DeSantis Vows War on the Deep State

Famously, when he was elected governor, he had all of his staff research all powers of the governor, even the ones that have been forgotten about, because he intended to use every last one of them.

So he's not blowing smoke when he says he intends to use presidential power to the limit to dismantle the Deep State.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been working for months on plans to tear down and rebuild both the Department of Justice and the FBI, consulting with experts and members of Congress to develop a "Day One" strategy to end what conservatives see as the weaponization of the justice system.

The governor has privately told advisors that he will hire and fire plenty of federal personnel, reorganize entire agencies, and execute a "disciplined" and "relentless" strategy to restore the Justice Department to a mission more in line with what the "Founding Fathers envisioned."

But his ambitions go beyond bureaucratic restructuring. He wants to physically remove large swathes of the DOJ from the District of Columbia, including FBI headquarters, RealClearPolitics is first to report.

"We're not going to let all this power accumulate in Washington, we're going to break up these agencies," DeSantis said during a private strategy session over the weekend, excerpts of which were obtained exclusively by RCP. He vowed in that call to order "some of the problematic components of the DOJ" be uprooted, reorganized, and then promptly "shipped to other parts of the country."

This fits with one of the central themes of the DeSantis campaign, namely that he'd be "an energetic executive," a president with the focus and attention to detail necessary to make the most of his Article II powers. On the stump, the governor regularly wins applause from primary voters for promising not just to wage war on the so-called deep state, but to end it.

The goal, according to senior outside advisors, ought to be returning the DOJ and FBI to a more limited "pre-9/11" mission. Republicans were outraged last Friday when former President Trump was indicted for mishandling classified documents. DeSantis has condemned that move, and his campaign scheduled the Saturday conference call "not knowing," he told advisors, that there would be "news last night." But the governor is also intimately familiar with conservative gripes about political bias inside President Biden's Department of Justice. They have been central to his campaign.

"We've seen throughout this country that the DOJ and the FBI are controlled by one faction of our society," DeSantis said on the call, pointing to how those agencies were "going after pro-life activists," wrongfully investigating parents at school board meetings "who are concerned about things like critical race theory, and forcing kids to wear masks," and "colluding with tech companies to censor information such as what they did with the 2020 election."

DeSantis has assembled a brain trust of academics, members of Congress, and former administration officials to draw up step-by-step blueprints for tearing the DOJ and FBI down to the studs for a rebuild.

He consults frequently with Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Chip Roy of Texas, conservatives always at war with government bureaucracy and openly hostile to federal power. Steven Bradbury of the Heritage Foundation and Victor Davis Hanson of the Hoover Institution have also joined the working group to offer technical expertise and historical perspective.

This is a cruel move, and I approve.

There have been regular conference calls, detailed memos, and at least one policy retreat in Tallahassee earlier this year. The work is ongoing because their enemy, the so-called "deep state," is vast. Their aim is nothing short of crippling it once and for all.

A key feature of the emerging plan: Move fast. Don't wait on Congress.

Bradbury has placed particular emphasis on that point during discussions with the candidate. An alum of both the Bush and Trump administrations, the former assistant attorney general told DeSantis that not only could he "relocate the FBI headquarters" without legislation from Congress, but he could also eliminate and then consolidate the bureau's general counsel, public affairs, and government relations offices with existing divisions in the DOJ.

Bradbury has suggested that such a move would both limit opportunities for the FBI to meddle in political affairs and also "beef up and emphasize the field offices."

This kind of innovation suits DeSantis, who takes a broader view of executive authority than is typical of constitutional conservatives and who has told advisors he "doesn't buy" the idea that presidents can't fire anyone on the federal payroll. He makes little distinction between political appointees, such as FBI Director Christopher Wray, and the federal government's career employees, a workforce numbering 35,000 at the FBI alone. "If you're performing poorly, you should be fired," he said, referring to special protections for a legion of federal civil servants. "It doesn't matter if you're a bureaucrat, or if you're a political appointee."

