The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

I understand when ethnic Ukrainians cheer for Ukraine's success against Russia. I understand that many people find Putin to be distasteful...a bully, a tyrant, a killer of political opponents. And the Russia he has nurtured is corrupt (although probably not on the scale of Ukraine!), with Putin himself being the ultimate recipient of much of that corruption.

But Russia is a decaying regional power, and the combination of its demographics and the loss of so many of its former colonies in eastern Europe and Asia has limited its ability to project power, and fund and man its military-industrial complex.

Its war with Ukraine is a border and cultural dispute, and regardless of its outcome the safety and security of the United States is maintained not by ensuring Ukraine's success, but in pushing back against the onslaught of China. The Ukraine war is a rounding error, nothing more.

So when supposedly sane people suggest that America's interests would be best served by extending our nuclear umbrella over Ukraine, and in fact facilitating Ukraine's acquisition of nuclear weapons "without any controls on where and how Ukraine might use them," the only response should be, "Are you f*cking insane?"

Can Biden Deter a Russia Nuclear Attack on Ukraine? Yes, if He Gives Ukraine Tactical Nukes

What Biden should instead do is tell Russia clearly that any use of nuclear weapons of any size against Ukraine will lead to U.S. provision of the same types of nuclear weapons to Ukraine without any controls on where and how Ukraine might use them. The non-proliferation mafia might howl with outrage, but the West must gear its nuclear policy toward reality, not wishful thinking or an empty façadeof a treaty regimen by which revisionist states no longer abide.

This is both fascinating and terrifying. The idea that a corrupt and dysfunctional Ukraine should be given nuclear weapons WITHOUT ANY CONTROLS is irrational in the extreme. We have already seen conventional weapons sent to Ukraine appearing in other places, and the temptation for a multi-billion dollar payout for the sale of just one tactical nuclear weapon would in all likelihood be too tempting to skip for the kleptocrats of Ukraine.

And what about if they decide to use one to nuke Moscow? How would Russia respond? Regardless of one's opinion of Russia's justification for their invasion of Ukraine, it is a border dispute that has not expanded anywhere else. So the use of American nuclear weapons on Russian soil rationally could be seen as an American attack on Russia.

What would be next? Russia attacking American interests in the world, or perhaps a Russian nuclear attack on American soil? That is called proportionality, and it makes sense.

The writer of this idiocy is a Yale PhD, so it is understandable that he makes no sense at all, that he is a warmonger and a fool. His attitude is simply an extension of the worst excesses of the neocons from 20+ years ago, whose most fervent desire was a robust American foreign policy that included making war on anyone with the temerity to disagree with Pax Americana.

Otto von Bismarck had many intelligent things to say about the world, including his most famous quotation: "The Balkans aren't worth the life of a single Pomeranian grenadier." We would be well served to embrace that sentiment with respect to Ukraine, because the entire country isn't worth the life of a single American...soldier or civilian.

Where the fighting is occurring are areas where Russian/Russian friendly people live. There is no sense in using nukes there.

They could nuke Kiev or Lviv or some such but at least so far the Russians have been very keen to avoid targeting civilians so it would be a complete change of strategy that doesn't really make much sense.

It is a combination of Bidden being completely compromised, his "team" being full of neo-cons who are also hoping to be likewise compromised, and a whole load of folk that stand to lose a huge amount of influence and money if Putin gets his hands on all the receipts.
Elon Musk recently said in an interview that the flow of history is towards the most amusing outcome. I am trying to figure out what that would be here.

56 As I have been saying since the start of this idiotic war the genesis of the war and for that matter the Russia collusion hoax, the Ukraine impeachment and the massive corruption that is slowly being exposed about the Bidens and eventually many more is the failed foreign policy plans of the globalist neocons that have wanted to expand NATO eastward for decades.

Everything that has been going on in Eastern Europe since the middle of the Obama administration until now has its roots in this horrible policy that gains the US exactly dick.

