Thanks to a random shoplifter or incompetent retail worker, my night has taken a downturn. Pookette went with me to Wal-Mart this afternoon to pick out a new pillow and got an all-in-one bedding set (cheetah print!). Pooky and I were setting it up when we realized that the bag it came in had no fitted sheet. We made do with the flat sheet, but Pookette was a bit deflated and Pooky went on a rant about how I won't let him fix society's ills with violence. Le sigh....

On a quick look, I reject that personal freedom is a "liberal" value, but that's probably due to a common libertarian failing, they often confuse liberty with libertine. Classical liberalism, which is what "conservative" actually is, is all about personal freedom. You can still favor personal freedom while recognizing there are limits. The armor in the picture isn't too bad, but still. Don't make it form-fitting for the D-cupped woman. Consider what happens if you fall when you're wearing something like that. Boobs are squishy. There is a better representation of the political spectrum in "The 5000 Year Leap" by W. Cleon Skousen.
On one end of the spectrum is the "Ruler's Law", aka Totalitarianism. On the other is "No Law", i.e., Anarchy. In the middle is the "People's Law", the sweet spot. There is no mention of Left/Right, communist, fascist, whatever. These ideologies can potentially exist on either end of the spectrum. Check it out. Skousen discusses it almost immediately at the start of the book. It is a simple and powerful measure. Posted by: RobertM at June 09, 2023 11:09 PM (+/lOf) 206

Several people who were celebrating gay pride month near me did not put out their flags this year. I don't know these people so I'm unsure why. I don't know whether they don't want to be associated with the "T" and the sexualization of kids or what. Both flags are the traditional pride flag without the black and brown and white and pink stripes so my guess is that these folks are older. I know one couple is. They live in a 65 + community.

Posted by: SFGoth at June 09, 2023 10:58 PM (KAi1n) --------- Ah, that brings back a very early memory: Dad had an 8mm camera and one Easter he's filming the family outside on his parent's old hog ranch. When he plays the developed film back for us later on the projector, there's the family standing in front of the camera ... and BOOM ... there's a giant Bunny Rabbit that appears out of nowhere standing with us. I'm like "WTF" (for a little kid) and how did that Bunny appear out of thin air? Of course, I got a magical answer ... and didn't realize until later that the filming had been stopped, and then restarted when the Rabbit (someone obviously wearing a costume) entered the scene. Needless to say, I was somewhat confused for awhile (perhaps the origin of my later magical thinking?). "That G-d was good and hatefilled rage monster parents are normal."
I'm sorry about that. My drunken, raging father almost killed my brother. I thought G-d was the first part of a word ending in "damn." One day I discovered that G-d IS real, and IS good. That He "holds out His hands all day long" to we, who often blow Him off because we want life our way, and don't or won't wait, or read and consult His Word for answers to our dilemmas...consider a man who suffered enormously: Job. G-d never did answer Job's questions...however, He did inform Job precisely Who created the universe and everything in it, and all without anyones help...in other words, sometimes all we can do is trust His Word, and wait on Him...and it can be a challenge to do that in these times. Pulled into the truck stop and checked in at the tire shop cuz I had a trailer tire with a hole in it. Trailer has one of those auto-inflate systems do I can keep it rolling for a while but it'll blow out eventually. Since I'm stopping anyway I'll just get it taken care of here. Go check in, guy says there's two trucks ahead of me be about two hours. Okay. Sign in, go back to the truck and lay down in the bunk. I completely forget I tossed a couple of packets of barbecue sauce in the back. You know the kind, the little tub shaped packs. Lay down, squish one and now I got an ugly barbecue stain on my sheets. Try to get as much of it out as I can. A big brown stain. And it's right at that perfect spot where my ass would be. It now looks like I literally shit the bed. Fuck my life. On the topic of great B movies - just finished rewatching Valley of the Dolls on TCM; originally just for the 60's reminiscence. And the Dionne Warwick theme is one of the great movie themes of all time.
The story is a tragedy for all 3 of the main characters, but it ended up being far more tragic than they could have imagined when it was made, which puts it in very different light today. Patty Duke's character has great talent, but sinks into drug/alcohol addiction and insanity - which is what happened to the offscreen Patty Duke. Sharon Tate is unbelievably beautiful, and her character dies young for no good reason - which happened to her 2 years later. Barbara Perkins's character gets disgusted with the entire business and leaves it for good - and that's what she did too. A movie that sadly predicted the future of everyone who was in it. The reason Nazis and Commies fight each other so much is not because they are opposing ideologies, it's because they are competing for the exact same base.
Mussolini, the originator of fascism, was a socialist in good standing. But, when WWI came he argued one could support your own nation while still being a socialist...you could be a national socialist as opposed to an international one. And when he assumed power he ruled as a socialist. No, he didn't act like Stalin...but he also didn't control Italy as completely as Stalin controlled the USSR either. And from the 30s there was a respect for Mussolini by the left...maybe this is what socialism would look like in a more modern industrialized country then the old Russia? And yes they debated the same thing when Hitler came to power in Germany. Hitler based his own ideology on Mussolini, some weird German blood and land stuff and...FDR with a large helping of Jew hatred of course. There are no leftwing libertarian and can never be. Why?
Leftwingers assert "rights" to everything...to drugs, to "gender affirming therapy", to food, to housing, and so on. Ok, if they are rights then...the money to acquire these things have to come from somewhere. Obama does not, unfortunately, have a "stash". The money comes from taxpayers. And so the government then restricts your fundamental rights to the earnings of the sweat of your brow to pay for someone else's drugs or whatever. Posted by: 496 at June 09, 2023 11:55 PM (tqfDX) The official lore from director is that Buckaroo was developing a watermelon breed that could survive a drop from a plane. They were going to drop millions of them on the 3rd world as famine relief. Posted by: Thesokorus at June 10, 2023 12:03 AM (LmVS8) 282
I handled my first Texas WC fatality the first week of my transfer from NY to Houston. Wasn’t even my account and was just covering for the rep who was out sick. Worker was operating a motorized pallet Jack and pinned himself against the racks and suffocated. I had no knowledge of Houston and was required to go meet the family at Ben Taub Hospital and then go to the worksite to investigate the accident. To make matters worse it was raining cats and dogs. Trying to drive and read a map in a storm while under a time constraint almost made me quit on the spot.

