Top Story

  • An idea so bad even the crazies at Ars Technica are calling it out: Google Search has started rolling out "ChatGPT-style" generative AI results. (Ars Technica)

The only thing we want from a search engine is to report accurately on what has been said on the web relating to our search term.

The most notable thing about ChatGPT and its relatives is that it will simply make shit up, including quotes that were never said and scientific papers that were never published.

This is going to be a disaster.

    It's opt-in for now.

    For now.

  • JPMorgan says hold my Bud Light as plans leak for a ChatGPT-based investment advice service. (CNBC)

To be fair, the company hasn't officially announced anything; this could just be a case of staking a claim on a trademark to make sure nobody else nabs it.

To continue being fair, on the scale of dumb ideas this is a polar ice cap to Google's iceberg.

Either one entirely capable of sinking the Titanic, mind you.

Tech News

  • Acer's new Swift Edge 16 is a laptop. (Liliputing)

It has the latest Ryzen 7840U - the lower-power variant of the 7840HS - with 8 Zen 4 CPU cores and 12 RDNA3 GPU cores.

The screen is a 16" 120Hz 3200x2000 OLED model covering 100% of DCI-P3 colour and reaching 400 nits brightness, all of which sounds good. It has two USB 4 ports, two USB 3 ports, HDMI, microSD, and a headphone jack, plus a 1440p webcam (commonly these are 1080p or even just 720p) and the latest WiFi 7.

The Four Essential Keys are present in the form of a three-column numeric keypad, which is not perfect but something I can live with. Price starts at $1299 with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD, and there's a second M.2 slot for expansion.

Memory is soldered (LPDDR4 according to the article, which I suspect is wrong), but at least there's a 32GB model on the way though pricing for that is not mentioned.

The other point of note is that it weighs 1.23kg, which is actually lighter than my current 14" laptop. Could be worth checking out. There are plenty of more powerful 16" laptops with better keyboard layouts, but they are also anything between 50% and 100% heavier than this one.

  • Western Digital's 2TB SN850X is available for $135. (Tom's Hardware)

This is a good drive. It's TLC, has a DRAM cache, and supports PCIe 4 with a top transfer rate over 7GB per second. It's a little more expensive than other models in the current market, but even so costs less than the cheapest, nastiest 2TB drives from just one year ago.

  • Final Cut Pro is here for the iPad. It sucks. (9to5Mac)

Not because Final Cut Pro is bad. Not because the iPad hardware isn't capable of running it. But because Apple has deliberately crippled iOS to such a degree that it is useless for any remotely serious task.

For example, if you edit your video in Final Cut Pro, start exporting the final compressed version, and then switch over to play some Flappy Bird while that runs, your export will simply die, because iOS won't do that.

Can. iOS is Unix. Just won't.

I'm afraid to ask but will anyway. What does "WBAGNFARB" stand for? Is it like "NTTAWWT" or "FIAWOL" ("Fandom Is a Way of Life")?

The other acronym I used to see when I went to SF conventions was ""FIJAGH," "Fandom Is Just a Goddamn Hobby."

5 My boss wants me to write a report for the board meeting in the fall about some unsubmitted financial reports. There was nothing dishonest about the fact they weren't submitted, just that the staffer wasn't doing her job (and has now moved to a new position anyway). And we didn't go over budget. Still, he wants it documented.

I'm tempted to see if ChatGPT could compose the essential report that I'm supposed to write. Once it's composed, can you edit it?

One of my other cousins got to playing with Chat GPT and gave me a report a couple days ago. This ain't the re-tard meteorologist cousin, but another one, on my my mother's side.

He almost got a Ph.D in mathematics. This sort of runs in the family. We've got a streak that gets interested in all this high-powered book-learnin' and shit, but there's another part that just ain't cut out for that life. He's one.

Anyway, playing with Chat GPT, he got into some arcane mathematical topics, some very tricky stuff in Group Theory. He asked Chat GPT a question, of which he knew the answer. Chat GPT gave him the the wrong answer.

He corrected it. Thereafter, Chat GPT then repeated his correction, as though it knew it all along.

The Brave browser, whose Search engine gives such piss-poor results in general (forcing me when at wit's end to use the evil Google Search which usually still finds what I'm looking for immediately), is already doing this -- no Opt In or Out that I'm aware of.

