GE - genuinely evil
Our Whirlpool kitchen appliances have been (knocks on wood) fairly trouble free. The water filters are horribly expensive tho'. And I've found they are beginning to suffer from QC issues (they leak) which makes the ice maker and the water dispenser worthless until replaced. Kinda irrelevant to the point you're making but in the case of the former you can wash dishes by hand and in the case of the latter it's debilitating to your lifestyle. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at May 14, 2023 02:08 PM (DhOHl) 14

One day, it didn't start. Motor was fried. I replaced it with a modern one (which I won't name because they all suck) rather than have the Maytag fixed, a decision I regret to this day. Once Upon A Time, auto companies had a 3yr/36kmile warranty. A lot of shoddy design could limp across that finish line. Then Kia, out of desperation, upped it to 10/100.
That forced some actual system and reliability engineering. Nobody in the appliance business has done a similar move yet. Until that happens, we'll live with shoddy. Posted by: 2009Refugee at May 14, 2023 02:22 PM (8AONa) 42

My washer and dryer both took a shit in the same week. Washer cycle started screwing up because of the door lock for retards, then the level sensors went on the fritz, then control board took a holiday.
The labor necessary to repair these items is more than a new washer and the service company recommended buying a new washer. Dryer stopped heating and smelled like a lint fire. Both ended up in the dumpster. Posted by: Dr. Bone at May 14, 2023 02:29 PM (KVGVf) 56

A couple of years ago I was working with a guy who was writing a proposal for a grant to develop new technologies for washing and drying clothes to reduce energy and water consumption.
It's amazing the crazy stuff that gets funded. Guy had proposal for a dryer that drew a vacuum on the drying drum to evaporate all the water without using heat. Posted by: pawn at May 14, 2023 02:48 PM (kYVzH) Posted by: polynikes at May 14, 2023 02:50 PM (WmV84) 94

The penny pinching (per small part) is a symptom of the MBAs running companies.
Example: Southwest Airlines last winter. The MBAs run the company and think they can run people like small parts. It doesn't work and when failure occurs there were spectacular cascades in the case of SWA. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at May 14, 2023 02:51 PM (QYppa) 96

Our top load washer doesn't have a detergent dispensing tray, you just add the detergent on top of the clothes. It has a bleach dispenser that I have to tell the aides coming in to use. Actually I have to amend my written 'care instructions' to tell them that top load washers get filled to the top of the holes in the drum, not just halfway like a front loader. The agitator is not 100% square, nor is the machine 100% leveled, so it will get unbalanced on the spin cycle fairly often with only a partial load.

JIT logistics is the single biggest non-political contributor to the ongoing 2020s economic catastrophe, larger even than some of the outlying political factors. All the fragile system needed to collapse was a little push.
What the idiotic MBAs that are so enamored of JIT failed to understand is that it came out of the Japanese keiretsu system where all the producers and consumers have the same ultimate boss and therefore operate at a high level of trust. Time/aggravation v. cost of new appliance
We just went through that with our dryer. Quit heating suddenly. Husband spent hours diagnosing the problem, disassembled the dryer, replaced some electronics and heating element. Put the dryer back together; still wouldn't work. Turned out the electrical outlet had gone bad. Replaced that and heating again. Yay. Then the drum wouldn't turn properly--sort of worked but you couldn't put many clothes in it at once. Dismantled the dryer AGAIN and replaced all of the stuff that makes the drum turn. Seems fixed now!! More aggravating than a service call--assuming we could get anyone to show up--but much less expensive than a new dryer (which probably wouldn't work as well anyway). The electricals in a SubZero 561 are brutally simple. Probably cost more to run than a newer one. The big issues are corrosion on some of the panels and I think the insulation around the ice maker water supply has broken down enough that it freezes. I could probably get the interior panels off, run them off for sandblasting and powder coating, and redo the insulation while they're out, but given the schedule the powder coaters I know work on, that's two or three weeks. My best and oldest appliance is a Tappan deluxe gas range that dates back to the early to mid 1950's. It belonged to my dad's uncle. Uncle George died in 1987 and bought that stove when it was brand new. It sat in his old crumbling shack until 2019 when his son died and the heirs said to us "take whatever you want". That stove is big, heavy and awesome. It was filthy and Hubbymayhem and I spent two months on cleaning and repairs.

Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at May 14, 2023 03:42 PM (Wy1BU) Check joints and flexing for injuries, and check for scabs and bites. She could have gotten into a fight, and if you find scabs or oozing spots, get a good topical antibiotic on it to try to prevent an abscess. You can check online to see if what you have right now is toxic to cats. topical antibiotics are often absorbed by the skin and will work directly. If you can head off an abscess you will all be happier, and it will go directly to a hard cyst. The vet can give her an injectable long duration antibiotic if it seems needful. My little black tom got bit a lot and wound up with so many abscesses that he wound up shaved and sewn up like a baseball with Penrose drains, and it was touch and go for a while. Not a big fan of GE either, but I did buy a used GE dehumidifer at a pawn shop three years ago. It immediately started leaking due to a crack in the bucket, but that was not their fault. I glued it back together and ever since the unit has been performing flawlessly, impressive since it is in almost constant use here in tropical central Florida. Only drawback is that the bucket is too small and I have to empty it all too frequently, but hey what can you expect for $30?
