Is This Sci-Fi Crap Something?

Mostly sci-fi crap.

This one has some actors in it from Christopher Nolan movies so it tries to trick you into thinking it's a Christopher Nolan movie.

The visuals are nice but the plot is the typical blah blah blah New Shiny Thing Turned Into an Action Plot blah blah.

A plane hijacking movie starring Idris Elba. I don't know why, but I like every thriller set on a plane. Red Eye, Flightplan, Non-Stop. I might give this a try.

Speaking of science-fiction: a movie which attempts to lecture you about how Climate Change will affect your day-to-day life. We're just in the full WWII-style blatant propaganda phase now.

This has nice visual design -- the future, as imagined from the 1950s. I have no idea what it's actually about. It's an Apple TV show, not a movie.

Another War of the Worlds remake. Looks like this one is trying, sort of, to be faithful to the book. At least it's set in London. It's actually titled War of the Worlds: The Attack, which strongly suggests this is about the early invasion and will not be the full story. They'll try to stretch this bad boy out.

Oooh, stretching bad boys out is TIGHT!

If you care, the big self-published Kindle book of 2013 or whenever, Silo, was made into a movie. Link fixed.

Have you noticed "Lockdown Movies"? Movies shot during covid. Whenever you see a small cast mostly confined to a single location, it's probably a lockdown movie.

Also, if it looks like it was shot in Iceland or Hungary or somewhere they usually don't film movies, it's probably a lockdown movie.

This movie, LOLA, was shot in Ireland during the lockdowns. It's a WW2-set found footage movie about a couple of sisters who discover a technology to receive radio waves sent from -- get this -- the future. They attempt to use this information but they wind up screwing everything up.

An ordinary man is seized at gunpoint and forced to drive Nic Cage across the city.

I don't mean a character played by Nic Cage. I mean Nic Cage abducted this guy. Contact the police.

=========

Red Eye is the kind of movie Wes Craven should have been making in the 70s. He didn't want to make horror movies, but he ended up just making horror movies because that's all he could get funding for.

"I have a thriller idea with horror elements," might have sold with a studio executive. Instead, it's one of the last small joys of a tired, depressing career.

Me either. He was unlikable, the show was slow and dull as a brit soap opera, and I found I just didn't care.

By Labor Day, Never Back Down aims to have about 2,600 trained canvassers in the 18 early nominating states, many with hotel rooms and rental cars, iPads and evolving scripts, not to mention a paycheck from working in a position that is now advertised on job boards as between $20 to $22 an hour. The work will continue through March, with staff redeployed as the election season proceeds.

I first read that as 'Never Back Door' and thought it was an anti-anal sex organization.

Posted by: BrianK

Came here to say that. Did a search first. Yep. I love the Fallout aesthetic, but I'll never watch it because I won't ever get Apple TV. I hate this segmented time we live in. There can be no common cultural touchstones when every show and movie requires a whole separate subscription.

But I guess we all wanted a la carte cable back in the day. Now we got it, good and hard.

273 I really, really, REALLY wish that someone would make a film version of "War of the Worlds" that was just like Wells wrote it: Set in Victorian England, with steampunk-level technology, telling the story that Wells wrote (or as much of it as would fit into a feature film). 282 There was a book where Aliens showed up and saw how Humans aborted Their babies in the womb and they attack the company dropped his book and his contract, because the editor was triggered by the story

And apparently the author is pro-abortion, he just thought it made for a great story concept. Its like the book I read in which every alien species was theist, and were baffled that humans could possibly not be. It ended really dumb but the concept was something the author thought was interesting even though he's atheist.

I watch some “people react to movies” videos on YouTube. Invariably I hit upon Robocop, Starship Troopers and Big Trouble In Little China.

Someone hit upon a good point about Robocop, “it ain’t about saving the world.” That little point hits on why it’s a masterpiece.

Like most of Besson's work, it is masterful world building, luscious design, fantastic costumes and fitting, and has fairly cartoon characters and lots of plot holes.
It is not Ben Hur, but then again it has funnier moments too.

There is the banquet scene that is worth the price of watching it.
