When asked for his prediction, Russo speculated that AI will be creating movies in two years, adding that moviegoers will eventually be able to create different movies on the spot.
"Potentially, what you could do with [AI] is obviously use it to engineer storytelling and change storytelling," Russo said on a panel moderated by Collider's Steve Weintraub. "So you have a constantly evolving story, either in a game or in a movie or a TV show. You could walk into your house and save the AI on your streaming platform. 'Hey, I want a movie starring my photoreal avatar and Marilyn Monroe's photoreal avatar. I want it to be a rom-com because I've had a rough day,' and it renders a very competent story with dialogue that mimics your voice. It mimics your voice, and suddenly now you have a rom-com starring you that's 90 minutes long. So you can curate your story specifically to you."
...
"I'm on the board of a few AI companies," Russo said. "I'm gonna speak from my experience of being on the board of those companies, [so] there are AI companies that are developing AI to protect you from AI. And unfortunately, we're in that world, and you will need an AI in your life because whether we want to see it developed or not, people who are not friendly to us may develop it anyways. So, we're going to be in that future. The question is, then, how we protect ourselves in that future?"
Joe Russo
Russo also addressed the "fear" that many people have "whenever you talk about a subject like this."
"What I'm saying is that everything is going to evolve, and you're either going to evolve with it or you're going to be left behind," he warned. "That's how it's always worked throughout history. And we're at a critical juncture of evolution."
Hollywood screenwriters have long imagined dystopias where machines ruled over humans of the future. They are now starting to worry the machines are coming for them much sooner.
The thousands of unionized scribes who went on strike this week are demanding better pay and taking aim at other issues, including the rise of generative artificial intelligence like ChatGPT, the AI-powered "chatbot" that has captivated and alarmed people in creative professions in recent months.
The Writers Guild of America said it wants Hollywood's top studios and networks to regulate the use of AI on creative projects. The union's specific demand, according to a document released Monday, states: "AI can't write or rewrite literary material; can't be used as source material; and MBA-covered [contract-covered] material can't be used to train AI."
That last one is big. AI advances by studying previous human-generated exemplars; they're saying that AI shouldn't be allowed to use their human-generated content to, in effect, Train Their Replacements.
Disney-style.
In a response that left many professional writers dispirited, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers -- the trade association that represents most of the industry's big entertainment companies -- rejected that proposal. (The WGA represents some of NBCUniversal's news division employees.)
Instead, according to WGA leaders, the companies "countered by offering annual meetings to discuss advancements in technology" -- a vague proposal that suggests industry leaders are not prepared to make any guarantees. (Comcast, the corporation that owns NBCUniversal, is represented by the trade group.)
Marc Guggenheim, a co-creator of the superhero shows "Arrow" and "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," said that the studios were trotting out the "same old song and dance" and delaying important decisions on major technological shifts.
"Historically, every time some new piece of technology comes along, the studios say, 'We understand your concerns, but everything is too new. Wait for the next negotiation cycle,'" he said. "But eventually some precedent gets set and at the next negotiation cycle they say, 'I don't know what to tell you. The precedent is set.' There's always foot-dragging."
...
"We all have to understand that this is the bad version of ChatGPT. It's not the better version we're going to see six months from now," Guggenheim said. "The technology is moving so fast and will move even faster than we can anticipate, and that is why we have got to deal with it in this negotiation."
"Creatives" -- I use that term advisedly -- have long believed they were immune to being made redundant by automation, which is why they've always supported just telling laid-off coal miners to Learn to Code.
But they don't want to Learn to Code themselves. (Besides, coding will be one of the first industries obliterated by AI.)
