THE MORNING RANT: Corporations Opened the Door to Evil When They Started Trying to Be On the Side of “Good”

It may seem hard to believe, with corporate America so aggressive in advocating for divisive social issues, but corporations used to generally prohibit advocacy in the workplace for any cause that was unrelated to the operations of its business.

Unfortunately, corporate America no longer knows how to decline involvement in social issues. Instead, they feel they must weigh in, but there’s only one side that the left’s mob of outrage warriors will allow. So corporate America, which feels it must take a stand in favor of that which is “good,” has joined in advocacy for the left’s agenda.

My career started in the late ‘80s for a division of a very prominent corporation. Any political advocacy, promotion of good causes, fund raising for worthy charities, etc. was strictly prohibited in the office.

In my first supervisory role when I was still in my mid-20s, I occasionally had to pull employees aside and counsel them that they could not engage in activities such as selling raffle tickets or band candy in the office. I once instructed an employee to take down a poster in the break room promoting her church’s Fall Festival.

The only charity that was allowed to be promoted in the office was United Way, which had the official endorsement of the company (for better or worse), but we wouldn’t even allow employees to pass around pledge sheets to support them in charity runs for causes such as cancer or heart disease. Employees were welcome to do that in their own time and outside of the office.

It seemed kind of draconian to me at the time, and I was sometimes embarrassed telling my subordinates (who were usually older than me) that although their intentions were commendable, they could not promote their worthwhile causes in the office. I understand now how important it was to remain steadfast in barring such activities in the workplace, even if they were for “good causes.”

How could there be anything wrong with encouraging employees to support fundraising efforts to battle cancer, or heart disease, or AIDS? And why not use company time and resources for these worthwhile causes?

The answer is because that is how slopes become slippery. It was a straight line from raising employees’ awareness about AIDS to mandating that employees disclose their gender pronouns in email signatures.

Not wanting to be seen as bigoted, corporations started becoming very active in supporting organizations involved in “good” causes, especially those that affect women and identity groups. Thus, battling AIDS and breast cancer became workplace priorities. Don’t misunderstand, these are worthwhile causes, but once the barn door was opened, corporate America could not say “No” to any “worthy” cause. And since the far left gets to determine what is worthy and good, we now have major corporations promoting cross-dressing in the office and compelling certain disfavored employee demographics to submit to dehumanizing struggle sessions.

The left’s march through the institutions involved so much more than this topic of course, but when corporate America forfeited the right to say “No” to good causes, it opened the door to having to say “Yes” to every left wing pathology.

Be it the Bud Light debacle with Dylan Mulvaney, or the Los Angeles Dodgers’ “Pride Night” debacle (which will feature cross-dressers named the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” mocking Catholics, with the support and endorsement of the Dodgers), these companies would have been so much better off if they had a policy of focusing only on beer and baseball, and leaving social issues to others.

If the woke backlash that destroyed Bud Light can take down a few more major corporate brands (hello Target), perhaps corporate America will be incentivized to start saying “No” again to all advocacy.

Charity and compassion begin at home. Leave it out of the workplace.

Absolutely! And I will go one better...get rid of the execrable United Way campaigns in so many corporations. I had to deal with that for many years, and I despised the pressure to give, and the monumental waste of time.

If a corporation wants to virtue signal, then simply provide a system to match employee donations to the charity of their choice, up to some reasonable amount.

They can't. The personalities involved won't permit it. There is a real problem problem of expectation and ambition. I'm a Dread Millennial. I don't know about growing up in X generation, but in mine, activism is *the* badge of moral courage. It's never said directly (or it wasn't when I was in school and the like), but it was implied in all things. To be good, you *must* "fight for what's right" in all contexts. And what's right is, of course, what's left.

"We're here to make money" is downright hateful. It's narrow. It's backwards. It's limiting. It's wrong. We're here not (just) to make money, we're here to Change The World (tm). When activism (especially left activism) is your fundamental moral precept, then you *must* pursue it and drag the non-believers along if needed.