DeSantis knocked Trump's promise to "tame the Deep State in six months," asking why it wasn't done during Trump's four year term. He also points out that a re-elected president Trump would be a one-term president and therefore a lame duck. He would have much less power to punish recalcitrant GOP senators, and the Deep State could just wait him out for four years.

In fact, the term "Deep State" itself is misleading, as it suggests it's some kind of smaller organization hidden inside the larger government. The reality is that the Deep State IS the government. There can be no "cleaning out." There can be only total destruction and annihilation, and then starting over.

That is the "deep state" (really there's no "deep state," just government), and I don't know how you win in order to defeat it. That's the problem.

His campaign staff hasn’t reached out to me yet, but we need to stop playing by the rules. What is Biden doing? Nothing. Carrying on like his son isn’t a crack whore. We should do the same, we have much stronger legs to stand on. And we should get our side to fall in line like the Dems do, period. Mitt, that one is for you.

Ps. Seriously. Anyone with much more political acumen than me (which is a pretty wide open invite), how do we stop the steal? No one is talking about that at all, just firing on each other when the big issue sits there in the corner.

Yup, the Florida state authorities "escorting" the former President and demanding federal officials disarm would make DeSantis the overnight frontrunner. If President Trump protested that we have to obey THE LAW, RDS could correctly call him a pussy and say it's not even about the specifics of the Trump case. The federal tyranny will be stopped, and it will be stopped by men with guns.

Then a cute sniper chick could shoot an Antifa thuglet, at which point RDS could amend his words to include women.

The tidal wave necessary to overcome the cheat, sufficient to win, will sweep in a huge R majority in the House and Senate.

It's the kind of waves that "makes bad people do the right thing."

157 As the months go on what an actual DeSantis administration would look like begins to flesh out. Given his successful record in Florida, his failure at taking on the IRS, the current level of planning, most likely informed by the IRS experience, to take on the deep state and federal agencies will touch off an all war between the president and the deep state. His talk of going fast and breaking things is exactly what is needed - give the bureaucrats and agencies an inch of territory to resist and obstruct is a road to getting ones head handed to them - this is something Trump demonstrated repeatedly. Regan proved what can happen when he canned all the air traffic controllers for striking. The FBI and DOJ will be a harder nut to crack but a relentless President just might pull it off. I am liking where the man is headed.

Ok, Ace, this gets my attention. DeSantis makes a valid point here, although I'd quibble with part of his knock on Trump's promise. And I never saw it because it didn't exist then. I'm not quite sure that it even exists now. I'm glad, however, that some effort is being made to do this. 196 National Review (who?) with a relevant hot take, showing their keen grasp of the Republican base:

Ron DeSantis Is Picking Some Strange Battles. He pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices who will “do better” than Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, saying "I think they [Alito and Thomas] are the gold standard, and so my justices will be along the lines of a Sam Alito and a Clarence Thomas.

I doubt that Republican primary voters will warmly and enthusiastically embrace the argument that Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett represent some sort of disappointment, and that the next Republican president needs to “do better” than those three.

At the risk of an oversimplification, all three justices have libertarian streaks or an overall skepticism of state power that does not always align with the interests of the Republican Party on every single issue.

I agree with him 100% but I never hear any Republicans or conservative commentators talking about it. What I want to hear from Republicans (Trump & DeSantis) is how they are going to match the Democrats ballot harvesting, no chain of custody voting (i.e. cheating) operation. If you don't win you can't change anything.
Everything else I hear from the Republican candidates is just useless noise at this point. Stop promising shit, get off your asses, and tell me point by point how you are going to win the, corrupt voting, swing states!

PS - It is sad when I realize that the Democrat majority in the Senate is because they have four (!!!) senators from Georgia and Arizona and 1 each from West Virginia and Montana. (Pardon me, I am just going to nip off and shoot myself. Don't worry, I'll be very humane.)

These rogue agencies are subservient to the President, there is a meaningful chance they can be reigned in with a relentless pressure. Tough to do. You bet. Next question, who else is shaping up to go down this path? Trump? He is a street fighter when a strategic battle is called for. We will see how DeSantis holds up over the coming months but this is a good start.

