Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Periodic Update on the Electric Vehicle Follies; plus “The Trans-Texas IH-10 EV Challenge”It’s been a little while since we last checked in on the “electric vehicle transition,” so let’s see what’s going on. Let’s start off With Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s great taxpayer-subsidized boondoggle - Rivian! It is more likely that Ace will someday become a writer at The Bulwark than it is that a Rivian EV will ever roll off the assembly line in Georgia. Companies anticipating tremendous growth in industries that are expected to grow rapidly are usually hiring people, not laying them off, right? EV-Maker Rivian Lays Off 239 Orange County Workers: Additional layoffs at the EV automaker's Palo Alto facilities have boosted the California total to 479 [OC Register – 4/24/2023] The staffing reductions will impact a variety of positions, including “trail” engineers, geometric design engineers and mechanical engineers, as well as others involved in support services, digital surfacing, security, purchasing, program management, customer service, supply chain service and software engineering. How’s Rivian’s stock doing? Very poorly. It’s down over 70% (as I write this) from its 52-week high, and down more than 20% in just the last month. So, is it a good time to go bottom fishing for Rivian stock? Not if the ultimate price is going to be zero. With Rivian on track to spend about $6 billion in 2023—roughly half of the $12 billion in cash on hand it had in 2022—the picture doesn’t look good. It’s already cut its workforce by around 6%. Normally that would be good news, but Rivian already missed its production goals for 2022, and the job doesn’t get done without a workforce.General Motors is also struggling to gain traction in the EV market. Just this week it announced that it will be suspending production of its slow-selling Bolt EV. Despite being a slow-seller, the Bolt was still GM’s best selling EV. General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra cleverly worded the decision to stop selling its unpopular mass-market EV. "We have progressed so far that it's now time to plan to end the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EU production, which will happen at the very end of the year." GM to End Production of Electric Chevy Bolt, Its First Mass-Market EV, Later This Year [CNBC – 4/25/2023] But Bolt sales never caught on as well as many executives hoped, as EV sales overall remained minuscule outside of Tesla. The Bolt also suffered a major setback more recently, as GM recalled all of the Bolts ever produced due to a supplier-related battery issue that caused several fires. The photo below is of Vermont State Representative Tim Briglin’s Chevrolet Bolt. To be fair, it looked a lot better before it spontaneously combusted while parked in Rep. Briglin’s driveway. Well how about Ford and its electric E-dsel vehicles? It’s not good. Sales of its flagship Ford F150 Lightning electric pickup truck are plummeting. Ford ‘s well publicized goal is to sell 150,000 F150 Lightnings per year. That production is a dream that is slipping away. Ford's Poor F-150 Lightning Sales [24/7 Wall Street – 3/5/2023]The Ford F-150 Lightning is supposed to be its EV flagship. It is the electric version of its F-150 pickup, the best-selling vehicle in America for over four decades. That should give the Lightning a built-in advantage. However, Ford has only sold 3,600 in the first two months of 2023. It is a sign of how far Ford has to go as it tries to get Lightning sales into the tens of thousands per month.Yikes, that’s only 1,800 Lightnings per month in January and February. How about in March? Well, it got even worse. Ford sold only 691 F150 Lightnings in March 2023 [Ford Authority] I’ll do the math for you. Total F150 Lightning sales in Q1 2023 were only 4,291 which annualizes to just 17,164 sales. That is just 11% of the 150,000 that Ford intends to sell. Even worse, sales are trending downward as Ford is running out of What about Ford’s Mach-E Mustang? Its sales are in freefall too. From that same Ford Authority link, Ford sold only 998 Mach-E Mustangs in March 2023, compared to 2,363 electric Mustangs one year earlier in March 2022., a 58% decline. For full year 2022, Ford sold over 39,000 electric Mustangs, but it is currently on track to sell less than 22,000 in 2023…if sales don’t collapse further. I drove the new Toyota bZ4X electric SUV from New York to Washington DC, and back. The nine-hour drive involved three hours of charging. I learned the hard way that sometimes you need to choose between staying warm and maximizing range. This poor guy learned that there really is no such thing as fast charging, nor obtaining a 100% charge at a charging station. The Toyota refused to pull more than 35 kW, so just getting to 74% took a full 45 minutes of waiting around — not exactly something you want to do at night when you still have hours of driving ahead of you.So after waiting 45 minutes to get from 37% charged to 74% charged, how much more range did he get? About 75 miles. That stint added 95 miles of range, according to the SUV's estimates. But highway speeds sap energy quickly, so in real-world terms, it was probably more like 75. On the return trip, I stopped at an EVgo station with 6% remaining. This time, the Toyota wouldn't budge past 50 kW, so charging to 80% took an agonizing hour and 15 minutes. Independent testing of more than 70 electric vehicles shows that their range is nearly 20 percent less on average than the figures put in manufacturers websites. That means an electric car claiming that it can go 240 miles is likely to achieve less than 200 miles before running out of power. If you are foolish enough to drive an EV for much more than a daily commute, your “range anxiety” might as well start the moment you pull away from home. EVs shouldn't be forced on the public and lithium batteries should be avoided at all costs.
If someone wants an EV for their urban driving, driving that doesn't involve too many miles per recharge trip, then fine. Buy it and enjoy it. Just don't subsidize it and don't force these on everyone. And upgrade the grid - more nuclear power plants, more transmission lines, and the necessary end-user distribution, first. But what we're looking at today isn't going to work. And let the ICE people (like myself) keep our ICE vehicles. Posted by: Sasquatch, the Original Trans-Wookie at April 28, 2023 11:09 AM (xxG/v) 49
Trying to make electric vehicles replace ICE vehicles makes as much sense as banning meat because veggieburgers exist. I got nothing against veggieburgers. Some suck, some are delicious. I eat them when i want them. But it isn't meat, and the best ones are the ones that don't try to mimic meat.
EVs are a product. They do some things. They don't do other things. The jacked up assclowns calling the shots are fucking imbeciles if they think they can just snap their fingers and outlaw the internal combustion engine, and say it's fine because i can buy a completely different product for twice the price as the thing i already worked hard to pay off, and doesn't do what i need it to do. ++++ Ah, but that is not a sensible way to think about it. The F-150 is a good truck. One can argue as about "best" or "best for X," but the F-150 is a good truck. People like it. The F-150 EV is not a good truck. It cannot do good truck things - like tow or drive under load for any meaningful distance. It can do some good non-truck things - like be a backup power source for your house or look cool on the supermarket run - but that doesn't matter for a truck. Anyone looking for a truck probably isn't interested in the F-150 EV. Anyone looking for a family car that happens to be a truck might be interested, but the premium required for the EV is a brutally hard sell. What about Ford’s Mach-E Mustang? Its sales are in freefall too. From that same Ford Authority link, Ford sold only 998 Mach-E Mustangs in March 2023, compared to 2,363 electric Mustangs one year earlier in March 2022., a 58% decline.
++++ Sports cars are a great fit for EV. I strongly suspect that the reason for the Mach-E's poor sales are more to do with it being too expensive and too ugly - and the declining economic conditions of Mustang's traditional middle-class/upper-middle-class buyer than with it being an EV as such. Between Ford firing a bunch of folks to "rightsize" itself to produce EV's and my unpleasant experience with a rental ICE Explorer, I don't see Ford surviving as a viable entity much longer.
The Explorer proudly displayed what I would call design features that looked smart to designers but don't play well out in the real world. Automatic hi-beams that surprise and blind you when they unexpectedly pop on and you get blinded by signs that suddenly illuminate too much, auto-hold brakes that affix the vehicle to one spot anytime you stop, a dial gear shift that makes it stupidly easy to put the vehicle in park while you're still moving, etc. Flaming hot garbage. I've often driven 800+ miles in a day. Once was from El Paso to Little Rock. West Texas, or most anywhere between the Sierras and the Great Plains, is where EVs would go to die. Too much distance between charging stations, and not cost effective to put in isolated areas between towns. Also many steep grades that put the lie to "expected range".

