Titanic in comparison to today's ships

Titanic Allure 2.jpg

Titanic Allure.jpg

People always think Titanic (Length 852 ft, Beam 93 ft) was huge. And it was, for 115 years ago. But the truth is it was about the size of one of today's mid-size cruse ships, like the Carnival Inspiration (Length 855 ft, Beam 103 ft)

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by BOINK!

Fraser admitted it wasn't the danger it represented, it was the principle of the thing.

87 Just as the bat fight was raging, a bat flew through our 'great' room. Made it a little less great. Wife exhibited a certain level of concern, and some minutes of intense tracking and discussion ensued.

It was a larger bat than I'm used to seeing flitting about on a summer night. Flew with a lot of grace, not the furious wing beating you're used to seeing. We opened a door, turned out some lights, turned some others on, and before long the bat figured it out. No big crisis then, short runb.

Now I have to think through, have we added or done anything to attract a bat inside? I've been working on the argument that since they can scrinch up small as a dormouse, it doesn't make a lot of sense to talk over hermetically sealing all possible openings. I don't think I will win that argument, though.

Wouldn't want to spend a season with a flock of them, but the son of a gun was kind of cute, in a batty sort of way. Better than a bird in the house.

It's a reaction hard-wired into us (whether you attribute that to Darwin or God), and the would-be snatcher played on it brilliantly. Nobody else was trying to be an a**hole, they all meant to be Good Samaritans: and a baby was almost kidnapped as a result. I find that very scary.

Or, another possibility. Take a look at the article Trump linked in his original tweet. And remember, Trump is the person who in May of 2020 pulled the US out of the WHO because of their corruption and control by China.

Trump was being sarcastic, obviously. He's not and never has been infatuated with Little Rocket Man. Ron shouldn't worry, looks like Brian Kemp got out in front of his skis as well. But then he is pretty stupid.

So, I've seen the left's answer to this...and do you know what it is? They'll find pictures where people brought their kids to Hooters.

Now...I can't say I'd bring a kid to Hooters, but...the girls there are dressed, they aren't gyrating, and they aren't asking for ones in their g-strings.

And the oddest part of this? The left HATES Hooters - because, they argue, it "sexualizes" women. So...taking your kids to a drag show is ok because it is similiar to something else they want banned...note not banned just for kids but flat out banned.

And finally we get a clear night tonight, after about a week of clouds. It's Strawberry Moon eve, and the Moon is about 99%, and shining brightly. Don't need any lights outside now at all.

And Venus is nearing max eastern elongation June 4. It's about 50%, "half moon" now, yet getting brighter as it gets closer. Starting now, even with low end telescopes you should be able to make out it's not a point, but half-moon now. You'll see it turn crescent. At some point, you can make out the crescent shape with just a decent pair of binoculars.

Go check out the suits section at the Goodwill of St Vincents. If you can find a fabric you like in a size that fits you, the savings will be more than enough to have a tailor cut it down to fit you like a suit. Be ready to go weekly for a half year if you are picky, but there are some nice stuff there. (I am fortunate, I have an off-the-rack body and a tolerance for baggy fit)
It is good to have one or two on hand for funerals, trial dates and weddings.

1.) As a dad that has had babies in a car seat beside me on a bench many times, there is zero chance any mid-size woman is even picking the car seat off of the bench before my arm is pulling it back down.

2.) The odds of the female kidnapper's plan working out so well that the crowd engages on her side, seems very low to me, so a poor choice for her to attempt.
Further, very few unarmed woman are going to attempt something against a much larger man that has a high chance of him punching her in the face!

If I said, "Put it down!" and her next response was anything other than putting it down, I am going to full "terminate the threat" mode.

There are interesting recipes and canned food and boxed things from the 50s that were questionable. 225 I worked my way through college, but that was mumble mumble mumble years ago, so not recent. I spent 6 years with no television, and most of that without a phone because they cost money and took up time.

I also ran up what I considered a huge student load debt doing it, about $36K, and paid it off in under 5 years.

Bought an old used VW bug (actually two, and I made one out of them), and drove it until it died after the floorboard rusted out completely. 49 mpg. Almost paid nothing for insurance.

