Fresh Off Its Triumph of Creating Covid-19, the NIH Tries to Top Itself by Re-Starting Bat Virus Research

And Peter Daszak of EcoHealth, who ran a disinformation campaign against America claiming the lab leak theory was a racist conspiracy theory -- because he, of course, funded the lab where covid-19 was created and escaped from -- will be receiving taxpayer money again.

Three years after then-President Donald Trump pressured the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to suspend a research grant to a U.S. group studying bat coronaviruses with partners in China, the agency has restarted the award.

The new 4-year grant is a stripped-down version of the original grant to the EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit research organization in New York City, providing $576,000 per year. That 2014 award included funding for controversial experiments that mixed parts of different bat viruses related to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the coronavirus that sparked a global outbreak in 2002--04, and included a subaward to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The new award omits those studies, and also imposes extensive new accounting rules on EcoHealth, which drew criticism from government auditors for its bookkeeping practices.

But EcoHealth's embattled director, Peter Daszak, says his group is pleased: "Now we have the ability to finally get back to work," he [threatens].

The idea of NIH and EcoHealth "getting back to work" feels to me like Dennis Miller's thoughts about East and West Germany re-uniting: I wasn't a fan of their previous work, and I'm not sure I'll like the new stuff much better.

After NIH halted the grant in April 2020, many scientists protested the move as political interference with scientific peer review. Now, they are welcoming the grant's resumption. "It is long overdue. Unfortunately, the original cancellation reflects the ongoing partisan politics where first Trump and now many Republicans are attacking science unfairly," says Nobel Prize winner Richard Roberts of New England Biolabs. In May 2020, he helped organize a letter from 77 Nobel laureates protesting the grant's suspension.

The absolute entitlement and arrogance. They believe they have a right to extract money from us.

I guess that's why they're Democrats.

I can remember a time when they said this research would help them should an outbreak occur. Sure - help them. We've all had a front row seat to how much B.S. that is.

These people are enthralled with the idea of playing God. In creating more lethal versions of viruses, they see themselves as creating life itself. If there ever was a concept of blasphemy today - this is it, and they should be punished brutally for it.

It sure as hell was, as is this. There is no such thing as taxpayer money *without* political strings and interference. Free, unencumbered money from a government does not exist. Not here, not anywhere. This is one of many, many reasons that the government should not be involved in scientific research at all in the first place.

Barring that, you have to come to terms with the fact that the conditions of your grant can - and will - change at a moment's notice and that it will always be related to political expedience.

What's particularly amusing - darkly amusing - about that is that it was the second attempt. The same people - EcoHealth and its buddies - tried to get funding before getting it from the NIH. Reading the rejection letter was like reading a professor's commentary on a paper handed in by an ambitious but quite stupid freshman who was thoroughly convinced of his own brilliance.

They took it in stride, though. They went and got the money from NIH. But DARPA is known to often take pretty serious risks - and this was *way* too reckless for DARPA to consider. Not so for the NIH.

With Tucker Carlson no longer in the time slot, “blue-chip” advertisers are reportedly returning, even if the viewers are not — the replacement program “Fox News Tonight” is reportedly getting a third of the audience Carlson drew.

“Since Carlson’s stunning exit last month, a timeslot that has been shunned by many Madison Avenue stalwarts seems as if it is being embraced. Procter & Gamble, one of the nation’s largest and most influential advertisers, has been running ads in ‘Fox News Tonight,’ the network’s new 8 p.m. program, for female-skewing products like Venus razor blades by Gillette and Secret underarm deodorant,” Variety reported. “Also showing up in commercial breaks: Novo Nordisk’s trendy medication Ozempic, and Scotts Miracle-Gro.”

The stated goal wasn't bioweapons. I also don't think the real goal was bioweapons. I think the stated goal - that they wanted to harvest large quantities of novel coronaviruses from bat caves in China and then perform GoF to build a large basis for vaccine development against SARS and other SARS-like illnesses such as MERS - was the actual goal.