Our local electric CO-OP had an article in their monthly rag about EV's. Basically it laid out the gear that would be required, depending on your type of EV, how much juice it would need, and how fast you want to charge it. They went on to warn customers that not everyone could; 1 afford the charging gear and costs, 2 not every location was suitable for a charging station and, 3 insurance on the home would likely increase.
Seriously... call your homeowner's insurance and tell your agent you want to put an EV charger inside your garage for your spiffy new EV's. Ask what sort of change to your premium that's gonna' run. We drove past their house and through the little town and its outskirts. As we made our way around a curve, a vast hillside in what was dense, mountainous forest had been totally covered with solar panels - at least several acres of them. The house at the top of the hill was still there, and it was probably their solar installation. But Buck, who drives 800 miles in one day?
Yup. I come pretty close every time I drive to San Diego. From my house in Texas to the hotel in Deming is 700 miles. Because of the time change its a relatively easy drive. Stop off in Mason for breakfast, Fort Stockton for lunch, and Las Cruces for books. When I drive to Michigan, the first day is to a relatives in St. Louis. Thats almost exactly 800 miles. Because I enjoy stopping at little towns in Oklahoma and Missouri, I often break that drive up but even then its a 700-mile drive to St. Robert. These are not rushed drives. They include stopping along the way to enjoy small-town diners (that dont have EV charging stations ), bookstores, and antique shops. Ive seen the video logs of a few EV early adopters in the 8-bit community, and I cant imagine stopping only for food when theres an EV station nearby. They seem to focus on fast food and national chains. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at April 28, 2023 11:45 AM (EXyHK) 311