I also hitchhiked from St. Louis to Chicago, more than once. Without a single rape or blowjob given.

I roamed the entire city of Anchorage as a child, mostly on bikes but not always, went to parks and the library and stores and everywhere else without adult supervision and was never in trouble with the cops or anyone else. Except that dude that lived on Emory St. and had a bug up his ass about kids riding bikes over the corner of his lawn. Too damned bad.

It is not the same world, at all.

248 "People that like pot often seem to REALLY like it."

Why do it if you don't REALLY like it? There's really no point in doing pot if you don't really like it. Frankly, and it's no secret around here, I love it. (Haven't had it since April 30, but that's beside the point.) I love listening to, and playing, music on it. I love working out story ideas on it. I even love doing legal research on it sometimes (on my own time; is it my fault if sometimes enjoy pondering the primary rights doctrine?). I (used to) love gorging on a bowl of frozen mango chunks on it. Somehow I managed to make it to 55 with a productive and mildly respectable (YMMV) legal career, I take care of kitties (got one in my lap ATM), and I'm in pretty good health overall. I don't evangelize it - I don't suggest anyone try it. But I do me and you do you.

I carry Lulu. They are okay, not amazing. Their sizing is super inconsistent and they want you to hang dry everything. Who has time for that? Even though Levi’s is the parent company, my favorite are Beyond Yoga, same price as Lulu, head and shoulders better quality. They are made in the US, they are so comfortable (space dye for the win). Emily Hsu has cute stuff, decent price. Tavi is probably the best quality in that midrange price point. I think the quality is better than Emily Hsu for the same price and much better than Lulu, which is much pricier. I have some Z Supply samples coming, no clue on quality yet. But that aside, I have days I teach 5 or 6 hour long classes. That’s a lot of planking and squats, I need comfy that won’t bag around my knees! You can wash and dry them in a machine and they get better for doing so. They don’t fade, they don’t shrink. And my size is my size is my size. Lulu is very style specific. Mongolians have sheep too. You can make wool out of pretty much any mammal fur. The Bedouin use camel hair for example.

I made wool out of cat hair once, but I am pretty sure the Mongolians, for all their millennia of experience in transhumance life ways would not bother with pastoralism based around cats. Herding them is far too hard.

339 When I made my felt swatch, I combed out the cat hair and laid it into a box, layer and layer until I thought it was enough, then I wetted it with soapy water and mashed it down, and using some plastic sheeting to protect it, I used an orbital sander to get the first compaction on it.

Then I rolled it up around a dowel and rolled the whole thing on a table for long enough for it to get fully felted.

Express an out if favor opinion and whammo! you're piled upon with scorn (if you're lucky) or worse by scores of folks for whom what you thought or said was none of their damn business. "What business of yours is it what I think?"

There was a person from my days in HS who used to post an opinion online about something, usually from a leftist perspective, and then invite folks with a more conservative point of view to engage in give and take discussion of their relative merits. I never took the bait because, unlike him, I could read the "web room" and could readily envision the vanishingly small likelihood of a civilized and respectful discussion occurring.

Boy, a one-two blockbuster day at school. The water birth film then The Ohio State Patrol, with their snuff porn, 'The Perils of Drunk Driving' or 'Death on the Highway' or something sobering like that. Yep, lots of gore in that one. Headless bodies in drivers' seats and whatnot. Reminds me of the Anthony Anderson commercial about the effects of diabetes, including death: "Too much? That's the point. . . ."

When I was in high school, drunk driving was the norm in society. Sure, you'd have a few wrecks and deaths, but you pretty much got away with it if you didn't kill or seriously injure people. That Ohio State Trooper film in Drivers' Ed class saved a few lives, I'm sure.

I can see your point. But the sheer brazenness of the attempted theft is what makes it, to me, real. I've read enough stories of attempted kidnappings in stores and well as children just disappearing on the security camera with someone the family does not know. Also, if there is a man accosting a woman holding a baby carrier and she is screaming for help because he's abducting her 'baby', people's reactions would be pretty much the same: Kick the guy's ass first, call police later.