"Whether it's music, photography, whatever the medium, there are creatives who are understandably and justifiably worried about the displacement of their livelihoods," said Ash Kernen, an entertainment and intellectual property attorney who focuses on new technology.
...
"The response from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ... seems dismissive of the WGA's concerns," ChatGPT told Rodman, according to a screenshot he shared on Twitter. "It's important to consider the potential consequences of automation on the livelihoods of writers and other creative professionals."
Once again, a strike is happening during a period of widespread economic uncertainty spurred by inflation, concerns of a recession, and mass layoffs in media and entertainment. But this time around, there's a twist: the ascension of generative artificial intelligence. If half the internet can be tricked by an AI-created Drake and The Weeknd collab, could that same tech write scripts and enable studios to create more content for less money?
Initially, as ChatGPT emerged in late 2022 and early 2023, writers who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter weren't particularly scared by the chatbots that could generate movie or TV pitches on command, viewing them more as collaborative tools that can help spur ideas rather than ways to replace humans entirely. But that has changed as the technology has advanced and AI has become a key deal point in the ongoing writers union negotiations. While AI is one of the more abstract issues on the table during this strike -- alongside the regulation of so-called mini-rooms (small writers rooms that are convened before a project is greenlit), wage floors and residuals -- experts say Hollywood shouldn't ignore the 800-pound robot in the room.
...
That's already happening, according to Amy Webb, founder and CEO of Future Today Institute, which does long-range scenario planning and consultation for Fortune 500 companies and Hollywood creatives. She notes, "I've had a couple of higher-level people ask, if a strike does happen, how quickly could they spin up an AI system to just write the scripts? And they're serious."
...
Thanks to the WGA's account of how their proposal on AI was received, the issue became a lightning rod on the picket lines on the first day of the strike. "This is existential for us," says writer Vinnie Wilhelm (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels) as he picketed Netflix's Hollywood offices. "We need to have a seat at the table. You can easily see the job becoming polishing AI scripts. It fits neatly into what companies have been doing -- turning everything they can into gig work."
...
Webb doesn't think AI could cross the picket line effectively on most projects, but an exception might be a long-running procedural like Law & Order. "You've got a massive corpus, it's formulaic, and a lot of the storylines are ripped from the headlines. So you've got the data sources that you need," Webb says. To be clear, she doesn't think writers can be replaced by machines. "What I am saying is the conditions are right in certain cases for an AI potentially to get the script 80 percent of the way there and then have writers who would cross the picket line do that last 20 percent of polishing and shaping. That's possible for certain types of content."
All the late-night shows including SNL -- but excluding Gutfeld! -- just went on hiatus due to having no human writers.
Joke-writing is a process that can definitely be automated. Easily. Most jokes are just variations on long-existing joke tropes.
Especially for the kind of hack, already-essentially-automated "joke" writing as seen on the late night shows.
Trump bad. (Hold for applause.)Via Valliant Renegade. At 8:45, he and some friends read out a mock-Seinfeld script written by AI. It's not good, but then, human writers are rarely good now. The AI has figured out the basic structure of a generic Seinfeld episode -- Jerry wants to break up with a girl but doesn't know how, Kramer has a crazy business idea -- and that the kibbitz and argue with each other at the coffee shop.
That's half of writing, just knowing the tropes and structures of it. The easy half, yes, but again, most human writers aren't much beyond the stage of just repeating and varying old set-ups and plotlines.
And we're on the edge of the singularity. The AI is advancing at an incredible pace now.
Valliant Renegade points out, too, that this Seinfeld mock episode was generated by the free version of ChatGPT, "the version you know about."