He also points out that a re-elected president Trump would be a one-term president and therefore a lame duck. He would have much less power to punish recalcitrant GOP senators, and the Deep State could just wait him out for four years." - Ace from the OP

DeSantis made a mistake, here. First, Trump ran on a the message "Make America Great Again" and "Drain The Swamp". No one in the Uniparty expected him to beat Hillary, least of all Barry and Mitch. The only people with federal administrative experience were 99% GOPe. Add to that Paul Ryan as House Speaker and a unified MSM-IC-DOJ opposition bloc, and yeah, nothing much was going to happen. So DeSantis blows part one, "he didn't do nuthin'" and then Ron blows part two, "single term Don". The easy layup answer to that is "Second Term Don, followed by Two Term Ron". Amateur.

This is the only issue that we should be running on. Even illegal immigration is #2, but you can roll this into #1 very nicely.

Without a sustained, unified effort by the entire GOP - from top to bottom - shouting from the rooftops at every opportunity that the last election was stolen - and you don't even need to include the ballot counts when you do that - there is no path to 270 in 2024. If we don't fix this now, future elections simply won't matter anymore.

It's worth it to me to lose 2024 - and all that it may entail, up to and including losing Clarence Thomas' seat before 2028 - if we can somehow get bipartisan revulsion over these election shenanigans, and a post-Watergate style overhaul of the system. If the few sane and silent liberals left don't see this and join us to act to change this system, it will never get done.

Anyone can talk. Demonstrating a professional, loyal, and above all legitimate force by having Florida authorities confiscate the guns of DoJ and FBI officers around the former President- only until Donald Trump returns to Mar-a-Lago, and with official receipts granted until then- would certainly indicate a man who's thought these things through.

300 281 What makes no sense to me is DeSantis is not Jen Bush. I could understand a case to be made if it was say a likely loss to Joe Biden versus the GOP going in some super squish political party. DeSantis is to the Right of everyone, including Trump.

Trump was never all that conservative. He’s given way too much slack on every other issue simply over his stance on the border.
Posted by: Equate at June 13, 2023 12:53 PM (Fj0B+)

Well using this issue as an example, DeSantis is essentially promising to try the same thing Trump was doing. But y'know, better or whatever.

DeSantis's main differentiating point would potentially be on spending bills, which is not a high priority(as we're screwed anyways) and potentially splits the new coalition.

Their policy positions are largely identical.

I believe he's been much more specific (and he's developing that approach more) as to how it will be done. He's at least serious with his approach and enlisting people who know the bureaucracy to draw up those plans. That is, instead of using it as a throwaway line in posts and speeches. What I really fault Trump for, is not seeing, as the Executive, what was going on and developing the best ways to deal with it. He's easily distracted and not really the executive he pretends to be. There was substantial mismanagement of both people and policy in his term, almost to the point of naïveté. A lot of that won't change and I don't have any confidence that if he's elected, that will change in one term.

359 For me, it all comes back to how the typical deep state criminals and RINO's behave so panicky and desperate over Trump, but not over DeSantis. Not that I don't think DeSantis would try to reel them in, but there's something about Trump --maybe the docs he has on them, or a plan already in motion-- that causes deep staters to behave like he's an existential threat.

I think of Dick Cheney donning a ridiculous cowboy hat and making a ridiculous video about Trump being a "Danger to democracy," and I realize there's no other candidate who can elicit this kind of fear out of Cheney. Trump accomplished the Bush agenda ten times better than Bush, yet Bush compares Trump supporters to terrorists. Very telling.

I kinda like DeSantis, I'm just not seeing that kind of panic elicited by him. Whatever Trump has on these people, I want him to finish the job and I don't care what my moderate/liberal friends think.

It's unclear. The neolibs have been doing a lot of things in re the Executive. Restrictions and expansions. Or rather, restrictions for DJT and massive expansions for Barry and Joe.

