Kitten discovering her own feet.

Boing boing boing boing...

A very happy young fox prances about.

Fox kit wants some Mommy Time.

As does this little chimp.

Duncanthrax, you'll be interested to know this: Bats only choose a single mate their entire lives.

A swarm of flightless sea-bats and their cubs.

Horse playing soccer.

Attentive dog vs. inattentive dog.

Cat Evel Knieval.

Yeah, usually they were buried at sea (wrapped in cloth, stitch through the nose to make sure they are really dead, roundshot at their feet to make sure they sink). But Nelson was such a vast hero at that point they wanted him to be buried in state and get that big pillar in Trafalgar Square.

I have a very specific recollection from my college years; passed out and sleeping through a mild hangover on my couch, of course:

I wish I could tell you that only happened once.

I think "corn dodgers are just well fried balls of cornbread, they''ll last a while but not forever. I think I saw a picture of a piece of hardtack in a museum that's over 2 centuries old, and it's slightly moldy but otherwise still the same.

another fun fact of frontier life - early 19th century bacon was nothing at all like what we think of as bacon today. Usually it would come in a slab/cube that could weigh 300 - 400 pounds, heavily cured and it would last forever. They would carve slices off of it to eat it, probably why we now know bacon as thin strips. Just about every covered wagon going west had one of these in the back.

214 What Townsend is that most ship's biscuits and hardtack were commercially made. It has to be done a particular way so it doesn't break and so thst bugs can't penetrate it.

No, it's a prepared bread. Think communion bread from ten years ago and you're probably close.

217 An unidentified man on Friday beat up two elderly pro-life activists in front of a North Baltimore Planned Parenthood clinic, sending one to the hospital.

Surveillance footage shows a man approaching a protester and "speaking in an aggressive manner," local ABC affiliate WMAR2 reported. The suspect then rushed at the protester, tackled him, and shoved a second protester to the ground.

First they came for the Pro-Life Old People.

The cool part is I'm assuming that's not much of a crime, while if the elderly person had stood too close to the entrance or spoken to someone entering (much less rushed, shoved, and tackled someone) then the special "It happened within sight distance of an abortion clinic" law would kick in and they'd serve years.

222 uncomfortable (for us) truth of the past - people were used to eating a whole lot of real gamy meat. You only got fresh meat if you killed it yourself or you were rich. I remember realizing that in some small town in Mexico many years ago, when I tried to eat the local food without covering it with chili sauce. Suddenly I had enlightenment - "oh so THAT'S why they dump so much hot chili sauce on everything! To kill the taste of the meat!!!" Same thing's happened in every hot place in the world.

Benny is overselling the Target climbdown. No news here. The internal web page he blasted out this afternoon is dated from last Thursday (25th). Everyone already knew Target was directing southern and more rural stores to move things around. There's nothing to suggest a more significant shift post-Memorial Day.

229 Hardback is twice baked. The French army would buy it from commercial bakers who would do the first bake when they were heating the ovens in the morning and then do the second bake when the ovens were cooling down in the afternoon. Hard tack is unleavened. If it is leavened and baked twice it is called a rusk
