Gun Thread: Memorial Day Weekend Edition!

TOU 052823 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Please take a moment to remember those who have given their lives in military service to the United States and show your gratitude by living your days as someone worthy of their sacrifice.

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the end of May? Know what that means? I say, do you know what that means? Why it means June is next, and with June comes the NoVAMoMe on the 9th and 10th. That's right, the social and cultural event of the season, the 2023 NoVAMoMe is now less than two weeks away! If you haven't registered, do not despair. There is still time to sign-up and spend a day with your friends. Specifics on how to get more information can be found below, and there is always a helpful email link on the main page left sidebar. Remember, the deadline to register and make payment is midnight May 31st so do not delay. We have to guarantee the number of attendees, so after that date, there are no additions or refunds. Please note mug sales closed on May 20th, so while you may be mug-less, you can still attend. Register today!

Psssst! Something else you will note on the main page; the dates for the 2023 TXMoMe have been added. More on this fabulous and frankly life-changing event coming soon.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

2023 NoVAMoMe Reminder

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer.

Thanks.
Posted by: bluebell - NoVaMoMe registration now open!

Nothing complicated, people. Just let bluebell know you're a regular and not an imposter by using the secret handshake and related gang-signs. Lastly, don't forget, there is a meetup for the airing of grievances on Friday afternoon and evening, then the main NoVAMoMe on Saturday, and the opportunity to do some shooting on Sunday (separate registration required). Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

New! for 2023, the Moron Gun Club, Northern Virginia Chapter has organized a group shooting event at a local range in Virginia on Sunday the day after the official NoVAMoMe. There is only ONE slot left, so do not delay in contacting Sharon(wa) if you're interested. Details below:

The DMV MGC has made a reservation at our range to host a group of no more than 15 people in their party room on 6/11, the Sunday after the MoMe. This consists of 3 15 yd lanes and totally for our use only. We will have the lanes starting at 1:30 but will be asking people to arrive at 1 so we don't waste lane time getting organized and you will have to go through the safety briefing. There was a pretty significant fee so we need to charge $20 but there are no additional fees unless you want to buy ammo or rent a gun. Handguns only. We will have our personal arsenals (some much larger than others) so if you are weaponless that is not a problem. We only have ONE slot left so if you are interested, email Blaster at this address Novamomeshoot@proton.me.

The range is in Virginia so little more flexible if you are carrying. Once you have a spot, we will send you a link to fill out the guest form and sign the waivers so we don't waste time at the range getting people checked in. This way you just have to show ID.

Couple of caveats: a) you must attend the NoVAMoMe ($20 cash due at the MoMe), and 2) this is not part of the official MoMe. After the range meetup, we will head to our favorite restaurant for dinner. Separate checks.

Guns of the Horde
First up, our pal Ed L sends in this beauty for us all to enjoy.

052823 edl scaled 0.JPG

052823 edl scaled 1.JPG

At first glance, this pistol looks like any other Beretta 92FS pistol. Tens of thousands of these have been produced. But this example is a very rare variant for the civilian market. It's a US military issue M9 pistol.

052823 edl scaled 2.JPG

052823 edl scaled 3.JPG

Beretta has produced commemorative pistols that duplicated the M9's military markings, but the serial number definitively confirms this example as a genuine M9. M9 pistol serial numbers started at 1000001. This serial number, 1001851, shows that this pistol was the 1,851st pistol delivered to the military by Beretta.

052823 edl scaled 4.jpg

052823 edl scaled 5.jpg

The US military has not yet declared M9 pistols surplus. But one small group of people have been able to obtain M9 pistols out of military stocks. These are retired flag officers (generals and admirals), who have the option to purchase their sidearms upon retirement from active duty. This M9 pistol was the issued sidearm of Major General Bernard L. Weiss, USAF. He purchased the pistol upon his retirement from the USAF in 1988. As the commander of the USAF Contract Management Division from 1985-1988, he was certainly heavily involved in the M9 program. His selection of a brand new M9 as his sidearm is not surprising. You can see here his official photo (as a Brigadier General) and a copy of the Cash Collection Voucher used to pay for his sidearm upon his retirement. Later flag officer sidearms would have presentation grips and their own special serial number range, making this M9 a rare, unaltered original example.