Buckaroo Bonzai was an almost-great movie. I pondered this for quite a while trying to figure out why - I loved the story, the secondary characters were great, the supporting actors were one of the best casts I know of, the music was fun - what's missing? And I realized it's Peter Weller. When Buckaroo should have been an over the top character (something like Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in Little Chine) he instead gave him the same range of motions Weller showed in RoboCop. He was the one huge flaw in the movie. (Imagine Bruce Willis in the role, for example)

I used to wonder how they quickly changed equipment for the bands on the radio or if maybe they had two stages which they alternated between. So that kid wasn't the only one.
Also, that drumming video I posted before had me in stitches the first time I saw it. It was funny thinking the drummer was completely bored with the gig and thought, "screw it", and went to town. Posted by: InZona at June 10, 2023 12:11 AM (bfyic) 286

Posted by: polynikes at June 10, 2023 12:13 AM (MNhXM)\ It's called the Greatest Comic Book Story that was never a comic book. It was made AS IF it had been a popular comic. So that's just my own opinion, but that's what I believe kept it in the realm of cult favorite rather than being a breakout movie that got sequels. The best part in that movie belongs to John Lithgow, and he delivers a completely unhinged, over the top performance - It's perfect! Second best is Christopher Lloyd, as John Bigbooty. Same thing. Weller makes me want to snore whenever he's on screen. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 10, 2023 12:19 AM (S6gqv) 293

There are no leftwing libertarian and can never be. Why?
Leftwingers assert "rights" to everything...to drugs, to "gender affirming therapy", to food, to housing, and so on. The "Pragmatist" caucus of the LP were reportedly Left wing Libertarians, in that they pretty much endorsed and supported every Dem talking point and proposal, but with the claim that it should all be done voluntarily, and not by use of state force. on being pushed out of LP party positions a lot of them went and became Democrats, or part of think tanks that support Democrats. The death of libertarianism seems to me to be a mix of the dopetarian overture combined with environmentalism. Back in the 80s LP types were associated with cutting spending. They figured that people who were interested in drug legalization would be winnable if they just focused on that instead. And instead of getting Dopetarians to support cutting spending and legalizing pot they ended up with a party full of people that argued that drugs and abortion were the only right people had - from that point forward you could meet LP types arguing we needed draconian taxes and regulations on everything...except drugs and abortion...to save the earth. Fascism was Vaisya/Middle Class and Communism was Peasant class.
Posted by: Thesokorus Stalin, while a minion of Lenin, created the Anti-fascist league in Germany (Antifa), which was, in fact, a communist insurgent organization. There used to be a very useful historical link on the internet, but...it has been scrubbed. Yes, fascism in Germany (National Socialism) was socialism/corporatism in one country. Communism was supposed to be an international movement to liberate the masses. Even in the 1850's, Marx thought Russia was too primitive for communism. He expected the rising Reich, the new Germany, to become communist. It was a near run thing as far as Germany going communist. The Landed aristocracy, of course, was totally against it, and so allowed Hitler to become Chancellor in 1932, even though they hated him. Hitler himself said (paraphrasing), scratch a communist, and you'll find a brownshirt, scratch a brownshirt, and you'll find a Bolshevik. Soviet Communism focused muchly on Central Planning, down to damn near each worker's schedule and lunch breaks. Thread that all through their society, and the Five Year Plans would go so far as to allocate shelf space in stores, remaining ignorant of "unknowable" factors such as weather, crop failures, rail outages and other variables.
Nazis (small) genius was to "allow" the continuation of Private Ownership, but with the larger goals and quotas and such, set by the State. But how "management" went out the daily business of things was largely left TO management, as long as they PRODUCED. Hell to pay if they didn't, but that's another story. Yeah, they central-planned, too. Send enough steel to Factory X or Factory Z, of course. But the private companies were in that fulfillment business, but often with Party shareholders, ass raping the actual investors for the lion's share of profit and gain. Tech Giants sure seem to have studied the Nazis. A lot. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 10, 2023 01:06 AM (e6UQI) 334

Apparently she is guilty of "biological essentialism" whatever that is supposed to mean.
Posted by: 18-1 at June 10, 2023 12:25 AM (lc5cP) "Biological essentialism" is what happens when a man (or trans-woman) and a woman (or a trans-man) love each other very very much. Then, a woman (or a trans-man) offers what is called "gestational hospitality" unless she (or he or xer or xhim) doesn't want to offer it. Then she (or he or xer or xhim) visits a Planned Parenthood, where the pregnancy tissue is removed and the woman (or trans-man) can go on to live a happy, empowered life.