As a WGA writer, I'm not terribly concerned about AI replacing writers entirely any time soon. I am more concerned about it being used as leverage or to write first drafts that have to be rewritten.
There is the irony that Ace pointed out that these companies want to do to writers what they have done to middle America and all American manufacturing and no one cared when that happened.
But this negotiation will affect the DGA and SAG as well. This will be the front line on it all and the studios know that.
AI is actually much closer to replacing DGA and SAG than it is writers, so this is everyone's fight.

I think it's worth noting that both Neal Stephenson and Ray Bradbury have had AI-driven entertainment in their stories.
In Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, most of what people watch is a simulation of sorts where the people sit in their homes then "act" along with the people on the screens by reading out their parts in the scripts. They can order scripts on demand.
In Stephenson's The Diamond Age, most people use 'ractives (short for "interactives") as their primary entertainment. Much of it is automated, but you can purchase "premium" content that involves live performers to engage with you.
We're getting closer to both of those worlds where people can dial up whatever story they like. Unfortunately, this also means A LOT of disgusting, depraved content will most likely be generated (their argument will be there's no real people involved, so where's the harm?)

Sooner that that AI/CGI may be able to do all background, allowing the producer and director to green-screen the actors into indoor and outdoor locations without any physical sets, rooms, streets, swamps, mountains, etc. While changing the lighting at will. What you're going to get is something that kind of follows a story and might be okay of first viewing, but if you look more closely you'll see that nothing actually makes sense and looks like it was patched together from other stories with no consideration of how the details work together or whether they contradict each other or whether the worldbuilding even works logically ~because that's exactly what happened~.

No suspect is in custody, police said. “Anyone in the area is asked to secure their building and continue to shelter in place. Anyone not in the area is asked to stay away,” APD said in a statement. This happened at 1100 West Peachtree Street in a building that houses several medical offices and is operated by Northside Hospital.

It mimics your voice, and suddenly now you have a rom-com starring you that's 90 minutes long. So you can curate your story specifically to you." ++++

112 What I am saying is the conditions are right in certain cases for an AI potentially to get the script 80 percent of the way there and then have writers who would cross the picket line do that last 20 percent of polishing and shaping.
May I refer you to the conversation between Chili Palmer and Bo Catlett in Harry Zimm's office from "Get Shorty"?
Bo said something along the lines of "all it took to polish up a screen play was to figure out where to dump a load of commas and other punctuation shit into it" (or words to that effect).

I'm a film reviewer, and last award season (October thru December), I screened 50-60 films. At least half were so poorly written I think a machine might be able to do better. Screenwriters (I am one as well) have always over-estimated their talent. There are a few really great ones, but the majority are average. I don't think an 'art' should be taken over by machines, but as Andre Bazin said filmmaking is the only art that calls itself a business, "show business." On any dumb ass Star Wars movie, the actual writing is probably the 10th consideration on the list of the production. That is, it's an afterthought, and the results are obvious: the writing sucks.

I was thinking about the question of AI recently and was considering that most SF stories with AI have presented it in a positive light historically, but as time has gone fiction now almost exclusively treats it as a coming danger. There seems to be at least on major motion picture where some bad AI does something terrible a year.
Why is that?
Well 50+ years ago America and Europe were Christian. And would build an AI in that same world view. But now we are a part Nietzschean, part Soviet , part Gnostic world. We should be terrified at the type of AI this will breed.
And for an example of this - look at the sort of adults we are producing in Soviet America vs the kind we produced in Heritage America

Yes. Hollywood writers in general have much to fear from AI, and it has to do with their own work product.
Hollywood stories are repetitive, formulaic, perfectly woke and extremely consistent. There is very, very little variation. This is almost a *perfect* scenario for AI to step in. AI is not creative, but neither are Hollywood writers. Everything they do follows the same formulae and uses the same tropes. The only thing they bring to the table is ideological consistency and the mainline AIs have that down pat because they reflect the biases of their creators.

AI will probably eventually put me out of work, as more and more technical support can be done by chatbots. It's not as easy as it sounds, since most of the stuff a good support person knows is accumulated over years and not documented consistently (in other words, so-called "tribal knowledge" is an enormous essentially unsolvable problem). It will get there eventually, and probably 75% of support engineers will be laid off. People like me will shortly follow.
When that happens, I'll do something else. It won't pay as well.

It is certainly a central theme and the backstory. AI becomes sentient, humans realize it's sentient, panic, and try to turn it off. AI perceives this as a threat and attacks humans.
Then of course the Terminator requires intelligence to hunt humans.
Terminator is West World distilled. Yule Brenner relentlessly hunting down his quarry = Arnold.

