Feed Sack (Flour Sack) Clothes

For all the talk about “recycling” these days, it can’t hold a candle to how my grandparents’ generation reduced, reused, and recycled.

Milk and other beverages came in reusable bottles. Vegetables were grown on the property and preserved in reusable Ball jars, and all the corn husks and potato peelings were thrown right back into the compost heap to produce free fertilizer. If you wore a hole in your socks they’d get darned, and a hole in the knee of your britches would get patched.

And the bags that flour and chicken feed came from?

Flour Sack Dress - 1.JPG

They were repurposed as fabric for women’s dresses.

In the 1930’s, the Great Depression began to have a widespread impact on North Americans, and more and more women had to save as much money as possible when it came to household expenses. Feed sacks began to be more widely utilized to make clothing, in addition to rags, towels, etc. The companies manufacturing these goods took notice of this increasingly popular trend, making their sacks easier to creatively recycle was not only helpful to the North American housewife, but it was a genius marketing move, in that it encouraged people to buy their products.

Just Good Music

What do you get if you mix some Dolly Parton music with mariachi?

You get this, and it’s spectacular. While I may love what an upright bass signifies in music, I’ll gladly trade it for a guitarron any day of the week.

Here is honky-tonk mariachi singer Stephanie Urbina Jones performing Jolene.

Colorado Is Neither a Square Nor a Rectangle, It’s a Hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagon

Even if the surveyors hadn’t made some errors along the way, Colorado still wouldn’t be a rectangle, because the east and west borders are longitudinal lines, which slowly converge as they move north (until they ultimately meet at the North Pole.) Accordingly, the top of Colorado is 22 miles narrower than the bottom of Colorado

But there were plenty of errors as the surveyors tried to stay true to the defined borders.

Colorado Is Not a Rectangle—It Has 697 Sides

In 1879, a survey party marched north from Four Corners, placing markers at every mile. The surveyors eventually reached the Wyoming border, but not where they thought they’d end up. Later surveys, in 1885 and 1893, found out where the original surveyors had gone wrong, but by that time the border as surveyed had become the official one.

The biggest error occurs just south of the road connecting La Sal, Utah to Paradox, Colorado. Across an eight-mile stretch, the surveyors strayed westward before regaining true north. The resulting deviation is 3860 feet (1.18 kilometers).

To Whom Is Masked DiCaprio Being Obedient?

The picture below of Leonardo DiCaprio is from this month - May 2023!

Part of me wants to mock him, but I can’t help but think that despite all his wealth, this is the picture of a prisoner in obedience to someone who has him on an invisible leash.

DiCaprio in Mask below nose - May 2023.JPG

During peak Covid, when I couldn’t enter my office building or get on a plane without wearing a mask, I’d have one around my face, but under my nose, or possibly just hanging on my chin. That generally satisfied the enforcers of Covid sharia, while allowing me to breathe, and to also register my protest against the covidiocy.

Is DiCaprio actually trying to virtue signal, even though the mask is under his nose?

Or is there a woman or an agent in his life demanding that DiCaprio remain true to the Covidian faith by wearing its amulet, forcing him to still do what so many of us did back in 2020?

1970s Variety Shows

It’s a shame that variety shows no longer exist. Some were great, such as Carol Burnett. Others were, well, they were really something. And boy do they make great time capsules.

Somehow at the time, it made perfect sense for Redd Foxx, Kris Kristofferson, and Paul Lynde to join Donny and Marie in doing a song and dance skit about Star Wars.

In the spirit of Ginger vs Mary Ann, here are your ballots:

GUYS: Carrie Fisher or Marie Osmond?

GALS: Harrison Ford or Kris Kristofferson? (You can also write in Redd Foxx or Donny Osmond.)

Throckmorton’s First Law Of Live Music: If There’s An Upright Bass In The Band, It’s Probably Going to Be Good

This is pretty cool. Paul McCartney performs Heartbreak Hotel on the upright bass played by Bill Black in the early Elvis days. The bass is the only instrumentation accompanying McCartney’s singing.

