Overnight Thread: Memorial Day – 5/29/2023

Although my family has been spared the anguish of losing a loved one in war, my childhood best friend (“Buddy” had an uncle killed in Vietnam in 1967. More specifically, Buddy’s mother lost her kid brother, Jack, in Vietnam. She was my “emergency backup mother” while I was growing up, and is still a part of my life.

Buddy was too young to remember Jack or his death, but Uncle Jack’s pictures were on the wall, and he was held in reverence in that family.

As the 1970s became the 1980s, Jack seemed to now be a person from another era, rarely discussed except on Memorial Day, and far removed from the life of his surviving sister and her family.

But in the early 1990s, by which time Buddy and I were young adults, our families decided to have a multi-family, multi-generational vacation at a beach house on the Gulf Coast.

Joining us from out of state were Buddy’s grandparents…Jack’s parents.

It was in that beach house that I came to fully understood their pain and loss. 25 years after losing his only son, Grandfather still talked about Jack constantly. He told us about Jack’s character, his heart, and his patriotism. He told us what a great father Jack would have been, and how he wished that Buddy had cousins from Uncle Jack here at the beach with us.

When Buddy, my dad, and I headed out fishing one day, Grandfather told us that Jack would have loved to join us.

At grace before supper each night, Grandfather thanked God for the years Jack was in their lives, and prayed that He would hold Jack in his loving embrace until the family eventually reunited in Heaven.

Grandfather talked about the war and the circumstance of Jack’s death, striving to find the words to assure himself that Jack’s death was not in vain.

Grandmother cried several times during the vacation, still heartbroken about losing her son 25 years prior.

Their pain only ended when they left this earthly realm. I pray that they are now reunited with Jack. Buddy’s mother still grieves the brother she lost 56 years ago.

We are so blessed that there are men like Jack who selflessly gave their lives for our country. May God give comfort to their survivors, and provide us guidance to make such heartbreaking deaths less common.

Has a colored pencil kind of sketch of a dude who looks like he's wearing a baseball uniform but with a giant red splotch on his ass. 11 Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day.

I went with Mom to a commemoration at the local veterans' cemetery (there's a museum nearby dedicated to the armed forces' Stars and Stripes newspaper, which is pretty cool). The ceremony included most of what you might expect, but one man got up and read a poem titled "The Broken Soldier," dedicated to his son, an Afghanistan vet suffering badly from PTSD.

It was one of those "not a dry eye in the house" moments.

I left Babylon DC pretty early this morning. The route I take to West PA pretty much skips well-travelled routes. Lots of small towns to drive through. Lots of small towns with American Flags along the street, in yards, and on lamp posts. The ones that could be put at half-mast were. It was nice to be back in America again, even if it's only for 2 weeks. Got to my folks' house by noon and had a picnic with the family. It was nice.

31 My dad's brother, Teddy, (10+ years his senior) joined the RAF early on, as Britain was on the front line of Hitler's war. After more than 50 missions over Germany in Lancasters as a bombardier, the 23 year old Flight Sergeant died on a nighttime training mission, less than 50 miles from home, less than a month from the official end of the war. His parents never quite recovered from the loss of their eldest son, leaving England with my father, their youngest, in tow, and settling in New York.

The number of families shattered by WWII is incalculable. So too is the level of gratitude for those who gave all so we could pursue a better life. Inexpressible thanks to all who gave the full measure.

38 My military retired father was a Korean War Vet but he never talked about it. Wasn't that he was trying to bury it because he was a VFW commander for a number of years and very active in the American Legion . I always regret not asking about his experiences . He passed from a service related disability far too soon at 55 years old. I always strived and thought it would be a success to be just 1/2 the man he was.

40 Not gonna lie, the Plussites aren't a military family. I mean yeah, sure, I have some great uncles or whatever that bought it in WWII but so did everyone, goes with the territory when you've got a bit of the old full mobilization going on. I respect what our military folks do, but I try not to pry too hard or do that really fake "I wear the yellow ribbon and support our troops!" nonsense.

Back when the Plus family lived in the San Diego metro area I was on a lot of flights with military types going to and from the bases out there, I was polite when the occasion called for it but generally kept my distance and let them have some alone time. That doting fakeness is why. Right? Wrong? Doesn't matter, it's what I did.