My last trip across I10 was from El Paso to central Texas during the big storm in Feb 2021. There was a Tesla charger at the hotel in Ozona. But your EV would've ran out long before you got there. Average speed on I10 was 2~3mph from Fort Stockton to Ozona. There's another Tesla charger in Junction. Luckily there's a BBQ joint so you can get something to eat while you charge. I'm thinking between San Antonio and El Paso, there's no a lot of charging options other than the ones I mentioned. Fort Stockton, maybe. Same with Van Horn. After that? Good luck

I used to semi-routinely do Denver, CO to Memphis, TN in a single day. It's a *very* long day, but I would do it regularly. I just checked and that's 1,100 miles. Easy to do alone, much harder with a family.
But even with a family, hitting 600+ miles is easy. In a moving van as a part of two-vehicle convoy, we broke the driving days into 550-mile chunks because it was an easy and low-stress pace. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 28, 2023 11:48 AM (t0OGg) 330
Per Tesla's online trip planner (tesla.com/trips), an Orange-to-El Paso trip in a Model Y Long-Range will take 16 hours, 3 minutes. There will be six stops at superchargers totaling just over 3 hours.
Totally agree, EVs should not be forced on the public, and for all I've seen, they're just as bad or worse on the environment once you factor in manufacturing and power generation. I was forced to fly out to Commiefornia ...worse... Groomerland ... for my wife's award ceremony. I got picked up in a tesla Uber.
It's been a while since I was in a tesla but this brand new model 3 left much to be desired. The tech, while cool was very gimmicky. I noticed the system didn't pickup the lane divider flexible posts. The materials were cheap feeling. Door cards were flexing when I pulled the door closed. The seats felt like cheap fabric. Worst thing though... for a car that has no engine... it's awfully loud inside. Didn't remember that from the model S I rode in a while back. To carry on a conversation with the driver I had to raise my voice. My wife's 2005 Honda accord interior felt much more luxurious and better assembled. Doubt this is part of a grand plan to keep us from moving around. It seems to me like a climate change circle jerk where our betters are dreaming and scheming and decide that we can't simple let EVs find their place in the market as decided by the market.
No, we can mandate the people to buy them by subsidizing the whole schmear. We spend money and grease the palms of huge companies and they grease our palms back. And we get reelected because we tell the LIVs and our Democrat useful idiots that vote for us that what we're doing is good for the climate AND the economy. And, damn, while we're doing this , we reduce the distance that the rubes in flyover country can travel, Hell, the distance anyone can travel. Keeping people stuck in place is a great added benefit. > And there is likely a Buc-ees or two on the way to El Paso
I've driven this route (the other way, part of a trip from Las Vegas to Fort Walton Beach), and I recall seeing two of 'em along the way: one in Katy (west of Houston) and one somewhere in Alabama (Google tells me it was along I-10 in Robertsdale, east of Mobile). I didn't know they were a thing outside Texas. Google also says there's another along I-10 on the east side of Houston, but nothing west of San Antonio (and the one nearest there is a long way from I-10). All true, except for Tesla. GM chose poorly with batteries. Ford chose poorly with batteries and built a truck with terrible range and looses $20k per vehicle on an already overpriced truck. Range and charging times suck on all these EV's except for Tesla. Notice how no one runs these range and charging tests with Tesla's...

Driven from Tulsa to Phoenix in one 15 hour day, also Phoenix to Greenville, SC in 36 hours (8 hr stop in Abilene). Get 360 mile range in 10 minutes of "recharging" (filling gas tank for F250 Transit). Electric folks have no intention of matching that capability, especially if you have any sort of cargo. People who like electric never travel 100 miles from home. Tech is nowhere near ready.

I think there's some irony in that the video of tbe parking garage collapse in NYC was captured by a Tesla.

A reboot of "Cannonball Run", but with EVs, would need to be expanded into a miniseries.

Several real world trials of EV pickup trailering capacity show them to be abysmal. As bad as 1kWh per mile.

But there is no EV that can be most things to most men. There are plenty of ICE vehicles that can be most things to most men.

Just got back from a Los Angeles to Tucson, and back, in our 2017 Ford F-150. Filled up in LA, miles to empty 700. Drove into Quartzite, AZ having only gone through a quarter tank. Filled up again, because it's what I do on trips to Tucson (that a Dairy Queen stop), miles to empty; 731. Rolled into Tucson, used up only a quarter tank. Next four days I drove out to Tombstone and all around Tucson. Still had over a quarter tank left. Filled up again for return trip, miles to empty: 721.... well you get it. I'm still working on the full tank from Monday of this week... screw EV's.

