According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, Congress did pass a resolution requiring the addition of both stars and stripes when a new state was added. By 1818, that started to look ridiculous, so they passed a third resolution limiting the stripes to 13, representing the original colonies. Only the stars would be modified after that.

Someone in my family has our 49-star and I have no idea who.
This rendition is meh. Youse guys can rag on me all you like but I really like the Childe Hassam flags displayed down an urban street where you couldn't tell if it was raining or sunshiney in Obama's Oval Office. Hassam has a lot of flag depictions.

Man, I'd love to get my hands on a recent but older Britannica. Maybe 1980s vintage. Technical works like dictionaries and encyclopedias from the 1980s are the most-recent that can be trusted as not deliberately corrupted - and so I think they have a ton of value. They're the last generally reliable records before the Maoists started erasing history.

I have an 80s vintage Oxford English Dictionary, so I know (or can know) what words meant *before* the crazy years set in.

AZ and NM annoy me because they were both admitted in 1912, and both were carved out of the former New Mexico Territory. New Mexico was admitted something like 45 days before Arizona and they were effectively contemporaneous so I always forget which one came first. Like twins, it doesn't really matter which one was born a couple of minutes before the other.

My family has an heirloom that is a globe from a very specific moment in time just before WWII kicked off in a big way. Korea is subtitled "Chosen," Manuchria is called "Manchukuo," there is an empty square in Brazil for the "Future Federal District" where Brasilia now stands, the European borders are all immediately pre-war, Africa is a snapshot of the rapidly-shifting imperial boundaries, etc.

That was an exciting time for cartographers and that globe is a really cool artifact.
