First-World Problems...

packedbasement.jpg

No, that's not my basement. Mine is neater. But it sure does have a lot of crap in it, and very little of it is ours. The brats and the relatives seem to think that it is a free storage facility! Admittedly some of the stuff is books...about 1,000 volumes of mostly history from my parent's house, but that is stacked neatly and doesn't offend my obsessive-compulsive sensibilities.

But I am going to have the last laugh. I am going to set a target date for everything to be dealt with. That date will be two days before my town's regular bulk pick-up service. If the stuff isn't gone by then, it's going onto the curb. No arguments. No whining. No second chances.

And then I am going to open a good bottle of bourbon and toast my neat and clean and mostly empty basement.

6 It is really difficult to deal with clutter. I try to use the rule that any time something new is brought into the house, something of equal size needs to go. Even though I try to live up to doing this, I look around and see failure.

9 That pic resembles our storage shed. A little less stuff in the shed and the floor is dirty. Actually the storage room in the basement used to look close to that and I did toss or give away a lot of the clutter. Unfortunately I NOT naturally tidy so the remaining stuff looks more like an episode of hoarders than it would need to. Oh well, I have made progress and I didn't put the rest of my life on the shelf to do it so I guess I can count that as a win.

11 The house I lived in. It had stuff from his wife, both her parents and stuff that hadn't been looked at since the fire. I couldn't get the kids to look at any of it, until after I moved out. I had to pack my stuff out of the mess. So glad to be done with it. At some point, I may get rid of some of the stuff I moved.

13 "Brats and relatives", speaking of legacy and beloved blood brothers and sisters in these terms reveal that one may consider them "clutter" too. May be on the road to Hermitville in the near future. And, a 1,000 history books would make an awesome bonfire in the backyard.

15 I saved a bunch of "historical relics" (aka junk) from my grandparents and some local single uncles, as well as my Mom's relics from my childhood. My big old farm house has lots of space, so I kept a lot, which just sits there for a decade or more. Much needs to be delivered to some big hole in the ground ...

16 I just came from a few days on the Oregon Coast. (Wonderful time to celebrate one of the bigger birthdays.). The hotel had a storage space under the exterior walkway. The work crew had left the door open and I got a look inside. It looked a lot like this picture.
A bit alarming too as the first thing I noticed was several cylinders of propane with plastic gas cans stacked on top.
Yikes!

20 That would be incredibly hard Notsothoreau. Having stuff that you don't want to just send to the dump cuz the kids might have had sentimental attachment. Congrats on extricating yourself. I actually sent to the strict store some fancy tea sets that were in our basement. I suppose mom had them because they had been gifted to her or were from the aunt's estate but I didn't even know that the history was and I did know I was never going to use them so I figured they should have a chance to wind up somewhere where they would just be sitting in a box that was getting mildewy.

22 First World Dum-Dum Problems:

Whenever I talk to my CO peeps, I talk up my new spot, because theirs is a dump. Most people say "shit, man, that sounds great! Maybe I should visit soon."

But one person (my sister) rejected the notion of visiting outright, and as of this morning, it's been two (my wife's friend). And they had the same reason: weed isn't legal here.

I used to smoke a little in CO. If you're in France, you drink the wine, right? But if you're so dumb that you say "well, every single thing is better there, except I can't buy top-shelf marijuana," then I guess you should stay where you're at and not bring your dumbness here.

23 I've had to help move hoarders. One old lady had a house and basement stuffed to the ceilings with dolls. Her daughter's home was clogged with all the toys and plasticrap she bought for the grandkids at garage sales. I have a relative who collects anything that's made of metal and weighs more than three tons.

I got rid of 95% of my books (they're all on PDF, or at places like archive.org, or at the library.) I got rid of all my art and wall decorations. A bare wall looks beautiful! Got rid of needless furniture; far easier to clean house.

Our kids where perpetually messy. Clothes and toys left all over the place. So we made a "clutter box." The day before trash was picked up everything went into the box that wasn't put away. That night it went to the curb. The wailing the following the next day was instructive.

