They all lie. They all cheat. They all act in their own best interests without regard for any other thing. Only when their interests conform with the wishes of their constituents does it seem as though they are behaving honorably and doing the job to which they were elected. But that is coincidence.
Joe Manchin Gave Away All His Power In One Fell SwoopThe truth about Sen. Manchin is that few political figures in American history have surrendered so much leverage and political power for so little in return than he did when he caved into the demands of Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and cast his vote for the IRA [Inflation Reduction Act]. Before that vote, he was without any question the single most powerful member of not just the Senate, but the entire congress. But after the vote, his leverage surrendered without anything concrete in return, his power was gone.
This is just adorably naive. Of course Manchin got something. What? We probably will never know. The feigned anger is nothing more than posturing and obfuscation for the people of West Virginia, on the off chance that he decides to run again and needs their support. For all we know Manchin has been playing a long game at the behest of the Democrat junta, and all of his supposed movement toward the center is a part of that game. Does the writer truly believe that Manchin trusted Schumer to do what he promised? Come on...that's ridiculous! But one thing we can all count on is that he is a politician who acts in his own best interests, and that the interests of the people of West Virginia and the people of the United States of America have no influence over his actions. The only way to get what we want is to make our interests more rewarding to the political class than the competing interests across the aisle. A good example is the recent Speaker of The House election, in which Kevin McCarthy was strong-armed into doing some genuinely good things for the people of the United States in exchange for his election as speaker. Does anyone believe that he would have accepted those concessions freely? No, of course not!

Inflation's a funny thing. It's not really something that can be reduced by an act of government, unless one considers the government NOT acting to be an act.
There's only one way to stop inflation, and that's to dry up the supply of money. Does anyone in Washington look like they're interested in doing that? Check your local skid row. Do any of THOSE people look like they're interested in stopping their addictions?

He did it because the grassroots right had enough Congresscritters on their side to steer the ship.

The consumer price index isn't really inflation. It's the result of inflation.
And the index was gamed to remove things from it, so it looks lower than it actually is. If it were still measuring what it did in the 70s, it would be well into double digits.

I used to look at the graph of Labor Participation at the BLS quite frequently. It *used* to run back to somewhere around the end of WW2. In the age of Biden it only shows 20 years now, so you can't see just how far it has fallen over time.

But let's just assume that you're right for the moment. We've had roughly 2 years of 9-10% inflation. We'll have 5% this year. That means that we'll experience AT LEAST roughly 30% inflation during Biden's reign of terror. Roughly 30% of the value of everyone's assets was stolen from them, never to return: 30% of their salaries, 30% of their life savings, 30% of the value of all their goods.

Since I've started to use "evil" a lot more frequently, it gratifying to see it employed by writers you respect since any other descriptor falls far short. This is an age of evil, which is a feature and not a bug of this increasingly repulsive empire and a significant chunk of its populace. But in such an environment, is profitability sufficient any longer? The other side routinely uses fear and violence and those are anathema to us and, more to the point, realistically limited to the foot soldiers of the state. Other than despair, it is hard to know what the appropriate reaction is.

In purely fiscal terms, look at how Trump handled Covid and all the stupid bailouts and stimulus he threw at it. Yet the Tea Party wing that got so angry at TARP and the auto bailouts will give him a complete pass, yet's its 100x worse.
The inflation we are experiencing now is absolutely a direct result of what was done. To say nothing of what that did to our culture when you just mail people checks for doing nothing.
But if the person with an (R) after their name does it, we don't care. Had Hillary done it, we would have said it was pure socialism and the end of the Republic.

Which would be fine except that some of those flaws contributed to real damage to real people and it's absolutely going to be an issue in the 2024 election. Ignoring them now, and the damage done, has become a liability.

Inflation is caused when the government spends money it does not have.
So, to stop the current hyperinflation you have to cut spending, and not be some trivial amount, or raise taxes by a significant amount.
Those are the only two answers. No one in government wants to cut spending...but at least for now they are afraid to implement a massive tax increase. So...hyperinflation for the foreseeable future.