The top result is a "Summarizer" (called Brave AI) and half the time the answers are incorrect and/or nonsense. Ugh ...

My cousin said he "downloaded" some version of Chat GPT for free.

Prime numbers was the first thing he asked it about. He asked it, "Are the infinitely many prime numbers?" Chat GPT said, "There may be". As Cuz pointed out, the ancient Greeks figured out there were an infinite number of primes. He then tried to pin it down, "Are there or are there not, an infinite number of primes?"

Chat GPT then said, "Yes" and gave him a proof, or a reference to it, that was correct. So, first it was "may be", then "definitely yes, here's the proof".

Then he got into some Group Theory stuff, were Chat GPT stated something false, which he then corrected.

He moved here from Oklahoma City (which he thought didn't have enough "die-versity"). I suspect he doesn't like living here and is marking time until he can move on. (Which I understand.)

These reports were to clear corporate credit card transactions. All legitimate. But the staffer, whom I've known for years, just . . . didn't finish and submit these things to clear the charges. Totaled about $45K over five years. Despite having a Ph.D. in history, she is mildly dyslexic and ADHD-ish, so that was part of it, and she was never very organized either. (I kept telling her to create bookmarks in her browser for sites she frequently consulted, but she insisted on going to Gorgle to search for the same sites every time.) Now I, and her successor, have to document all this stuff.

32 Remember the movie 'Sneakers'? Robert Redford. Dan Ackroyd. Ben Kingsley. Mary McDonnell. River Phoenix. Even a bit part by James Earl Jones.

I remember there is an exchange between Redford and Kingsley that taught me a lot about the leftist mindset. They are discussing what has happened in the 20 odd years since they had last seen each other. Kingsley makes the remark that people do not operate on reality, they operate based on their perception of reality.

THIS is primary in their worldview, but they get it wrong. It IS true that people operate based on their perception of reality- but that does not CHANGE reality. They believe that perception can be MADE to be the reality.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at May 26, 2023 05:43 AM (zZu0s)

35 The Left is in the mode of trying to control what people can say because they want to warp reality to only be seen from their viewpoint. However, reality is what it is, regardless of what they say. So when they realize they cannot keep reality from intruding, and controlling the people who point out reality, they will start eliminating people who point out reality as the only way to maintain control.

It is a pattern that keeps repeating and why they are a deadly threat NOW.

It's hubris that they think they can control human nature. Censorship is just one of the arrows in their quiver used to 'change' human behavior, also called 'gaslighting'.

The Butt Light 'boycott' does not compute with them. It's not an organized boycott but rather an organic one that just happened. The left does nothing organically, it's all gamed and plotted out but called 'organic' to gaslight us into thinking they are a majority and their opinion is the way things should be. DE&I is a great example. Target is so proud of it they are hiding its advertising/merchandise because no one but a tiny few want that shit.

We really do have the power, we either don't realize we have it or haven't exercised it yet. But the Butt Light fiasco is a damn good start in recognizing that power. Stomping a pride placard in a Target store, while illegal, is also a good beginning. "Enough of this shit!"

I truly thought AOC would be a flash in the pan, one and done. But no, she has managed to stay in power. Fascinating in a very bad way. A complete and total moron ran for Congress, beat a heavily favored incumbent in the primary and won. Now we have a dementia-addled president and a mentally challenged senator who is newly elected while mentally challenged and didn't get that way after years in the Senate. I tried to look this up on the internet but couldn't find info. I thought you might know. My son's doctor is an Orthodox Jew is his late 70's. I asked him once why he wasn't retired and he said, "I have to pay back my student loans." Apparently he was a lawyer before he decided the law wasn't for him and he went back to medical school! Anyway, he wears silvery attached slender rings over all of his fingers. I wasn't sure if this was a religious item or a medical one, but I didn't have the chance to ask him.

He's a nice guy with a dry sense of humor and is about to go to Israel for a month where at least one of his daughters lives. He asked me what I did once and he now calls me "Reverend " which nobody calls me which makes me smile.

Yes, I'm sure every culture in decline has had that problem. Something specific, though tiny and unnoticed, is usually the culprit, something that destroys cultural cohesiveness without seeming to do anything at all.

