Saturday Morning Coffee Break

coffeedead.jpg

You Know Misanthropic Humanitarian's rules...no running with hair, don't pull anyone's scissors, and play nice with the trolls! Bloviating is strictly forbidden, but opining is just peachy! And anyone who puts maple syrup on French Toast gets a night in the box. [I may have added that one]

But first: a moment of silence for my second oldest coffee cup. You may send flowers...

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

4/29 – Grammie Winger asked for prayers. Her doctor located a mass in her abdomen. She had a CT scan scheduled for 5/2.

4/29 – rhennigantx asked for prayers for his daughter. She needs some help with medical issues and mental issues.

4/29 – Prime Sister requests prayer for her son, Austin, in Singapore, who hasn’t been in touch for 6 months. Please pray he will contact someone soon.
5/8 Update – Thanks so much for your continued prayers. There hasn’t been any contact yet. But she has much more peace about this situation now.

4/29 – Morgan, longtime lurker, offers praise for God’s blessing on his Spanish studies and requests prayer for healing from his auto accident. He also prays for blessings upon the site and its moderators.
4/29 Update – Today he was pain-free! Praise be to God!

5/2 – Cat Ass Trophy’s father-in-law could use some prayers. He was admitted to the hospital last night. He was hit hard by the bronchitis going around. After more extensive tests, it was diagnosed as parainfluenza.

5/2 – Sponge asked for prayers. His father fell over the weekend and hurt himself badly. He has 6 broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and a fractured right arm. Some of the ribs splintered, so they will do surgery to insert a plate to stabilize them. His dad wasn’t in the greatest health anyway, so this will take a toll.
5/12 Update – Sponge reports that his dad is still a bit confused, but he was conscious and talking this past week. He still experiences some significant pain, but other than that, he appears to be on the road to a recovery of sorts.

5/2 – DaveT asks for prayers. He was trying to save his cats and his home, and then had an unfortunate court ruling, related to a family member who burdened the home with some debt. DaveT is over 65 and not able to work as much as he would like, and the cats have special needs, too (blind and older). He has a GiveSendGo set up, so please email Annie’s Stew for more information about how to contribute, if you would like to donate.

5/3 – Jewells asked for prayers for her niece, who had a biopsy done and they are pretty sure she has cervical cancer. She asked for prayers, please, for her sweet niece.

5/5 – gp asked for prayers for Ivan, who is in the hospital with heart problems. He is a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Thank you!

5/11 – FenelonSpoke again thanks everyone for the prayers and cards and donations to their church. They are blessed by your concern. The latest update is that the township Open Space intends to go ahead with the purchase of the land. However, the township committee still has to approve the purchase, so please continue to keep them in prayer. Thanks and God bless you all!

5/13 – Farmer Bob requested prayers for healing and peace. His wife’s mother died from Alzheimer’s disease last Sunday. They were caring for her in their home, but he was out of town on business. When he called his wife (of 34 years and 5 children) to comfort her, she let him know that she no longer loves him and would prefer he never return. He finds himself homeless and alone for the first time in 34 years.

5/20 Update – Farmer Bob did post an update to the comments, thanking the Horde for their prayers and explaining some more of the situation. He says he will try to send updates as he can. Continued prayers for he and his wife are appreciated.

5/16 – Tonypete lost a friend this week, Ron. Prayers of comfort for Ron’s family and friends would be helpful.

5/22 – NaughtyPine's mother passed away. We prayed for her mother when she went into hospice in April.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.

I know it's not the food thread yet, but grab a handful and put it in a ziploc and throw it in the freezer. A couple of weeks from now take it out and make this:

Georgia Brunswick Stew

https://tinyurl.com/ystzyccu

I've used pots, slow cookers, dutch ovens, etc., and it always turns out great. I no longer care much about the recipe amounts or what I'm adding, which is probably in the spirit of the thing. You can throw the frozen BBQ in there and it will melt and simmer fine. Shred some chicken if you want (rotisserie is okay but you can taste the flavor). I have used white-trash mustard from a bottle for the "mustard" BBQ sauce, and who knows what else.

It's hard to mess up. And delicious.

