Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hold Their Feet To The Fire...it's The Only Way To Get What We Want From Our PoliticiansThey all lie. They all cheat. They all act in their own best interests without regard for any other thing. Only when their interests conform with the wishes of their constituents does it seem as though they are behaving honorably and doing the job to which they were elected. But that is coincidence. Joe Manchin Gave Away All His Power In One Fell SwoopThe truth about Sen. Manchin is that few political figures in American history have surrendered so much leverage and political power for so little in return than he did when he caved into the demands of Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and cast his vote for the IRA [Inflation Reduction Act]. Before that vote, he was without any question the single most powerful member of not just the Senate, but the entire congress. But after the vote, his leverage surrendered without anything concrete in return, his power was gone. This is just adorably naive. Of course Manchin got something. What? We probably will never know. The feigned anger is nothing more than posturing and obfuscation for the people of West Virginia, on the off chance that he decides to run again and needs their support. For all we know Manchin has been playing a long game at the behest of the Democrat junta, and all of his supposed movement toward the center is a part of that game. Does the writer truly believe that Manchin trusted Schumer to do what he promised? Come on...that's ridiculous! But one thing we can all count on is that he is a politician who acts in his own best interests, and that the interests of the people of West Virginia and the people of the United States of America have no influence over his actions. The only way to get what we want is to make our interests more rewarding to the political class than the competing interests across the aisle. A good example is the recent Speaker of The House election, in which Kevin McCarthy was strong-armed into doing some genuinely good things for the people of the United States in exchange for his election as speaker. Does anyone believe that he would have accepted those concessions freely? No, of course not! I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or it they try, they will shortly be out of office.-- Milton Friedman All of this is obvious, and has become increasingly clear as the political boundaries between the two parties become blurred. But the road to success must start with one simple axiom. No matter who it is...Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, Josh Hawley, Marjorie Taylor Greene, your local dog catcher...they are lying to us. All agents of government, and all those who seek to be one of those agents are inherently untruthful with regard to their motivations. Our founders understood this, and constructed a government that was limited, because the assumption was that all government is inherently controlling and evil (and by extension the people within it), so the smaller the better. That their construct was imperfect and did not counter the machinations of men intent upon acquiring power over us is simply proof that evil exists and is tenacious, powerful, and very, very patient. You credit the quote to Allan Greenspan, but he was in turn quoting the great Milton Friedman. A system which depends on good people doing good things will always fail in the long run. A system which induces bad people to do beneficial things for their own self interest, is the only type of system that can survive.
Because bad people will always rise to the top, no matter what your system is. That's one of the hard laws of human nature, and human society. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 30, 2023 12:07 PM (q3gwH) 7

The withholding for “income” taxes, social security nonsense, overseas wars with no formal DOW, 2nd amendment violations, rape and molestation all come to mind. Well, you're not wrong. And McCarthy is definitely a great example of a stereotypical politician being made to do useful things because it's beneficial.
They say that all politics is local, and that plays into this too. It's easier to get your dog catcher aligned with you than the president, and if enough dog catchers are on board then the local representative will be, and so on up to the said president. Again using the McCarthy example, he didn't do what he did because the grassroots right wrote him a bunch of letters. He did it because the grassroots right had enough Congresscritters on their side to steer the ship. But let's just assume that you're right for the moment. We've had roughly 2 years of 9-10% inflation. We'll have 5% this year. That means that we'll experience AT LEAST roughly 30% inflation during Biden's reign of terror. Roughly 30% of the value of everyone's assets was stolen from them, never to return: 30% of their salaries, 30% of their life savings, 30% of the value of all their goods.

Since I've started to use "evil" a lot more frequently, it gratifying to see it employed by writers you respect since any other descriptor falls far short. This is an age of evil, which is a feature and not a bug of this increasingly repulsive empire and a significant chunk of its populace. But in such an environment, is profitability sufficient any longer? The other side routinely uses fear and violence and those are anathema to us and, more to the point, realistically limited to the foot soldiers of the state. Other than despair, it is hard to know what the appropriate reaction is.