052823 edl scaled 6.jpg

This M9 comes with the full rig, including the USAF general officer's belt, black leather M12 Bianchi holster, and matching black leather magazine pouch. Major General Weiss' two-star flag is also part of the package.

Wow! Very nice, Ed L! Amazing provenance. Thanks for sending this in!

Next, a follow-up to last week's Gun Thread featuring a Lee-Enfield Rifle No. 5 Mk. 1, from our pal Scampydog.

052823 scampydog.jpg

A few days ago I considered sending the attached pic. But I'm rarely around on Sundays, and thought if I can't participate in the thread - don't send a pic. Regardless, it was both cool and ironic to see your write up this evening.

Nice looking example of the Jungle Carbine, Scampydog, how does it shoot? Oh, and submissions are always welcome! Thank you!

Range Time!
Next, our pal RedMindBlueState shares a picture from a range trip past.

052823 RMBS scaled.jpg

This is a pic of a target I fired some mumblemumble years ago with the Model 70 and some handloads my dad worked up for it. No rear bag, nothing special. Just a good day on the range. For a non-custom rifle, it'll shoot pretty well if the operator is properly switched on. Six shots at 100 yds. Just ignore that one flyer.

Nice shooting, RMBS! Thank you!

Worth Watching
Your ol' pal Weasel is a sucker for restoration videos of mechanical things, and this one is a real doozy!

It's not too long so let me know what you think in the comments. Would you have attempted to restore the gun? Would you have tried firing it afterward?

NoVAMoMe 2023

052823 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Not so fast on the gun stuff, buckaroos! We have a little bit more on the NoVAMoMe to discuss. In fact, this will be the first of a long and seemingly endless series of reminders to get yo' big butt off the couch and come out and meet some of your online friends. Let's kick things off with a few NoVAMoMe FAQ.

Q: Is it fun?
A: Yes. Just ask anyone who has been to one. You will have fun, or else.

Q: When is it again? Did you say June?
A: Yes. A thousand times yes! June 10th, from 1pm til 6pm or so.

Q: I'm sort of a dork. Can I just slink-in, watch for a bit and then slink out without having to actually speak with anyone?
A: Yes. In fact, we have strategically placed large potted ferns for lurkers to hide behind.

Q: Will bluebell be there? I really want to meet bluebell.
A: Of course! Well, assuming things go well at the parole hearing.

Q: Is there food and drink?
A: Yes! $30 for a bigly buffet, and a cash bar. We had to bump up the food price a bit to cover costs this year.

Q: Can I make references, even veiled references to the secret MoMe location on the blog?
A: NO! Seriously, please don't.

Q: Sounds great, Weasel! How do I sign up?
A: We have an online page for registration. Email novamome@protonmail.com for all the details!

OK, I'm talking to YOU Mr. or Ms. I'll Go Next Time. Guess what? The next time is here. It's a really fun event and we would love to have you join us. Hopefully some NoVAMoMe veterans will speak up in the comments and encourage the introverts to stop being big baby chickens and make this the year to come out of the shadows!

Cigar of the Week

This week I have a review of two cigars from Nick's Cigar World, a cigar shop I like and use online regularly.

CASA-GARCIA maduro 052823 scaled.jpg
Terrible cigar at any price

First, the Casa de Garcia Maduro available atfor $32 per bundle of 20. Casa de Crapola is more like it.

WeaselReview: Complete waste of dinero. More awful than bad. Bad simply implies a matter of taste, and these are terrible in every respect, both objectively and subjectively. Do not buy. Atrocious construction and you'll suck your eyeballs into the back of your head trying to get this turd to draw. Zero stars, and at FREE these would be overpriced. Recommend only to people you hate.

