Gun Thread: First June Edition!

060423 calendar scaled.jpg
Yay! The calendar is back!!!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be June? The year is practically half over! Not much going on in WeaselWorld, just making last minute preparations for the 2023 NoVAMoMe. Are you planning to attend? I hope so, and if you are, bluebell and I are looking forward to welcoming you! See you in less than a week!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

First up, we have a bigly range report from our pal Washington Nearsider who recently attended a long-range rifle clinic. You tell me if you think he had fun!

I completed the two-day BangSteel long-range rifle clinic in Wythville, VA over Memorial Day weekend. It was amazing, and I encourage every single Moron living East of the Mississippi to attend. For those of you out West, I encourage you to make an excuse to get to the East side of the Mississippi and go to the BangSteel course. It's worth far, far more than I paid, and I'll be retaking it multiple times. The underlying principle which guides the course is this: "Nine out of ten rifle owners never attempt to shoot at long ranges because they believe a very expensive rig is required. It's not."

They teach normal people with normal gear to engage targets past 1000m. There is no reliance on technology, no laser range finders, no Kestrel wind calls, no barometric pressure measurements. Bring your rifle and a desire to learn - they'll teach you. When I went through the course, there were no custom builds, and no chassis rifles. They were normal people, men and women, with off-the-shelf rifles, all of which fell into what I'd call the middle to upper-middle class of weapons. My gear list is below, and I had one of the more expensive setups in the group.

Weapon - Tikka T3X CTR, 24" barrel, 6.5 Creedmoor
Optic - Vortex Viper PST II 5-25x50
Mount - Nightforce X-Treme Duty Ultralite, 20 moa
Bipod - Harris S-LM 9-13"
Ammo - Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X 143 grain
Suppressor - ThunderBeast Ultra 9 in 308

Day One: All the shooters (9 of us) rallied at a Subway in Bland, Va. The instructors showed up, we all grabbed sandwiches from the store, and then caravanned out to the range, which was on top of a large hill firing into the mountain range. Instructor 2, we'll call him Forrest, took the ATV downrange to put fresh coats of paint on the steel targets at various ranges. Instructor 1, we'll call him Dan Newberry, held court, explaining the basics of long-range rifle fire and wind calls in particular.

Once class was over (about 40 minutes), Forrest took our rifles, one at a time, and verified our zeroes. He fired at 100m and 600m, punched that data into a handy calculator, and generated - for each individual - a DOPE chart, which he emailed to each shooter. Within about 10 minutes, I had my own personal DOPE chart for my rifle/round, and moved to the firing line where three spotters awaited us.

The first target was an 18" wide torso at (consults notes*) 600m. Dan provided wind calls, which at that point required a left hold of about 6 MOA. My second round impacted dead nuts in the x ring, as did my third and fourth. Dan instructed me to place a round in the head, which I did, and then immediately followed it up with a second round which impacted less than an inch from the first. We continued to engage different targets at different ranges hiding at various points in the mountains, closer and farther, ending the day at 720m.

Day Two: Cold bore shots at 720m. Dan explained that to earn a B+ in the course, a shooter had to accurately engage the 720m target on their first shot. To earn an A+, a shooter had to narrowly miss the 720m target on their first shot, add the data from the impact to their shooting solution, and accurately engage the target with a quick follow-up shot. I had the wisdom to shoot second in the morning and was behind my scope while the first shooter fired. She got good hits on shots two and three, as did I. Great success, and a note - use all the data you can when compiling a shooting solution against a target.

wn 060423 Sniper 840m scaled.jpg
840 meters

We naturally split into several groups, each spotting for others while letting our barrels cool. At 840m, there was a torso nestled behind several large boulders, leaving only the head and shoulders exposed. Pic one shows an actual (target) sniper! Go find it, Morons! All of us made good hits on the sniper, and on the random pink steel pig hiding in the rocks at 780m.

wn 060423 1.25mi scaled.jpg
1.25 Miles (or a long way)

I received a call about an emergency regarding one of my kiddos so had to leave about an hour early - I'm not sure if they engaged the target at 1.25 miles, but I guarantee I'll be back to take a shot at it.

I can now, with some degree of reliability, make wind calls out to 1200m. I have a known DOPE chart to dial my vertical, and can, within a shot or two, engage targets well past half a mile. Suppressed. This course was probably the greatest 'bang for your buck' training I've ever taken. If I didn't know how much it cost, and Dan asked for three times the listed amount, I wouldn't have hesitated to pay him, and I'd have considered it worth every dollar.