Theoretically this leaves the Executive very very powerful and largely independent of funding restrictions.

Theoretically.

367 A lame duck president might do better as he's not thinking about his next election.

But I'd still vote for either of them.

And the proper person to take on the Deep State is the President since the Deep State is certainly the Executive Branch and his responsibility.

I understand why a lot of normal people found working with Trump so very hard. He didn't have the institutional knowledge that included how the culture functioned so he was disruptive simply on a normal day. It was their jobs to adjust to HIS style, but no one likes doing that.

It's also easy to start thinking that your expertise means you get to make the rules. Which is where Vindman seems to have come into the picture. The President was supposed to obey, somehow, and do what they told him to do, and he didn't. I never understood why that wasn't completely obvious. Your boss is the boss, not you. If he wants to have a conversation with someone he gets to talk about what he wants to talk about, not follow limits set by your office. It made no sense to me.

Shaaaaaron, it's fine. It's not about needing a secret police, just a regular police. Franco and Pinochet, among others, demonstrated how the process can done with a minimum of social disruption. RDS doesn't need to run like Hitler or Saddam to achieve meaningful results.

I'm not being patronizing, your concerns about legitimacy are well founded. RDS is in particularly good position to begin the process, and admittedly I might be too cautious and urbane to advise him from the nationalist perspective. Nonetheless, a former President is being indicted like Zimbabwe, and wholly insufficient appeals to the status quo will relegate anyone to second place status behind Donald Trump in a real election.

His faction was the conservatives (later Optimates.) The senate having primacy. He striped the tribunes of all the powers they had accumulated since the ... Secession of the Plebs (the power to veto, propose legislation, etc.) Now a lot of those powers were restored years later (after Sulla was gone) but he left it all out on the court and retired unchallenged. He had pretty much either killed or outlasted (in the case of Marius) everyone who opposed him.

Now there was a Marian general still fighting a guerilla war in Spain... Quintus Sertorius(sp?) Now THAT would have been a good one to watch. Sertorius v Sulla.

But I also feel DeSantis has a proven record of being a disruptor who fights for conservative values - and who has a proven record of winning. Hell, I'm still amazed that 48 hours after the Hurricane last fall he had re-built the bridge to Sanibel Island. If Petey B was in charge, he'd still be holding Blue Ribbon committee meetings trying to confirm how to build a new bridge that isn't racist.

So, I would run to the polls to vote for DeSantis too. Why won't other Trump voters?

Caesar is particularly ambiguous. He did appear to have significant reform plans in motion before his murder though.

If you don't grasp that half a dozen people with two standard underwater surveying ROV's packed with plastic explosives could have blown up the pipelines, you probably shouldn't be working in national security.

484 Just moving FBI out of DC would have made the indictments of Sussman and Danchenko possibly be convictions.

And once convictions are possible, then McAbe, Comey, types have to be far more cautious.

I know there is the typical "trump vs desantis" stuff, but I want both guys to have a thought out plan.

I want specifics. I want day 1 things.

I don't want platitudes or campaign slogans, I want names of people whose heads will be on a spike.

The right wing purity spiral that comes from a Trump vs. DeSantis is very enjoyable and a long time coming. Just enjoy the show and wait to see how the Democrats are going to steal the election this time.

488 You want heads on spikes? Seriously I'll volunteer to join any Trump or DeSantis administration as head spiker. The very first head to parade around town is Lavrentiy Beria's little brother at the Department of JustUs. Head #2 is Wray over at the FIB.

490 Might have a problem firing the federal employees under the Civil Service Act, but he could do it the Lefty way: fire them, and let them sue for rehiring. Setting it up that their jobs are eliminated as they are terminated complicates their case to come back to a job when that job no longer exists.

If the termination doesn't stick, and they do come back, then take away their duties. They have no phone, no computer, no communication, no duties, are forbidden to bring private electronic devices into their work space, and all they have is a room with several hundred (thousand?) chairs to sit on for eight hours a day.