...ALSO... went to visit my daughter in Boise, ID. 13 hours, 832 miles. Filled up in LA (694 miles to empty), then in Bishop, CA (279 miles from LA) and made into Idaho with over a quarter tank available, (made it in 12 hours, both ways). So yeah, screw EV's.

These EV debates always seem to devolve into people telling you what you REALLY NEED, as in "do you REALLY NEED to drive 800 miles in one day?"
"who REALLY NEEDS that?" It's just a point furthering my constant refrain that these "elite" big city folk who think that they are the most worldly and most intelligent people on the planet are so goddamn provincial. THEY don't need to drive 800 miles a day, so therefore, by that logic, NOBODY needs to. Furthermore, you aren't the one who gets to say what I NEED and what I don't. Get bent. And lastly, it isn't even a case of NEED. I have this ability now. If you want to sell me on a new technology that's so much better, I really don't feel like I'm asking too much to expect it to be, you know, ACTUALLY BETTER. In short, a person that has lived their entire life on a 13 by 2 mile concrete island probably doesn't have the best feel for what people "really need" outside of that tiny, insulated existence that they feel has made them so worldly.

I live in a rural town of about 7000. Plenty of pickups, plenty of F-150s, all shapes sizes and years. There's 1 Ford dealership and one F150 Lightning. It's driven by the son of the man that owns the dealership. Note i said driven not owned.

Rivian, GM and Ford, yet nothing about Stellantis (Fiat, Chrysler, Ram, Jeep), Buck?
You must have written this up before the announcement this week from Stellantis that the company will be offering "voluntary separation packages" to 33,000+ employees (of its 55,000 American employees + thousands more in Canada). The claim is the packages will be offered to employees with 15+ years experience with the company. It used to be in the work force that it was "last in, first out" come layoff time. With the logic being that you want to keep your most experienced and capable people around to do the work to keep the company afloat. Makes very reasonable sense. Especially when these experienced employees will need to take on more work to account for the work previously handled by the laid off employees. Now though, Ford, GM and Stellantis are getting rid of the most experienced people, presumably because they have the highest salaries. But this also means leaving the company in the hands of the least experienced, least knowledgeable and least invested employees. Ridiculously stupid plan. OK, enough about the EV sales debacle.
Is there a way to confirm the breakdown of public sales of vehicles versus fleet sales? i.e. sales of vehicles to the average customer vs sales of vehicles to say the police force (Dodge Challenger) or the government (EVs) or the post office (EVs), etc? Or when you state sales, are all these numbers to be assumed to all be public sales to the average customer? I assume that the vast majority of EV sales are fleet sales, rich people and average customers taking advantage of government taxpayer-funded incentives. Take away taxpayer-funded incentives and that leaves EV sales to fleet and rich people and that's it. Which means there is zero market. Which means the auto industry, with its WEF-driven "electrification" agenda is committing suicide. Which is likely the WEF/Deep State Marxist Left plan. how long would it take to drive an electric vehicle from Orange to El Paso?
Which month? Any time from June through September, I hope you and the car can tolerate 100F weather. Actually, more like 110F or more in the car, since you probably can't run the a/c on super-cold-super-high and drive for very long.... Posted by: GWB at April 28, 2023 04:31 PM (jjYpq) 445

I've said before I don't understand why the push was for EVs instead of the next logical step of Hybrids. They went all in on a pair of deuces.
Posted by: polynikes at April 28, 2023 11:08 AM Because of the EPA and CAFE standards and regulations. They are ridiculously stringent and the only thing that has a slight chance of meeting them is a product line of only EVs. This is all because of the Marxist Left "climate change" policies and regulations. Has nothing to do with what customers want or what will make the automakers money. It has everything to do with the fact that if the mpg and emissions standards are not met, then the automakers either are banned from selling vehicles or pay fines that will bankrupt the company. These regulations go into effect in 2025. And vehicle programs are 3-5 years for development. The product lines to meet the 2025 regulations had to start development in 2020-2021. As soon as the Deep State rigged and stole the election, the die was cast. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 28, 2023 05:20 PM (Do5/p) Posted by: DavidD at April 28, 2023 08:21 PM (nNVOy) 448
I have driven the 600 miles from Kansas City to Denver (& back) several times. Just one stop for gas is all it takes, and under 9 hours. (Additional stops for bathroom breaks and coffee/food, but that's to fuel me - not the ICE car).
EVs are NOT useful outside of commutes & short trips. I'll keep my Chrysler, thanks. Posted by: Rick Yarnell at April 28, 2023 09:08 PM (WlkuX) 449