If you have the slightest interest in being able to shoot at distance, take the course. It's worth your time, they're all our people, and the instructors know what time it is.

* Take notes when you shoot at distance, and more than just round counts. There were more than a dozen times through the two-day course when I - as the lone note-taking weirdo - looked back through the notes I'd taken regarding a particular target with a particular wind value, and was able to re-engage that target rather than having to rely on a spotter's call to talk me back in. Even now, looking through my notes, I find value in them. When I got home, I re-wrote them in a neat and organized manner, rather than the scattershot scribbles I made whilst behind my rifle. Provided I fire the same round through the same rifle, I'm compiling information that will only help me later. It would be nice if there was a name for it. "Data on Previous Engagements" has a nice ring to it...

Great report, Washington Nearsider! Thank you. Hope your kiddo was OK. I can tell you had a good time! Fun, isn't it?

One teeensy-weensy comment though, regarding incorporating atmospheric data into your long-range firing solution data. Don't underestimate it's value. It's important, especially if you want to maximize your chances of a first round hit on target the next time you go out. What I suspect your instructor was doing when he 'checked' the zero on your rifle was determining a baseline against the current atmospheric conditions. The next time you go to the same range, your elevation data will almost certainly have changed. If you have faithfully recorded elevation data based on range and Density Altitude, you will already have data for current conditions.

Certain models of the Kestrel Weather Meter will calculate Density Altitude which is a combination of barometric pressure, air temperature, elevation and relative humidity compared to a standard atmosphere, all of which will affect the ballistic trajectory of a bullet in flight. The influence of these factors is not evident at close range, say under a few hundred yards, but become a significant factor the further out you go, and it's very handy to have reference elevation data based on these variables.

I have been seeing a lot of reviews for Lapua .22LR Long Range and Super Long Range ammo recently, and here are a couple. Anyone tried it yet?

***

Not using Lapua ammo, but rather Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match. A 700 yd shot .22LR shot.

I have always maintained that just about any shot is possible if you send enough bullets down range. I mean, eventually you're going to hit something, right? I remember watching a video of an extreme long-range rifle shot, something on the order of 2+ miles, and was kind of impressed until the shooter mentioned it taking 60+ shots to get the hit. Still cool? Sure. Is it effective fire? Well, you be the judge. I always suggest to people the first shot on target is great, but it's the second shot on top of the first that is impressive.

Cigar of the Week

diesel maduro.jpg

OK, it's not a $2 cigar, but rather more of a $6 cigar. The Diesel Unlimited Maduro is a Nicaraguan worth a look. A great choice to enjoy while reading the Gun Thread!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

15 Weasel is right on about atmospheric data. Where I do a lot of shooting I’ve seen variations from 4,000’ to nearly 12,000’ of density altitude. To get first round hits at distance you have to take that data in to account. I do use a Kestrel 5700 with applied ballistics but some of the on-line weather apps combined with ballistic apps work pretty good.

24 Washington Nearsider, it is true that you do not need a lot of money to enjoy long distance shooting. My Savage 110 cost me $600 and my Vortex scope about $350. And with that setup (and spotting by Weasel) I was able to hit a target at 1,007 yards.

I hope your kid is ok and you go back and finish up the course. I like your gear set up. I have been looking at getting a Tikka in 6.5 Creedmoor. The Tikka T3x TACT A1 to be specific.

The kiddo's fine. He broke his arm, and is now cheerfully asking strangers we see around town to sign his cast.

I LOVE the Creedmoor round. I was dialing less elevation and getting far smaller wind calls than the 308 guys throughout the course. It's a much flatter round at distance.

On my gear, I'm a buy-once-cry-once guy. I bought the best gear I could afford. It doesn't make me better, but it does give me a higher ceiling.

---------------
I'll have to take a look. I know [Sergeant Harper's] Nock volley gun was originally for naval use but they tended to set things on fire that's not healthy in a wood, tar and canvas ship/boat!

Very good about the 'clear the deck' meaning. I had assumed it was clearing crap out of the way before going to battle stations, manning the guns.

Addendum, sort of: I just visited the link now so I'll see more right now!

