  • Does the First Amendment protect the right of the people to peaceably assemble and petition the government for redress of their grievances?

    It depends.

    Depends on what?

    Oh, yeah. Right.

  • Microsoft is planning to end support for its Cortana virtual assistant in Windows by the end of this year. (Thurrott)

And replace it with something much worse.

  • Microsoft had a ten-hour outage of its Azure platform in Brazil after a typo led to deleting a production database instead of just removing a backup of the database. (Azure)

That sounds like bad design - that the same command with very minor differences would delete your database instead of just cleaning up old backups.

But it's alarmingly common. ZFS uses the same command to remove snapshots and entire filesystems, and LXD uses the same command for removing backups and deleting virtual servers.

Both have some degree of protection in that they won't normally delete resources that are in use, but it's a good practice to have two completely independent backup mechanisms.

  • Or three, if you care about your data.

  • More details of the alleged Arrow Lake desktop chips expected from Intel late next year. (Notebook Check)

This year's Meteor Lake is expected to be a laptop-only release, with only a minor refresh for desktop users - maybe another 100MHz or so. Arrow Lake will double the number of Efficiency (E) cores from 16 to 32 but will otherwise be very similar to current chips.

In 2025 there will supposedly be a new architecture with a greatly improved Performance (P) core design, up to 40% faster, similar to leaks about AMD's Zen 5 cores.

  • Building a tree-walk interpreter in Julia. (Luke Merrick)

Pro Tip: Don't do this. The results are... Bad.

Julia is a fine programming language but dynamically-typed interpreters are not its métier.

God bless the food scientists, because they know what goes into this stuff and they still drink it.

Disclaimer: It's paint thinner! You're drinking paint thinner! Oh, and a bottle of dry cleaning solution that's been sitting in the cupboard for sixteen years for added flavour.

The only place I've actually been that had cold soda for breakfast was Atlanta decades ago. Coke was a breakfast beverage option.

That would be the northern tree-dwelling funnel-web spider, h. formidabilis, at top left. Possibly the deadliest spider in the world, though it causes fewer deaths than the Sydney funnel-web because it lives in the middle of nowhere rather than in a city of five million people, probably because of the rent.

17 Been a great weekend of fun and a stay in a rental in Galena Ill.
When we got to the rental, I checked the coffee situation as it has a Keurig. When we stayed here 2 years ago there were multiple Kcups for the thing. Now there was one.
I texted the owner and asked where they might be as I can only find the one. She replied that they no longer supply the kcups. Lemmee see here, I don't own a Kuerig, so I don't carry around kcups when I travel.
If they place has a regular coffee maker (YAY!!) I'll bring filters, coffee, etc.

So....of to the store to buy kcups. Damn!! Those things are expensive.

21 My kids' elementary school was about half Chinese and half white.

We went to parent orientation and they had simultaneous translation in Cantonese.

So the principal gets up and and says "Parents, do not drill your children over summer. We will teach them their colors. We will teach them their letters." And all the white parents nod in quiet agreement.

And then that is translated into Cantonese. And all the Chinese parents burst out hysterically laughing at the crazy white lady.

22 From what i watched of the video, there's nothing that says soda of any kind is made from paint thinner, he's just seeing if it's possible to take a material and pull out one single compound that has a flavor (there was an episode of Japan's top inventions that actually showed them make a machine that you can pour something in to and it can filter out and refine single compounds from)

There's also once of those "scare factors" that you'd normally see in conspiracy theories, where he's saying "omg this compound is the same as something in paint thinner, just with two more elements" which is the same as screaming "OMG water is bad for you because it's only 1 element off from hydrogen peroxide"

I could, but I don't want to carry all the stuff for a VRBO type place every time.
It's bad enough that I carry filters for their coffee pot.
But, like the kcups, some rat bastard before hand decided that they would take those home too.

Then I just beed hot water.