***

Moving along...
quorum-mad 052823 scaled.jpg
Pretty decent $2 cigar

Next we have a slightly pricier option, the Quorum Maduro Robusto at $38 per bundle of 20, which are actually quite decent and worth every bit of $2 each. You're not going to find these on Cigar Aficianado with a 120 rating, but hey, they're two bucks.

I like finding decent bundled cigars around $2 a pop which are my farming chores and mowing-the-grass cigars. I absolutely recommend the Quorum Maduro Robusto. Decent construction, burn and taste, and won't break the bank!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

15 Big news on the ATF pistol brace over-reach front.

"On May 19, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted an Injunction Pending Appeal in the case. The court’s order stated, “It is ordered that the appeal is expedited to the next available Oral Argument Calendar. It is further ordered that Appellants’ Opposed Motion For a Preliminary Injunction Pending Appeal is granted as to the Plaintiffs in this case.”

While the order seems to mean that the law does not now apply to only the plaintiffs in the case—two gun owners, a company that makes pistols with stabilizing braces and the FPC—the organization is seeking further guidance on that matter."

Here's the fun part, though. Apparently the FPC wrote to ask for clarification of who it covered, and they were told the plaintiffs, the company, and FPC members. But without a back-date. So FPC membership skyrocketed (which it should've anyway since they're effectively fighting)

But that's hilarious.

24 The .45 reminds me of one my first battery commander found at Ft Bragg back in the '60s. He was on a field exercise and sat down to eat his C's. He was looking around and saw this moss covered thing hanging on a limb of a nearby tree. He checked it out and it was a M1911 in .38 cal in its holster and web belt. They investigated and figured it was a weapon someone like him, taking a break, took off and hung on the tree and forgot. Probably from the 30s.
He was allowed to keep it.

He is in hospice care with maybe 2 months at the outside left. Any morons in the east Tennessee area should give me a shout if you'd like to peruse the collection. Nothing special, mostly older milsurp bolt actions. All proceeds go to his estate.

75 Okay, that works, Weasel.
So, scoobs. After the regular aspirin shoot today (at which I sucked - but was not last), the match director added a fifth stage. 50 yards, 10 shots, 30 seconds. You must hit the right side of a slightly loosened water bottle top and spin it off.
I shot first, spun it on the 9th shot. Only other shooter out of 8 to spin it, did it in 3 shots. But he shot though the top, I only nicked it.
Still, 3 shots wins. But it made up for 0 out of 10 Tums.

Don't look now, but that's part of the ATF's pistol brace plan.

And folks aren't talking about it, but the SBR designation adds not only administrative hurdles but $200 to the cost of the pistol when selling it, most of which aren't high-priced guns to begin with. The market won't exist.

92 You may know where the switches are in an RS-71 but without the support equipment and special jet fuel, good luck starting it.

The engine starter might be the easiest thing to acquire, you just need to mate two Chevy V-8 engines. You might even be able to recreate the computers that controlled all the intake plumbing and routing of the air.

But the JP-7 with the special additives and accompanying KC-135Q will be the real mission killer.

If you're serious about dipping more than a couple of toes in the world of collectable firearms, I recommend getting books on the ones that interest you. These references will pay for themselves many times over.

Some desirable firearms have zoomed up in price faster than tech stocks in the lead up to the Dot-Com bubble. Colt Marine pistols surplused by the USMC and Colt were going for $5k when they first hit the market in 2018. Today, they're in the $9-10k range.

Fortunately, our Rep is in a safe R district, so he had no trouble doing so.

The blue states are going to be even tougher to practise your 2A rights. 'Ghost guns', 'Assault weapons' etc. etc., all the lefty bugaboos were covered in the bill as well.