38 EdL beat me to the Midway anniversary mention.

For anyone wanting to read up on the amazing things events, reco “Shattered Sword” by Parshall & Tully. Will work on shooting with the CrimsonTrace laser when we do some after-hours shooting at dusk - though the “migrant”/security situation may deter me.

As always she also enjoyed and excelled with the M1 carbine, a 10-inch steel plate @50 yds. And shot some clays on the trap range, always fun.

But they broke the back of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and changed the course of WWII in the Pacific. The American Legion Post in my old hometown is named in his honor.

71 rhomboid,

Do you practice a lot on your CrimsonTrace shooting?

I have a bad hand tremor, and shot better holding the gun at the center of my chest and looking way over the sights when using the laser.

I do NOT want to develop any additional bad habits. Do you shoot the laser essentially the same as you shoot normally, or are there some advantages to modifying your stance and eyeline to better utilize the laser and a less obstructed view of the entire target?

Rhomboid, I'd also add John Lundstrom's "The First Team." If you want an up close look at fighter combat in the first six months of 1942 in the Pacific, you'll find no better book than this on the subject. Even at this early date in the war, you can see that the USN was climbing the learning curve faster than the IJN when it came to fighter combat.

87 Blake-

The transonic zone is real. When a projectile goes from super sonic through trans sonic to subsonic the air flow is no longer compressing over the bullet. The drag coefficient changes. With some ‘’new’’ long for length Bullets the ability to transition through that zone is the key that bullet makers are going for. They are trying to get predictable travel through all zone of travel.

Charts. Books full of charts.

And some of those charts where the math formulas were printed, so the shooter could "fill in the blanks", follow the pre-printed formulas, and arrive at solutions.

IIRC, the gunwriter of the last name "Hatcher" was the authoritive source from "back in the day"?

To be certain, they'd address each and every variable that Weasel discusses in his class and on the firing line.

It's just that the Kestrel now provides most all the variables, and your ballistic calculator uses those for near-instant solutions.

I was born lacking the internal Kestrel chip, so would need to rely on the electronics.

Short answer: Probably not. One of the reasons Russian cruise missiles keep hitting non-military targets in Ukraine is whoever did the mission planning used 1980s period maps/plans. The missiles hit apartment buildings or other buildings built since 1992 that were built in the missiles' pathways to the target. Which doesn't speak well to the FSB/GRU intelligence gathering abilities.

Dope Card, experience and Scientific Wild Ass Guesstimation. (SWAG).

In the VietNam war, Carlos Hathcock used this method to great effect. Electronics began to become a thing in the '80s, and that was just temp and relative humidity. Rangefinders then, were still optical collimator devices.

Saw a podcast w/ Justin Bronk from RUSI who had worked on a RUSI analysis of the first 6-8 months of the war. He'd analyzed the flight paths of several Kalibr cruise missiles targeting Kyiv that hit civilian targets and concluded that the missiles were aimed at former Ukrainian military base that had been vacated at the end of the 1990s. The path the missiles took (using OSINT because the attacks were in daylight) intersected w/ buildings that didn't exist in 1992, thus his conclusion. Could he be wrong? Sure. But I haven't seen anyone else do a deep dive into analyzing why the Russians keep wasting high value assets against worthless (militarily) targets.

142 132 I hope that one day some enterprising shooting equipment manufacturer will market a chronograph device to record the velocities of accidentally launched recoil springs. Well, these are Canuck gophers, so probably welfare recipients. The usual gopher around here is the Richardson's Ground Squirrel, as seen in the Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alberta. Search that, and visit the museum online. It is a real hoot, believe me!

But what I have here, for some inexplicable reason, is Nine-Banded Ground Squirrels, which look sort of chipmunk-y.

Please don't shoot old TV sets or CRT monitors. The interior side of the glass is coated with lead to shield you from the x-rays generated by the electrons hitting the glass. This creates an environmental lead hazard around the target area from the broken glass.

181 Range report again, feel free to skip.

Was at the Bellevue range with the Nurse and Lazy Messenger. I was testing my shoulder rig in advance of a trip at the end of June and thus testing the PSA Dagger I'd selected for the trip, after verifying my carry permit would work for the states I'm traveling through.

I was comparing two PSA Daggers, one with red dot and one with irons. Oddly...I think I did better with the iron sights, though to be fair, I wasn't doing holster draws with both tools. Frankly, I seem to do better with 'squishy' striker triggers, probably due to familiarity.

