The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The family is horrified at the fact that throughout this process, they’ve been kept in the dark by the prosecution,” Maurica Manyan family attorney Chelsea Lewis said.

Quote II

“We don’t need to be searching for viruses that may never interact with man. And it’s worse than that. They bring viruses that we may never interact with, they bring them back to the lab, but then they manipulate them by combining them with other viruses to create viruses that don’t exist in nature,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)

Quote III

Our troops want to be part of a winning organization. I was in the Gulf War, and I gotta say, it felt pretty awesome even though I basically ran a heavily armed carwash. But we knew we were the best, not because of officers mouthing endless clichés about “lethality” and “readiness” but because we knew what we could do. We need that winning attitude back. We need our military to earn once again the respect of the American people such that young Americans are ready to serve in adequate numbers. Kurt Schlichter

An issue brief published by the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) finds clear correlations between children raised in fatherless homes and developmental challenges such as anger problems, violent tendencies, and overall lower educational scores.

I might be "old fashioned". But my house works, even if it isn't Smart.

Earlier this month, Amazon locked a man out of his account, disrupting his extensive smart home system. The suspension was driven by a delivery driver who claimed the man used a racial slur through his automated doorbell system. The only problem is that the man captured the entire interaction on his security system — the communication to the worker was an automated greeting of, “Excuse me, can I help you?”

In a post to Medium, Brandon Jackson outlined how his smart home system was disrupted by a week-long lockout from his Amazon account.

35 re. Kurt Schlicter's column, one of the first things to do is reduce the OpTempo of the military. Currently units are on the same 1-2 deployment schedule as during the GWOT. And soldiers are getting burned out. Deployments are supposed to be 8 months but they're getting extended. And then it's come home and start training for the NEXT deployment.

36 Regarding the band behind the snow pic:

Saw them (for real) in high school, somewhere around '71-'72. Took a date, a girl from the Saturday morning high school-age league, so not in my high school. Whoever the lead singer was/is, Burton?, he was quite vulgar. Considering their songs on the radio, that was very much a surprise. At one point, the lead singer was twirling his flute, talking to the crowd, when he said something along the lines of 'girls like to play with my flute' while he twirled it so that it stuck out from his crotch. I was mortified. First (and last) date and all that.

They give their lives, we give them drag queens for their children at the base library; they live in substandard housing that was well maintained by post maintenance in the old days that was turned over to "private contractors" who can't even keep black mold and rats out of them, they are forced to be human guinea pigs for any and all crackpot "vaccines" (that includes spouses and children), they all receive receive substandard medical care from people who aren't Americans and aren't even educated to US medical standards. Stupid comment by yet another beltway asshole. The DOD knows why people join the military. They've tracked this since vietnam. Our leadership since Obama (PDT excluded) has slowly trashed he incentives for enlisting and openly mock the values and virtues of military service. So, a nanosecond before you're crushed into a beer-can sized gelatinous blob, you're Flash Roasted before the water hammer makes a car crusher look merciful, in comparison.

But, it's all over in a tenth of a second, or less. Once it happens. it's the dreading that it's going to happen that would be the real pain. When it does happen, yer dead before you even know it's happen-ING.

Posted by: JP at June 19, 2023 10:16 PM (tF/Gf)

We lived in on-base housing at Offutt (vastly superior as it was an AF base), and we still heard stories from those who lived in the off-base base housing (yes, you read that correctly) that was quite a bit older. We rarely were directly affected, except the one time that Pooky got called in the middle of the night Japan time. The housing company tried to chew him out for not mowing the lawn, and he pointed out that we had been gone for more than 30 days (and had informed them as such), and their threat to tell his commander that he hadn't mowed his lawn would only remind the commander that Pooky's unit needed to include our house on the lawn-mowing list. We didn't hear from them again on the issue.

Now, on top of the incompetence issue, you have to worry about typical leftist prejudice and arrogance of the average software weenie as to whether your smart home will operate as you paid for. He needs to sue. Negative feedback is required.

