He actually discusses the historicity of topless Roman gladiatrices in another video (spoiler: they were real, and spectacular). Here he's just debunking the notion - nearly Jaynesian in its vapidity - that the ancient Greeks couldn't see the colour blue. Well-researched and well-argued, including a deconstruction of an old RadioLab episode that I had assumed was largely accurate. He is careful to address the argument rather than attacking the arguer except in the case of the BBC, who just made shit up and fully deserve it. Disclaimer: It's doesn't look blue, it just looks like it looks blue. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

. . . Wait. Topless gladiatrices were real, let alone spectacular? How come they never told me about this in history class --? All that junk about dates and who was emperor when, and not a hint --! Anyway: I watched Time Bandits last night for the first time since the film was new. Some of my melatonin-fueled dreams have been a lot like Terry Gilliam's visions on film, I think. A fun movie. Though the only part I could recall from years ago was Sean Connery's turn as King Agamemnon. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 30, 2023 04:35 AM (omVj0) 11

"Jaynesian in its vapidity" -- good line, but I don't know who Jaynes was?
How could anyone conclude that the Greeks couldn't see the color blue? The sky has not changed in human history. And the Aegean area had a lot of sky. It was right above them! If their language doesn't seem to have a word for "blue," maybe the real word for "blue" has been mistranslated. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 30, 2023 04:42 AM (omVj0) 16

The video about the color blue was fantastic. My take away is all Youtube personalities are in fact fronts for ChatGPT which is a proven liar. I love all the lunatic stuff about ancient aliens, big foot, and now, that the Greeks, when they weren't butt buggering each other, were color blind. But that doesn't mean I buy into the lunacy that ignores the obvious except for the 1950s movie Them which as a kid I knew was a documentary because it was well known that atomic bomb radiation caused mutations and we still haven't begun to discuss Superman and Kryptonite.
In conclusion I can say this: Lapis Lazuli. Look it up. There might even be a YouTube video about it. Posted by: Lost In Space at May 30, 2023 05:05 AM (a175k) Posted by: Bitblt at May 30, 2023 05:05 AM (O+SGk) Posted by: 6eyes at May 30, 2023 05:06 AM (9ufEO) 23

The Greeks spoke to trees . . . I know the ancient Romans' religion was animistic, that they assumed there were minor gods in everything from rocks to trees as well as the sea and sky. Did the early Greeks think so too? Their classic mythology assumed gods and goddesses *in charge of* nearly everything, but did the Greeks or their predecessors think the trees, for instance, actually contained wood nymphs?

“We will not openly out any student because of one law if we know that that’s going to cause harm to that child,” Fargo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rupak Gandhi said. This has nothing to do with the law. This is EVIL as real as Hitler Youth or Mao's cultural revolution. It should be no surprise that AI "makes shit up". ChatGPT and its analogues are designed to synthesize material that mimics the material in its database. They have no notion of "true" or "false" or "verifiable", let alone any notion of the requirements of science or the law. When asked to generate a legal brief or a scientific paper, it will synthesize *all* of the brief or paper, including citations.
For this reason, anyone who wants to incorporate a text synthesizer like ChatGPT into a search engine has rocks in his head. What it may well do is synthesize "references" to fulfill your query, and inquirer will have no easy way to tell the genuine links from the fakes. Do not get your history from YouTubers. We have _exactly one_ reference to female gladiators in the entire corpus, and it's a partial stela that shows two female gladiators fighting. And they're not topless. That's it. The context was not preserved, so we have no idea if the stela represents something that was real, if it's artistic, if it was some kind of joke, whatever. Aside from that stela we have absolutely no explicit, reliable references to female _gladiators_ whatsoever. (Women taking part in the Games, yes, but there was a lot more to the games than gladiator fights). But you can't monetize a 30 second "we don't actually know" video.