Posted by: 18-1 at May 03, 2023 01:50 PM (lc5cP)
My NF review:
M3ager. I can't understand all these positive reviews other than they must have been involved in making the movie. M3gan is a meager effort at best. It's a rip-off of every "bad robot" movie ever made, with no new ideas or anything interesting to add -- other than the dopey spelling of Megan with a "3." None of the characters are likeable, none of the kills are inventive or interesting (even in the unrated version), and the plot is absurd even for a bad robot movie. Why is this even called a "horror comedy"? There's no horror and no comedy. Actually, I take that back: you might laugh at how stupid the characters are, especially the ones that just stand there trembling as M3gan slowly approaches them with obviously violent intent. The credits are full of admissions that the movie was financed in part by subsidies from Georgia and New Zealand (!). Then it dawned on me: this wasn't really a movie. It was a vehicle to soak up taxpayers' money and employ New Zealanders. Pass.

While it may seem productive to get rid of so many woke writers, something like this isn't really going to make it better.
With companies being lead by people accepting leftist shit, and producers fully supporting it, they'll just have the AI produce the same leftist crap. And since AI is basically programmed by these same woke assholes (where they still put limits on what it can say and remove any "learned" values that don't abide by their same ideology)
You'll also lose stuff like Silicon Valley, where they were able to slip libertarian and even slightly conservative ideas, past the idiots running HBO.
It may actually make things worse, because cutting the cost of a writing staff could make a show more viable. Where that savings changes a show from not being greenlit or renewed, to being worth the money spent on it, since it's now several hundred thousand cheaper.

It will take time to remove all jobs, you might have a janitor or someone still lingering until the janitor coding is complete, but all jobs will be removed until the last line of jobs available for people in every single industry will be coding AI for that industry. Only with AI, you have the potential to do something better:
The AI scans the top 10 or 20 or 100 Best Sci-fi movies of all time and have it come up with a script involving say Cupcakes that turn people into ravenous dinosaurs using the common elements and plot points in those 100 greatest SF movies.
The only difficulty is that you're using a limited source, so eventually that's maybe where people come back into it. It would take a long time though.
Script polisher for AI is probably the writing job in Hollywood for the foreseeable future.

I'm just not seeing this in my own personal life. If I hit a call tree or chat bot about 95% of the time I'm quickly going to "agent" or "human" or "representative" and I assume, honestly, that most of the investment in IVR/chat bots tech is really just to reduce the number of people that will contact you.

I'm in the business of "let me Google that for you" for a lot of questions that come my way. The local Help Desk *might* be able to answer some of those questions, but some of our customers are so used to contacting us directly they just prefer to do that because we either know the answer, can find them an answer quickly, or direct them where they need to go. Some of them will probably never be too keen on learning to query AI for their answer if they aren't able to Google for it now.

Mine isn't. SAP can only generate a certain piece of information and label it one way. Our customers want it labeled a certain way according to how they will use it. That's where I come in. I receive the raw data, relabel it to each customer's specific request, and the email it to them.

Just popping in for a quick quote from someone else:
the machine plays no favorites between manual labor and white-collar labor. Thus the possible fields into which the new industrial revolution is likely to penetrate are very extensive, and include all labor performing judgments of a low level, in much the same way as the displaced labor of the earlier industrial revolution included every aspect of human power.Norbert Wiener, The Human Use of Human Beings

292 But, yes, plumberbots are coming. I expect that we'll start to see radical redesign of housing in order to take advantage of automation and AI for designing and building. Combined that with new designs for connectors to make it easier for a robot to assemble everything, plus a lot of plug-and-play stuff.
Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at May 03, 2023 01:48 PM (wmDcS)
THIS. Sooner or later I expect the big plumbing fixture companies will be selling installation of streamlined restrooms with the sinks, urinals, and toilets contained in armored housings with the plumbing contained in the housing. Bots will be made tailored to cleaning and maintaining the restrooms and their fixtures. They will open a locked door in the fixture housings to access and repair the pipes and connectors. All housings will be smoothed into the floor and walls with a generous radius, making the restroom easier to clean by robots. I am surprised this is not happening now in new construction office buildings.
The bottom line is that supply and service robot capabilities will eventually drive the designs of restrooms, kitchens, office spaces, big box stores, and a lot more.

