could still win to anyone ranked below 300. (Initially they said 200, and he was 203)

He responded that they just have to wait for the ranking update since he has not played very well recently and his ranking is probably well below 300 already.

I mostly agree with this. It has to be wide open.

It would be very easy to allow INDIVIDUALS to filter out any words they do not want to hear. Or block any accounts.

It starts with the platform controlling exposure - If I want to see any post about succulent Chinese meals, then I should be able to see all of them. If I want trending, or popular, or whatever. If I want to exclude ones that include words such as "penis," then I should be able to do that too. There is no reason for twitter to control any speech.

That's up to him, its his house. I don't like censorship, I don't like people being punished for free expression. Hurt feelings is not sufficient cause to stop them. But ACE has other troubles to concern himself with, like advertising and being canceled.

As far as I'm concerned racial slurs are no worse than any other sort of jackassery, its just being rude. We used to know that sticks and stones and all that, remember? We've given these words magical power and elevated them to quasi-religious words, forbidden sounds.

Yep. 96 hours of air under normal circumstances is used up pretty quick when half a dozen people are panicking. Plus that's just an estimate. I know from personal experience scuba diving that my wife uses less than half the air that I use for the same amount of time and physical expenditure. She could get two dives from a 40CF pony tank and still have air left when I needed two 80cf tanks to get those two same dives. We rarely dove deeper than 60 foot most of our dives were in the 20-30 foot range looking for conch shells.

You put two or three guys like me in there and the air is gone quick.

To be clear, I also pray for those people and their families. But reality is a cold mistress here.

They cannot transfer them from that submersible. If it's stuck and freed, it would still have to surface on its own. They cannot do anything but free it or try to raise it using another sub somehow. That whole process would take days assuming they could even find it using sonar in all that debris.

It's 13,000 feet. They can't hook a line to it.

Their odds of survival are below 5%.

Most commercial deep diving rigs have a transponder that can be released or is automatically released if there is some sort of emergency.

It floats to the surface and broadcasts a distress signal. I do not know if this particular sub was equipped with one but I would think any sane insurance company would mandate it's inclusion. It appears that either this sub did not have any basic emergency equipment like that or possibly that it failed for some reason.

286 Here's a little tennis story for you. When I was a sophomore in college I participated in an exhibition tennis match at a local club with Hana Mandlikova. At the time she was #3 in the world. Later on that year she made it to the very top of the women's rankings. My job was to play a set against her in front of the paying customers. At the time, I was a #4 player on a division 3 men's college team (which had a reputation for consistently good teams).

I beat her 6-2 (and one of those games I tanked purposefully to try and prolong the event). Needless to say, I got an ear full from her agent and publicist afterwards. Hana, on the other hand, was an absolute delight (and funny as hell).

My point is this. You would be very hard pressed to find any female pro tennis player who thinks they are even playing a similar game to male players. They know they would get crushed. Serena Williams has made that point on record a number of times...which the press and the zealots refuse to acknowledge.

294 Historic sequoias in California's Calaveras State Park may not survive prescribed fire

A prescribed fire by California State Parks and Cal Fire may have permanently damaged a pair of historic giant sequoias at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park near Arnold in the Sierra Nevada.
The two monarch giant sequoias — which rise well over 120 feet tall — are nicknamed “the Orphans” and located near an edge of the North Grove. They’re estimated to be between 500 to 1,000 years old and have become fixtures in the state park.
In a statement released earlier this month, State Parks said that it believes the historic sequoias were scorched in October 2022 after its crews followed guidance from fire ecology experts to reduce negative impacts from fire.

“It is unknown at this time if the impacted monarch giant sequoia will survive,” the statement said

This summer, California State Parks and Cal Fire are continuing with their plan to prescribe burn at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. A June 15 update from the Calaveras Big Trees Association, a nonprofit partner of the park, explained that crews are working to meet their goal to burn up to 155 acres of the park.

Even in the 70s that was why I preferred women's tennis, it was a more interesting game to watch since there were long rallies to get a point. Men were using so much power in the serve you got faults, double faults, no returns and one return followed by a winner a lot more often. I imagine the situation is worse with overlarge rackets and advanced materials.

Mister Scott is correct.

A submarine's interior pressure is not under the effect of the water column and attendant external pressures. Barring unusual events, such as venting a compressed air bottle into the interior spaces, the pressure inside the sub will be exactly the same as the surface pressure at the time they closed and sealed the hatch.

Note: On U.S. subs, the compressed air used to expel a torpedo from it's tube, once expanded, is vented back into the boat in order to prevent the sound of the bubbles in the water. Such could be detected by enemy sonar, and the sub more exactly pinpointed. The compressed air torpedo firing uses a very quiet piston system, and usually, the torpedo will advance with a rather low propeller RPM until some hundreds of yards away from the sub's actual position. THEN, the festivities really begin!

"Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the crescent-shaped opening measuring 60 centimetres (24 in) long created by the jammed interior trunk door. With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door."

Who knows how many hundreds of pounds of fish I caught with that thing, and it wasn't even name brand. It was some Ol Roy knockoff.