More and more, I think most of politics now is just psychological and not much different than why we like a certain NFL team and hate another.
In purely fiscal terms, look at how Trump handled Covid and all the stupid bailouts and stimulus he threw at it. Yet the Tea Party wing that got so angry at TARP and the auto bailouts will give him a complete pass, yet's its 100x worse. The inflation we are experiencing now is absolutely a direct result of what was done. To say nothing of what that did to our culture when you just mail people checks for doing nothing. Which would be fine except that some of those flaws contributed to real damage to real people and it's absolutely going to be an issue in the 2024 election. Ignoring them now, and the damage done, has become a liability. Likewise, not sure what he could have done though keeping Fauci/Birx on a tighter leash would have gone a long way to containing the damage. Politicians have an infinite number of potential clients. They all want your money or freedoms.
In the old days the amount they could indulge their clients was limited - they'd get voted out or potentially...dealt with...by their constituents. In Soviet America though the politicians control what ballots are cast and well, if you even think of some sort of effective dissidence its off to a J6 black site for you. So, since they have nothing to stop them from acting in all these clients' interests...why wouldn't they? Posted by: 18-1 at April 30, 2023 12:41 PM (lc5cP) 97

Inflation is caused when the government spends money it does not have.
So, to stop the current hyperinflation you have to cut spending, and not be some trivial amount, or raise taxes by a significant amount. Those are the only two answers. Posted by: 18-1 at April 30, 2023 12:43 PM (lc5cP) We're in a trap - because so many people are dependent on government payouts, and because just the interest payments on existing debt are so high, we cannot seriously cut spending without triggering a massive depression - and that depression will just make the fiscal situation even worse. On the other hand if we keep creating money to pay existing bills, that will trigger hyperinflation, which will trigger a massive depression, which will make everything even worse. All paths now lead to the same end. It really doesn't matter what choices we make now as a country or what bills we pass - they will only slightly change the timing, nothing more. "Inflation" used to (commonly) be Money Supply, even if it did not show up in prices. iirc it was a decade or more ago when "price inflation" started to be used as just "inflation".
It makes a difference, because we had a lot of monetary inflation with not a lot of price inflation (depending on how it was counted) ... due to efficiency gains and tech. Those gains were basically stolen and BigGov used the opportunity to make the rich richer and grow BigGov into Monster Gov. I honestly can't say that. In pure dollar terms, Trump was WAY worse than Obama ever was on spending.
I think Biden is an extension of the same problem, but had Trump won reelection, I think we'd be having almost identical inflation problems. I believe MOST of it is on Trump. Here's an interesting site about presidents and the debts they incurred. It's trickier than you might think. https://tinyurl.com/2p842twr In terms of debt increase in terms of percentage, it's FDR (for obvious reasons) > Wilson > Reagan > Bush > Obama. In absolute terms, "President Joe Biden is on track to add the most to the budget deficit, largely due to the costs associated with battling the coronavirus pandemic.". He ate enormously, aided and abetted by his wife Johanna, and was monstrously overweight. He hired and fired a number of doctors, whom he browbeat so badly they would not tell him what he needed. The last one, Schweninger, visited Bismarck, who, as usual, was in bed sick. Bismarck growled at him, "I don't like questions." Schweninger replied, "Then get a vet. They don't ask questions of their patients." Schweninger stayed, put Bismarck on a strict diet and he regained his health. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 30, 2023 01:27 PM (MoZTd) 211