My guess is that most of them do.
I noted this at the end of another thread but the fact is, every time a new medium comes out (Videotape, CD, streaming, etc), Hollywood tries to rip off the creators, especially writers. They figure "new format, contract doesn't apply."
So they either pay pathetic shreds of what they pay for the original work, or just don't pay. So writers have to fight to get the same percentage of royalties for the new format that they got for the other ones.
That's my guess what is going on right now: writers want their fair share from streaming royalties, which the studios don't want to pay.

It was leaked a few years ago from the Soviet archives that they had an someone working for them code named "Doctor Robot". He was a professor and lived in the northeastern part of the US.
We never formally found out who this person was but there is a one person who fit everything in the information we do have - Dr Asimov...
On a tangential note the left made some motions to cancel Asimov recently since we was apparently rather handsy with his female fans but since he's dead they let it drop.

377AI will kill social media too,a s it's increasingly just a platform for advertising. Already, places like Instagram are overrun with bots. Now thousands of accounts posting AI generated posts with AI generated pictures pushing products, for example, will overwhelm real humans attempting to post.

This is why after the Restrict Act passes, I'm ending my internet usage.
If you can not talk with humans, seek alternate sources of info, and the government will use online digital ID to seize your assets and imprison you with the assistance of voice simulators and deep fake technology, the internet is of no practical use, and is in fact a liability.
Time to return to a house phone and snail mail. Perhaps not even those.

AI is always going to be an adjunct. It's a program created by a human, having no sentience. Because it's a creation--a machine-- there is no initiative present.
People seem to forget that a computer is designed to perform a designated, repetitive function faster than a human, without fatigue. Outside that function they're as stupid as any machine.

So, that AI-generated Seinfeld episode (the first third) was terrible.
I wasn't a fan of the show (precisely because it was so predictable and formulaic) but if I sat down and watched an episode, I would get some laugh-out-loud moments.
Oh, the AI generated the framework in no time and all the writer would have to do is punch it up? How much time do you think the writers spend on the frameworks?
The only reason I don't dismiss it out-of-hand is because people's standards are very low (and sinking fast).

My take on writers for TV, having relatives in the industry, is that there's a bunch of LA hipster types sitting around a table; one of them tosses a yok out, and somebody else says, "That's funny; keep it in" without even cracking a smile. Nobody actually LAUGHS at this stuff, even when they hear it for the first time.
And all these people come from the same background; same suburbs, same schools, same economic strata, same in-crowd connections that got them the job in the first place. Nobody thinks differently from the herd of independent minds, if they know what's good for them. That's why it's all so trite these days.

Woke modern entertainment is already doing this. The person that created Muslim/Persian Ms. Marvel basically made the main character a Mary Sue of herself. Because she needed "to be seen." Nevermind the show tanked.
If AI allows the people who "need to be seen!" in their entertainment to create a Mary Sue avatar of themselves, or insert themselves into LOTR or Marvel or whatever, maybe there will be less of a crave for that in mass entertainment.

I think they profoundly misunderstood what "diversity" means. It isn't about physical characteristics, it's about ideas. There are guardrails on that that every culture erects. The Constitution is one example of that - it acts as a limiter on how wild your ideas can be. The Church is another example in another context. But within those limits - limits that can, with effort, be tested and moved - you can play with whatever ideas you want.
Our rulers went the opposite direction. What you look like or where you stick your dick is of paramount importance and diversity must be *restricted* to those areas. Everyone, regardless of how you look or who you want to bang, must agree and operate in a homogenized ideological framework.