Putin doesn't like the idea of us breaking our word on NATO expansion and moving into places he considers his sphere of influence and his buffer against the west. Go figure. He also didn't like that we ran a coup in Ukraine in 2014 or that we set up bio labs there. None of the bullshit the media says is true.

97 No.

The center of gravity for Russia is OIL.

If we decided to become energy independent again, and drill/frack like there is no tomorrow, the price of oil plummets. Russia’s GDP and budget are dominated by the price of oil. If it falls, Russia is screwed. They leave Ukraine because they can’t afford it. We win without firing a shot or deploying ANYBODY. Oh, and our economy expands, even. (I’m no isolationist, but I do not want to go to military options when better, more effective ones abound.)

But I forget who is in charge…

139 DU barely discuss the war, so let's see what DailyKos' discussions say in response to: The West should "start thinking about the endgame" in Ukraine, says RAND's @scharap.

Once all Russian power is spent and they have no manpower for a generation, make sure every NATO country (including post-war Ukraine, fully restored to its pre-war territory including crimea) near Russia has the power to put down the rabid dog if it leaves its borders.

Endgame: rashists are driven out of Ukraine; all kidnapped children are returned; war criminals are prosecuted; reparations are paid.

Good start. In addition:
1) Give up seat on UN Security Council.
2) Abandon Kaliningrad.
3) % of all oil/gas sales to Ukraine for 20 years.

I love to think of the end game!

Japan gets their islands back.

China gets international recognition for their rule over Outer Manchuria in exchange for backing off Taiwan.

Muscovy returns to 1462 borders.

If the Ukraine foofaraw were being run like an actual, serious war in our national interest...then maybe I could give a fuck.

But, that's clearly not what we have here.

What we have is no more or less than-

A bought and paid for "war" effort to maintain the best graft and bribery conduit in the world for the connected and using our military resources so that the WEF/Davos/Soros/China/et al. crowd can get rogue nation Russia and Putin under control and into their Great Reset imperium.

Yeah, Putin is horrible and a turd, and hopefully will lose this gambit, but I don't care one way or the other. Because along with all of the above, Ukraine interfered in our elections and schemed/helped to get rid of a duly elected president, so fuck them too.

If they could both lose that would be great.

Yeah, Rubin says that we should only do it if the Russians use nukes in Ukraine, but that's just to start moving the Overton Window, and get the discussion of giving nukes to Ukraine going.

Of course, this would completely destroy the nuclear non-proliferation structure that we've had for seventy years, but that is a trifle.

179 This will be my first comment in over a week and there's a little story behind it. Last Monday I had a breathing problem that got bad enough to warrant a trip to the ER. After some tests, they found a small amount of that protein that indicates a heart trauma, but not enough to say it was recent, so they kept me overnight.
Count of luck here is 1 but unknown to me.
Count of luck #2 is the hospital itself is full so they're going to count me as taking up a bed but I'm still physically in the ER.
Count of luck #3 is the next morning when they decide to do a sonogram and ekg on my heart and I have the massive right there so when all the alarms go off people came running in from wherever it is they're hiding .
Had I not been right there at that moment, I'm not here now.

187 >>here was a commenter here (don't recall the nic) who -- when this topic was discussed after F. Joe gave Russia the green light to invade (both implicitly by surrendering in Afghanistan, and explicitly with his "minor incursion" comment) -- kept insisting that those nukes were worthless as Russia still had all the codes & controls.

Those might have been tipping points but I don't think they answer the real question of why did Putin invade? And for that I think you need to go back to the mission creep that has been a part of NATO since its founding and reached it's tipping point when George Bush announced at the NATO Summit in Bucharest in 2008 that Georgia and Ukraine would be offered admittance into NATO.

That was no small thing for Putin. In fact it was a red line for him which is why shortly after the 2008 Putin invaded Georgia.

Fast forward to Obama/Biden running a coup in Ukraine in 2014 and replacing a pro-Russian president with a pro-western puppet and Putin took Crimea. Then Biden suggested that he would invite Ukraine to join NATO and here we are.