There is no way that there will ever be another single constitution. There may be 3 - 5, depending on how many successor states eventually coalesce out of the wreckage. Yours is a good idea for the best of them.

We're in a trap - because so many people are dependent on government payouts, and because just the interest payments on existing debt are so high, we cannot seriously cut spending without triggering a massive depression - and that depression will just make the fiscal situation even worse. On the other hand if we keep creating money to pay existing bills, that will trigger hyperinflation, which will trigger a massive depression, which will make everything even worse.
All paths now lead to the same end. It really doesn't matter what choices we make now as a country or what bills we pass - they will only slightly change the timing, nothing more. We waited too long to start taking the situation seriously.

I think Biden is an extension of the same problem, but had Trump won reelection, I think we'd be having almost identical inflation problems.
I believe MOST of it is on Trump.

I enjoyed the Book Thread. When Trump got elected my artsy writer friends of decades went seemingly insane overnight. Just... crazy and it has not subsided.
I was told explicitly by long time friends if I didn't dedicate my entire creative output to destroying Trump I wasn't an Artist or a Writer.
Unlike many Creative Types I have real world kill experience and I explained my objections. I no longer have Liberal or Progressive friends and can't even imagine how any thinking person can.

One thing I've noticed most LIVs don't get...inflation is functionally permanent.
So if Biden raises the cost of beef from say $15 to $20 it is not going down. They seem to think if "inflation is solved" it will go back to $15 - as opposed to just not move on to $25.

"Inflation" used to (commonly) be Money Supply, even if it did not show up in prices. iirc it was a decade or more ago when "price inflation" started to be used as just "inflation".
It makes a difference, because we had a lot of monetary inflation with not a lot of price inflation (depending on how it was counted) ... due to efficiency gains and tech. Those gains were basically stolen and BigGov used the opportunity to make the rich richer and grow BigGov into Monster Gov. (always taking care of the oligarchs first)

I tried reading one of those insider books, about the Reagan administration. I had to stop, because in the end I saw the same Deep State b.s. was going on then as now, and Reagan was only one man. There is no way for a President to control the philosophy of his administration. It can't be done.
So I don't really have any strong negative opinions of Reagan... or Trump. I think both men wanted to do the right thing. They were just up against a structure that wouldn't allow them to.
Now, the Bushies on the other hand.....

There were a couple guys interviewed who were instrumental in deciding to fly that day, and BOTH men admitted to their responsibility for the failure. It was refreshing.

I'm afraid Friedman's take on achieving results was made for a different time. The political class and the electorate have too many True Believers, and as such will not recognize rational choices. What we do know about them is they are a fearful lot. They honestly feel that a guy dressed like Fred Flinstone on the way to a lodge meeting was leading a pack that was intent on hanging them on the National Mall after reenacting the Rape of the Sabine Women. Or at least Cory Booker did. We should then brainstorm actions that are within the law that would ply on that fear. The idea being that we'd enervate them into paralysis or goad them into overreactions that would wake up the LIV's of the world

If Conservatives concentrated their efforts on building grassroots alternatives, breaking the two-party system, that would be a start.
That, followed by helping Conservatives move from blue-states to winnable purple and red states and campaigning to break-up Red parts of California and Oregon from their blue stranglehold cities, would make a massive difference.

The spending in the Reagan era went to rebuild the armed forces, especially the Navy, which had been hollowed out and were in desolate shape after the Carter years. I lived through it; Reagan was one of the 5 greatest Presidents the US has ever had, by far the best President I have ever seen in my lifetime. Imagine a Donald Trump who always spoke with great wisdom and who hired great people. The left hated him, of course, especially because he crushed them. There's a continent of terrain (and I think a Wally World) between Loyalty and Worship. Ya know, Ace is the one who opened my eyes to Failure Theater and the Surrender Gracefully Tour. That we were being betrayed by leaders who wouldn't remain loyal to us after they were elected.
Are we going to throw all that out the window? Like Jamie Lannister, we were only loyal when Loyalty was easy. Being associated with someone who behaves like New Money is a bridge too far?

If you buy into that, it also comes with "the people are unfit to rules themselves", with the bill spread out over 10 generations.
