"The proposed merger comes after the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been embroiled in lawsuits regarding antitrust claims.
The deal would end all pending litigation. I think it is a brilliant move to end lawsuits regarding antitrust claims by creating a giant monopoly out of all the participants. I see no way of this having any negative effect on the sport, the broadcasters or the players. Omaha was very reverent for me because I read just how utterly shocking that first day was for so many American Soldiers running into the very gates of HELL. Even this many decades later, I walked the beach, saw the dreaded "shingle" and the massive German fortifications and wondered "How the Hell did we ever do this?

NYC unveils vending machine for drug users, with free crack pipes and Narcan for ODs
Naloxone (Narcan) used to be cheap and humanitarian groups were assembling kits for $2.50 each. But Big Pharma, for whatever reasons jacked the prices up to $20-$60 per single dose. I wonder if the city managed to negotiate a better price or is this yet another grift for Big Pharma and NGOs that profit on the death and misery of drug addicts. How much of the stuff will be stolen and on the black market (to buy more drugs)? Surely the vending machine is cheaper than running a full EMT out to revive the junkie and drag them to the ER for observation. Posted by: Reuben Hick at June 06, 2023 10:14 PM (YXHzG) 88

Next year is the 80th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy...
Count Fleet won the Belmont on June 6, 1943 by 25 lengths to win the Triple Crown 80 years ago. The 25 lengths record would stand until 1973 to another Triple Crown winner named Secretariat. Count Fleet died in December 1973. 81 years ago the Battle of Midway was drawing to its close. Japan would lose four carriers, one cruiser, hundreds of almost irreplaceable aviators, and the initiative. The US would lose one carrier, one destroyer, many brave but often inexperienced aviators, and would finally lay down the shield of defense and with Operation Watchtower pick up the sword to beat Japan. The kid bolts away and gets completely lost in whatever he's doing to have fun. Doesn't mean he doesn't love you - it just means he's so focused on the object of his desire.

@152: "... and advertisers would complain."
There are advanced metrics for online video that are sometimes shared with advertisers. One of the most useful is average watch time usually as a percentage of the video's total length, but that's most useful for short YouTube type stuff rather than shows or films. There's a reason why big streamers like Netflix, Disney, Amazon, etc., are cagey about what counts as a view in their self-published ratings. Same goes for Twitter since they are just starting to dip their toes into the long form video market. Inflating the numbers is the name of the game until Twitter adds dynamic mid-video commercials or they let creators limit views to subscription followers and one-off payment customers. I attended Catholic elementary school in the fifties and early sixties. We had six kids in our family and that was not considered large. There were a few families with 10-12 kids. Families with 7 were pretty common. The thing is, there was no hot lunch program and everyone had a full lunchbox. A lot of people grew a lot of their own food on large family gardens, or even small farms, in addition to dad working full time. A friend of mine had 12 kids in her family. They were well cared for. Think about that: you get 86% of the countries in the world, in 6th grade, and you get a C. I got 73% of them right, so I got an F. I did, however, get the most capitals right (but you had to pass to qualify for the prize). Posted by: SFGoth at June 06, 2023 11:10 PM (KAi1n) 252
>>Pedo Joe could stroke out tonight and the salivating fervor for the war machine would continue without pause. The funniest thing about the clueless Biden administration is that they actually think they are in charge.
Ukraine has unexpectedly become the last stand for the neocons and globalists. A country nobody gave a crap about 4 years ago has now become an existential crisis for the west. And the entire thing is a lie and always was. Ukraine could disappear off the map tomorrow and it wouldn't matter anymore than Iraq becoming a satellite of Iran which it is. It's not just the corruption which is enormous. If we lose in Ukraine after the debacle in Afghanistan and the larger Middle East what exactly have we gotten for the trillions we have spent on our bipartisan neocon foreign policy over the last 30 years? DC is a business like any other and it exists based largely on the almost blind obedience to our foreign policy elite and the military industrial complex that funds it. If they have been wrong about everything for decades, what then? They are determined we don't find out. Posted by: JackStraw channeling Bane at June 06, 2023 11:10 PM (ZLI7S) 253

My dad died a few months ago, and I have been in a bit of a mental abyss regarding his current state. His death was not unexpected as he was battling cancer for several months, and we talked to him and reassured him that he would be reunited with his family in heaven; we often talked about the banquet awaiting, which is quite the enticement for an Italian, especially when food was no longer palatable to him. Ironically, his last day, when he was fading into delirium, he was reliving a cookout. He kept asking me to check the propane levels on the BBQ pit, and make sure we had enough potatoes for company.