Anyway, finished up the session with some 25 yard iron sight .22 testing and ended with a pretty good day. My Dot Torture drills weren't perfect but I could cover all the hits with three closed fingers, so that's good. Not ideal but good.

I'll let the Nurse and LM give their reports but I can confirm that the Nurse again did some very good one-hole drills with her Springfield Ronin. She does shoot a 1911 well.

With DB Cooper's handloads, 168 gr. Sierra Match King projectiles, it'll shoot cloverleaf groups at 100 yds. And that's with a bear-trap of a crappy trigger. Same projectile in the Federal Gold Match? 1.5 inch groups, best so far.

Still, not complaining of either. Rifle is what, fifty some odd years old, so is the scope. Pencil thin barrel. Everything you'd think wouldn't be accurate, but this one is.

The jamming Mosin can be fixed---you can substituted Finn Mosin parts for the magazine/trigger guard and interruptor without harm to the original parts if you ever want to reinstall them. Also you have to do a deep scrub as Soviet version of Cosmolene was some nasty stuff that can lead to malfunctions.

Bore sizes on Mosins vary a bit so you probably would get better accuracy on the rest if you fired cast bullets sized for the bore via a slug test.

For accurizing tips, go to Smith Sights and they have both the parts and the tips for getting the most of of your Mosin.

The lead in the glass is pretty well sequestered. Not all NCO's are chem or physics graduates, I guess.

And you can sweep up the glass, too.

Posted by: screaming in digital
um, SiD, I did not understand a word of that except the shooting part."

Sharon ,The 1917 revolver can shoot 45 acp ammo. But because that round doesn't have a rim to catch on the chamber mouth, the rounds are inserted into a thin semicircular moon clip, usually 3 per clip, and the clip keeps the rounds in place. It was a way to use 45 acp ammo, common in WW I, with a 45 Colt revolver.

It's a very cool revolver, hella fun to shoot, you'll like it. It's designed for rimmed cartridges, which .45 ACP is not. If you're using .45 ACP you need moon clips or the empty brass won't eject. I've got some .45 auto rim, which doesn't need the moon clip, but the moon clips are fast & easy to load & unload from the cylinder. I can't explain it all that well so I'll show you next week.

J transferred this one to me. He wanted me to carry it in Glacier for grizzly purposes. It's now my favorite that I still have - I gave up the .357 to B.

223 What whig just said (re Mosins) - as always.

But also - jamming is odd and should not happen.

Heat. Heat. All versions of cosmo liquefy at a fairly low "hot" temp. When I received my Mosins I put all metal parts save the barrel/receiver in boiling water, then mineral spirits, overnight. Cosmo no more. Would stand the receiver in boiling water, then pour same down bore, followed by lots of brushing with mineral spirits.

Accuracy - ammo, crown. All of mine have perfectly acceptable accuracy, with Soviet surplus ammo - meaning exactly the accuracy they were built for.

227 And what whig said re Smith sights, if you want better sights. And for very basic/cheap accurizing, a few guys sell sets of shims. I tried the field-expedient Great Patriotic War approach, a "salka", oil-soaked felt or cloth wrapped around barrel near outer barrel band. Probably had cloth that was too thick. Might try a set of the shims. But my Mosins do what they're asked (hit steel plates out to 200 yds) just fine when I do my part.

Usually use the Yugo surplus 182g ammo for that, probably higher quality than my usual spam-can diet.

Jamming Mosins were common enough that the industrious Finns figured out a way to keep Mosins from jamming which was from out of spec magazines/trigger guard issues. They did a mod on them and as a result no more jams. Think they have punch marks on the magazine sides to denote alteration.

The interruptor is also an issue in Mosin jams as depending on the wear or being out of spec, it can cause jamming. The interruptor is there to prevent rimlock (Enfields have no interruptor and rely on properly loading ammo clips and then charging the rifle to avoid it)

The Mosin Nagants manufactured as sniper rifles were made to higher tolerances than the normal rifle. However, Pavlichenko writes that when she finally got hold of a sniper rifle, She had to strip the rifle down and work on the components: "Removed the wood along the whole length of the handguard groove, so the woodwork no longer touched the barrel, filed down the tip of the gunstock so that the barrel fitted snugly, bedded the barrel properly in the fore-end, and inserted padding between the receiver and the magazine. To ensure that the various parts of the bolt mechanism worked properly, it was recommended that they were carefully worked over with a small needle file."