Being Texas Summertime now, I really like having salads at dinner. I like having salads pretty much all year, but I really like it now.

I'll probably make a big salad to go with the ribs and maybe brisket i'll be BBQing this weekend.

And the lettuce that works best with Summer Salads is-

Iceberg Lettuce!

Oh, i know Iceberg Lettuce is supposed to be -

the White Trash Lettuce of Deplorable Garbage people, however-

there are few things more delightful than biting into a forkful of a cold, crisp Iceberg Lettuce Green Salad.

Yum yum.

81 In yesterday's Friday message, our bishop discussed Job and his afflictions. It's worthwhile to remember that God is always with us, even in times when it seems everything has gone wrong.

It has taken me many years to discover this, but so often what looks like an unmitigated evil brings about a good that otherwise could never have been.

I am very grateful that my eyes have been opened to this at last.

Yes, it's a Walmart exclusive.

But I love it.

VIA - is your smoker a side by side or upright ?

93 Trying to decide what errands I need to run. Need cat chow and litter; Walmart or Petco, and I go to WM early on Sunday. I was considering visiting the pipe and cigar shop in the suburbs, but I just bought a nice vintage pipe on Etsy and have lots of tobacco and supplies. Nor does the car need food.

Turns out every work morning I drive very near the place where my mother lived for some years before she married my father. I'm thinking I might cruise over there today -- the area is still pretty good -- and walk around to see the address in daylight. I'll try to imagine what the area was like in 1948.

For years I've been concocting and bringing to work a "dill pickle salad": iceberg lettuce chopped up, slices of radish and bits of green onion, with some dill pickle juice sprinkled on it and dill pickle slices all through. I load it into a Tupperware bowl, pop it into the refrigerator at work, and have it as part of my lunch. It's sort of marinated by then, less crunchy, but cold and salty.

--

I recently heard a sermon on the story about the cleft of the rock. The obvious connection is what it was preached on, and it was a good sermon, but I noticed something else that I don't think I've ever heard preached.

The Lord told Moses to stand on a rock - a strong, solid place - and when God passed by he'd put him in the cleft of the rock and cover him with his hand until his glory had passed because no human can see his face, and Moses would be able to see God's back but not his front.

I had never thought about it in terms of providence before, but it really resonated with me. You are unable to see God at work (his front) until after his work is done, but his hand is covering you and you'll see him after he has passed.

No joy.

Yeah, but that's why you have a basement. And there's this: The path of destruction of a tornado is narrow. Your house might be fine while your neighbor's gets flattened. (Or, of course, vice versa.) It's not like a 200-mile-wide swath of high winds, flooding, and rain lasting for days.

IMO it really doesn't matter if you're into wrapping your cook you'll use what you've got on hand.

Butcher paper is what God intended for brisket. People who use foil are Godless heathen, who probably drink Bud Light and shop at Target.

Though that's one criticism of Iceberg Lettuce that I don't get.

Iceberg lettuce has plenty of flavor.

Maybe it's something like you see with cilantro, where some folks go all nuts with the "it tastes like soap!!!!" thing. And other folks like me go "what in the world are you talking about."

So, perhaps Iceberg Lettuce has a flavor that only the Tastebud Elect may perceive.

So I enjoy my stuff, trade it out when I get bored, and work enough to have a really nice cool stuff / free time ratio. My next big ticket will probably be a bigger place in the country - to enjoy my stuff in peace and enjoy the absence of others even more.

Tornadoes follow somewhat regular paths. There's a saying in Michigan that they rarely strike at the union of two rivers - something about the air currents above the water turns them aside.

The area north of Lansing sees regular high winds because it is on a plateau. They've been planting turbines up there because of it. South of that area, we get winds, but never tornadoes.

There are reference charts on this.

220 Foil? Butcher paper?

I find both totally unnecessary.

With a good wood pellet grill and a bluetooth thermometer, you can just leave your brisket as it is throughout the cook.

Also, wrapping makes your meat soggy and I prefer a nice bark with juicy, perfectly cooked meat inside.

My theory on wrapping is it was developed by guys who ran BBQ places and were dealing with lots of meat at one time.

So, this was the crutch they developed. In fact, now that I think about it, some folks actually call wrapping your meat..."the crutch'.