I'm afraid Friedman's take on achieving results was made for a different time. The political class and the electorate have too many True Believers, and as such will not recognize rational choices. What we do know about them is they are a fearful lot. They honestly feel that a guy dressed like Fred Flinstone on the way to a lodge meeting was leading a pack that was intent on hanging them on the National Mall after reenacting the Rape of the Sabine Women. Or at least Cory Booker did. We should then brainstorm actions that are within the law that would ply on that fear. The best way would be to have another right-wing party to vote for.
If Conservatives concentrated their efforts on building grassroots alternatives, breaking the two-party system, that would be a start. That, followed by helping Conservatives move from blue-states to winnable purple and red states and campaigning to break-up Red parts of California and Oregon from their blue stranglehold cities, would make a massive difference. It cannot be that what was possible for abolitionists to do in West-Virginia and Kansas are impossible for modern Conservatives. The spending in the Reagan era went to rebuild the armed forces, especially the Navy, which had been hollowed out and were in desolate shape after the Carter years. I lived through it; Reagan was one of the 5 greatest Presidents the US has ever had, by far the best President I have ever seen in my lifetime. Imagine a Donald Trump who always spoke with great wisdom and who hired great people. The left hated him, of course, especially because he crushed them. Grant was a butcher.
Posted by: Puddinhead at April 30, 2023 01:47 PM (/UtnQ) == Grant was relentless and would refuse to give up an advantageous position until he had exhausted its potential. Out west, where natural defensive positions were less favorable than in Virginia, that worked to his advantage. In Virginia, had Lincoln maintained his micro management of the Virginia theater, because of its proximity to DC, Grant would have failed as well. But in keeping the pressure on Lee, it allowed Sherman to rout the south - and in SC they were over the top in the extreme, as Sherman blamed that state for the war. He made some mistakes, and had poorer field generals to pick from than Lee did. But southern generals had much higher casualty rates than the northern ones (being close to the action being why they were probably better in the first place), and eventually Lee didn't even have that advantage. The real butcher was J. Davis. He kept the fight going to save slavery, throwing a hail mary that Lincoln would lose the 64 election. Posted by: Black JEM at April 30, 2023 06:39 PM (UVyKP) 296

" the road to success must start with one simple axiom. No matter who it is...Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis...they are lying to us."
That's a very convenient argument. I warn that good leaders will not make sacrifices and stand up for us if they see us abandoned Trump You claim there's no such thing as a good leader. No need to worry that a future Ronald Reagan won't step up because Ronald Reagan doesn't exist. Ya know, when I was trying to report a pedophile in the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) to the Regional Officers, one of them literally tried to run away from me to keep his "plausible; deniability" intact for the courtroom. All of them had very reasonable excuses for why nothing could be done, ranging from a lack of standing (from a DC Public Defender who must have fcked her way through Law School) to rumors that the perp was hospitalized and only had 6 months to live. One special creature suggested mercy because pain from Diabetes drive him to it (we're talking about the molestation of six 12 year old girls over the course of 20 years) Posted by: Fenrisulven at May 01, 2023 01:05 PM (+LcMo) 300
I countered their arguments, assuming they were made in good faith, that they could be reasoned with. But no, they simply dropped they're old excuses and found new ones. They tried them on like winter coats until they found one they were comfortable in. "Can I face myself in the mirror, wearing this?"
If DeSantis lied to you I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean Ronald Reagan is a liar. Posted by: Fenrisulven at May 01, 2023 01:08 PM (+LcMo) 301
"That their construct was imperfect and did not counter the machinations of men intent upon acquiring power over us is simply proof that evil exists and is tenacious, powerful, and very, very patient."
No. The founders knew they couldn't make it foolproof. A few even wrote something close to "we're not going to wipe your asss for you". And Yeats pointed to this when he wrote "the best like all conviction, while the wicked are full of passionate intensity". The corruption hasn't just eaten away at the bad people, it's affected our will to act. More and more it's looking like Kristol and French are not outliers, they're leading indicators "proof that evil exists and is tenacious, powerful, and very, very patient." Evil is nothing more than a perversion of what is good. It only flourishes because good men do nothing. It's not a monster, ut hasn't grown in power, we're just weaker and smaller than we used to be Posted by: Fenrisulven at May 01, 2023 01:29 PM (+LcMo) 302
"Do not idolize them. Do not deify them. Do not crawl over broken glass for them. Do not be loyal to them."
There's a continent of terrain (and I think a Wally World) between Loyalty and Worship. Ya know, Ace is the one who opened my eyes to Failure Theater and the Surrender Gracefully Tour. That we were being betrayed by leaders who wouldn't remain loyal to us after they were elected. Are we going to throw all that out the window? Like Jamie Lannister, we were only loyal when Loyalty was easy. Being associated with someone who behaves like New Money is a bridge too far? "They are only tools for us, just as we are only tools for them." If you buy into that, it also comes with "the people are unfit to rules themselves", with the bill spread out over 10 generations.