Then, the kids started to fish through the box at the curb the night before, but only taking what they *really* wanted back out. Pretty soon they'd self de-cluttered out of necessity.

They are doing large volumes of shredding directly in front of customer would be impossible to scan stuff first. It’s bagged up and hauled to a recycle facility. I don’t think I would use a shredding service that has you simply drop off your documents.

Considering the age of the gasoline, fuel stabilizer or not, I'm still surprised the generator started and ran. However, I told my wife the generator is going on a "regularly start and run monthly" schedule after what I went through yesterday.

131 Howdy, CBD! I had a pretty solid FWP this week...

A couple weekends ago, my wife goes to visit our college daughter for a "Mom's Weekend" event. I booked her a room with points at a Holiday Inn Express. She advised me there was no hot water the entire time, and nobody working there who seemed to care. I eventually spoke to the manager, who apologized and offered to refund my points. Great. Two weeks later, points were still not refunded, so I decide to call the customer service line for frequent guests.

That debacle took over 45 minutes to unfold. The main highlight is the third representative - of the five with whom I eventually spoke (each one speaking poorer English than the last) - actually had a f*cking rooster crowing in the background. It crowed three times before she handed me off to the next person. I thought Judas was gonna hand my ass over to the Romans....

160 And Doof - hows it going?

Pretty good, all things considered. Life keeps changing and I keep doing my best to adapt. Appreciate you asking. Hope all is good with you.

161 It's now 2 pours shy of full. Tried it again a few moments ago. Definitely not my thing. Good burn up front since it's a high proof. But it smells like straight ethanol and has the most empty finish imaginable. If nobody drinks it over the next 5.5 months, it's yours, brother.

Posted by: Doof at April 30, 2023 03:50 PM (yUjc0)

Deal..and I'll bring you some Knob Creek 12 (a couple pours short).

I like Knob Creek btw. Just since I moved out of CA, I can't get it cheap any more (I miss the 1.75 Knob Creek BiB for ~$37 @ costco).

175 Yeah, an electric start generator is on my list to purchase. However, I prefer inverter generators as they tend to be quieter and, as such, tend to cost a bit more.

178 Colkegan mesquite smoked single malt whisky out of Santa Fe is one I enjoy. The distiller learned his craft in Scotland which gives you an idea of the flavor profile. Since New Mexico has, checks map, exactly zero peat bogs mesquite is used because there is lots of it around and it works great.

190 We've had this fun little chat enough times to establish a totally non-math algorithm: with proper management, you can run one post a day about the need for a high speed low drag Kondolife, and at least one more about how important it is to buy all your books in hard copy to avoid canceling, with a matched set bewailing the loss of our family culture and heritage. Like perpetual motion.

It's new, it's improved, it's old-fashioned. We're not really hypocrites, really. It's just that we have kind of short attention spans and don't get that excited about the notion of consistency. It's all very spiritual.

191 How apropos!

This afternoon, a contractor for the township arrived to mow the backyard of the neighbor's house. Unfortunately for him, he discovered that first he'd have to pick up garbage. He brought his son to help.

Fortunately for ME, they arrived just before I was going to put on my "junk" shoes and gloves to continue the process. I pointed out two garbage cans they could use. They've been at it for over two hours, and no mowing yet.

The former owner (it's been foreclosed) filled his house with garbage. Then he'd toss things off the back deck.

192 On the budget level, I like Buffalo Trace, Old Forester 100 and Wild Turkey 101, all reasonably priced (although Buffalo Trace is hard to find in my area). Moving up a bit in price, Four Roses Single Barrel is good as is Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Russell’s Reserve 10. Hard for me to go much beyond those, as I’m too cheap to spend much over $50 on a bottle. If you like an Old Fashioned, Old Forester Rye is an incredible bargain..

The problem with the higher priced stuff is that price can be more of a marker for scarcity than quality. There’s lots of very expensive Bourbons that aren’t as tasty, or available, as some of the lower priced offerings.