129 Evening Horde, thx MisHum. Turns out that the car crash in Minneapolis is an intersectional mess (pun intended). The five girls who were killed were Somalis who were coming home from a traditional henna treatment for a wedding. The guy who sped off the freeway and killed them was an African American named Thompson. His father was the member of the Minnesota assembly who led protests at a police officers house and neighborhood. The son was sentenced in 2020 to 8yrs in prison for badly injuring a pedestrian with a car. He was out early. White leftists really don't care about people of African origin killing each other.

I apologize for how that came out - I was born in '61, my father was in R.O.T.C. and when he graduated he began a twenty year career in the Army. He retired when I was 24 and then spent another twenty years as a bank Sr. Auditor. He died last year after a fall. He was the most upright man I will ever know, as an Officer he had great concern and compassion for the men he served with. The result is comical.
The truth is modern dishwashers use very little soap but a lot of baking soda. So if you run out of prepared treatments, fill the little pop up cup with baking soda, then add one drop (ONE DROP) of Dawn or other similar soap.
That will run just fine.

Well, Congresscritters pulling out a sidearm and shooting witnesses that piss them off, while popular in some quarters (depending on the witness), it's really not what I want in/from my Government.

I honestly feel at some point fairly soon there will be a preference cascade in Congress for impeachment. For Republicans, while Biden's impeachment is completely warranted, the 'laughing for no reason' follow-up is not much better. For Dems, impeaching Joey Choo-Choo would clear the decks for whomever the DNC deems to be the next candidate. And it won't be Kamalalaladingdong. She'll get her 'historic firsts', then get kicked to the curb in order to run someone viable.

230 Recalled this afternoon an excellent book, 'Blow All Ballast', Barrows.

"USS Squalus (SS-192), a diesel-electric submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and commissioned there on 1 March 1939, suffered a catastrophic valve failure during a test dive off the Isle of Shoals at 0740 on 23 May. Partially flooded, the submarine sank to the bottom and came to rest keel down in 40 fathoms (240 feet) of water."

There was at least one MOH awarded for the rescue effort.

All future U.S. dot-mil tactical aircraft, should be equipped with a man-rated R2-D2 type "pod" installation behind the cockpit. Or, just be two seaters, in general. But in this case, the GIB has no tactical or operational nor piloting duties, at all. Give him an altimeter and artificial horizon, just for entertainment.

But, that seat IS TO BE FILLED by a Senior Executive or Department Head of the defense contractor that made the plane.

Every plane, every mission. They can fly in "rotation", but someone from Lock-Mart, senior from a shop foreman, IS going to be on board during each and every live combat mission.

271 re" submarine at Titanic

When they had lost communications on a previous dive, well it is a bit more complicated and terrifying to learn the rest of the story.

The surface ship gives the sub its directions to the wreckage. There is nothing aboard the sub to find the sunken ship. So for over two hours that sub was lost underwater.

Failure to resurface after this loss of communications and about two hours in, means the submersible was close to the bottom and probably bad things have already happened.

Much better, no afib, but he has one hell of a bunch of purple bruises right where he wishes they were not. He went to the lake with the dogs today, and drove, and went out to dinner, so things are moving in the right direction.

There are always so much more things they just don't tell you about after a procedure....

But all appears to be right with this world currently.

About 35 hours 'til Solstice. Here at 35ish N latitude, today, the 20th, will be 4s more daylight than yesterday, and the solstice will be 1s longer.

Right here at my location, we top out at 14:29:19 of daylight on the solstice. Greenville city is enough north that they get 37s more daylight that day than we do. It ain't fair.

Right now we are at 19 hours 21 minutes of daylight, except that it doesn't really get dark in the other hours. You can still find the pee-house at 0200.

I could never understand, in the Lower 48, how it could be both hot and dark.

312 Today's JQ farm report:

Did not get okra in today. Was windy & wet, temp didn't break 60 until late afternoon. Couldn't force myself to get out in the muck. Tomorrow, likely more of the same plus t-storms and hail.

Sheesh-- but we'll be back to high 80s by Friday.

