Eff It All Friday Cafe

icelandvolcano.jpg
Fagradalsfjall volcano, Iceland
by @ozzophotography

Norwegian forest cat or "skorgkatt."

Rescuing a Indonesian cave-penguin.

Abused pit bull, so afraid of humans he can't even move in their presence, is given some TLC by rescuers.

Lightning bolt filmed in super-slow-motion, moving 50 yards at a time.

Huskies have a spirited debate about the relative merits of Trump and DeSantis.

My money don't jiggle-jiggle, it folds, i like to see you wiggle-wiggle.

Whee...!

Rambunctious goat.

Ah, Switzerland.

Iceland is cold and beautiful, like Megyn Kelly wearing a teddy made of Fruit Roll-Ups.

Note for those last two, there are multiple videos in each link. You have to scroll through them by the arrow on the side.

Stern Kriege.

Inspector 6, on the job.

A selfie at the top of Mount Everest. Pretty packed up there.

GOOOOOOOOALLL!

A day in the hellish life of a cat owner. Or "cat servant," more accurately.

A cute pet crow. >

"When he got out of the army after World War II, he began a career as a singer. However, knowing that audiences would never accept him if he used his real Japanese name of Goro Suzuki, he changed it to the Chinese-sounding Jack Soo and billed himself as "The Chinese Bing Crosby"."

47 Inspector 6 reminds me of Iraq.
Once we finished taking over the place, our Betters looked around and discovered not one single factory in the whole stinking country. Who needs factories with that much oil? Just buy what you need. That's no way to each the local ragheads how to do the 9to 5 thing and become viable workers in society.
So our Betters set out to fix that and build Iraq's first factory...a light bulb factory. Hired hundreds of young men to work there. Big success story! Except only one in ten bulbs would work and the US government bought every bulb produced.
Yeah.
Our Betters are dumbasses.

The current troublemaker, Stirling, sleeps next to me, but he doesn't bother me unless he hears me stir. Then he climbs over me and begins to nuzzle and knead my arm.

"Acerbic" was a good word for my late Arizona, whom I've always suspected had some Maine Coon in him. Certainly he looked a *lot* like one. That was part of how he got his name: He was large, sandy, and prickly like a cactus.

I know the Siberian breed best. Yes, I like to say "They are not ready for prime time," but little Tatiana the Wonder Siberian was very very clever. Chekov was no slouch, and little Dagny is almost as ingenious at causing trouble as Tatiana was.

My mother was western Canadian, and so I speak more like William Shatner or Michael J. Fox than I do like "Southern" or Noo Awlins dialect. In grammar school, to fit in, I learned to speak the local dialect (it is, or was, a lot like the classic "Brooklynese" from 1940s movies). That was among my peers. To adults, I spoke like a Canadian, I guess.

I could be completely wrong but IIRC when we had our scuba tanks filled it was at 3,000 PSI. 80 cubic feet at 3,000 psi gave me about 30-35 minutes at 60 feet which was at 1.76 atm or 25.93 psi. Of course the deeper you dove the greater the pressure. There was a formula that I have forgotten that calculates that stuff. We used to have a little plastic dive table card we could look at when we would scuba dive but we usually didn't carry it as we spent most of our dive time at 20 feet or shallower. You did not need to worry about that stuff at those depths.

Someone may have answered already, but for easy access to Koreatown, Downtown LA or Hollywood are "easiest". I can't recommend anywhere in Hollywood. Even the coolest hotels open onto some rough streets.

If you can swing it, stay at the JW Marriot at LA Live (downtown) and Uber to where you want to go in KTown. Any AirBnB in the new high rises by Live would also be relatively safe. It's a busy area.

Posted by: Grudge Harbor at June 23, 2023 08:57 PM (wBpKf)

189 I'm betting there's a lot more to the lawnmower / foot thing than they're letting on. Things like "don't wear flip flops" or "if you're on a steep incline, don't do stupid things while also barefoot and the grass is wet"

Although I do know someone who lost three toes as a kid cutting grass. Wear steel toe shoes is another good piece of advice.

difference between psi gage (psig) and psi absolute (psia) ... not really comparing the same thing, exactly. a typical pressure gauge will read zero at 1 atmosphere pressure.
1 atmosphere is 14.7 psia, basketball is 9 psig, or 23.7 psia

When I visited LA in 2014, I drove on Sunday down to SM, parked, and walked around a bit. Beautiful area it was. No idea if it's declined. I also drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu or a little beyond, past the entry to Pepperdine University, etc., then turned around. I wanted to stop for lunch on my way back -- but the traffic, even on Sunday, refused to let me make a left against the flow.

On the other hand, I got to see *two* Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadsters, the model they made from about 1958 to 1963. One black, one red, and not sitting in a parking lot but being *driven,* the way those cars were intended to be used. Considering how much those cars demand on the collector market, I wonder if some A-list star was behind the wheel of each.

There's a thread below.

In short, there seems to have been a falling out between the wagner leader and Russian defense secretary(?) that has been going on for awhile and went acute due to a friendly fire incident. Wagner leader apparently asked citizens to join him in removing the secretary and reportedly moved wagner in that direction. Moscow has apparently raised alarms and issued an arrest warrant for him for leading a mutiny, which he apparently has since denied on social media.

It looks like personal bullshit and not a move against Putin.

282 From ISW, which is in the tank for the Ukes:

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin appears to have launched an armed rebellion on June 23 to force a leadership change within the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) which is unlikely to succeed. Prigozhin amplified a video from a Wagner-affiliated Telegram channel on June 23 which reportedly shows the aftermath of a missile strike on a rear-area Wagner camp and accused the Russian MoD of conducting that strike. Prigozhin used the video to then justify his most explicit rhetorical escalation against the Russian MoD to date and a call for action against the Russian MoD. Prigozhin claimed that the Wagner Commanders’ Council made the decision to stop “the evil brought by the military leadership” who neglect and destroy the lives of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers. Prigozhin urged the Russian people not to resist, to remain calm, remain in their homes, and warned that Wagner will “deal” with those who destroyed Russian soldiers before returning to the frontlines in Ukraine after restoring justice for all.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 23, 2023 08:48 PM (omVj0)

Because it's 9 psi greater than the air around it. Most practical pressure measurements are relative to the surrounding air. Absolute pressure is a harder thing to measure.

Which means the guys at the GS-12 level are busting their asses to find out what is going on and then brief their GS-14 and 15 bosses, all of which realize the truth does not fit the Biden narrative. So briefings are being rewritten. Then the GS-15s will brief the SES level drones and tell them what they want to hear. This gets briefed to Blinken (after suitable reweites) who can't find Ukraine with a map, and then the media will "interpret" what the Administration tells us.
Sleep well.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at June 23, 2023 09:22 PM (KFhLj)

There is only one push-operated reel mower to buy, and that is the Clemson E-16 Junior. Very light, but also very stiff, which is crucial to keeping the blades properly adjusted. They haven't made them for 60 years or so, but used ones show up on auction sites from time to time. No shit, they really are the best of their type:
