The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us. Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as well as our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountains is our song, our very own, and sings our love.
-- John Muir

Nature, red in tooth and claw
-- Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as he heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring, he felt compelled to turn his back upon the fire and the beaten earth around it, and to plunge into the forest, and on and on, he knew not where or why; nor did he wonder where or why, the call sounding imperiously, deep in the forest.
-- Jack London

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As long as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.
-- Anne Frank

That being said, there is something wonderful about wandering into a neighborhood bar on a cold, snowy, blustery night, opening the door to a blast of warm air and seeing friendly faces, engrossed in conversation or merely enjoying a respite from the chill. It can be the best that society has to offer, and a powerful incentive to enjoy humanity.

arisaka99.jpg

That's an Arisaka Type 99 rifle...the main battle rifle of the Japanese in WWII. I've got one of those, and it's even in better condition than the one in the photo! I fired it a long time ago, then put it away for no particular reason. But I have decided to put it through its paces again, so I bought some ammo, cleaned it, and in a few weeks will see whether it still shoots!

I find military weapons to be fascinating glimpses into military history, and the Arisaka is a good example of that. The conventional wisdom in the West was that it was an inferior rifle, made from inferior steel, and would be no match for Allied weapons.

Well, we were wrong. The Japanese conquered most of the Pacific, and that rifle performed very, very well. Tests on them revealed that it is both an immensely strong design, and that they were manufactured with excellent steel.

Most were made with a chrysanthemum (the symbol of the Emperor) engraved on the receiver. Most of those were ground off, either by the surrendering soldiers so as not to dishonor the Emperor, or by the occupation forces for unknown (to me) reasons.

At High School Debates, Debate Is No Longer Allowed

Before anything else, including being a debate judge, I am a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist. . . . I cannot check the revolutionary proletarian science at the door when I’m judging. . . . I will no longer evaluate and thus never vote for rightest capitalist-imperialist positions/arguments. . . . Examples of arguments of this nature are as follows: fascism good, capitalism good, imperialist war good, neoliberalism good, defenses of US or otherwise bourgeois nationalism, Zionism or normalizing Israel, colonialism good, US white fascist policing good, etc.

I don't mind the out-and-proud Marxist blather...there will always be profoundly stupid people. In fact, apocryphal Lenin had a term for them: "Useful Idiots."

No, what bothers me is that this harpy is allowed to get away with it in a supposedly scholarly, evenhanded setting. THAT'S why we are screwed.

66 the chrysanthemum was ground off captured Arisakas at first by order of some unit on bring-backs, and then as a general thing since no on actually knew what the regulation was or why they were following it.
For a while there was quite a demand to convert them to .300 Savage since that just required milling the chamber a wee bit.
It is not a fast action, but it is very sturdy and well made.
A lot of the belief that it was a poor rifle came from people running full power ammo through training rifles that were marked in Japanese "training rifle" that no one could read.
The "last ditch" rifles were crudely made, but they generally worked.

69 Hilarity at a Portland City council meeting right now.

Portland has been moving to the right politically (by Portland standards), and the City Council is about to approve a measure that homeless people can only pitch a tent at night - you have to tear your tent down during daytime.

Well, of course, this is worse than anything Adolph Hitler ever did, and the Council is currently taking public comment - two minutes per person. They've been taking public comment for over hour hours, and probably have another four hours to go.

An incredible collection of loons is testifying - the link goes to Portland Reddit, which is providing cynical play-by-play, but that link includes a link to the YouTube of the Council meeting itself, in case you want to see the best and brightest in America.

85 Nature has saved my sanity more times than I can count. There's something base and real about being in the mountains, out of cell phone range. No one is going to save your ass if you're stupid. There's bears and wolves and cougars. You're not the top of the food chain. But there's also moss hanging from the trees and ferns as big as a civic. And trees that seemingly try to invade heaven. There's waterfalls and creeks. And raging rivers and mountains that occasionally rumble to let you know they are alive as well. Hot springs bubble from the rocks and make pools of steaming water to rest your body. And your soul. The sound of the rain forest is at the same time deafening and silent. Check whether it has rifling and full lugs on the bolt before you fire it. There are training rifles (mentioned above) that absolutely cannot handle live rounds.

92 @Provocative, why would anyone run for Portland City Council anyway? I can't imagine a form of civic service that would be less rewarding for the time commitment.

Some people care about the city.

The one black commissioner, who is conservative by Portland standards, announced that he had to leave briefly to testify elsewhere, and one of the people in the crowd shouted "race traitor" at him as he left.

The crowd of protestors is almost entirely white, of course.

I was on my high school's debate team for my junior year. The topic was something like, "Resolved, that government should take necessary steps to control environmental pollution". My teammate and I had the affirmative case (we were for it). As I recall, we avoided the trap of seeking to alleviate ALL pollution in favor of alleviating MOST pollution. To assert that the whole exercise was mental and verbal masturbation was to give it far too much credit.

I was in a theater towards the back once and we heard this group of people towards the front groan loudly. a few seconds passed and a group closer to us moaned and said things like "oh god!" A few more seconds and then it was our turn - it was like this thick toxic cloud of stink that wasn't dissipating, it was just slowly traveling around the room, like some horrible beast.

158 A nit on the "engraving" of the chrysanthemum on the rifle. Really, any "crest" and most all of the lettering on any rifle, especially .mil surp gear.

It ain't engraved, but rather a pressed in Roll Mark into the steel. Including the serial number.