Had a hankerin' for fried okra a while back so looked for some frozen at the grocery. None! They usually carry it, so hoping it's merely a supply issue rather than discontinued merch.

Ah, dishwashing liquid (hand wash liquid) got into the washer somehow. I had it happen once when I had a solution of the soap and some vinegar in a bowl, and like a dumbass did not rinse the bowl thoroughly when I put it into the dishwasher. Complete mess. Took several cycles to get the damn stuff out. Dishwashers are VERY efficient at making suds.

Thanks for the ONT.

329 Morning to all you late night folken! How was your totally Made-Up Holiday? Yeah, I had the day off, and I took it and ran with it. What was I gonna do, go in to a closed office and sit there to read Ace instead of at home?

My weekend was actually five days, Thursday and Friday being vacation days. Got a lot done, the car's oil changed, grocery shopping, edits to a manuscript, working out, having breakfast at my favorite coffee shop and grill. And naps. End result? I don't wanna go back to the office. Retirement is looking better and better.

331 My parents had purchased a new washer/dryer combo back when the new High Efficiency (HE) washers first came out. I remember going to their house and my mother was scooping buckets of suds out of the washer, as apparently my dad didn't know to get only HE detergent. It was pretty funny, and I never thought I'd see soap suds so thick they almost looked solid.

I'm guessing after that day my dad never forgot to only get HE formulated laundry detergent.

332 About the bike speeding ticket, yeah in most states it's perfectly possible to get a speeding ticket on a bicycle. DUI depends.

Where I live now there is no DUI for non-motorized vehicles, including animals; and there is no 'drunk in public', either! That one surprised me. To get arrested in public you have to do something else, there's no 'drunk and disorderly', only disorderly.

So in Wisconsin, feel free to careen through the streets drunkenly riding your Shetland pony.

Is it possible that ice ages are the norm (outside the tropics) for this planet at this distance from this yellow sun, and warm spells are the aberration? And what were the tropics like during the worst of the ice ages -- were they temperate zones?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 20, 2023 03:42 AM (omVj0)

334 My 13-year-old buddy with that speeding ticket, I think it had to do with the school zone. I mean, hit a little kid crossing the street doing 32 MPH on a bicycle. I can kind of see the point, I don't think it was as much of a cop dick move as it sounds.

His dad, though, that was hilarious. He came home and handed his dad the ticket.

"How in the Hell do you get a goddam speeding ticket when you're 13 years old and ain't even got a driver's license!?"

No, childhood friend. Hillbillies/rednecks up the street. For REAL mayhem, at 11 years old I saved my pennies and ordered up 'The Improvised Munitions Handbook', intercepted it before my parents got the mail and kept it hidden. I'm pretty astonished we survived that!
The first thing I did was build a pistol from 1/4" pipe and load it with .22 powershots and ball bearings glued to the crimp.

Such is an interesting question, and far beyond my understanding to offer anything. All I can say is see "Milankovich cycles", orbital wig-woggling of the Erf that happen over 100,000 yr time scales.

Long term climate variation is tied to that, but there are all sorts of "stochastic" variation to that. Very long term, millions to hundreds of millions of year cycles may be correlated with the Solar System's complex orbit through the Milky Way.

Right now, the Erf's axial tilt is on a decreasing leg of that cycle, and the Erf's eccentricity is decreasing. That is, the seasons are getting less extreme and the earth's orbit is getting more circular. The length of the tropical year is decreasing.

These cycles happen over 100,000 year periods.

Consider where were are now in those Milanlovich cycles. Perihelion occurs close to the winter solstice, and aphelion occurs close to the summer solstice. Factor eccentricity in, and this means the summer and spring are the longest seasons, and winter and fall are the shortest (by a little bit, you can look up all that to see the details).

Apisidial precession couples with axial precession is pushing perihelion westward. Around the year 5000 - 6000, perihelion will occur at the spring equinox.

Now, couple that with tectonic plate movement. At the moment, there is more land mass in the northern hemisphere.

All that complex dance has to do with long term climate variation. We've only begun to scratch the surface in understanding of that.