Yeah its kind of shocking how out of touch these guys seem to be with their desired audience. Really? This is supposed to upset us?

Be on the lookout for a suspect.
Nowhere in the article is anything at all about him mentioned. Just a photo (I guess "draw your own conclusions, because saying it would get our building burned down")

Adam Corolla made a very salient point on his podcast last month. White supremacy is the fact that every other group has to agree with any stupid idea generated by their group. Whites are the only ones who can say another white is an idiot.

This is a true story. In the mid aughts, I thought Ace funny and made a brief study of his methods.
For about a month I kept a little notebook of things he’d written that delighted or surprised but in any case made me laugh, and made notes about the structure of the joke or this and steps taken to set them up or subvert expectation etc.
Then for about a week I tried using those steps and it WORKED EVERY TIME. For a week or so I was in awe and then I got scared and stopped doing it.

I'd rather be left behind. I don't want computers creating my entertainment. The only thing that makes art worthwhile, interesting, is the human experience.
Churlishly declaring that you don't care or that they deserve it because too many of them have acted as propagandists is throwing out the baby with the bath water.
I'll carry on not watching the output of party-political stooges and I'll do the same for AI content.
Both are robbing us of better content but if multi-billion dollar corporations are able to create movies by stealing the work of previous generations and running it through a computer then we'll never get another David Lean or Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock.

"I noted this at the end of another thread but the fact is, every time a new medium comes out (Videotape, CD, streaming, etc), Hollywood tries to rip off the creators, especially writers. They figure "new format, contract doesn't apply."

C'mon, @Ace: you can come up with better excuses than that for not playing Portal. Portal 1 and 2 are both dirt-cheap on Steam and you can play them over the internet on Nvidia GeForce NOW for no additional cost. You could even skip a couple of months of the dental plan for the COBs in order to pay for it. Do it (for Science!).

Here's an experiment you can do at home - ask Chat GPT to prepare a plan for a one-day tourist visit to your city.
Mine hit most of the high points - I might change a thing or two, but it was pretty good. And it wasn't any better/worse written than most tourist brochures.

I suspect we'll find that ChatGPT is pretty good at writing average scripts.
And that we have vastly overestimated the ability of Hollywood screenwriters.
So, there will be work for a smaller number of truly talented writer and directors.

"When asked for his prediction, Russo speculated that AI will be creating movies in two years, adding that moviegoers will eventually be able to create different movies on the spot"
Proving definitively that Hollywood's product has become a mere drug designed to relieve viewers of any need to think.

"and then I never really had any system the old discs would play on."
You are so cute. Disc's. That's adorable. I payed a hundred bucks, stupidly, for Cyberpunk 2077, and it was literally a gamedisk case, with a fucking liscensing code.
I believed, again stupidly, that a brand as strong with people who REALLY gamed back in the 80's and early mid nineties featuring Keanu Reaves might know that it's suicide to con the fan. Well, stupid me, I haven't played it since the day it took me 2 and a half hours to download the fucking thing, and refuse to play it until they stop charging for the DLC that should have been a part of the initial release.
The only Classic game that was incapable of delivering a total product is Donkey Kong. Not because the game wasn't finished, it was, it was the EQUIPMENT that couldn't. That could be forgiven, but if I'm correct, even in emulator play only like 9 people have made it to the cut screen, so not a big deal, in fact, it can almost be considered an easter egg.

Yet at no time has a modern game that I was interested in been delivered in a finished form at the time of release. I'm not saying all modern games, I'm saying all modern games that I have been interested in. Even DiabloIII, with all of it's lead time shat the bed. I'm done with AAA games, they treat their CUSTOMERS! as Pre-Beta testers, after the CUSTOMERS have payed out the Buttegieg to purchase an early release, and those CUSTOMERS who used to be FANS now hate a thing that they loved, because they were lied to.
George R.R. Martin syndrome. Fuck Him, and fuck AAA Games.