112 A good buddy texted me and thanked me for my service today - I texted back "Thank you! But I'm not dead yet!"

I was talking to the kids about it and asking some questions to see if they understood, and the oldest said it was a day to celebrate the service members who had died- and then she caught herself and felt bad. But we talked a little more, and we realized it was sort of a celebration in its own way. A somber one, but kind of a form of celebration nonetheless. The realization that men would do that for us calls for the living, non-serving members of society to recognize the dead would do that for us in a way beyond just remembering that they did.

Not celebrating, and not celebrating their deaths, but honoring through a quiet, humble awe that there are men that would, and did, die for me and my family.

Actually I have been thinking a bundle/budget cigar review would be handy, and here you've done one. Haven't had a Quorum in a long time, used to buy their bundles (habano, or original, I think). There were always good for "golf cigars".

Maybe it's the penny-pinching reloader in me, but it's a game to get my regular sticks at lowest possible price, and actually with sales and specials and what-not I often mange to get 'em for close to bundle prices (under $4, often well under). Only rarely do I take out the pry bar, open my wallet, and spend $$, and only for "special occasion" cigars.

Yikes! Do you have any idea what the source of the moisture is? You really might want to solve that before anything else.

(I have used a large mechanical dehumidifier when my hot water tank leaked. But you have to empty the tub or find a way to run a hose out - in a basement that will be hard. It also tends to raise the temp in the area.)

141 The lever action '92 carbine is a 'cowboy gun', so it doesn't have the stigma that 'evil black rifles' carry. Yet it will hold 10 rounds of .357 mag, has a reasonable rate of fire, is quick enough to reload through the side port, and given .357 ballistics in a 16 inch barrel, you won't have to shoot most anything twice. The only disadvantage is the difficulty of mounting an optic.
Plus, you can legitimately shout "Fill yer hands, you sonsawitches!"

It calls for us - veterans and not - to live in a way to make their sacrifice worthy. And, yes, it is a celebration - not that they died, but that such men lived.

As the fictional RAdm. George Tarrant said, "Where do we get such men?" The answer is that we grow them - and like any garden, if we neglect their fertilizer (faith, love of neighbor and of country, and charity) and the weeding, we get a crap garden in which nothing good grows.

Is your safe made by one of the major safe makers (Liberty, Fort Knox, etc.)? If so, it could be retrofitted with the proper accessories from the OEM. You'll have to talk w/ a local dealer about your requirements.

The fact that your basement is unheated and unconditioned is a major part of the problem. At a minimum, you'll have run power to the safe to operate an electrical dehumidifier in the summer months. If you have condensation problems in the winter, freeze-thaw action can hurt your safe's locking mechanisms. Best solution (if possible) is to get the safe and its contents inside your house where your home's HVAC helps fight Mother Nature's attacks on the safe and its contents.

First World Problem.

Put it into it's own room (2x4, insulation, gyp board are relatively cheap), vapor barrier / sealed fllor and walls. Put a small dehumidifyer in the room set to max. Insatll small condesate pump so you don't have to empty the bucket twice a day.
Might even ditch the safe and just put a heavy commercial sttel door on the little room.

I'll spare you the nitty gritty and end up with the CZ winning in accuracy with iron sights. The P-07 does have a heavy, but smooth, DA trigger pull but at speed, you don't notice it. Or I don't.

So the P-07 is back as my EDC until I get new CR1632 batteries and maybe afterwards. It is a damn fine pistol, frankly.

That material is MUCH MORE hygroscopic than the silica pellets. That is why it must be in a bucket or tray, because it will literally weep moisture - even at very low room humidity levels.

215 National Atomic Testing Museum in Vegas also does bus trips out to the National Test Site, last time I checked, but gotta sign up early, they fill up fast. A friend recently visited Vegas and found a bar (liquor store?) that is "atomic-themed", old downtown Vegas. Back in the day they used to have people watch tests from the roof, I think. Always felt lucky being exposed to so much military hardware and operations where I grew up, but being able to *watch* a nuke shot - while sipping a cold one - now that's a whole different level.