Our current problem is the woke communism control bullshit. It is so much easier to destroy than to build and we are currently living in an age of destruction, where even our literal history is being destroyed to make it less offensive to snowflakes everywhere. Our culture of trust has quickly morphed into a culture of lies -- and that's never good.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at May 26, 2023 06:38 AM (9UlRk)

Well... sort of. The dual Consulship was a way to divide power. Two guys with absolute power to check each other and with a single year term.

The dictator was a 6 month appointment. It was extraordinary because Consuls could be litigated against AFTER their term of office was over. Dictators were not supposed to be accountable to anyone, ever. That is why it was an extraordinary position.

The problem is, that amount of power is not safe in anyone's hands, long term. The state should not have the power of life and death invested in any of it's functionaries.

99 Also yesterday talked with a Balkan family, who has asked me to edit/write a book for them (it's a personal obligation). They recently suffered a severe tragedy and have... 'doubts and questions' and what was supposed to be one thing turned into a 3 hour video call on Comparative Religion, which is interfering with the blocking on the present project that needs to get done first. The big thing about the Balkans and Near East is, none of the very ancient Shaman/Pagan stuff ever went away: it's fully intact from deep antiquity and is co-opted into, or tolerated by, the more recent Faiths. It makes conversations about 'religion' interesting, for sure, but very challenging. You HAVE to know a lot about ancient Shamanism, The Evil Eye, all that old stuff, to have a coherent conversation with anybody from there.

108 Christianity, of the 'Orthodox' sort, arrived in the Balkans many centuries ago, said, "Well, see, there's one God that's more powerful than all the other ones, and, uh, let's stop with the human sacrifices."
And that's about as far as anybody got! In the late 1800s some English traveler talked with a priest in some remote burg and commented on the admirable work of Christianizing the locals. The priest went, "Phft. They show up all the time, yeah, but I turn my back for a second, they're out dancing naked under the Moon."
Can confirm. The place is wild. You want to see what Original Christianity was dealing with, get into the very remote Balkan mountains. It's all still there. It's really everywhere, just ever-so-slightly papered over and/or co-opted.

Brown and her team studied wastewater at a mixed plastics recycling facility in the United Kingdom and found it could produce up to 6.5 million pounds of microplastic per year.

The safest, most efficient, most practical use of plastics in recycling the material into energy production. Non-recycled plastics can supply more than 15,000 BTUs per pound. That’s more energy per pound than any type of coal.

I have, in practice, found this to be true. Most people there easily recognize Shamanist Paganism because it's all still there. For instance, the Balkans never burned any witches; they never even tried to eliminate that stuff, just hopefully offered a better alternative. The Orthodox Christianity tends to be simple and foundational, kind of lean-and-mean, sticking to the basics and not sweating the small stuff. 'People gonna people' is the working principle.

174 "The only thing we want from a search engine is to report accurately on what has been said on the web relating to our search term."

The big ones haven't been so hot in doing this of late.

Something as simple as a minus/negative (IE, look for A, but not B - "Diamond Silk -Neil") is being steadfastly ignored, making it impossible to find some info on some topics. You have to go to alternative places (like Reddit) and use their search features to hope that someone else has complained about your problem too.

And avoid any Microsoft forums - they either give you multiple paragraphs of their forum pedigree, followed by even more paragraphs of copy-pasted instructions that hit a keyword ("Oh, blue not showing! Here's how to deal with a Blue Screen:"), or telling the original user (who perfectly indicated the exact issue you are having) that this is the wrong forum and they need to try in another - with no links or indication or BLOCKING the useless thread from search results.

176 I've picked up a couple of SN850Xs recently and they are quite good. The downsides are that firmware update are available exclusively via their Internet-connected Windows-based dashboard (i.e., no direct downloads of firmware files) and no changelog is provided. So, if you're planning to use these for a Linux build (as I was), be prepared to have a partition set aside for an unactivated Windows install just for firmware updates.

I work online, go to school full-time, and have earned $64,000 so far this year. Through an online business opportunity I learned about, I've made a bunch of money. It's really extremely user-friendly, so I'm really delighted I found out about it. I work in this field. BONUS: Good luck.