Yep, they make a super-hardened, negative___ die of the desired markings, and that is pressed into the receiver with great force. On the front receiver-ring, with a device that rolls the receiver ring under said die. The serial number dies have settable numbering wheels, just like a date marking rubber stamp. But, super hardened steel.

Applies to the markings on the slide of your Glock, and the frame and slide of your 1911, and frame of your S&W revolver.

Utterly changes the underlying crystalline structure of the steel, too. Which is why so often, a *ground off* serial number can be raised by an acid process. The number IS still there, deep into the steel.

The politics in Portland have started to shift significantly. The latest person elected to the city council shows signs of being an actual conservative, and I expect that the Soros DA will be overwhelmingly voted out of office next year.

182 WWI era, No. 1, Mk. 3 vary in bore size from about .311 up to .318. WWII era No. 4 Enfields run a bit tighter in the bore specs and unless badly worn should not exceed .314 and the Arisakas T99s are a nominal .312 but have never seen a bore survey of owners.

The Japanese 7.7 round has almost the same ballistic equivalence to the .303 British with minor variations in case design other than the case rim.

The Mosin has been made by so many countries and for so long also demonstrates considerable variation in bore diameters. .3105 is what is commonly sold as fmj for the 7.62x39 Russian. I think a nominal .311 bore size is the design spec for 7.54x54r for the Mosin. The Finns, for awhile, used a .308 barrel on their Mosins between fights with the Russians but then reverted to .311 for the Winter War and reamed out throats a bit more on their remaining .308 barrels and stamped them as able to accept .311 7.54x54r cartridges safely.

195 Re Arisakas. For military trials, the T99 originally had the same long barrel as the T38 6.5 rifle. I think collectors have a few remaining examples of these. But, like the Italians, the Japanese were caught during transition from one cartridge to another and this caused the T99 Arisakas to be made only in one barrel length---about 26 inches or so versus 31 plus inches for the original long barrelled T99.

A quick tell whether your T99 Arisaka was an early make or not is whether it has a chromed bore. Other early features included a rickety wire bipod that folded to the stock plus fold out aircraft sight wings on the rear rifle sight. By 1943 or so, the Japanese kept reducing finishing operations on the T99 until you get to the last ditch types of late 1944 to 1945.

FWIW, there are also some cast iron receiver training rifle versions of the T99 that are not to be shot at all--these normally are smoothbores but lot of variation on these.

There's an Epoch Times article (paywalled) related to that finding. Apparently a guy doing other research was given some leftover jab juice to use as an example of pure mRNA and found that it wasn't.

I wonder if this might explain the study from a while back that found jab mRNA "surviving" two months after injection. Maybe it wasn't surviving, but being produced by this DNA that got somewhere that fed it raw materials?

It appears someone wants a zoning change to build a Culver's, another change for an additional phase of 38 new lots for housing, a change of zoning for a truck maintenance shop, and a change from ag to medium density housing. I have no issues with these things.

Looked at their six year capital plan, and see that they want to build a "Community Rec Center" over the next two years.

One bright spot: I needed a replacement tire for my car trailer, and I found a good used one at a tire store for $40, which I thought was a decent price. Old tire had a belt separation or something, worn thin at one point on the circumference, decent tread elsewhere. Looks like the imbalance took out the wheel bearings, too. And no bearings of the right size in my junk box, drat.

And that part of the way you can tell the age of your type 99, is that toward the end of the war they stopped chroming the barrels.

Actually, I DO mind the out and proud Marxist blather. Communism is Nazism with better PR. Indeed, if you rack up body counts, I think Communism wins the murdering Elimination Bracket for the last century.

I was listening to a gaming review podcast. Like the guy who hosts it a lot. He seems fairly based and I agree with his reviews usually. He has a roundtable review show he did every week (don't they all.) It was very worldwide cast. One guy was in the Netherlands, another a german in Japan (IIANM) and then a random guest. Well, one of the guys pops up one podcast and says 'As you know, I am an avowed Marxist...' and that pretty much did it for me. If he had said, I am a faithful Roman Catholic, he would have gotten more reaction from the panel.

To my mind, it is not just the endorsement of a horrific system and brutal ideology that creates misery by the truckload, it is the casual way they manage to ruin everything. It is like crossfit or vegans or atheists.

Never did listen to that podcast again.

342 I have one of those Arisaka rifles that my dad picked up while participating the occupation of Japan. It has the chrysanthemum on it - I never knew what that meant, so thanks!

Unfortunately, my rifle is in not-so-good shape. Dad, being ignorant about firearms (he was a Navy radio operator), intentionally disabled it by breaking the firing pin and breaking the trigger off to prevent someone trying to fire an off-caliber cartridge.

The rifle suffered further damage when he bequeathed it to his 9-year-old son (me). Using a magnifying glass, I burned my name and the Volkswagen logo into it (we had a '57 Beetle). And I also drilled holes into its furniture to try to mount a makeshift monopod and a machine gun sight Dad found in a Japanese cave.

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at May 31, 2023 10:45 PM (ynpvh)

Arisakas were made at a number of different arsenals and the code is a series of circles on the side of the action next to the serial number.

345 That debate judge's paradigm. https://tinyurl.com/that-judge

"Before anything else, including being a debate judge, I am a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist"

Followed, unsuprisingly, by:
"I am a transgender woman who has a deeper voice, please take that into account. It's exhausting to see judges and debaters who are unable to resolve this contradiction, either attribute my RFD to men on the panel, or treat me like a man as a result of my voice."

The Venn diagram of modern commies-trannies-speech police is converging to a circle.