42 I was fortunate. I graduated high school in June of '66, and moved to Nebraska two months later, cutting all ties with the kids I went to high school with. So I never heard word one about anyone I might have known being shipped off to 'Nam. Only one guy I knew in college lost his deferment, and spent a year over there as a medic. My older male relatives made it through WW I and II without a scratch. So maybe Memorial Day doesn't have the same horrible connotations for me as it does for those of you who lost relatives, friends, and served. But I still understand how much I owe those who left home and never came back or came back broken in body and/or spirit.

He may not have wanted to talk about it anyway. My grandpa served in Korea and for most of my life, he only said that it was pretty boring, he spent the whole war driving a truck around. It was only in his last years that he began to slip and occasionally referred to getting shot at. Sometimes, they just don't want to discuss it, or don't think they'd be able to make us understand, or both.

But Uncle Jack didn't die for American freedoms, he died in the service of strangers in Vietnam and the power brokers who sacrificed other people's lives for reasons God only knows.

We memorialize Uncle Jack because he went and sacrificed his life for others. But make no mistake, no soldier in the miliary in the past century has fought for American freedoms, and while their sacrifice is deemed noble, we shouldn't be gaslighting ourselves that they died for the cause of Freedom.

55 When I was very young, a teenager across the street saved his pennies and bought a brand new Ford Mustang, convertible, cream with red interior. The prettiest car I had ever seen. He let me sit in the passenger seat once and I thought maybe I was a princess after all.

Then he left for boot camp, and he never came back, and that car got moved into a shed, and I never learned what became of it. But, a gold star was posted in the window, and we didn't go over there to visit any more.

Vietnam was awful.

57 It was the 80s whe I first visited "The Wall" in DC. I don't know if people remember now, there was a lot of controversy over the monument. It was not like the others. It was "modern" and many thought ugly. I remember reading that it was appropriate because it was an ugly gash in The Mall, like the way the war in Vietnam tore our culture.

So I did not know what to expect. My father and stepfather had been pilots in Vietnam, and they lived, so it was not a touchpoint for me.

But I got there, and as you walk down the incline to the center of the monument, you slowly lose the sounds of traffic and whatever else is going on in DC. It was like a sanctuary, and to me, it seemed a very fitting monument to the war and the men and women who had died there.

I remember seeing a man who was then probably in his 30s. He was with a young boy, maybe 10 years old. The man pointed to a name, and told the boy about what happened to the man whose name it was, then moved his hand a little farther along, and told the story of the man behind that name.

It's dusty in here.

I really liked that memorial marker that someone posted from England that was something along the lines of "Dedicated to the Cavaliers and Roundheads that died for their cause." But what do I know, I'm one of those dirty heretics that's not down with demolishing Confederate stuff--most of whom were Mexican-American war heroes in their own right--because Current Thing. FFS, let the dead rest.

Bullshit. We fought the red Chinese in that war. Any fight against communists is a fight for freedom. I find it rather offensive that you think the deaths of people I knew were a waste of time. I equally find it offensive that people I dated and knew who were damaged by that war did it for cynical reasons.

It still remains, the difference is those values have been so thoroughly suborned by the progressive left as to be invisible. A cleansing is desperately needed.

As we have in our past, we will meet these issues and prevail over them. This is a huge part of our heritage to continue the struggle of our predecessors to ensure the Republic stands. 74 Today sra blaster and I are in the small town nearest our farm in Florida. I think of this as real America. Or maybe forgotten America. The town is small, but they have a large and very well done Veteran's Memorial Park,with markers for each war since WWI, and names of veterans and thefallen.

This weekend the place was surrounded with flags, and they had a ceremony there.

Most times I think this country is over. But when I come here I think maybe not. That's probably whywe bought land here.

80 I post this, as I do every Memorial Day, as much as a reminder to myself, as for any other reason. On account of the length it will take several posts.

They were all really just boys, by age. They never had a chance to marry, have families, never had children. They were all classmates, and friends of mine, and in the final analysis, comrades-in-arms. Other people have longer lists, but this is mine.

I never completely forget these guys, but today is special. I can see their faces, almost hear their voices.

87 My father-in-law fought in Korea. His wife had my brother-in-law while he was in combat (and he was in the front lines) The first time he saw him was when he came home. Thankfully he came home.

He never spoke about the war. It was pure horror. When someone like that tells you the ones that didn't come home were the heroes, you listen to them.

