Progressivism In A Nutshell: Defund The Police, Decriminalize Most Crime, Then Sue The Auto Companies For Causing Car Theft?

This is a glimpse into the chaotically organized minds of the progressive movement in America. They purposefully conflate cause and effect, they ignore longstanding logical constructions like correlation vs. causality, and their only goal is the ultimate goal of all progressive movements (otherwise known as socialist/communist movements): the destruction of personal freedom and autonomy from government.

But sometimes they overstep, and even people who aren't paying attention notice the profoundly idiotic things they do. How it is an automobile manufacturer's fault that criminals are stealing these cars is a question that needs to be answered.

The reality of course is that these government officials are shifting responsibility for crime from their failed policies, from the criminals who perpetrate those crimes, and onto the deep pockets of large corporations.

Statistically it is obvious that some brand of car is going to be the most stolen. That is driven in part by the relative ease of theft, and the popularity of the car. All modern cars have reasonable anti-theft systems, but those are just a nice bonus. Making the car companies legally liable for their effectiveness is just nuts, but that is what passes for governance in progressive hellholes such as Milwaukee, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Seattle.

Carjackings Surge in Democrat Cities... So They're Suing the Car Companies!?

City authorities in Milwaukee, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Seattle – all Democrat-run cities – are suing car makers Kia and Hyundai for “not doing enough to prevent [their] cars being stolen,” amid skyrocketing rates of carjackings.
Baltimore is the most recent city to sue the two car companies, with Democrat Mayor Brandon M. Scott, claiming, “[Kia and Hyundai] have left our residents vulnerable to crime and are significantly burdening our police resources.”

The article isn't clear whether it is carjackings (a violent crime) or simple car theft (non-violent crime...sort of) that is skyrocketing. If certain cars are more vulnerable to theft, then it is up to the consumer to make the decision whether to purchase one, or another brand with more robust features. That's called a free market!

Of course we could just ban TikTok and that will make the problem go away...right?

In late 2021, a trend involved a group called the “Kia Boyz” began on the Chinese Communist Party’s influence app TikTok.
Originally from Milwaukee, the group posted videos on the social media site demonstrating the ease with which one could steal a Kia or Hyundai. Since then, the trend has gone viral and been copied across the United States.

I have a great idea! Maybe the car companies should offer a free pistol and some training with every purchase. That way more law-abiding drivers can defend themselves in the absence of reasonable government policing.

And here is a downright crazy idea...maybe those blue cities should simply enforce the law. Keep criminals in jail instead of releasing them without bail. And then prosecute them vigorously, because car theft and carjacking is an obvious signal that the rule of law has broken down. It is only a matter of time before the explosion in one kind of crime extends to all kinds of crime.

Oh...wait! That's already happening in those cities! Who could have guessed?

21 Oh, a few weeks ago there was quite a discussion on DU about how car manufacturers were responsible for "cutting corners" in the name of profit, and how government and consumers should get money from them. And I know I saw a Dem councilwoman or similar in a recent video complaining it must be car manufacturer's fault for all the catalytic convertor thefts going on...they must be negligent for putting so valuable a part in what must be an easy, unsecured place to steal from!

Car theft should be punished the same way. If you steal my car-I can't get to work, buy food, get to the doctor etc. After the first dozen were hanged, car theft would stop.

38 Thieves are hacking into vehicle's computers now and injecting their own code to unlock the vehicle, remote start it and then drive off with it.

All they need is access to the vehicle's electrical/wiring/data system... typically by tapping into exposed wires like in the headlights.

They'll remove a headlight one night, come back the next and make off with the vehicle.

An interesting thing happened in Chicago as a result of illegal immigrants invading. The black communities are being bumped from social services waiting lists and it hasn’t gone over well. One “community organizer “ noted out loud we are bringing unvetted and potential criminals into black communities already “riddled with crime “. They also protested that Americans should be given housing, social support, etc and once they are taken care of, then we look to assist others. There is a lot there to unpack- 1. Admitting black crime problem, 2. No other way to say it, but the sentiment, even in a very twisted way, is America First (gee, who else thinks America first?), and 3. It seems the lemmings are not in favor of this open society concept brought to them via the woke progressives. Could they lose the black vote as a result? Could this chasm widen and offer a chance to address the root cause of many urban problems?

I think a local pizza place did something similar, not delivering to a high crime area. The courts got involved somehow (Feds?) and blocked it, because the area was mostly Black, so it was discriminatory. The pizza place could have a radius delivery (10 miles) but not pick and choose zones within that radius.

53 IIRC some of the Kias and Hyundais that use a key fob like device to start the vehicle (not a "remote start") are shaped exactly like a standard USB thumb drive slot. Originally that's what a lot of thieves were using. Again, on certain models.

I was in Germany (and a few other European countries) this winter, and saw various little ride share scooters all over the place in dense metro areas. Didn't seem like there was much destruction/theft/vandalism of them there.

61 Portland managed to become the #1 city for car theft a few years ago because the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled that driving a stolen car was not evidence that you had something to do with stealing the car.

"How did you get this car?"

"Fred lent it to me."

"Who's Fred?"

"Dunno."

This had little effect on the Oregon Court of Appeals, who all lived in wealthy neighborhoods where car theft wasn't a problem, but it absolutely ravaged working-class neighborhoods in Portland.

Amazingly, this was viewed as so egregious that the legislature passed a law eliminating that excuse.

Horrible hijacking in N.O. a while back. During a hijacking an elderly lady's arm got tangled up in the seat belt strap. She was dragged and her arm was pulled off as the three teen hijackers sped away. She died of course. They are charging the teens as adults.

My old Chevelle would run with the key removed. Turn the key to "start" and simply pull it out. You'd need it to shut it off, obviously.

I recall starting the car, remembering something I needed in the trunk, getting out with the key, opening up the trunk but left the keys on the bumper. Started to drive away and looked down at the ignition where the key was "supposed" to be.

That could have really sucked if I didn't stop and fetch the keys off the bumper.

The legal system pretty much always existed to protect criminals - to ensure that they had their day in court and could be found guilty by evidence and due process, not just some guy going "we knew it was him".

It was allowed to do so, because it also provided justice for most people. The wheels might have ground slow sometimes, but by and large, it found enough criminals and delivered punishments that satisfied the victims.

Now that it has forgotten the latter half of its equation, people will no longer respect it and start seeking their own justice again. Expect vigilantes, whether it's masked men playing Batman in their off hours or real life Boondock Saints.

The progressive mind is actually quite easy to understand.

It is driven by a knee-jerk opposition to enlightenment rationalism and all of its derivatives.

Our world is objective and external, so theirs is subjective and internal. Belief is reality. There is no "the truth", only "your truth". It's magical thinking with the serial numbers filed off, and like other forms of magical thinking, does not recognize the linkage between cause and effect. If something bad happens, it is the fault of witches, sorcerers, or in the more modern forms, "wreckers" or perhaps "Magas".

The oppositional nature means that, provided with the same inputs, they will come to the exact opposite conclusion that we do, like clockwork. Their thought process, though alien, is predictable.

They're also being used as tools to foment a potential race war. Every time a black is killed while engaged in some criminal activity the whole grievance machine fires up. However the black community at large seems to be fine with that part of the arrangement. It's a choice they've made. I'm OK with that.