Many WWI (and pre-WWI) M1911 pistols that went through arsenal or depot rebuilds over the years wound up w/ M1911A1 spare parts (mainspring housing, sights, barrel, trigger, etc.) after they were returned to service, especially for rebuilds done post-WWII. I've seen M1911 frames that were still in service as late as 2012 w/ 5th SFG in Afghanistan that had a mishmash of pre- and post-WWII GI parts mixed w/ 1980s-1990s commercial slides. The ordinance workers/soldiers doing the rebuilds didn't care about whether a part was period correct; all that mattered was whether the pistol still worked.

218 @55 We had a family friend, Marine, ex-motorcycle cop, who was a serious collector. He didn't just have safes; he had a safe ROOM. When he found out he had something that would get him eventually, he had a friend with a shop do an invitation-only sale to "good home" acquaintances. I'd have kinda-sorta liked to buy everything he owned, but that would have been a lifetime investment. The upshot was that I spent a lot of money -- the most I spent on anything, that year -- and we obtained several of our very favorite pieces, as did a dozen or so other friends of his.

The happy part, was that the guy knew where all his collection was going. He left some to his closest relatives, and had a real sense of satisfaction knowing that everything else was in the hands of friends, who would remember him whenever they got them out. And we do, too.

I think, given the work involved, I would in the end engrave the frame and slide. There's a lot of work going into that restoration, and it seems like a nice bit of engraving would cover over some of the pitting and give it back its pride.

Oh, and anytime it was carried or taken to the range, I would require a picture of it in its wounded state be carried along with it.

Parts interchangability was a VERY big deal to US Army Ordinance in the 20th century. One of the reasons why it took so long for Remington Rand and Ithaca to come on line w/ M1911A1 production in WWII was because the first pistols from these new suppliers kept flunking the interchangability tests the Army mandated (a Colt pistol's parts having 100% interchangability w/ a pistol from Remington Rand and Ithaca)

243 I also endorse Damp-Rid, for use inside enclosed areas. If water is able to find its way into your basement, you should deal with that "for other reasons," of course, but there are mini-Damp-Rid packets (with a plastic bag to hold the drippings) that you can hang inside the safe. You'll have to change them, but they do really work. The more moisture-tight you can make the safe, the drier it will stay in there, so close up any vents and consider foam tape for where the door closes.

246 "Every child", similar situation here. I have a Quality Hardware 1943 mixmaster (with, oddly I think, the push-button safety, still). Also have a reproduction - an Auto Ordnance (patterned on the 1942 Inland from the NRA Museum, I think I recall reading). So it has the push-button safety, flip sights, and Type 1 barrel band (no bayonet lug).

I shoot the Quality Hardware in action rifle matches (and to your point, last week, in the last stage - short range - I pushed one of the younger guys who was admiring it to use it instead of whatever black plastic thingamabob he was using in the match .... he did, and loved it).

Otherwise I shoot the repro. Boss loves it, and shoots it well (of course, it's a very easy and natural little rifle to shoot accurately).

AO had some quality issues in the early days, or so I read, but mine's been perfect. In theory the parts are not USGI, but I haven't replaced anything yet, so no issue for me as yet. Beautiful walnut stock I've put BLO on every other year, now it's got a rich deep color.

So, AFAIK, Auto Ordnance (now Kahr) is an option. Someone bought the Inland name and makes new M1s - supposed to be high-quality. Haven't paid attention in a while, there may be other new players as well. Repros are $$, but of course far less than real ones, which have really become exorbitant.

I have long allowed/encouraged people at the range who take an interest in either M1 (Garand or carbine) to shoot 'em. 100% smile results to date. I also proselytize a bit, push people to check out CMP if they're serious (for the Garand), and not to wait.

By far, the rifles that attract the most interest at the range.

The Taurus has a frame mounted safety and no decocker. Later model Taurus PT 92 had poorly mounted dovetail safeties (older models had fixed, non adjustable sights but the fuckers would not break on a bet).