And it's a huge reason Trump is facing trumped up charges today.

I think the problem with thinking if "Putin is bad" has everything to do with false equivocations and conflation.

Putin would be the antithesis to Constitutional Republic form of Government which requires a self regulating, Christian population.

What exists now is barbarism and paganism. Currently, until the devaluation and destruction of wealth is complete (Socialism works until it runs out of money) we have a Sodom and Gomorrah society which Putin is the perfect ruler to stomp out that evil because Putin wants to have a functional empire to rule. S&G only earns God's Holy Wrath (as we see the FUSA collapsing in Real Time).

Putin has been ruling so long, he has demonstrated that he is in the Sadistic Caligula/Nero type, but more of a Mob Boss that recognizes that his power requires the people to be in a position not desiring to overthrow him.

233 I noted last night that Ukraine is doing its part to further limit what is considered acceptable discourse in the West:

Well, Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of "Eat, Pray, Love" and other novels, is abandoning the novel that she is currently writing.

The planned novel was about the Lykov family - a family of Old Believers that fled Communist repression in 1936, went into an uninhabited part of Siberia, and lived completely cut off from civilization until Soviet geologists discovered them in 1978.

The reason why she's cancelling the book?

You can no longer write a historical novel set in Russia - the internet mobs will descend on you if you do.

The Guardian:

She [Gilbert] said over the course of the weekend, after announcing the book, she had “received an enormous, massive outpouring of reactions and responses from my Ukrainian readers expressing anger, sorrow, disappointment and pain about the fact that I would choose to release a book into the world right now, any book, no matter what the subject of it is, that is set in Russia”.

This is insane.

We don’t have to give them nukes of any kind, and we shouldn’t, nor should we extend our nuclear umbrella.

As far as Iran, what was the idea there? Those guys are f'n maniacs who would be joyful to send a nuke to Israel and start WWIII. Was the goal to make a powerful Iran so that the Sunni countries would come to us for help? IF that was it, its a stupid plan.

1. Entirely insulated from any manner of war in THEIR circle (while others do the fighting) --and so have become accustomed to an abstract idea of "conflict" seemingly death or consequences.

2. Living their adult lives in a bubble of Narrative: in which only choosing the right words can change reality itself.

3. And inside their digital bubble wrap for so long that they've lost touch with even the reality of death.

Look for more of this kind of thing coming soon. They could well be setting up a false choice. First, get a narrative moving along these lines. Then wait for the inevitable blowback because it's stupid and insane. Then stride in with a "compromise."

"Look, we have to save Ukraine, okay? So they need an insurance policy against atomic war. We have to either give them nukes, or we have to be able to use our nukes in their defense."

Set up the untenable, fake option (give them nukes) to get what you really want (an open mandate to nuke whomever for whatever reason).

The United States IS a a decaying country. And things will get worse. Donald Trump, for all his faults, imperfections, outsized ego, was the LAST President of the United States. We now have an idiot figurehead put there by the globalist oligarchs.
The meta-reason for this war and our "support" for it is to distract from the imminent collapse of our currency and financial system.
More countries now do NOT want to use the US dollar for international transactions, and are looking for work-arounds. China is only too eager to facilitate this.
The time is coming, soon, when the US dollar will not be the world's reserve currency. What follows will be ruinous inflation at home and a collapse of the Federal Reserve system.

Counter terror police have raided two properties in Nottingham today after three people died and three others were injured in a ‘knife’ and van rampage – with cops saying they are keeping an ‘open mind’ over the motive for the attack.

The raid took place this afternoon around Ilkeston Road in a student area of the city, where a witness saw a young man and a young woman being stabbed by a black-clad attacker with a rucksack at 4am.

After the first attack, a third body was found on Magdala Street. Police were then called to another incident on Milton Street, where a van ran into three people who are now being treated in hospital.||

They're a developed industrial power with atomic energy infrastructure. If they don't already have them, I'm perplexed as to why. Same goes for Japan and Korea. There were good reasons not to have nukes - they're an exorbitant cost center, they're politically difficult to deal with it, the US nuclear umbrella was there to help act as a proliferation disincentive, etc. - but those reasons are in the past now.