It was just reckless and was way too likely to blow up in their - and our - faces. The arrogance of EcoHealth and its partners blinded them to the risks. "It isn't *too* risky, 'cause we're really smart and careful and masters of the universe and so are our brilliant Chinese counterparts." I very much think that it was hubris, not a plan to make bioweapons. Coronaviruses would make lousy bioweapons anyway. Too contagious and impossible to control - as we have seen.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 09, 2023 01:49 PM (O4oKn)

They're creating new variants on diseases to understand the process. The supposed benefit of this understanding really only applies to artificially created diseases, not natural mutation. So creating a bioweapon to be prepared to handle bioweapons is the core logic.

159 From a military perspective bioweapons make little sense. You can't control when it's fired, you can't control who it's fired at, you can't control how much damage it does.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at May 09, 2023 01:45 PM (eYoxG)

Unless you run a giant worldwide experiment on a virus that does relatively innocuous damage but still creates a crisis, then collect as much data on DNA of the infected as possible, monitor behaviors, roll out some "cures" in control-based trials that allows one to see who can be "cured" (if anyone) and who can be made more susceptible, then engineer your next viruses with the targeted knowledge now well in hand.

Or maybe nah bro.

Depends on your goals...Extremely contagious? check, though there's a large contingent of the population naturally immune. Unless it's been modified to get around said immunity and boost lethality. Then the world (if that's your target) has a real problem.

It's a multi-variable problem. There's something else Africa has going for it: high temperature and a young population. Demographics could also be an explanation, and are probably a factor. Young people don't really get COVID, at least not severely.

But the Ivermectin, as we have learned from the studies in South America, only helped.

226 One could argue that the very late Roman and Byzantine era were like that. The very late roman period saw a lot of mercs employed. At least in the early Byzantine era, this continued. My knowledge of the entirety of the Byzantine era is sketchy, so I am not sure if it got worse or better.

Foreign mercenaries and administrators(Jews for Europeans, Armenians for the Ottomans, Chinese in Asia) solves for the problem of getting competent help that has their status dependent on the monarch. As opposed to being the scion of some duke who might one day want to overthrow you.

Leads to other consequences, but the local aristocracy will always hate them and keep them in check in some measure.

People always have an urge to view things through their own lens. This means they think about public policy through the lens of a normal, mentally-sound individual.

"What would *I* do better, to help the most people have the greatest opportunity to do better, too," they say.

People go about executing that value through their whole lives.

So they can't understand why public policy never seems to reflect that value.

It's because politicians and bureaucrats aren't thinking about it at all. It's only "What would *I* do better, to help my faction have the greatest opportunity to help me do better some more?"

Once you think about America from the viewpoint of a total psycho scumbag, everything makes a lot more sense.

It's the natural result of aristocratic/bureaucratic governance.

The upside to monarchy is that the monarch wants his realm to be prestigious, meaning wealthy and powerful. Using Saudi Arabia as an example, the aristocracy there(mostly relatives of the monarchy and so on) would not seek to reform their economy in any meaningful sense. The king and Crown Prince would, since they have an incentive to care about the big picture.

299 I Voted for Trump As confessionals go this essay by Kevin Young is a doozy:

I was raised Republican, indoctrinated into the Grand Ol’ Party from a young age, and baptized into the waters of latent McCarthyism. I sipped at the fountain of Pro-Life Rallies and Reaganomics. . . .

But COVID shook him: As COVID took hold in 2020, I didn’t recognize my Christian and Conservative brother and sisters. Their callous response to the health of others shocked me. All told, I lost 19 people to COVID. All of them would be alive had Conservatives and Christians practiced “Love Thy Neighbor"

What finally caused the scales to fall from his eyes was the murder of George Floyd: George Floyd’s story wrecked me, and it wrecked my belief system. I have never watched something so egregious, so inhumane, so sinful in real time. I recognize now that this is because my blinders were on. I had built my wall so high as to be unable to see the world on the other side of it. My wall wasn’t protecting me, it was hiding me… insulating me… preventing me from seeing the reality of the oppressed and the marginalized.
