Tech News

  • The Snapdragon 8cx gen 4 is 32% faster than Apple's M4, at least on one benchmark. (WCCFTech)

Of course, neither chip is out yet, so take that with a sack of salt.

But it does look like the commodity Arm market is finally shaking off the dust and competing seriously with Intel and AMD for laptop parts.

  • Meanwhile Arm announced an entire family of new cores, with 40% better performance, making them 15% faster. (AnandTech)

The catch there is that mobile chips come with a mix of fast, power-hungry cores, and slower more efficient cores. It's the slower cores that are 40% faster, and the faster cores are only 15% faster. That fast core - the Cortex X4 - is alternatively 40% more efficient for the same performance, but expect phone manufacturers to take the 15% and sacrifice your battery.

But the mid-tier and low-end A720 and A520 cores are both faster and more efficient, so if you're in the market for a $500 phone - or a $250 one - rather than a $1000 model, things look a bit brighter.

19 G'day all.

McCarthy, who pulled a coalition together to become speaker on the promise that he would get rid of those 87,000 new IRS agents, well, not so much in practice. The new debt ceiling deal he cut with Biden defunds the IRS from $80 billion down to a grand total of $78 billion. That works out to only 84,000 IRS agents to come after you. Then he cut a deal on the budget ceiling that lasts for 2 years, past the presidential election season so it doesn't become an issue, and only adds another four trillion dollars to the debt. After that it's Katie bar of the door. And from what I can piece together from my reading is the green new deal stuff didn't get touched at all. Your Republican leadership at it's finest. I'm hoping these early reviews of this cocked up mess are wildly inaccurate.

23 I got up partly because, once I stumbled out to get some water from the fridge, I realized the monsters had no dry food. Yours truly forgot to put some down last night. Once I'd done that, I tried going back to sleep. No hope. So, the tail end of an early Mission: Impossible with my coffee, and now a couple of late-run episodes of Last Man Standing before I go to work out.

I tell myself this is not any later than I *usually* rise on Mondays.

49 I'll try asking about KBON again later... I'm too tired now.

KBON sounds like my type of radio station. From Wikipedia: "KBON is a radio station broadcasting an Americana format, deeply rooted in the music of south Louisiana, including swamp pop, zydeco, and cajun-French music mixed in with some traditional oldies, country-western, and R&B music."

I saw Trayon Benoit's band at the Silver City, NM blues festival on Saturday. The Benoits are some very fine Louisiana musicians.

88 Pixy, wasn't there a button you could push on those monitors to make everything funky for a split second? But then it had to charge again.Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain

The button was called a degaussing button. Turning the monitor off and on would accomplish the same thing which was to to remove a built-up magnetic field which would distort the image on the CRT screen if I recall correctly?.

176 It's interesting to watch the early episodes of almost anything, but especially comedies, to see what worked from the beginning, what was dropped, which characters were highlighted over the years.

Yay- another way to waste time on streaming video!

U.N.C.L.E. in its first year, when its creator Sam Rolfe was in charge, was more plausible and we saw better how the organization might work and when it would be needed. Bewitched was more about the love between Darrin and Samantha and less about someone being turned into a turtle. Trek was more about Kirk having to make a decision.

177 I think the ban on pedestrian cussing in the content is a net positive. It's led directly to some mellifluous turns of phrase without which the world would be a far inferior place. Sort of like how the strictures of meter lead a poet to grander heights of expression than prose is capable of.

I like it in the pouch, but I've learned to air-dry most tobaccos for a quarter hour or more on a saucer. If they're too moist, the heat produces steam, and that leads to "tongue bite." Since I've been doing that and sipping at the smoke as well, my pipe times are much cooler and more enjoyable.

Six months ago I lost my job and after that I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a great website which literally saved me. I started working for them online and in a short time after I've started averaging 15k a month... The best thing was that cause I am not that computer savvy all I needed was some basic typing skills and internet access to start.
AND GOOD LUCK.