8 At "this old farm house" there was a small footstool I recall from my youth ... it became very worn, and sometime after 2000 I opened it to find eight used cans stacked and wrapped inside the footstool.

CANS ... they used cans for their footstool. They improvised many things.

46 When a normal company "terminates" an employee, you can picture them carrying a box of their belongings out of the building.

When planned infanticide "terminates" an employee, you can picture them being carried out of the building as so many severed legs, arms, heads, torsos, in a box.

Such is their ethos. They've lived by it, I would not cry if their "terminations" were such, to the very end. Meanwhile, I'll just pop popcorn, and be entertained.

47 But the Sierra Club? No their money comes from government "sanctions" where the company has to make donations to them. And that does happen under democrats.

They're still laying people off.

Sierra Club, the largest anti-nuclear environmental group in America, appears to be coming apart at the seams.

Last month, Ben Jealous, the 130 year-old organization’s new Executive Director, announced major layoffs. The Sierra Club, he told employees, was restructuring and needed to cut its budget.

“The Sierra Club says the layoffs—the precise number yet to be revealed—are meant to help fill a projected $40 million shortfall for the coming year. (For context, the Sierra Club spent $151 million in 2022.),” reports The New Republic. “The budget the group’s board of directors approved the day before the call features drastic cuts that would purportedly shrink that deficit to just $2.3 million.”

Cutting one-quarter of its budget.

Ha! Grampa did tell me he couldn't afford new tires for the tractor, a Ford 9N, during the war and they wouldn't hold air any more. So, he filled them with dried, shelled corn and drove the damn thing into the creek. The corn absorbed the water and then swelled. The tires were then puffed up enough that he could ride on them for a time.

When she died, my oldest sister gave everything to neighbors, but since they were Mennonite, I'm certain they made good use of them. Still burns that she didnt ask if the rest of us kids wanted something of Mom's.

said, 'I can tell you one thing, if you call out some other woman's name in your sleep, you're going to wake up with a broken nose and a bloody lip'.

138 Just found on YouTube a Mayday episode not seen before. It was about the cargo 747 that crashed at Baghram air base.

What a freaky chain of circumstance that lead to the fatal crash. The untrained loadmaster wasn't even the first link, it was the company manual on securing oversized cargo that holds that dubious honor because it was wrong.

As a result the rearmost MRAP broke free at take-off and rolled aft. Where the radio antenna mount took out the CVR and FDR before the spare tire smashed through the aft pressure bulkhead and took out two of the four hydraulic lines. But the coup de grace that doomed the plane was delivered by the MRAP's rear bumper which broke the jackscrew that allowed the pilots to control the horizontal stabilizer.

It is converted to acetaldehyde and stored in the gut, until it leaks through the gut wall to be absorbed into the blood stream to be transferred to the liver to be broken down. The acetaldehyde in the blood is what causes the major elements of the hangover.

You don't need a compass to run a straight line in the bush. Leastwise, not every sight. Set a picket, sharpened to a point on top. Shot a compass bearing, or use a Sun shot, to set a second picket further up the line. There you a a line with two points on it. Two points define a line. Set the third and subsequent pickets by eyeballing them with the ones previously set. An Indian showed me this trick, and it works just fine. You can run a line for miles, arrow-straight, as it were.

This is turning out be a very cool, if not coldish and wet spring here. I was looking at the records. Our average daily temp over the month of May is not too different from normal, nor the average lows, but the average high is a few points down.

But there are some quite significant swings where it gets pretty cold. That pattern has been going on all spring, and even late winter.

It got up into the 80s in late Feb (set a daily record, I think one day or two), and I was thinking it was going to be a hot spring. Boy, was I wrong.

Last time I was in Vegas I was out pretty late hitting some bars with friends.

When my GF and I got back to our hotel she had to hit the bathroom ASAP, so I sat near the elevators and waited for her.

I saw one of the most beautiful women I've seen walk by me and start talking on her phone. She gave her name and then was asking for a room number. And...this is at 2 or 3 AM.

And after getting the number she went up. I'm guessing to see her John.

She was dressed somewhat sexy, but nothing out of the ordinary for a Vegas hotel customer out on the night. But...she was very well endowed in addition to being very pretty. I imagine she was...quite pricey.