99 My dad was a Korean war vet with three older brothers who served in WW2. They all made it home in one piece. He talked about his experience on and off but less as time went on. He joined the VFW but later quit, having some kind of disagreement with the local unit. I think that had to do with him being an actual combat vet with a CIB and our little town local VFW chapter being run by REMFs from WW2 that saw his war as a police action. We did always go to the parade and cemetery ceremonies held on Memorial Day, a day which now has more significance for my family since my Dad died on Memorial Day 22 years ago.

101 Visited Dad's plot yesterday. Beautiful, sunny late afternoon in Montana. Folks had taken the time to plant flags. Also, Dad had a nice floral arrangement most likely planted by my Marine brother and his wife.

Dad never saw combat. Neither did I. All of Dad's sons served. Only one, baby brother, saw combat (and that was not lengthy, praise the Lord). We're all still here. For that, Mom is grateful.

I saw a lot of ladies dabbing tissue at their eyes today at our Memorial Day service at the W. NC Veterans Cemetery. One of the speakers was Anne Atkins, who is a Gold Star Mother (Iraq). She told a hard story of what the loss of her son, and aftermath meant. Lot of weeping folk, just from listening to her experience.

119 Dad was a Marine and served in Korea during the war. He never would speak about Korea and he never ate rice (because he saw how it was fertilized in Korea).

After Dad passed, we discovered from his discharge papers that he was one of the 500 Marines at the Frozen Chosun. All we knew about his experience was that he worked diligently to avoid frostbite.

I think (not certain) that a Vietnamese girl's design was the one selected for the memorial, and some were offended that a person from the area of conflict was chosen over a native born American citizen. Then when it was built, the simplicity at first blush seemed insulting to the memories of those lost. But once people actually went to it and began reading names...it was a gut punch of emotions. And they seemed to agree that yes, it was a perfect monument to those men and women.

122 As a young LT in bomb squad school, we had HBO in the BOQ, and I watched Gardens of Stone. Perhaps because of where I was and my age, but I bawled my eyes out.

More recently, I watched Last Flag Flying. Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne. Not exactly a movie about heroes but in a lot of ways very real. Also made me bawl my eyes out.

years ago, we were headed to visit relatives in Nebraska at this time of year, and we drove across the east half of Kansas on the way. Lots of beautiful green, seemingly endless, farmland. We came up to one small town - didn't even notice the name - and as with all such towns, there was a small shady cemetery on the outskirts. It was still morning, and as we drove by, I noticed a pickup parked on the grounds, and an older gentleman sitting in a lawn chair under a tree next to one of the graves, all by himself.

to me, that image has always been what Memorial Day is all about.

128 My Grandaddy served in WW II, the Korean War and Vietnam. My grandfather on my mother’s side, who had a silly nickname, served in WW II. He met my grandmother when they liberated France, later going back to get her, my mother and my Aunt to bring to the US. I noted earlier my Grandaddy had a silver star and Purple Heart. We never knew until he died. He never spoke of it.

144 When my father died 8 years ago at age 86, it was on Memorial Day (and his remains are in a wall at Arlington). That date, May 25, 2015, was last Thursday and I did drink a shot of scotch in his honor, but given that we both served (him - navy, me army), I've come to think of him on the actual Memorial Day as well as the day he passed.

To all who lost their lives serving in the cause of freedom from tyranny and injustice, I salute you.

147 Sometimes when they come home they don't quite make it. My mom's stepfather adopted her and her sister when he married my grandmother before WWII. From what my mom said they were very happy. He enlisted in the navy, and was crew on an LST, I think, that was part of the battle of Leyte Gulf (I think it was). He was wounded badly enough he was evacuated back to California. When he did come home for good he was an alcoholic, and soon after they divorced, but the damage didn't stop with them.

I went to our Memorial Day Parade today along with a large number of my fellow town folks, from old timers to kids.

We honored service members from the Korean War through Afghanistan who attended the ceremony. The featured speaker was a Vietnam veteran who lost his legs in the war and is fixture here in town. The entire event from start to finish was beautiful and all about honoring those who served and the sacrifices they made.

Service members are anything but throw away here, they are celebrated and honored.

