Daily Tech News 1 June 2023

Top Story

  • Silence those annoying little negative voices in your head - by electrocuting the bastards. (The Bulletin)

Interesting first-person account of tDCS - transcranial direct current stimulation - by an avowed skeptic, who found the effects instant and obvious. As soon as the current was turned on she went into a state that programmers call flow, where she was focused on the task at hand to the exclusion of all else, to such a degree that her sense of time was off by a factor of 10 when the experiment concluded.

The literature for tDCS and tMS - transcranial magnetic stimulation - is mixed, and I lean on the skeptical side myself, but it's harder to discount this particular report.

Tech News

  • Adata has showed off its next-generation memory modules for laptops and servers, due later this year. (Tom's Hardware)

Not just new DIMMs - only one of these is a DIMM - but new module types entirely.

Of particular interest is CAMM, originally designed by Dell and released as an industry standard. This takes the LPDDR memory chips commonly used in laptops and puts them on a module, making laptop memory upgradeable again.

The electrical characteristics of LPDDR make it faster and less power-hungry than regular DDR RAM but also mean it can't work in regular DIMM slots, so right now everyone (except Dell) solders it directly to the motherboard.

And they only put 16GB in, so your shiny new laptop becomes e-waste if you need more than that.

I'm very much looking forward to this seeing widespread adoption.

  • There's a potential firmware backdoor in 271 models of Gigabyte motherboard. (Tom's Hardware)

It's not as nasty as it first sounded, though it's not good: The BIOS checks for firmware updates to give you a download alert in Windows, but it doesn't check that the site it connects to is actually Gigabyte's real download site. So if someone can compromise your DNS to point you at a fake download site, it will happily prompt you to download and install a fake BIOS release.

So... Don't take your desktop computer to a cafe and connect it over untrusted wifi. Or just turn off the updater. That works too.

  • This is the first x-ray taken of a single atom. (Ars Technica)

    The atom is pregnant.

7 Evening and morning, all!

This tCDS stuff sounds uncomfortably like the wirehead addiction in Larry Niven's Known Space stories. Wireheads have a "droud" installed in their heads, and plug wall current right into the pleasure center of their brains. If you don't have a timer to cut the current, you could sit right there and starve to death.

9 Anyway! Dagny the Siberian kitten is definitely in heat. She is chirruping softly as she walks around, even calling a little (fortunately she has a tiny tiny voice), and is being more affectionate to me. I'm sure it puzzles her no end that Stirling shows no interest in her that way. "Hel-lo, sailor!" "What do you *want*, woman?"

It does, indeed, sound like that.

I was doing alright with the story until the second book in the series degenerated into "Where's Teela?" and "What's Teela doing?" everywhere and all the time. At the close of the second book, therefore, I said, "I'm sick to death of Teela ... I'm out."

Yes, the Ringworld stories. Much as I love his work, I can't recall if I even read the third novel. But he wrote a ton of other stories set in that universe, short stories as well as novels, and they are solid.

I saw someone yesterday talking about the 'Cult of fan' kind of pioneered by Steve Jobs in relation to Apple. The idea that you try to create an almost persona to the act of patronage to the point where you turn your customers into zealots for the product. That means you can ride out difficulties because the fans themselves will do a lot of the work for you. No need for apologies and less marketing needed- they will evangelize for you.

I just look at it as more proof that people are not being to think critically and skeptically.

Estates are a royal pain in the ass. I remember an entire summer of weekends clearing out the in-laws home. They were hoarders who grew up in the depression era. What a nightmare of useless junk, with 1% stuff of value.

In the end we got enough stock to cash out to put in a new kitchen to remember them by.

Old Dead Brands worry about .2% issues or maybe even 2% issues if you include L and G. No one (in their right mind) goes after .2% in the main stream markets. It may work in luxury brands but never in the middle.

Yes, welcome to business. That's always how it - and society - has worked. I know gays and blacks want special accommodations because they've been told they require special accommodations and have been given special accommodations their entire lives, but if you endorse child molestation, people will stop buying your product.

Posted by: Indignacio Vindacatorem at June 01, 2023 06:48 AM (oWBc3)

153 The ostensible core of Pride month (it isn't, but let's play along) is a celebration that we don't live in a society where a person can just get beat up or otherwise harassed by a complete stranger just for being or appearing homosexual. I, actually, think that's a good thing, Rule of Law being universal and Assault being a crime, and all.

But what it's really about is not "its safe to be gay", it's a celebration that it's not safe even lightly to disapprove of it. It's about victimization. It's about division. It's about heightening conflict.

It's about Critical Theory. Which hasn't gone away just because it became a meme for a few months and then people stopped talking about it.

Clearing an estate with recalcitrant, lazy, and greedy "family" involved, especially with a poorly written will, is a soul sucking farce that you're best rid of as soon as possible at any price, and the more it drags out, the more gets absorbed out of the pot by third parties like utilities and the tax man anyway.

Same as they couldn't help but name their movement "Pride", there is no reason to attack any other religions that are going to send people to Hell. They're on the same side. They only focus on one.

Are they doing it intentionally out of fear of being killed by the peaceful practitioners of the other religions? Maybe. But it works for their spiritual side of the battle just the same.

Found some old termite damage that had to be repaired, and some electrical jankiness that required rework, but all in all a very smooth operation to date. We're cooking out on the patio with a green egg and a griddle, and washing dishes in the bathroom.

And the best galley I can remember eating at was the chow hall at Kadena.

Yup, when the wife and I finished cleaning out the mess that her siblings couldn't be bothered with and the money was exchanged - though my wife got shorted about 80 thousand dollars - we walked away and haven't spoken to her siblings since. We know they conspired to cheat her.

197 My mom wore herself ragged taking care of her mother and dumping countless hours and dollars into keeping her and her house going.

... while her shithead siblings tricked their mother into taking out ridiculous loans and reverse mortgages, and then "borrowing" the cash from her, completely off the record, to pay their own mortgages and car payments. Did you not think my mom would find out eventually, being the executor of the estate and all?

And then they kicked up a fuss about not getting an inheritance, because the estate was underwater.

The fact that they're not in jail for fraud and elder abuse is a testament to either the clemency or the spinelessness of my mother. I choose to believe it's the former.

Hippies burning library cards, Abby Hoffman telling everybody to steal books. I don't judge a man by the length of his hair or the kind of music he listens to. Rock was never my bag. But you put on a pair of shoes when you walk into the Public Library, fella.

208 At least I'm not concerned with siblings' taking money they're not "entitled" to--

I had POA before Dad passed, and didn't screw anybody over. Didn't pull any BS.

It's just that now, siblings all want this or that, but can't be arsed to make moves. And *someone* has to care for the property until it's vacant. (and then prep it for sale)

There's a limit, ya know? It's a bit more involved than what I've stated here, but not terribly complicated.

I'm old. I'm tired. I've got a full plate, beyond taking care of the Estate. And fking siblings have done fk all to help. That's my entire gripe.