If those three countries didn't start crash programs to get weapons developed and built within a week or two of the 2020 elections, I would be shocked. It was clear that there was coup and just because we aren't allowed to talk about it doesn't mean the grown-ups at the periphery of our empire didn't notice it and take steps.

I think far too much credit is given to people voting. The real problem is the ratio of representatives to citizens is so great that the politician only listens to bundlers and Party stewards.

Voting (R) or (D) pretty much is pointless because they get their orders and their positions by a relatively small cabal.

385 Depends totally on what you think Russia's real ambitions are. I don't believe this has much to do with Ukraine, I think it has more to do with what is beyond Ukraine - and that is exceedingly a bunch in our interest. And you forgot one thing. Russia started this invasion in 2014 or so. Not Ukraine. And don't bring up the Minsk Accords. I've read them both, plus foreign reporting indicating neither side gave much thought to them anyway. And the initial reporting on the Uke's blowing the dam has given way to the very strategic and obvious realization that Russia did it to cut off the southern offensive routes for a Ukrainian offensive. I hope these two just keep slugging it out, wearing each other out.

China is yesterday's news. Foreign capital is fleeing. Regional Asian competitors are picking at them. Demographically they are dying. I hate FJB, but he's has taken money from every actor just mentioned. NO need to single Ukraine out - though if the bribery there is the cause of his fall, I'd love Ukraine for that alone!

Arming the Ukes with tactical nukes is creates an unthinkable threat to the world. All bets are off if that gets started as is life as we know it.

Maybe a couple of those big boys were shuffled over to the JASDF, just for safe keeping and a little research.

We had Nuke loading drills all of the time on the Midway. I don't recall ever doing them when we were inport at Yokosuka though. We usually did them at sea. We had broken arrow drills all of the time, those were a pain in the ass.

That reminds me, something is happening with supressors in Texas this week. I think Thursday at 2pm maybe there's supposed to be some judgement that might make its way to the SCOTUS.

ATF says they're guns and not guns at the same time or something typically bizarre, and Texas company is saying that the ATF doesn't have jurisdiction since the items are manufactured and sold within state lines.

Look it up yourself because I'm working off of memory, but this could be important moving forward. And might accomplish what two years of (R) controlled Congress with the most conservative president in 100 years refused to do.

Their Plan A was focused on getting the forces in the East to withdraw. That's why they didn't invest too much into taking Kiev and didn't bother to stop in retreating from North Korea but instead went pretty much straight to the current battle line(behind which is what they plan to hold).

If you watch a map progression of the war in the early days, it's clear they were hoping that Ukraine would retreat forces to defend Kiev and that they could encircle the core of the Ukrainian army.

Their planning wasn't centered on 10% of their forces carrying the war directly. The reason both of the side assaults were so successful was because Ukraine was stationing inexperienced troops there. Russia wasn't too focused on follow-up though.

So which part of that statement isn't also true of every Western nation and the United States in particular? We have the very same low replacement birth rate, but we have decided to covers ours up by importing third world barbarians. Is that really going to work out better in the long run?

Our military industrial complex can't even meet recruiting goals now. Our weapons are much more expensive but not dramatically more effective. 474 Ukraine isn't about Ukraine. Its about standing up to an aggressor. Because, if you don't, they'll just attack another victim once they've devoured the one you failed to help.

And the next war is always bigger.

I thought we learned this lesson once and for all in the lead up to WWII.

Instead of a small regional conflict, where we're fighting by proxy, we ended up in a world war. Better to pay Ukraine to kneecap Russia than to sit it out, see Russia swallow all of Ukraine (which was the actual goal), and then have a much stronger foe to fight in the next round.

Without a proxy to supply the soldiers for us.

This really isn't complicated. At all.