I'm really torn on this. On the one hand, my nationalistic tendencies say that Russia sucks and such foreign untermensch perfidy must not be tolerated. But on the other hand, my pragmatic tendencies say that Miss Lindsey is being a monumental pain in the ass, and like the basketball lady, basically walked right into it by being an asshole. And while I'm an America First sort of guy I am--perhaps *because* I am an America First sort of guy--somewhat ambivalent about US citizens that knowingly insert themselves in foreign affairs and then get burned, like the story of the guy who coats himself in honey and goes frolicking in the woods coming to the bad end.

This was around the time that everyone knew we were leaving--the soda choices were narrowing, the desserts in the icebox-cases ("Happy Birthday U.S. Navy" cakes) were hardening, AQI was concentrating on killing Coptic Christians (and others) instead of launching mortars at FOB Marez.

The base I worked at (Camp Baldwin, Joel E. Baldwin, USN, RIP 2005, Mosul Iraq) had photos of men who had died mounted on the plywood walls of the shack we worked in. These were not young men; they usually had children and wives--in their thirties due to their line of work. The interior walls of the shack were painted black; we worked within trying to locate and track "MEMS" (middle-eastern males) who were bedding down, to go to their houses and arrest them (if they'd be arrested; not all would).

I remember the plaques of those men on the plywood wall of that shack in Mosul, Iraq. Good men. Rest In Peace.

178 On my father's side of the family, there were 4 uncles and 2 aunts. Some uncles and an aunt were born in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, with my Grandmother bringing herself and the little ones here right as The Balkan Wars started heating up, around 1910-11. My Dad and a few of his siblings were born here in the States, a mixed family if you will.

In WWII, all five brothers served in various branches. My Dad enlisted well before our entry into the war, in 1940. I know one uncle was in the Army at Hickam Field on 12/7/41. One, because of his multiple language fluency, was in Army intelligence. They all survived the war. In the little podunk Appalachian town where they were from there was one of those metal road markers that listed all those from the area who served. Some had a faded bronze star next to their names; they didn't come back. My Dad's and his four brothers' names were on that marker.

That little town is now dead as the 'business' area burned down and eventually fell in on itself, with only the elderly unable to move still living there. I hope someone saved that sign.

180 I used to live across the street from a guy who, if he wasn't the oldest living seabee had to be darn close. He died about 2009, aged 102. I didn't know him well, but towards the end of his life I took him something, and was amazed when he seemed so excited to see me, and was so happy to talk to me. After a minute I realized he thought I was a younger relative of his who hadn't come to see him in about 15 years, and I decided that the nicest thing I could do was to be whoever he wanted me to be. We had a real nice conversation.

Two men were clearing them when a one detonated wounding both gravely. McGee went to their aid and managed to bring one man out safely. But while going for the second man, Pvt McGee stepped on a mine himself. Bleeding profusely from his wounds, McGee ordered that no one risk their lives to enter the minefield and render him first aid. So on the banks of the Moselle River on 19 Mar 1945 William D. McGee died from his wounds while displaying uncommon courage and concern for his fellow soldiers.

The problem is that we did not really set a goal for what was a successful conclusion. Democratic elections? We got that in both Iraq and Afghanistan quite a while back.

One could also argue that Ukraine is going along the model of just supporting one side without our boots on the ground. How is that going?

I am not arguing for a more muscular or personal investment in Ukraine, I am saying we are failing once again because we are taking the choice offered and still have no actual plan.

I'm going to be an embedded systems programmer for a major manufacturing company. Instead of helping build the world's fastest computers, I'll be helping people drill for oil.

I swear this layoff thing is worse than the divorce. At least with the divorce I could take a couple of years to get used to the new situation. No more working on network devices, so the work has to be on-site. New company, new commute, new problems to solve, new cow-orkers and all that. I haven't had change this big since 2010.

IMO the problem is more that the American people have no dog in that fight... and know it.

Washington will fail them... as it did Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Korea, and Viet Nam.

215 Well, we made it through another Memorial Day. This time Pooky asked a question that's been bothering him for awhile: "If I had succeeded (at the suicide), would people remember me as an a**hole?" The people he knew that died were from suicide, sometimes by cop, and his career field was filled with... not nice people.

I replied that he'd be mourned as a son, husband and father; and reminded him that his unit tried to support him despite his superintendent's interference, and his commander moved heaven and earth to get him an Honorable Discharge. I hope I got through to him, his brain has been breaking in new and interesting ways lately.