Otherwise, they're pretty much the same mechanically and as accurate/reliable.

Please make sure that you don't shoot hot ammo (i.e. +P or +P+ rounds) in older firearms. The steel of yesteryear (i.e. pre-1950s) wasn't as strong as today's. Hot ammo in older firearms will increase wear on their operating parts and the frame.

259 @231 Parts interchangeability was a VERY big deal to US Army Ordinance

A historian named Pat Malone won the Norton prize in industrial history for a paper that used an electron microscope to analyze the file marks on Model 1809 muskets at the Springfield (Mass) Armory. Assembly line systems were first known as "Armory Practice." The army was not interested in saving money, but in field-expedient parts exchange on the battlefield.

As it worked out (in the first couple of generations), more hand work was performed on matching-parts firearms than had previously gone into one-off artisan guns. All the Henry Ford business came later.

You might want to replace any WWII vintage magazines w/ modern ones. The WWII magazines are themselves becoming collector's items. Modern magazines also don't have 80 years of age, wear, and tear on them either.

275 Thanks rhomboid, I'll take a look. And thanks Ed L., yeah, I've been very careful with what I put through it. A local shop with a WWII weapons enthusiast running things stocks and recommended Prvi Partisan (sp?) and so far they've been fantastic. I've been hanging onto the brass because $25+/box convinced me that reloading is a good decision.

281 Thanks for the tip, Schnorflepuppy...

I suppose I'll leave my carbine to someone when I pass, but I've told everyone that offered to buy my Garand they just need to show up at my funeral - with a shovel.
Both are fun to shoot, and I'll continue to do so, idiotic or not.

Posted by: radar at May 28, 2023 08:51 PM (YhPao)

282 Ed L, actually I have only modern M1 carbine mags, but will never again pass up any new/old stock surplus ones, like those in wax paper I saw in a gun store in Reno a few years ago, when I'm out of state and buying. Not that I would do that, since it's against the rules or something. Nope, never even considered it.

What are we even talking about?

And while both rifles have a fairly narrow prescribed range of charges for the ammo, in order to operate them, I do load at the lowest level that provides acceptable results (but I do that for all my reloading).

With the Garand one could, I suppose, go to softer loads using an adjustable gas plug (gas cylinder lock), but most wear-able parts for that rifle are readily available, including new production versions.

It's funny you would mention that. The purchase didn't include any magazines (got it from Midway), and a few months later an opportunity to buy an unissued in-the-paper IBM magazine came up. I bit, of course. Hopefully whats in the paper is what is supposed to be there. If not no big deal because it will be interesting, too.

I’m not for the same reason I’m not boycotting AB. I wasn’t a customer in the first place. In the HK case, not because I wouldn’t like to be. They did respond quickly and correctly even if it wasn’t as strongly as some people seem to want to give them credit for. For example, some are saying that the social media chick was fired. HK never actually said that.

Excellent trigger, and those little wings on the slide are something I thought we'd see on other models by now. Only downside IMO is mags are expensive.

The VP9 is a fine pistol, just don't submerge it in water. Hydrolock.

Boycotting is a very personal thing, so I won't advise one way or another but I'll note that H&K doesn't care much about the US civilian market. But just about every major gun company has treated us badly, from S&W to Ruger to Colt, at one time or another.

Keep in mind that the early M1911's were rated for a life of only 6,000 rounds. That's not much by today's standards 100 years on, but that was a long time back then. Pistols were used more heavily back then; the pistol was the primary arm of the US Cavalry, which put in lots of time on the range, both mounted and dismounted. Wartime service would have only accelerated the process.
In 1980, just prior to the start of the M9 program, the US Army surveyed its M1911 holdings. The Army found that each pistol on hand had been rebuilt at least three times, some six or more. This was one reason why the M1911 got replaced by the M9; the pistols themselves were wearing out fast.