Tuesday was day one of the federal criminal trial for two Maryland doctors accused of sharing protected medical information with Russia. Dr. Anna Gabrielian and her husband, Jamie Lee Henry, both of Rockville, were indicted in September 2022 on allegations they illegally shared private information with the Russian government. Gabrielian is an anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Henry is an Army major with secret security clearance who worked at Fort Bragg and Walter Reed Hospital.
...
Henry publicly came out as transgender in 2015 and was reported as the first known active-duty Army officer to be openly trans.

Why on earth do we continue to give security clearances to perverts?

As you should be. There is one kind of charitable giving I actually really like: "meals on wheels" programs for the elderly and shut-ins. Those are programs I like and want to support.

In my new locale, though, I refuse to give to it. Why? It's a county-affiliated program that is super-woke. They can't be satisfied just providing meals to old people, they have to pursue "equity" and prioritize based on things like race and sex. Old white men who need meals are below old black women who need meals. I refuse to support something like that. The local charity is quite efficient (they aren't just robbing the treasury) and they *do* do the work, but their mission is now so perverted that I decided that I won't help them with it.

There are some churches with food banks that don't play those games, though.

IIRC, and this is very dimly remembered, but around say 80AD or so, the 'Jewish Wars' in the Holy Land were based around a couple of things.

1) Roman Occupation
2) The... high ups in the Judaic Church were taking tithes over and above the regular roman tax collection.
3) Some emperor (Think it was Caligula?) seized the monies held in tithe by the leaders and the leaders allowed the seizure.

So, they were not just revolts/wars against occupation, but also revolts against the collaborating, useless assholes of the (keep wanting to say 'Church') Hierarchy.

Sound familiar?

In our company we allow non-political charitable solicitations, like band candy sales or church back-to-school supply money-raisers, and our employees are very careful to keep it very moderate. Early in my career (in '89), I hired on as a software developer for a large California bank. Does everybody else remember the "United Way" campaigns? Ugh ...

So, the corporate blackmail was this: if everybody in a division donated a minimum of $X (don't recall the amount, maybe $100?), then everybody would earn an extra Paid Day Off. I mean, who wouldn't take that sweet deal so you had bragging rights of "unanimous VOLUNTARY participation?"

This was great: there was one bitch in the group whom everybody hated (happened to be from China, and would refuse to cooperate with people on any project as she had specialized silo knowledge, refused to share it -- giving her some form of power & value).

Anyway, here's the rub: she was the only one who REFUSED to participate and didn't give a f*ck, probably because she was already hated, and I had to admit having a perverse grudging admiration and respect for her after that.

That's only going to increase unless they start slashing stores fast, but that will also lead to losses. In short - I think Target Corp is in serious trouble.

Target is a woke company. It supports woke causes. It gives vast sums of money to leftist organizations and politicians. It flogs every available leftist narrative in its stores. They relish in their wokeness. It works for them. AWFLs love Target. It's their "safe space."

But Target is also bleeding out because of the crime-is-legal policies it supports so vocally. They're losing staggering sums to theft, and Target is heavily dependent on urban areas. Get outside of the suburbs and there are damn few Targets.

Any new consumer backlash will be minor, but I think they fear that it might be the last straw this time instead of a nothingburger that actually strengthens the brand with its core demo of AWFLs.

I had to treat guys in the USN who didn't believe they could get a sunburn.
They didn't believe my warnings; but, the sun's intensity is a little stronger near the South China Sea.
The funny part was when they came to sickbay and complained of hurting and I had to show them they were just sunburnt. "Stay out of the sun and maybe go self medicate with aspirin and alcohol".

94 I once argued with my sister that something or other would cause a "backlash" against trans people. I finally got her to agree. But then she said...backlashes are good. It all still settles out farther ahead.

No, they're not good. Having gender dysphoria is hard. Telling people WITH gender dysphoria that everyone wants them dead, that "woman" can not be defined, that there are 63 genders, that a woman-penis is completely different from a man-penis and if you complain at seeing one you're a bigot...none of these things help and all of them HURT.

There's always been room in society for the weirdo or eccentric. Just don't demand that everyone pretend they AREN'T a weirdo and aren't eccentric, or that they don't have a (very real) mental disorder. And don't tell kids they can be what they feel like. We don't live in a Heinlein future where a person can EFFECTIVELY change from a man to a woman or back again. Medicine is not there, or even close. Tell kids that they can be and like whatever they want *in their body*. I can't be tall, no matter how anguished being short made my teen years. Tell kids that puberty is often hell, but it's a hell everyone experiences.