Well, my Mom was born in 1922. The quilt her Mom made comes from around 1910-1930. Probably the latter rather than earlier; The Depression, you know.

As far as the stitching goes, my Grandma had an old treadle sewing machine and the stitches look pretty regular. Even the fabric patches used to make the patchwork quilt looks like they have machine stitching. Probably has some hand-sewn parts, but living on a small farm in the hills of Appalachia with 5 kids, Grandma needed a sewing machine.

221 mickey,

When it comes to gardening I, too, know very little. Like you, any knowledge is osmosis (live or tv). I do know the first thing is to find out about your soil, what grows best. Grow that. Learn to like it. Also, a few chickens never hurt. You get your eggs and your Sunday dinner. If there's no room for Bessie the milk cow, then a sheep or goat will have to do. For milk and for making cheese and, if a particularly ornery animal, dinner. Not much actual labor in the cheese (except for the care and feeding of said goat/sheep), just time. Also, grow whatever flowers grow in your soil. Make the bees and other insects happy, happy enough to do some pollination work for you. IMO, gardening is learning your local conditions and working with them to the best of your ability.

There's a lot to the planning, as well as the labor.

Simple as all that, eh?

I've become a cynic as my defense against KlownWorld.
Nothing is believable. Then there's that one thing, an happenstance, with a situation and you, regardless the cynicism, do what's right.

I used to believe in my prowess at writing software that 'got the idea' and delivered it in such a way as to know years later that something I wrote still runs as wonderfully.

Think of Jeff Beck, Larry Bird. It's what they do. OCD while retaining some anchor to klownworld.

242 Thanks guys and gals for the English. We teach and learn.

One other this/that that has stayed with me. It was an important (I suppose) paper at college where I misused anxious/eager.

The simple choice of words of a long ago world of discourse.

And now to use anxious and eager in a time frame argument.

Praying for the end of time...
When does ever arrive? Carlin -- there may be 'extra' innings -- that's eager unless your team is losing.
Perl has the functional keywords 'unless' and 'until'.

249 You can imagine I'm out of step since Python is the thing. It has no improvement over Perl. Ruby is a Perl clownish and everyone now uses the regex that was in Perl first.

Perl also has suffered the same dipshits that gave us Java. When Perl (it's typeless and understands what you're doing) got Moose toppled onto it, that was the end of stupid for me.
Also, typical ffs question "when do you use strict?"
Um, never.

I despise Object oriented programming and the OOP languages. Ken Thompson is apparently there as well, hating C++ -- he mentioned in an interview how Bjorn Strustrupp however the fuck you spell it, blessed him out about dissing C++ one time.

I remember reading an article a while back that was right up my alley. OOP was nice, and lent itself well to the event driven nature of GUIs. That was a false panacea, and they concluded that all OOP is garbage in general.

I agree. My mind just would not click with OOP. This is crap, I said when trying to learn some of it. I'll stick with with procedural, and fuck all this shit.

Ask me how I fixed one of Dell's big time servers with a multipartitioned bootable image that apparently only I understood. Yes, I got paid. Two years before I showed up and I asked the same question for a couple of months. What are the offsets to the partition, how large is the image, what formats need to be layed down on these various partitions?

Yep, she's my okra bride. When I lured her down her to my lair, she'd never had okra before. I started her out with fried, which she loved. Then boiled, and to my amazement, she loved that as well. Her brother came down, and she made him eat it as well. He ain't zactly as keen as she is on the boiled, but she makes him eat it.

279 They really liked the masks. The other thing is, it is not just 'them.' People like wearing symbols of the things they believe in. They like iconography and symbolism. Every time I choose a T-shirt (when not working) I can choose from the 'Actions speak louder than Words', The one I picked up from the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson, or the 'Lord of Kings' shirt (that is done up like a Lord of the Rings t-shirt.)

The iconoclast movement that swept through the Church after Vatican II was not anti- symbology- they were just against the old symbols of the Faith. Getting rid of the old was the symbology of the new. Fucking commies.

Thanks for the ONT.