Trump has a plan. In fact, he put it in place during his last term. Biden repealed it. It's called Schedule F.

It's increasingly likely they'll cancel it outright. Biden is profoundly unpopular and not even the social media can make him less so. Meanwhile, the Garland/ Bloomberg DoJ is making Trump MORE popular by going after him more than they do Epstein clients. Chinatown was a grim and very educational movie, but we're about to see what happens when you apply it on a national scale.

494 The issue is that the vast majority of the politicians in DC are severely compromised due to the deep state blackmailing them for all of their nefarious deeds, and so must go to the mattresses to protect the deep state in order to protect themselves.

Whether Trump or DeSantis is the next President, they should leverage their pardon authority to offer a time-sensitive, one-time offer to forgive any illegal activity any politician may be being blackmailed for by the deep state if they come clean about everything they know about how the deep state is illegally and unconstitutionally operating.

Anyone who doesn't come forward voluntarily and is discovered to have illegally and unconstitutionally helped the deep state, will be tried for treason / sedition and summarily executed.

Note that this would only apply after confession and would not prevent their crimes from being made known, which would result in their removal from office, but would avoid prison &/or death.

This is the only way we completely dismantle the deep state once and for all.

499 Because whatever DeSantis' merits, he's clearly being supported by the GOP/conservative establishment that hates Trump. That is suspicious. If DeSantis would start ripping Mitch McConnell and others like him in every stump speech, it would go a long way to quelling those suspicious.

That he doesn't do such an obvious thing only heightens them.

501 If DeSantis wants to drain the swamp there’s definitely 2 things he should do: Create a department of information services and pull all federal IS into it. That will take away the power of departments to hide information and pretend it’s difficult to produce documents. Create a department of Audit and Investigation and pull all the Inspectors General into it. That will eliminate each department owning its auditors allowing them to ignore their own violations. Give the Auditors the power to prefer charges to State law systems. There’s a lot of bad in allowing the Feds to investigate themselves.

Ron not only won't be elected POTUS in '24, he won't even get the nomination. As for '28? 504 Constitutionally any administration department is part of the executive branch and therefore under control of the president. The DOJ and FBI are not off limits. Any union laws preventing firing are unconstitutional IMO. If he's serious, he should already be acquiring organizational charts for each troublesome department and identifying people within who can help. Relocation is a partial solution, but firing of many will be necessary and that will take somebody inside to help id the troublesome people. It will require a downward wave of command. I was always frustrated that Trump tried to run the executive branch through twitter, and that he did not fire Jeff Sessions very early.
Call the man into your office and fire him, he did it on TV but never understood the constitution enough to know he had the power.

505 I'm all in w/this. As a retired 28-year Fed, I know there IS a Deep State. It needs to be gutted, root and branch. Clinton/Gore talked a good talk about about "Reinvention of Government," which btw was not resisted by rank and file because in reality, it was Affirmative Action in disguise. My agency never recovered since it was implmented in 1995. It has been re-organized so many times since no one can remember how many. The template was based upon quotas, not competence. People put into mgmt. positions who had no idea what they were managing. Few Sr. Mgrs. w/merit. If a Republican wins the WH in 2024 and brings a Republican Senate in on thier coattails as Reagan did in 1980, we can decentralize and clean house w/o resistance.

507 I hope that DeSantis has backup plans for the backup plans backed up by a large number of lawyers, because the power of the President to fire his employees is drastically limited by Civil Service protections. There are ways, but they require sophisticated moves, not "You're fired," on live TV.

509 "because the power of the President to fire his employees is drastically limited by Civil Service protections".

Those "protections" are laws, and laws that limit the constitutional power of the president can easily be unconstitutional. I would even go so far as saying that the judicial branch's involvement in deciding this is troublesome and could in fact be ignored. The constitution empowers president. Laws and judicial interpretations are less powerful than the constitution. The constitution provides for presidential impeachment. Ignoring the supreme court or legislative civil service laws on the part of the president might be a tough argument for impeachment if the constitution is clear on who runs the executive branch.