Correct on both counts but I think the compatibility with 9mm pistols is a very very minor positive reason to change from .45 . At the time they didn't have the SF model but if it was a requirement they could have resolved that issue. The Beretta ain't much smaller.

Go ahead and shoot the M1 Carbine. I would however get an ammo check gauge for it. The only really destructive thing you can do to an M1 Carbine is to have an out of battery cartridge ignition. There is a reason that you need to be in the habit of bumping the operating slide handle after loading a new magazine.

It's not that small, and steel framed, so quite manageable, IMO. I liked the grip a lot, but one day thought what the heck, and started playing with the grip components. You get S, M, and L components for the front strap, back strap, and sides, that you can mix and match. The combo I thought would be the worst (L sides, S straps) was like, "Wow!". The paratrooper models command a big premium right now. Those prices are for WWII era models only. The remakes from the 1960s and 1970s go for a lot less.

350 5 different brands of .45ACP, all 1911 types except G21. All suitable for the task at hand.

351 If you turn that gun in, get a receipt.
Posted by: Every child. . . .

Word. My 1911 was seized as evidence after my late wife used it to get herself to a better place. I was not presented with a receipt for any materials removed from my home that day. Honestly, I was in no shape to remember to ask for one. Anyway, after the investigation was closed, I played hell getting my property back. Eventually, I (informally) asked a acquaintance judge to look into it.

Shortly thereafter, miracle of miracles, most of my items were returned. I had to get a real court order, however, to compel the PD to reimburse me for the items lost and/or destroyed that somehow disappeared. The judge determined what was missing from the evidence check in sheet that did not exist when I originally asked for it.

352 $2-3k for an M1 Carbine? I think I paid $800 for mine. Holy crap. I need to update my inventory values.
Posted by: Weasel at May 28, 2023 09:11 PM (RG6z4)

I got my Inland through CMP when they had them (briefly) available some years ago. I don't recall exactly, but I think they were around $800. I purchased a repro M1 carbine (all GI parts except for the receiver) manufactured by IAI (Israeli Arms Industries) about 25 years ago for around $600. I don't think they make them anymore.

Posted by: That Deplorable SOB Van Owen at May 28, 2023 09:26 PM (PWe8a)

353 Been a while since I checked carbine prices. I assume "original condition" means USGI, not rifles that have never been re-arsenaled, or that have been "corrected" WRT parts? Even mixmasters (the great bulk of what's out there, at least last time I was in the game) have become quite expensive. Like Weasel, I got mine for $800 - years ago. I probably should get some spares for the parts that wear most quickly/most often, as I did for my big M1s when I got them.

But mine are all shooters, not too focused on re-sale value, so getting original parts not important. And there is modern production of most parts. The way things are going, I can shoot these all I like, and down the road sell them for Xtimes what I paid (in constant dollars). Better than renting for free!

354 Alley Butcher, as I recall the course of the guy's research, Spfld being a historical site had one hell of an archive, tools and paper, and he was even able to do "business case" work on their handwritten pay records. His big thrust was that matching-part assembly, often cited as the war of big manufacture against your "working classes," was in fact a boon to skilled craftsmen -- and he had the paychecks to back it up. What surprised me was that so many Model of 1809's were still in racks, waiting to be looked at real closely.

355 Good night all.
Thanks Weasel for giving us a place to gather and talk guns especially on weeks when we don;t get to actually shoot guns.

360 Lots of those here must deal with SARCO. Some of their rare surplus items seem a little pricey, it's true, but they have a dizzying array of parts for the M1 rifle and carbine, and unlike some famous old parts houses, they actually keep them in stock. My kid has a very special carbine that is near and dear, and around the holidays I went through their listings one weekend when they offered a discount, and bought one (1) each of every tiny li'l wear item, assembling a carbine survival kit of 20-some pieces for under a hundred bucks. Kid didn't need (yet) a single thing in the bag, but it was appreciated anyway.