225 The Japanese knew that southern Japan around Hiroshima would be the US gateway to the other Home Islands. Hiroshima was the HQ for the defense. Thousands of suicide boats waited in the river running through Hiroshima. Thousands of kamikazes were being built for the invasion. Children were being taught to use wooden spears to kill the invaders.
Posted by: Anna Puma at June 06, 2023 10:59 PM (xOcf/) The Japanese were wrong. Operation Olympic, set for November 1, 1945, was to capture the island of Kyushu, south of the main Home Island of Honshu. (Nagasaki is on Kyushu. Hiroshima is on Honshu.) Kyushu was to become the air base area and logistics base for the conquest of the rest of the Home Islands. The next planned operation, Coronet, notionally to begin on March 1, 1946, bypassed southern Honshu (including Hiroshima) to invade areas around Tokyo, to isolate it then take it. The Kanto Plain, surrounding Tokyo to the north, west, and south, was the only sizeable piece of tank country in the Home Islands. Kamikaze boats based at Hiroshima would have been bottled-up in the Inland Sea during Olympic and Coronet by allied naval and air forces. Posted by: Gref at June 06, 2023 11:34 PM (AMIL/) 315

I explained to the grandsons the other day that if it wasn't for the nuking of Japan they wouldn't be alive. The odds were good for their great grandfather (my dad) would have been killed invading. The XO and I got engaged on June 6, 1970. We didn't realize what day it was until later.
Earlier today, some people were posting about their fathers getting ready for invading Japan and how grateful they were for the atom bomb. My father was swanning around the South Pacific, working in the engine room of a resupply ship. But the Japanese kamikaze pilots didn't care what they hit. I've read about what the Japanese on the main islands were prepared to do in case of an Allied invasion. A lot of us would not have been born. And yet, I've got friends who are thoroughly convinced Hiroshima and Nagasaki were totally unnecessary, and the Japanese were on the verge of surrender. (Of course, these same people are still whining about Hamburg and Cologne.) I do wonder though if it isn't fair to as k that Pascal somehow distinguishes his Wager from Greta's.
Posted by: Thesokorus at June 06, 2023 11:15 PM (yEVhw) I went through Pascal's Wager again to be sure and Pascal mentions downaide risk of damnation nowhere. Rightly so, as the conceptual framework is gambling. So even on the surface we see Greta's and Pascal's Wagers re quite different. Greta offers only a less worse outcome. In fact, Christian orthodoxy understands itself as a choice in favor of Heaven and not one of avoidance of Hell or Sin. Avoidance of Hell as a motive is sufficient but imperfect. Moreover, Pascal's Wager is exclusive to Christianity as the reward of infinite well being is only offered by Christianity. And Pascal brilliantly points out it is a necessary choice for all who have heard The Good News. So, in fact, Pascal's Wager does not work for other religions because only in the case of Christianity is the return on the stakes infinite. All other choices are sub-optimal and irrational. I suppose this does not "prove" the existence of God in actual reality. But I have a feeling it does if followed out thoroughly enough. Posted by: Thesokorus at June 07, 2023 12:11 AM (UfVMJ) 362

I don't buy the argument that nuking Germany would have changed anything - the fire bombing of Dresden late in the war caused just as much damage as either little boy or fat man did, and that had no affect on the German will to fight on. It worked with Japan because there was still one man at the top - Hirohito - who wasn't completely insane and could call a stop to it. From a purely gut-felt sense of justice, I think ordinary Ukrainians don't deserve what's happening to them and if I'm ever in that position I'd want help giving my enemy a bloody nose. Politically, the alternative is letting a geopolitical foe run riot, a situation which will be weighed up by every president, prime minister and despot the World over when it comes to picking a side for the next big one which might not be too far away. My biggest problem so far has been that the support offered has been so insufficient as to seem like it has been managed so as to prolong the war. If you are going to provide F-16s we all know that pilots could be trained and prepared aircraft taken right out of inventory in 6 months, so why is it that everything seems to be about giving huge defence contracts out to mutli-billion dollar corps. Is it really too much to ask Lockheed Martin to structure their business better? Doing nothing, the USA would lose standing around the world, esp. off the back of cocking up in Afghanistan so badly. See, it was actually illegal to do that. I mean, go figure. So, their past was scrubbed. The diplomatic equivalent of “yeah, this guy was a Nazi, tho not an Ardent Nazi”. So it’s totes OK. Top three guys at NASA were all Nazis, Deebus, Von Braun, and some other feller. What is not so well known, in addition to importing thousands of rocket scientists - they also imported thousands of propaganda specialists, as well as chemical and biological warfare specialists. Add to this, the federal government embrace of Communist “refugees” both prior to and during the war, America had a huge influx of very competent (strictly speaking) individuals who thought nothing of killing millions or upending whole societies. The fact that America is FUBAR right now is no accident. So yes, calling for our allies to join us is perfectly reasonable since the whole point of NATO is a defensive pact. Our allies' interests are irrelevent seeing as Ukraine is not our ally, and none of our allies were attacked. NATO isn't a wish fulfillment alliance, it is, again, a defensive pact. Well one ally was attacked, the inactive pipeline between our ally Germany and one of the belligerents, but seeing as our government is currently blaming Ukraine for that, the case for action is going in the opposite direction.