So many times I have had things like this happen to me - you have no idea what is going on, and then you look back and *of course* things had to happen that way. There was no other way a particular good could have happened otherwise.

So many examples. It was hard for me at first to accept that I just have to trust God instead of using my supposedly big smart brain to figure things out. That's why I can't follow the news - I can't change it, I'm wrong more often then I'm right, so I'm just going to give it up to God and focus on friends, family and the little things I can do.

Hurricanes are not that predictable. What you do get with them is warnings days in advance, the projected path, etc. Though they can horribly surprise you. Betsy in 1965 was heading up toward the Carolinas when it paused, reversed course, came back down across FL, and smashed into NO. (First day of school that year. I remember it well.)

Sure, you know that a given area is prone to hurricanes -- Gulf Coast, FL east coast, the Carolinas -- but not when you'll be brushed by one.

I'm just sick of this whole area. I need a serious change. Sick I am of people telling me how wonderful it is here, the music and the food, "I love summer," etc. Stuff it, people. I'm fleeing.

It has taken me many years to discover this, but so often what looks like an unmitigated evil brings about a good that otherwise could never have been.

@81 As someone who is an Orthodox Christian, I definitely agree with this, but would also add that when we go through tribulations, there's at least part of us which can be thankful for them because they have the effect of being able to purify and deepen our faith. It's a hard lesson, but something I've lived daily for the last year, at the very least. I don't know where or how the "other side" of this all is, but without Orthodoxy, I don't know that I could get through this. I've also been drawn to reading Rod Dreher on his Substack since March or so; he's going through something similar (breakup of a long marriage) and he's said the same thing about being Orthodox through this.

Not having a good morning. Puppies woke me at 4:20. They had torn their pen apart. Called Her Majesty at 5:00 because she has an 8:00 judging time in Oklahoma City today. Decided to go to 7:30 Mass. Car needed gas.

Thought as I arrived that going to Confession would be a good idea. There was a line of about 20 women, so I had to ditch that idea. Elected not to receive Communion, which was unnecessarily scrupulous.

Came home. The septic system is out and the breaker on the main panel is the one that's tripping.

367 when we go through tribulations, there's at least part of us which can be thankful for them because they have the effect of being able to purify and deepen our faith.

Posted by: Prime Sister at May 27, 2023 10:30 AM (tQL7r)

I've been thinking about this recently, because sometimes I'm the one who is not communicating with others. It's not that I don't have time, it's not that I don't have means, and it's even not that I have no desire. It's something else, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

In part there seems to be a component of it that has to do with the lack of urgency, even though, frankly, time is an illusion, and we NEVER know how much time we have, so we tend to think it's infinite.

Anyway, point being, if someone you love isn't communicating with you, it's always hard, but it's also very possible the amount of worry created over it is not really warranted. Only thing I can think of to do is be at peace with it, let the other person do what they do, and we continue to do what we do, which may or may not include reaching out to those we love, even if they won't return the effort.

Also need to properly install a whole house surge protector up near the service entry.

eggs are tasty. So are turkey eggs. Mostly it's what you feed them impacts how the eggs taste. We had chickens, and when we would feed them fresh alfalfa for a period of a few weeks, the egg yolks would be a red-orange with the most marvelous taste.

I had one of those life changing accidents twelve years ago. My experience is that you just get used to the pain.

The fact is that it hurts all the time if you think about it so I find things that can absorb my attention fully for long periods of time where I don't have to move around much.

I used to be a morning person and woke every day with an attitude of peace and gratitude. I try and not think about those days as it just makes me depressed.

Stay distracted!!!!

Here is an idea. Make mini-pallets out of structural plastic, or pressed wood composite, sized to fit various appliances, but only about 2 inches tall, and sell a small hand-pumped pallet jack to move them (or offer the pallet jacks as rentals). The pallets could provided with snap-on face plates to make them blend with the appliance or with house decor, as desired. Then you could move major appliances at will, with little effort.

Global industries or Grainger have the industrial type casters including the non marking kind. They hold up better over time as some of the cheaper ones get brittle, the caster housings bend, and the collect muck in their wide-open bearing raceways.