150 There's an aspect of this worth considering, which is that IF Targay collapses, and IF it's not entirely due to Woke, people should shout it to the rooftops, that Woke cause it.

Why? Psychological warfare. Let the straights, the common riffraff think Woke is costing corps their business, even if it's more complicated than that.

Absolutely. The beautiful thing about narratives - and we don't have one yet, but it's getting there and Bud Light is responsible for it and Pride Month is going to make it self-reinforce for a while - is that it makes this effortless.

That *will* get shouted from the rooftops if Target has brutal numbers and starts closing stores. Even if anti-woke backlash is a minor - or even non-existent - factor, that is going to be the story on the street. It will make people inclined to vote their wallets in the culture war more inclined to try again next time. Even if the narrative in Target's case is false, it will still reinforce the baseline condition if bad things happen to the company.

Turns out, Opie wanted to buy his girlfriend a new coat for the winter because her family couldn’t afford one and he didn’t want her to be cold — i.e., he WAS practicing charity after all, for a cause that he knew and that was right before his eyes. Oh, I know. That is my point in comment 70. Woke is Target's brand and has been for some time. Any backlash is going to be minor, because it has already happened and Target built a loyalty among the pro-woke doing it. They're not going to see a major sales or traffic decline because of this.

But they might see a little bit, and since the company is already on the ropes in other areas, that might matter. The company itself certainly seems to be worried about it or they wouldn't have blinked and moved the "Pride Month" displays out of sight.

It's a motivation. It is not the only motivation. There are other huge motivating factors, though, and they are wrecking them. Foremost among the other motivating factors are chance for advancement and pride (the real kind, not the "Pride Month" kind).

These woke corporations make it increasingly clear to the staff that certain kinds of people aren't going to get promotions. They are supposed to sit there and produce and not advance. If they question it, they're monsters and HR will work to remove them.

That nukes off both the future *and* the pride/honor of work in one fell swoop, and makes money the only game piece on the board. It's culturally disastrous inside the companies that do it.

AIDS is relatively rare, actually. Most people with HIV infection have it managed so it's no worse than, for example, diabetes.

And yet people with diabetes sometimes don't manage it well, and have limbs chopped off because of it. There are some things you can do to limit or completely avoid diabetes, but after you get it, if it's not being managed well, you are doing that to yourself.

So if you want to take weener up the rear, and you get HIV, that's your fault, sure. But we don't need ribbons for you anymore, because you can go to your doctor and manage it. Or don't. That's your choice.

They sure beat it into my head that way when I was in school. AIDS was *the* great terror they spent the most time on in health and sex ed classes. It could - and would - get *everyone.*

As an adult, of course, I learned that this isn't true. Heterosexual AIDS can happen, but it is so unusual that it essentially does not exist and there has to be a relatively narrow path to achieve it.

339 The purpose of a business is to sell consumers goods or services at a market price that is greater than the cost of providing that good or service. Any profits derived from that go to the owners of the business. Owners and employees can donate their money or their time however the hell they want. Diverting the business from its core purpose is inefficient for both the owners and employees. In the end, the recipients of the donated time or money are better off if there is more of said time or money available to be donated because it is the surplus of an efficient business.

362 The strict rule against workplace posting/soliciting in the 80s and beyond were mainly intended to prevent unions from posting/soliciting in the workplace. The NLRB's position was (is?) that if anyone gets to post/solicit, even for a charity, then everyone gets to post/solicit for any reason. Appeasing woke employees (typically the least productive and most PITA workers) appears to have trumped union avoidance for many companies.

It is for this reason that I never give anything to the cashiers at the local grocery store when they ask if I'd like to donate to cause X. If I want to give, I'll let you know. I work online, go to school full-time, and have earned $64,000 so far this year. Through an online business opportunity I learned about, I've made a bunch of money. It's really extremely user-friendly, so I'm really delighted I found out about it. I work in this field. BONUS: Good luck.
